Volume 33 • Edition 17 • 11 November 2016 From the Principal Term 4 Week 6 As Year 12 students complete their final assessment and exams, we wish them a positive and strong finish. After the assessment is behind them, there are a number of special events that are part of them finishing their time at Good Shepherd including their graduation, final Chapel and ‘Walk of Honour’. Students across our College are completing, or preparing to complete, final assessment tasks for the year. In these last few weeks, encourage your child to finish the year strongly, to remain organised and focussed. Their reward will be enjoying the holidays knowing that they have demonstrated their year’s learning fully. Good Shepherd is a founding member of SCISSA (Sunshine Coast Independent Schools Sporting Association). Prior to this year our Year 4-6 students participated in two seasons each year of inter-school competition on Thursday afternoons. This year saw the introduction of a new format for the Year 4-6 SCISSA competition consisting of weekly training sessions, scheduled inter-school trials or friendlies and a Gala or Carnival Day each term. This week was the final Gala Day for 2016. The expected benefits of this change have been realised, including a greater opportunity to train, less time out of class spent travelling on a weekly basis and the energy and excitement associated with the Gala Days. If you haven’t already please date claim our Year 6-12 Presentation Evening on Wednesday 16 November. A number of awards will be presented in the areas of academic achievement, academic endeavour, cultural, sport and service. Students receiving awards are asked to be seated by 6.00pm for 6.30pm commencement. The Maroon Awards Presentation is Thursday 17 November commencing at 8.45am in the HPE Centre. Whilst all students and families are encouraged to attend, families will be notified shortly if their child is receiving an award at these ceremonies. The last major event for the year is the P-5 Christmas Concert on Thursday 24 November in the HPE Centre. Our P&F will have food and drink available for purchase from 5.45pm until the concert starts at 6.30pm. All families and friends are invited to join us in celebrating the end of the year and in particular the great news of Christmas.I look forward to seeing you at these and other end of year events as we recognise and celebrate the many aspects of another year of ‘quality Christian education in a caring environment’. Samoa Surf Trip

September holidays 2016

During last holidays 10 of our surf program students embarked on an international surf trip to Salani, in Western Samoa. Accompanied by teachers Mr Hann, Mr Tomkins and Mr Hayes it was our first ever trip to compliment the surf program run here at Good Shepherd.

We were fortunate on arrival to be presented with the back end of a falling swell which gave the students ample opportunity to get comfortable with the reef bottom in friendly, smaller waves. Throughout the week the swell slowly increased along with everyone’s confidence resulting in many of us getting our “best ever” waves. The students also had great experiences interacting with all the local kids when we weren't surfing in addition to a cultural night where we ate local food, watched Samoan dance and fire twirling. We also spent time sightseeing local lava tubes and waterfalls. Everyone had a fantastic time (including the teachers) and we hope to run more trips like this in the future.

2016 Samsung Primary School

Cup - Netball

The 2016 Samsung Primary School Cup was held in Ipswich and consisted of 110 netball teams from Primary Schools around Queensland. The competition was fierce and with so many schools competing the atmosphere was electric. Good Shepherd put forward a strong team consisting of nine Year 6 girls (Sophie, Hayden, Juliette, Grace G, Billie, Zara, Amiel, Abigail and Casey) with one Year 5 girl (Grace E). To advance to the Championship Finals you needed to finish first in your pool. Our very first game of the tournament turned out to be our hardest opponent in our Pool (Samford State School) and we clawed our way to a very low scoring draw. As the day progressed we would have loved to have played this game again as we ended up equal first in our pool and technically undefeated, but ranked second on a countback using percentages. This then placed us into the 2nd Level Pool finals where we finished very strongly. After playing a total of 10 games for the tournament, we came away with only 2 very close losses!

All girls played extremely well and I was very pleased with their improvement as a team as the tournament progressed. I was extremely proud of the way the girls conducted themselves both on and off court and the most pleasing aspect was that I could see every player putting into place the instructions that were given to them for each game. We also had some great support on the sidelines with parents making the trip and my life was made so much easier with the support of Assistant Coach Donna as well as Jane organising the scoring and everything else. We were very well fed and I was lucky enough to sample some great home baking sent down with the parents. Overall it was a fantastic weekend and I look forward to all of these girls progressing through the netball ranks at GSLC. Our future is looking bright.

GSLC Shines Hope Once Again

Salvation Army Christmas Appeal

Once again I am blown away by the generosity of students and families at Good Shepherd. Students in Year 6-12 collected an incredible amount of presents to give to those in need this Christmas. Through the Salvation Army, they are going to be impacting over 30 people and bringing much joy and hope to families who need it most.

When I was talking to Lara Sutcliffe from the Salvation Army, she told me a story of a parent breaking down in tears of joy last year when her child received a bike. The impact of these gifts will far outlast one day of the year. Thank you to the Senior Leader Community Group for their organization of this incredible event. Wishing you a blessed and Merry Christmas!

