The Rev. Dr. Donald Craig Kerrwas born in Pittsburgh, Penn-

sylvania. He was a graduate ofPrinceton University, PrincetonTheological Seminary and the Uni-versity of Toronto with a doctor’sdegree in Theology.

He served as Pastor of theRoland Park Presbyterian Churchin Baltimore, Maryland for over 30years. While in Baltimore, he wasChaplain and Trustee of theGreater Baltimore Medical Cen-ter, Chaplain at McDonogh School,Moderator of the Presbytery ofBaltimore and President of theTrustees of the Chesapeake Synod.

He was the author of “Designfor Christian Living”, “What theBible Means”, “How the ChurchBegan” and “The History of Reli-gion in America.”

Dr. Kerr came to Sarasota in1980 and served as the PastoralAssociate at First PresbyterianChurch for several years. He alsowas the Chaplain at PlymouthHarbor, Chaplain of the “St.Andrew’s Society and Chaplain at

Sahib temple. He was president ofthe Princeton Club of Sarasota andpresident of the Ivy League Club.

He leaves a legacy of great re-spect for literature, a relentlesscuriosity about the nature of hu-manity, a strong intellect alwayslooking for new ideas. He was con-stantly expanding his horizons. Hewas a thoughtful shepherd to fam-ily and friends. A man of substanceindeed.

You will see his articles appear-ing in the Reporter through theremainder of the year. He was al-ways a leader and enjoyed beingahead of the game.

He is the second chaplain Sahibhas lost this year. Noble DonaldCollins, who had moved back toOhio to be close to family, passedaway earlier this year. The pass-ing of both of these distinguishednobles leaves a position which can-not be filled, not only in the Shrine, but also in the fraternity. Fare-well, my dear and never to be for-gotten friends and colleagues.

Emeritus Recorder Bill Battenhas provided us an excellent

report on what happened at the2013 Imperial Session starting onpage 21, I hope you will read it. I feltcompelled to quote one section:

"The membership report pointedout that the Shrine membershipdropped below 300,000 for thefirst time. As of December 31, 2012,there were 296,876 members in theShrine. We had a net loss of 13,018for the year. There were only 7,637creations and 2,939 restorations.Deaths totaled 10,358, suspensions17,610 and expulsions or resigna-tions totaled 672. This points outvividly the need to expand our mem-bership, retain our current mem-bers, and recruit younger membersand encourage more active partici-pation in our temples."

The numbers that struck methe most, were the ones on mem-ber losses through the back door.

At least we know that 672 ex-pulsions or resignations were mostlikely for some just cause.

Here at Sahib, we have a com-mittee that spends most of the year, contacting and cajoling memberswho haven’t paid their dues, tocome back. The fact that our orga-nization has to spend all this timeon attempting to restore over18,000 suspended nobles who havelet their memberships lapse, should signal to us all, that wehave a lot of members who do notvalue their membership. We re-store only 3,000 of those suspended!Experience has taught us, if wecan get nobles involved, they donot join the ranks of suspensions.

Potentate’sNotes

Hello nobles,

A quick update on the health of your Potentate; Thursday, May 23, I had the lower, rightleg artery opened up and ended with a 100% blood flow to my foot, originally was only40%. This allowed my wound to heal within 13 days (was predicted to heal in 2 weeks bysurgeon.) I am now fully mobile, at last!

As I write this, we are preparing to travel to Imperial in Indianapolis leaving the templeon Thursday, June 27; then from Indianapolis to upper New York state, Pennsylvaniaand then home by auto train and arriving in Sarasota on Friday, July 26.

Our shut down party was Friday, June 28, at which time good food was served and colddrinks. Kim Jenkins played in the lounge, friends, neighbors, other nobles and theirfamilies had fun, danced and socialized. We had many projects planned for shut down,June 30 to July 12; replacement of main cooler doors in the kitchen, painting andrefurbishing of décor in lounge and Sahara dining area. All will come to be refinished ifwe can find some extra funds from clubs and units. Please dig a little deeper so we canmake our Shrine a spiffier home for nobles, family, friends and neighbors to meet andgreet. As an aside, the lounge refurbishing is First Lady Stacey Lee Zurlo’s project forthis year; she has received a first donation of $500 from LOS.

We have been working on the ritual room for a couple of months. First, the outside wallwas fixed along with gutters, then a leak was found in the roof and the roofer is workingon this. Once the wall dries out on inside, then it can be replaced. This project wasfunded by a $1,000 donation from Manatee Shrine Club.

Linda’s office has been completed with outer library cleaned up for use by units formeetings and Linda to talk with clients concerning rental of our facilities. Linda andGene Borkowski’s old office is being refurbished for the Divan usage and the hospitaloffice has been streamlined. Come see what this area looks like now. For the club/unitmeeting on Saturday, June 1, all units and clubs were asked to meet in the upstairs, third floor locker, which was cleaned out. We had the shredder company here onWednesday, June 5 to pick up 40 boxes.

Well I have written long enough. Have a safe summer and if traveling, be careful. See youin August.

God Bless All!

William “Bill” H. Zurlo, Potentate

Recorder’s notesby Don Vos, [email protected]

Assistant Rabban’s notesby Connie Jacobi, [email protected]

We are blessed with the type of nobles that wehave here at Sahib. As I’ve said before you

cannot go anywhere in life and find the caliber offriends that we have here. I would like to pause andremember two that just passed away and are in thePromised Land, this I know.

The first one was Noble Phil Staples who was amember of the Oriental Band, Legion of Honor andthe Pipes and Drums. He was a little gruff, but he wasalways there when you needed him. He was a greatPipe Major, with a sense of responsibility and knowl-edge of his profession. He was a great friend and agreat Sahib Shriner, even though he always woreshort pants. I guess we all have our downside.

The second was Rev. Noble Don Kerr, a member ofour Chaplains Unit; a great man of the cloth. Hisarticles in our Reporter were always with Great Spiritand meaning. When you met him, he always had a smileand was always glad to see you. He was a very humbleman and knew his Bible from front to back. If you havenever read his articles, please turn to it and reflect onwhat it says. You cannot go wrong with his knowledgeon things going on, and how he approaches the subject.

I attended both of the services; both had Pipersand had great services. If you have never been toMasonic Service or a great church service, please tryto attend and remember our great past nobles ofSahib Shriners. Their relatives will be pleased thatyou attended.

I want to start by saying hello to all of our friendsthat are still up north for the summer. We hope you

are enjoying the summer weather and spending timewith friends. We miss you all and hope you have a safetrip back home. Now what are you missing? Well wehad a party on Sunday June 23 to watch NikWallenda’s walk over the Grand Canyon. All enjoyedsalad bar, free beer and lasagna from our kitchen thatwas out of this world. We did Grand Canyon triviawhile the walk was delayed due to gusty winds. A veryspecial thanks to all of the helpers who came in earlyto set up, serve the food, pour beer, and clean up. Itshowed how well an event can come off with a little bitof help. This was truly a great event and is just thestart of good times to come!

I also had the privilege of presenting one of ournobles his Past Masters Apron. W:. P.W. Towsley wasmaster of his lodge in 1962. When he stepped down in1963 there was no apron presentation. On June 26 atthe North Port Lodge, 50 years after being master ofhis lodge, P.W. received his apron. There were many

of Sahib’s North Port Shrine Club present, with someof them chipping in for the purchase of his apron. N.P.Shrine Club has high regard for Noble Towsley andwere just as thrilled as P.W. over the presentation.See photos on page 34.

July is a very busy month for Wendy and me as wehave five different fireworks shows to perform. Assome may not know, Wendy and I are pyro-techni-cians and perform shows in different cities in Florida. The 4th of July we shoot the show in St. Cloud and thelast show we did there had over 30,000 people attend-ing. The cheers after the finale makes the two days ofsetting the show up, all worthwhile. Other shows areRed Neck Yacht Club, Charlotte Stone Crabs Base-ball, Boca Grande Club and some private parties.

The Motor Corps has given the Hillbilly’s a welldeserved July and August vacation from cooking.Come on down and enjoy they’re delicious hamburg-ers and famous onion rings. Don’t forget to visit yourBlue Lodge and let’s keep Shrinedom going!

Greeting nobles, this is probably one of the hottestsummers I have had since coming to Florida 12

years ago but it is still cooler than St. Louis. My St.Louis friends asked us how can you stand the hotweather in Florida? They don’t know that it is stillcooler than St. Louis.

As of the writing of this article, we just got backfrom Morocco Shrine Ball. What a great time we hadthere. Oriental Guide Bill Balkwill and High Priest &Prophet Carroll Scriber and our ladies really enjoyedthemselves.

Then Lady Deanie and I were off to Mahi ShrineBall and it was a good time! The Smurf Family came

to the ball and performed with the Ill. Sir StephenRosean; quite a treat.

Grand Lodge of Florida was in session May 26-29and your Divan was there in support of our Shrine.

June brought on another ball at Bahia Shrine andit was great to see some of our counterparts again. That should be the last ball until October and thenwe’re off to Amara and Araba Shrines in Novemberfor their Potentate’s Ball.

Imperial Session was in Indiana, many thingscame up and Recorder Emeritus Bill Batten will havethat information for you elsewhere in this Reporter.