From the Head of

Junior Years

I Didn’t Know

I didn't know that years of school and a college degree would be of little consolation when facing a room full of bright little eyes on the first day of school. I thought I was ready... I didn't know that five minutes can seem like five hours when there is idle time and an eight hour school day far too short for a well-planned day of teaching. I didn't know that teaching children was only a fraction of my job. No one tells you about the conferences and phone calls, faculty meetings, committees, paperwork and paperwork... I didn't know that it took so long to cut out letters, draw and colour pictures, laminate-all for those bulletin boards that were always "just there"... I didn't know that I would become such a scavenger, and that teaching materials would feel like pure gold in my hands... I didn't know that administration and co-workers that support and help you could make such a difference... I didn't know that there would be children that I loved and cared for and stayed up late worrying about, who, one day, would simply not show up. And that I would never see them again... I didn't know that I can't always dry little tears and mend broken hearts. I thought I could always make a difference... I didn't know that the sound of children's laughter could drown out the sound of all the world's sadness... I didn't know that children could feel so profoundly. A broken heart knows no age. I didn't know that a single "yes ma'am" from a disrespectful child or a note in my desk that says "You're the best!" could make me feel like I'm on top of a mountain and forget the valleys I forged to get there... I never knew that after one year of teaching I would feel so much wiser, more tired, sadder and happier, all at once. And that I would no longer call teaching my job, but my privilege.

Patricia Clafford

World Teachers’ Day

A couple of Fridays ago (28 October) we held a morning tea for World Teachers Day to celebrate what a fantastic staff we have here at GSLC. So what is World Teachers Day? A day when we recognise the contribution that teachers make to our society. Being a teacher is not as easy as is often perceived, but it is a wonderful profession and we know that it is good teachers who make good schools. UNESCO

inaugurated World Teachers’ Day in 1994 to focus attention on the contributions and achievements of teachers. At GSLC, we value quality learning outcomes along with a Christian values-based education, pastoral care and building community. How well we achieve this depends so much on those who work in our classrooms. Teachers are essential and indispensable for the effective working of our educational system. Teachers help in the development of a child not only academically, but also socially and emotionally. We are very fortunate to have an excellent group of teachers and support staff in our College who do a wonderful job each day.

2017 Prep Students’ Orientation Morning

The Prep rooms were well and truly busy last Wednesday, with many of our younger students who will attend GSLC next year, spending time in the Prep area. The Prep staff had done a wonderful job in preparing for the morning and the rooms were full of a large variety of activities for the children, as well as some basic introductions to a day in Prep. I thank the Prep teaching and support staff for their efforts.

Peter Kuruvita's Coastal Kitchen on SBS

As many of you are aware, we do have a celebrity chef as one of our parents. Taj Kuruvita and family will be featured on his Dad’s (Peter Kuruvita) new cooking series for SBS. The school was also involved in filming for Peter’s new series, so if you have a chance, watch out for the program on a Thursday night. It started yesterday, Thursday 10th November at 8.30pm and will run on every Thursday 8.30pm for 6 weeks and is based all around the Sunshine Coast.

Staffing and Class Groups 2017

One of the important tasks staff undertake in Term 4 is the formation of class groups for the following year. As part of our professional responsibilities, we spend considerable time formulating classes based on deep knowledge and context of how each child performs and interacts within the classroom – academically, socially, emotionally, etc.

As these class formations will be under consideration in the coming weeks, if you have any information you would like considered, please place any specific requests for consideration in writing, to myself or the class teacher, no later than Monday 14th November. Please understand that all considerations are taken seriously. This process is very complex and many things need to be considered when shaping a new class. That said, we do not and cannot guarantee that your request will be granted.

I appreciate that some parents are keen to know which teachers will be on particular year levels. At this stage we are very close to finalising this and I will let you know very soon. As some of you may be aware we have had a few unexpected announcements to work through.

Freedom is Not Free

November 11th, the day of remem-brance to those who battled for our freedom. Upon stepping off the bus, an overwhelming sense of pride came about the students representing Good Shepherd Lutheran College. The service was to honour not only those who have fought for us but their ancestors. The large number of people who were veterans, or at the service on behalf of their loved ones, was astounding, showing the great respect throughout our community we have for those who paid for our freedom. A touching speech that resonated with us was presented by a young pilot who has flown for 16 years. Although she had not experienced war on a personal level, she acknowledged how our lives have been impacted through the continuation of our freedom and the impact that her grandfather and family members had on her understanding of service.

This along with the last post and the laying of the wreaths instilled an overpowering sense of valour. Near the closing of the service, the Australian National Anthem was played in addition to the New Zealand National Anthem. This allowed the members of the community to join in to pay their respects and show their enthusiasm for our country’s culture. All in all, the community moulding together to commemorate our freedom and the way in which the country has achieved it was surreal and an incredible experience.

Special mention to Cameron Sanderson, 7D, pictured left, who represented the Navy Cadets as part of the service.