Stay healthy and remember those who are not!Proud to serve the nobility of Sahib Shriners!

SHRINE CLUB NEWS

Seems like it’s been a while since there was newsfrom the Motor Corps; with no July Reporter, we

should have a lot to write about. On the other hand,it is summer and several of our members are upnorth. However, I digress.

Our Bikerbilly dinners began on Thursday, July 19through August 30, Motor Corps members and theirladies give the Hillbilly Shrine Club a summer break. If you haven’t tried our Bikerbilly dinners, you haveseveral more weeks to come out on a Thursday night. We’re sure you’ll enjoy our famous burgers, onionrings, and maybe even some battered mushrooms, plus a number of other items on our menu.

Several of our members will be attending the FloridaAssociation of Shrine Motor Corps the second week inAugust. The event runs from Thursday, August 8 throughSaturday, August 10 in Cocoa Beach.

The Motor Corps is the host for the August 13Birthday-Anniversary Dinner Dance. Music is beingprovided by Taylor & Taylor. Menu choices will beeither Pork Chop Creole or Buttercrumb HaddockFillet. Preferred attire is dressy biker -vests (leatheror cloth) with slacks. Alternative attire is dressysummer casual. Though this is the “dog days of Au-gust,” we hope you’ll join us for an enjoyable evening.See Marylou for reservations and tickets.

. . .continued on page 10

Good grief! It seems as though an evacuation hasbeen ordered for North Port Shrine Club. Our

Tuesday breakfast numbers have dwindled consider-ably. The snow nobles have deserted our lovely hotand humid weather for cooler locales. Maybe theyshould be renamed snow chickens. You must remem-ber that hot and humid is an art form in Florida andis the primary reason air conditioning was invented.Of course, the fleeing nobles also will not have theopportunity to experience any of our most splendifer-ous extravaganzas: hurricanes! Now aren’t you sorryyou left?

Sign on the Tamiami Trail: “You don’t have toshovel sunshine.”

Our past Scribe Jock Robertson is back with usafter a major surgical procedure and looking muchobetter. I am particularly happy he is back since I amin need of his counsel now and then, mostly now.

Two new members welcomed to our ranks, NobleRobert R. Cameron Englewood Lodge No. 360, spon-sor Don White and Noble Philip Zych, P.M. &P.D.D.G.M. Mt. Moriah Lodge, Westfield. Massachu-setts & Melha Shriners, Springfield, Massachusetts, sponsor Clint Van Tassel. Noble Cameron was swornin to our club at the June 4 breakfast. Visiting NPSCat our May 28 meeting was Ill. Sir H. James Topping2010 Potentate Media Shrine Watertown, New York,a pleasure to have him with us. Our June 4 breakfast

saw Potentate Bill Zurlo and PP Tom Millaway join-ing us, always a pleasure to see them.

Past President Jack (buy a pin or else) Watsonreports all Circus pins purchased have been sold. Thevery last pin was bought by the club members contrib-uting a dollar each and the pin was presented toChristine Zagrobelny owner of The Olde World Res-taurant where we meet, greet and conduct club busi-ness; final tally $2265. Superb work Jack. Bravos tothe big spenders ($100) Sam Cohen, Art Ayotte,Rocky Kearney, Bob Somerville and Jack Watson. Allcontributors were listed in the June Reporter. The fall season is upon us. The year is going by sofast, we have Burnt Stores, fall picnic,

Commodore’s Ball, Venice Sun parade, Venice Holi-day Parade, Sarasota Holiday Parade and the Christ-

mas Party at Marina Jacks this will be a fun time, wewill give you the time and dates later

August 14 - Mariners meeting August 27 - Madison on 41 time 6:00 p.m.

Recently I was handed several Masonic Apronsthat were found upstairs in the Sahib Shrine

Lockers Room. Their owners were not known and Iwas asked to honorably retire them accordingly tomost states Masonic Protocol.

What is the proper protocol for your MasonicApron when you die? Have you told your family whatto do with your Masonic White Lambskin Apron?

Your Masonic White Lambskin Apron should beeither:A. Placed inside your coffin some place for in-ground

burial or may be properly displayed in its appro-priate place on your body for public viewing.

B. If your wishes are to be cremated then your WhiteLambskin Apron should be placed inside yourdisposable coffin to be cremated with your body. What about any other Aprons you have from

other Masonic Organizations? They should accom-

pany your body for either ground burial or crema-tion; but—not for public display. Only the WhiteLambskin Apron should be on public display.

While Secretary of Sarasota Lodge Number 147for many years, I was shocked to find out how verylittle family members knew about this or had beentold by their Masonic relative. It got to the point thatI would attempt to contact the family to pass on theLodge’s condolences and to brief them on this protocol.

Have you briefed your family on what to do withyour Masonic White Lambskin Apron?

BTW: I took the Masonic Aprons, along with someAmerican Flags to be retired, to our source to beproperly retired by draping over the disposable cof-fins of Masonic Veterans for cremation. I was toldthey cremate some Masonic Veterans and the Apronswould be held until needed.

Now you know!

High Priest & Prophet’s notesby Carroll Scribner, [email protected]

Greetings to all! It’s been a while since our lastwrite up and things have quieted down for the

time being.Still problems with the restaurant and bar situa-

tion; we need a full time, professional food serviceand banquet manager. We also need a full timecustodian to do normal building repairs and mainte-nance and to safeguard the temple when it is rented. These must be priorities if we are to maintain andgrow our facility. It’s easy to say, “We’ll fix it tomor-row.” But what if tomorrow we let it go again?

Your Divan has been filling in on weekends toprovide a representative in the building when it isrented and this cannot continue. We cannot be allthings to all people. We have friend and family obli-gations, too! We are working with the Potentate andRecorder to resolve this situation.

As I write this note, I am in the office at ourtemple. I am the designated Bird Show representa-tive today and other Divan members have taken theirturns at covering various rentals over the past fewweeks. Since we lost our events and restaurant man-ager, many details of operations have been over-looked and it seems we are adrift in those areas.

As I sat here, a gentleman stepped in and thankedthe Shrine for its help with his granddaughter whohad spina bifida. We had supported the family sincethe child’s birth to her passing at 21 years of age. That’s what we do!

When you read this, I will have been at the Impe-rial Session in Indianapolis. I’ll update you on myobservations and impressions next month.

Membership is still the main target of our efforts.Your committee is working but you are the singlelargest source of friends and neighbors to invite tojoin us. Each One Gets One! Replace Yourself!

We have a great membership rate of only $150 forthe balance of this year and dues for next year. Youwon’t find a better time to invite your friends - askthem!

I am currently working on the set up of the Birth-day Anniversary dances for next year. Several of thedates are already filled so if your unit or club wantsto be a sponsor, call me now!

We still have a need for volunteers at both thePancake Breakfast and Bingo. These activities pro-vide a large portion of our temple budget. Withoutthem, we will be in trouble! Come on in and give us ahand!

I am heading for a visit to Maine following Impe-rial. Sandy needs her grandchildren fix and I needto take care of other things while we are there. We areboth looking forward to home, but will be happy to gethome to Venice.

Oriental Guide’s notesby Bill Balkwill, [email protected]

I hope every father out there had a great Father’sDay! I know I did! Where has this year gone? It’s

flying by us! As I write this, we are getting ready to goto Imperial Session, June 28-July 4, in Indianapolis,Indiana; should be interesting this year.

We had a great Birthday/Anniversary Dance lastmonth. A lot of people turned out and we had a greattime. The food was delicious and the entertainmenthad people up and dancing. Get ready for the next oneon August 13. Hope to see you there!

Boy! What a great and suspenseful Sunday, June23 was! The Wallenda Party was a huge success! Many thanks go out to Chief Rabban Rocky and LadyWendy, along with the Divan and their ladies, forputting on this event. We had trivia questions, a 50/50 raffle (Lucky Juanita!) and free beer. The lasagnawas scrumptious! Hats off to the chefs! What aboutNik Wallenda’s walk across the Grand Canyon? Trulyamazing to have witnessed some history in the mak-ing. To watch him walking 1,500 feet above the river…“wow!” My wife was so nervous for him that shecouldn’t watch. You could hear a pin drop in that

room. Well, until Marylou got up and started walkingand someone yelled out, “Where you going Marylou?”That broke the ice. We had about 125 people at theevent until the winds delayed the walk and somewent home to watch… but we all still had a lot of fun!Look forward to the next upcoming event!

I hope everyone is remembering to thank ourchefs, bartenders, wait staff, and our secretary forthe great work they continue to do at the temple. Justa reminder that some kind words can go a long way.

I would also like to thank Ken Clark and DickSchmidt for doing a great job in the Transportationunit. They’ve made some significant changes.

Last but not least, we need to give a good pat onthe back to Gary Schweinshaupt, KCCH and editor ofThe Reporter for doing an exceptional job with ournewspaper. I disperse them when I’m at the hospitaland the other drivers can’t believe what a greatmagazine we have. I do agree, great job Brother Gary!

Remember: Support your Shrine, and keep a childin your heart!

August 2013 SAHIB REPORTER Page 21

Indianapolis welcomed the thousands of Shriners totheir city from June 30 to July 4, 2013, with cooler

than average temperatures and lots of rain. This didnot dampen the spirits of the attendees as they pro-ceeded into the sessions.

Sahib Shiners in attendance included your electedrepresentatives Potentate Bill Zurlo, Assistant Rab-ban Connie Jacobi, Recorder Don Vos and RecorderEmeritus Bill Batten along with RepresentativeEmeritus W. Bruce Steube, PP. Additional Divanmembers present were High Priest and Prophet Car-roll Scribner and Oriental Guide Bill Balkwill. Inaddition, there were other nobles present who cameto compete and to participate in the big annual pa-rade.

There is very little free time for the representa-tives as scheduled meetings for some started everymorning at 7:00 a.m., followed by the general ses-sions at 8:00 a.m. for all, Monday through Thursday. For those not scheduled for meetings early Sunday, the church service was called for 1:00 p.m. at a nearbyMethodist church. The public opening followed at3:00 p.m. in the very large Indianapolis conventioncenter. This was well attended by representativesand the public. The Market Place also opened to allSunday afternoon. There was just about anythingMasonic available to purchase from the many ven-dors who displayed their wares. In addition, therewere items of clothing, jewelry, snacks, fundraisingitems as well as several circus promoters present.

The first full day of the business session startedMonday morning. Reports were presented from thestanding committees, such as Membership,Fundraising, Donor Relations and the special stand-ing committee report on the various costs of some ofthe public relations events, such as East-West ShrineBowl, PGA Golf Tournament in Las Vegas, Rose BowlParade and others. Debate followed as to the benefitsreceived versus the costs for the promotion to ShrinersHospitals for Children. After this report was fullyexamined and discussed, it was approved by thedelegates, some were vocal in opposition, but themajority ruled to accept the report.

One of the most challenging items on the “call”was item number 12. This was a proposal to amendthe bylaws of the Iowa Corporation, section 323.8 ofarticle 23 regarding temple membership. This pro-posal, if adopted, would permit temples in Arkansasto create nobles, who were otherwise qualified, to beinitiated without the prerequisite of membership inthe Masonic lodge under the jurisdiction of the GrandLodge of Arkansas. The Grand Master in the state ofArkansas has ruled that any Mason, who is a memberof a Masonic lodge under the jurisdiction of the GrandLodge of Arkansas, will no longer be allowed to re-main an Arkansas Mason and a Shriner.

This edict has been in effect for almost two years, and as a result, Masons and Shriners have beenforced to choose to remain a member of the Shrine ora Mason in Arkansas. The two Shrine temples in

Arkansas have lost many, many members as a resultof this edict, and if not resolved, may be forced out ofexistence in the state. Our Imperial Potentate, alongwith other Grand Masters from other states, hastried to negotiate a settlement with the ArkansasGrand Master, but has been unable to do so.

Debate on the item, pro and con, was very exten-sive with mixed feelings among the representatives. When the vote was called for, and the ballots werecounted, the result was the item was passed by thetwo-thirds requirement for a bylaw amendment. TheShrine temples in Arkansas will now be able to ini-tiate individuals who are not Freemasons.

Needless to say, this legislation resulted in a verylong morning, and after a short break for lunch, thesession resumed.

Imperial Bylaws require that the election for Im-perial Potentate for the ensuing year must be done onthe first business day of the session. This being thecase, Imperial Sir John Cinotto was nominated andelected Imperial Potentate for the years 2013-2014.Next, the rest of the Imperial line was elected, withonly the office of Imperial Outer Guard having morethan one nominee. After hearing the qualifications,Masonic and civic accomplishments, as well as per-sonal background for each candidate for this office, the ballot was called for. The result of this ballot wasgiven, and Joseph C. Savaglio, of Kismet Shriners, was declared elected as the new Imperial Outer Guard.

Following the close of the session on Mondayafternoon, the annual Imperial Shrine Parade washeld in downtown Indianapolis, with step off at 7:30p.m. The city had been under intermittent rain show-ers most of the day, but just prior to the start of theparade, the rain stopped, and the participants pa-raded, headed by a huge number of clowns. I do nothave the final count at this time, but I know we wereclose to the world’s record for clowns in a parade. Ibelieve that had it not rained most of the day, theworld record just might have been exceeded by thisShrine parade.

The membership report pointed out that the Shrinemembership dropped below 300,000 for the first time.As of December 31, 2012, there were 296,876 mem-bers in the Shrine. We had a net loss of 13,018 for theyear. There were only 7,637 creations and 2,939restorations. Deaths totaled 10,358, suspensions17,610 and expulsions or resignations totaled 672.This points out vividly the need to expand our mem-bership, retain our current members, and recruityounger members and encourage more active partici-pation in our temples.

The hospital report, presented by chairman Imp.Sir Douglas Maxwell, was very good and informative.A video of his presentation is available and will beavailable to all temples. This report was also ap-proved by the representatives.

The Imperial financial report was presented, andafter discussion of some of its content, it was ap-proved by the representatives.

The items of legislation on the call were not broughtto the floor in any order, but as the Imperial Poten-tate decided when to call them. Some of the itemswere jurisdictional in nature, and of minor interest tomost in attendance. Items requesting to join differentShrine associations or to resign from different Shrineassociations had to be voted on. Items on the “call”that I feel might be of interest to our nobility are asfollows:

Item 1 on the call would permit amendments tothe Imperial bylaws in an emergency situation, if it isso determined by the Imperial Potentate and two-thirds of the board of directors without calling for aspecial session of Imperial Representatives pursuantto an outlined procedure set forth in the legislation. The outlined procedures dictate that all representa-tives receive in writing a copy of the proposal, acomplete explanation and the effect if adopted. Eachrepresentative would follow prescribed procedures incasting his vote, and the method of returning hisballot to the Imperial Recorder to be counted. If thisis adopted, it would permit changes without waitingfor the next scheduled Imperial Session. This legisla-tion passed.

Item 2 on the call would have required the Impe-rial Potentate to appoint a special Strategic PlanningCommittee to report on all aspects of a strategicnature relating to the fraternity and report the find-ings to the Imperial Potentate and the Board ofDirectors. After pro and con discussion, it was feltthat we had enough committees now who could un-dertake additional tasks such as this. It failed topass.

Item 4 on the call would permit the ImperialPotentate to authorize the formation of Shrine ClubAssociations in a state or combination of states where

no temple has been established. If passed, this wouldallow Shriners International to have clubs or associa-tions in areas where we are expanding internation-ally. This passed.

Item 5 on the call would have increased the PerCapita Tax one dollar, from $15.00 to $16.00 annu-ally. After discussion on the item, a vote was called, and the item failed to pass.

Item 6 on the call pertains to prerequisite formembership. Currently our Imperial bylaws, Section323.3, requires that a petition for membership musthave provisions that require he be a member in goodstanding as a Master Mason of a lodge recognized byor in amity with a conference of Grand Masters ofNorth America. By adding International Conferenceof Masons (CMI) or the World Conference of GrandLodges, it would assist Shriners International in itsability to develop membership internationally. Thisitem on the call also passed.

Item 15 on the call, if approved, would abolish alljurisdictional lines and permit a person to petitionany temple of his choice, and affiliate with any templeof his choice regardless of his residence. This wasdebated both pro and con for some time. When thevote was called for and the ballots counted, the itemfailed to pass.

Item 16 on the call clarified and added reportingrequirements regarding financial statements fromtemple clubs, units and for holding corporations. Thispassed.

Item 17, if passed, would have allowed ShrinersInternational to furnish a list of members to thirdparties for the purpose of approved fundraising ac-tivities for Shriners Hospitals for Children or forShriners International without consent of the indi-vidual Shrine temples. This failed to pass.

Shriners Hospitals for Children, The ColoradoCorporation, had items on the call that applied totheir corporation. There were three members of thecorporation running for election or re-election forterms on the Board of Trustees. After the qualifica-tions for each candidate were presented and theirnames were placed in nomination, a vote was called. After ballots were tallied, Imperial Sir Douglas Max-well was re-elected to serve on the board.

Item 28 on the call was similar to item #1 for theIowa Corporation, and provided a way to amend theby-laws without calling a special Imperial Session. This also passed.

Item 30 on the call if passed would allow nomina-tions from the floor to elect an individual to serve onthe board of trustees for a term of one year. Currentlythis position is reserved for the Junior Past Poten-tate. This item passed.

Item 31 on the call would have changed the quali-fications, elections and term for service on the Boardof Trustees. If passed, this would have prevented anyPast Imperial Potentate, except the Junior Past Im-perial Potentate, from serving on this Board. TheBoard members currently serving would be forced off,and new members, not Past Imperial Potentates, would replace them. After much debate, this itemfailed to pass.

Item 32 on the call if passed would allow a mem-ber of the Colorado Corporation to be able to run fortrustee even if he had passed his 72nd birthday. Thisalso failed to pass.

The Imperial Potentates evening this year was aperformance by New Odyssey, three guys, 30 instru-ments, a thoroughly entertaining evening that wasavailable to those in attendance.

Wednesday morning, the Pageant for ImperialPotentate-Elect was given. This is always a veryinteresting event, and it portrays the life achieve-ments of the new Potentate-Elect, his family, Ma-sonic background, achievements during his 10 yearson the Imperial Divan as well as his personal likes.Since Indianapolis is the home of the annual 500-mile race, it was only natural that this would be ofprime importance to a hometown person, such as thenew Potentate-Elect. There was a beautiful video ofhis home life, family and of course the 500-mile race. They included Imp. Sir John, actually in a racecartraveling around the track, receiving the checkeredflag and winning the race. He was dressed exactly asa driver should be dressed. After the video, Imp. SirJohn and his Lady Margaret arrived in the huge hall, and he was dressed in the driver’s uniform. At thispoint, he received many gifts from various templesand from his family.

In the afternoon, the Imperial Public RelationsReports were given. This was very well done. We thensaw the video of the two children, who were treated atShriners Hospitals for Children, saw the wonderfulresults of the treatments they had. We next met thechildren and their families who were called to thestage. The children will be the Shriners Hospitals

John A. Cinotto Elected Imperial PotentateDuring the 2013 Imperial Session, held in Indianapolis June 30 – July 4, John A. Cinotto of Westfield, Ind., was elected the Imperial Potentate of Shriners International, making him the highest-ranking Shriner in the world. In this role, he serves as President of the Board of Directors for Shriners International and Chairman of the Board of Directors for Shriners Hospitals for Children®.

Founded in 1872, Shriners International is a fraternity focused on fun, fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, charity and truth. Currently, there are nearly 200 chartered temples worldwide. The fraternity founded and continues to operate Shriners Hospitals for Children, a 22-facility health care system that offers care for orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate, regardless of the families’ ability to pay.

Cinotto was raised a Master Mason at Pentalpha Lodge #564. He is a member of the York Rite and, in 2000, was honored with the 33rd Degree of the Scottish Rite. Cinotto is a member of the Indianapolis Murat Shriners and served on the temple’s Divan for 10 years. He has held numerous offices at his temple, including president of the Reception Unit, chairman of House and Grounds, chairman of the Indy 500, and Circus Chairman. As an Imperial Officer, Cinotto has served as chairman of the Special Purpose and Fundraising, Donor Relations and Public Relations committees. Other committee service includes Salary, Personnel and Retirement, Special Task Force for Hospital Reorganization, and the Future Committee of Shriners International. Cinotto also served as a member of the Buildings and Equipment Committee for 10 years.

In the Shrine Circus and Fundraising Association (SCAFRA), Cinotto held offices of both president and secretary. Cinotto was founder of Teocalli #500 Indianapolis and served as its Camaxtli in both 1997 and 1998. He is also a Past Chief Supreme Tialoc in the Order of Quetzalcoatl and received the Order of Knights, Eagles and Tigers award in 1998. Cinotto has been awarded the DeMolay Legion of Honor and served on the DeMolay Foundation in Indiana. In 2013, Cinotto was honored by the International Legions of Honor with the Distinguished Service Award.

Memories of the past continued(Excerpts from “The Lodge Room over Simpkin’s Store,”by Lawrence N. Greenleaf, 33°, Grand Master of Ma-sons in Colorado, 1880.)

When the Lodge opened at gavel’s sound withofficers in place, we looked for strange, con-

glomerate work, but could no errors trace. The morewe saw, the more we heard, the greater our amaze, tofind these country brethern so skilled in Mason’sways; but greater marvels were to come before thenight was through, where unity was not mere name, but fell on earth like dew, where tenets had the mindimbued, and truths rich fruit age bore, in the plainestLodge room in the land, up over Simpkin’s store.

To hear the record of their acts was music to theear. We sing of deeds unwritten which angels scrollappear, A widow’s case—Four helpless ones—Lodgefunds were running low—a dozen brothern sprang tofeet and offers were not slow. Food, raiment, things ofneedful sort; while one gave a load of wood, another

shoes for the little ones, for each gave what he could. Then spoke the last, “I haven’t things like those togive, but then some ready money may help out” andhe laid down a ten. Where brother cast on darkestsquare upon life’s checked floor, a beacon light toreach the white—was over Simpkins’ store.

Like scoffer who remained to pray, impressed bysight and sound. The faded carpet ‘neath our feet wasnow like holy ground. The walls that had such dingylook were turned celestial blue. The ceiling changedto canopy where stars were shining through. Brighttongues of flame from altar leaped, The “G” was vividblaze. All common things seemed glorified by heaven’sreflected rays.

Oh! Wondrous transformation wrought throughministry of love—Behold the lodge room beauti-ful!—fair type of that above. The vision fades—thelesson lives!—and taught as never before. The plain-est Lodge room in the land up over Simpkins’ store.

The mission of Masonry is to unite all men undervirtue and the truths it teaches demand that each

man be accepted for himself and not because he wasborn as a Moslem, Christian or Jew. The truths ofMasonry are contained within many of the religionsof this world. Whatever faith a man has, these idealscan be embraced by him while he practices his ownreligion. You will note that while you go through thedegrees you will come across many symbols, each ofwhich furthers a better understanding of virtue andtruth.

One of these symbols is the fish. A fish, or tesserae, was presented to you after the 26th degree. TheGreek word for fish is IXOYE, pronounced “ick-tuss.”The letters are also the initials of five words which wetranslate to read “Jesus Christ, Son of God, theSavior.” Hence, the early Christians adopted the fishas a Christian symbol. This was not a surprisingmove since we know that at least seven of the apostles

and two of the disciples were fishermen. The fishbecame their most important symbol and it was usedfor their own protection, as well as notifying others ofmeetings. It was also are reminder of one’s spirituallife, with the fish referring to the waters of baptism.

The symbol is also easy to draw, being the inter-secting arcs of two circles of the same circumferencethat each cross the center of the other circle. Thissymbol has a length to height ratio of 265:153. It isinteresting to note that in the Gospel of John 21:11,Jesus helps his disciples with a catch of 153 fish. Thisnumber became a sacred number representing faithto early Christians.

As Masons we can identify with the need for aspecial sign or token which helps us identify one levelof worker from another and to keep out cowans andeavesdroppers.

When we understand how a child with a mobility impairment moves, we can help them move more efficiently, more effortlessly and more confidently.

And, by combining a little bit of Hollywood-style magic with a lot of medical knowledge, Shriners Hospitals for Children® is able to gain that needed understanding.

The “magic” happens in our Movement Analysis Laboratories – where high-speed cameras, reflective markers, force platforms and muscle sensors combine to record and measure how a child with a mobility impairment is moving. A team of medical professionals can then determine the best treatment plan to help the child improve.

This expensive, sophisticated technology – similar to that used by the entertainment industry to animate characters for films and video games – can also literally improve the ability and the quality of life of children. At the same time, by providing data, it can increase medical knowledge.

“That is amazing and wonderful,” said First Lady Margaret Cinotto. “In fact, it is magical.”

First Lady Margaret’s program, “The Magic of Movement” will support Shriners Hospitals for Children’s commitment to providing the services of movement analysis. Funds will be used to help ensure that our movement analysis labs have the best possible equipment, and to aid in any changes or expansions of these facilities.

Shriners Hospitals for Children is an internationally recognized leader in clinical movement analysis. Our 12 movement analysis laboratories represent the largest network of clinical movement analysis laboratories in the world, and complement our commitment to provide expert care to children with orthopaedic conditions, including those caused by neuromuscular problems, such as cerebral palsy.

We invite you to support “The Magic of Movement” program. As First Lady Margaret makes her visits throughout the year, she asks that donations be made to the fundraising efforts in lieu of personal gifts. Donations are also encouraged

Pull Tabs for Shriner’s Hospitals

Call: Laura Burgess (941) 758-9196 orMarylou Ellis (941) 484-0089 orChickie Johnson (941) 966-2678 orConnie Lawson (941) 758-8274 orJune Hutcheson (941) 723-1994

The Ladies of Sar-I Court started in 1992 collecting and donatingaluminum pull-tabs to the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund.” As ofMarch 31, 2013, they have collected 89, 199 lbs., for a total of$45,917.87 for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on PULL TABS

1. Why not collect the whole can? Collecting complete canswould require a great deal more storage space. You shouldgo ahead and recycle the rest of the can in the normal way,in the dumpster behind Sahib.

2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267.3. How many tabs will a gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds

worth.4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs

are delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/unit location) and then taken to the recycling center. Themoney netted from recycling goes directly into the “WheelChair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital forChildren.

Help us collect TABS! It’s easy and it’s fun! Put out a milk jug at every picnic or party!

Shriners Hospitals for ChildrenCollection Boxes

What are they?A plastic cube with a slot in the top.

What are the boxes for?To help collect donations, money for ourShriners Hospitals for Children to helprelieve the pressure from the HospitalDays Fund Drive.

Where are the boxes to be?In any store or business, preferably near acash register. Within eyesight of customersmaking it easy for them to put theirchange in the box.

When are the boxes to be used? All year round, so our friends can donatesmall amounts of cash at any time.

As most of you know, many businesses have some kind ofcollection boxes on their counters, so why not one of ours?

Call the Sahib Office at 366-4449if you can arrange a placement.
