Steve JohnsonPresident, GGC BMW CCA

I recall a time when I enjoyed getting e-mail. Man,those were the days! I’d get a note from Kelly (Bombeeditor) about some great event, and asking if I wanted toattend. Now, hearing from our editor through the computerbox is both good and bad. On most days it’s good, a jokehere, a casual conversation there. Today the email on myscreen reminds me that I need to complete my ramblingsyet again for another month’s issue—this is even beforeI’ve read the ramblings in print from last month.

I miss the old days when those notes were less taskoriented and more likely to be wrapped with an invite fora glass of wine, than an obligation for a deadline. Alasthe times are a changing and my board position attractsa lot of emails from a wide array of club workers withrequest for one kind of task or another to be completed.Keeping the USS Golden Gate Chapter afloat is nowpart of the fun—-along with enjoying the rest of things inlife. I call it USS GGC because at close to 5000 mem-bers it is about the same size as the 5000-person crewon an aircraft carrier. Mind you, we are still only thesecond largest chapter, and yes, I know I ranted aboutthis only last month. As chapter President I receive allthe newsletters from the other chapters, and I don’t mindtelling you how the National Capital Chapter is crowingabout taking over the number one spot. But I digress.

Something worth crowing about for us is that TomMilner’s PTG team is back on track. PTG, TurnerMotorsports, and more than a half dozen other BMWteams are ganging up on the Porsches in the 2003SPEED World Challenge heat of the ALMS. It’s going tobe great to see Hans Stuck, Boris Said, and BillAuberlen at the wheel of the PTG M3s again. I wonderhow young Justin Marks is going to pair up with the oldveterans? I wouldn’t be surprised to see Steve Dinan asan entry for some of the west coast races.

With this great opportunity to see competitive BMWsracing in mind, we contacted Pat Dewitt, president of theSacramento Chapter, to gauge interest in co-hosting acorral for the American Le Mans series at Infineon

Raceway in July. Asusual, when you have acool race corral thatneeds expert manage-ment, you can count onPat to make the eventhappen. As of this writingwe are well on the way tosecuring many door prizes andperhaps some corporatesponsorship to off-set costs. Anice side bonus of the sponsor-ship is that we expose what we do to new people. Staytuned for more next month on this exciting event.

Speaking of exciting events—just to plant a seed—Oktoberfest is coming to the west coast in 2004. TheLos Angeles Chapter will be hosting this premier eventin the Pasadena area and have requested assistancefrom the Golden Gate Chapter, which we will provide.I’m sure that volunteers will be needed to help put onwhatever events we sponsor so stay tuned for more infoon this. And, as always, if you have a suggestion on anytopic, feel free to pass it on.

USS Golden Gate ChapterA community is like a ship; everyone ought to be prepared to take the helm. —Henrik Ibsen

OKTOBERFEST 2004 – Pasadena, CaliforniaAlthough a bit off in the distance, O’fest 2004 will soon

be upon us. The ‘04 version will take place in PasadenaCalifornia, and promises to be a wonderful SouthernCalifornia experience. The three properties hosting theevent are in the city of Pasadena and have impressivesurroundings for the various events that will take placewithin the properties locations. If you saw the “PeoplesChoice Awards” on TV a few months back, the buildingused for that event will be one of our venues. The usualevents will take place including a driving school, auto-x,concour, rally, etc. not to mention the many meals andsocial events. Delight Lucas will be the contact person forthis event as the well as retaining the well oiled, highlycompetent staff from the recentTech Fest West. Let’s allhelp to make this National event a huge success.

PACIFIC REGION EVENTSSpeaking of “Tech Fest West”…hats off to the L.A.

Chapter for putting on a fine show worthy of the formatestablished by the St. Louis group.

This year’s event was the first of a traveling formatheld in City of Industry, CA. With limited planning time, the attendance was still over 130, with the dinnerapproaching 200! There were 35 to 40 vendors showingeverything from formula computer driving simulators toour usual hard parts vendors. The actual tech sessionscovered many aspects for the “shade tree” as well asmany technical issues that could not be found else-where. The setting was a wonderful property withamenities galore, however the expected SouthernCalifornia weather did not cooperate as record rains fellduring Saturday of this indoor event.

In closing, congratulations to all of our newlyappointed Chapter board members! Another year ofelections have past.

This is only but a smidgen of what has and iscurrently taking place with the Pacific Region. If youhave anything you would like to share in future Tales ofthe Pacific, please forward them to me. Future listingswill appear on a Pacific Region events Calendar, that willbe included within this format. I am also attempting toget membership stats that reflect the Pacific region.

Also, if you would like to know more of any particu-lar topic that may or may not have been mentionedplease email me. I hope to visit your chapter soon.Thank you for your continued support!

Bimmerphile Editor: Lisa FerrariBMW says new 5 Series not out before

September…Luxury carmaker BMW AG said that the newversion of its 5 Series, traditionally one of the company’s keyearnings drivers, would not be brought to the market beforeSeptember. BMW said earlier it would strive only to match lastyear’s profits in 2003 as it grapples with high developmentcosts. Sales of the outgoing 5 Series slumped 11 percent in2002 and are likely to remain weak in the first half of this year.It is banking on the new model to lift profits and sales in thesecond half of 2003, and has previously said production of thecar would begin over the summer, but given no details on thedate of its launch. Reuters

Sometime after September…The all-new BMW 5 Seriessedan will make its dramatic first appearance in the U.S. thisfall. True to long-standing BMW tradition, the new 5 Seriesbrings to market numerous technical innovations includinglightweight aluminum construction, available Active FrontSteering, Active Roll Stabilization, run-flat tires, a choice of2.5- or 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engines or 4.4-literVALVETRONIC V8, all available with either six-speed manualor six-speed STEPTRONIC automatic transmission, and iDrivecontrol concept with available heads-up display. Adaptive bi-xenon headlights and Active Cruise Control will also beavailable. BMW Press

BMW brand sales fell 7 percent in March…BMW said itsold nearly 7 percent fewer BMW brand cars last month than ayear earlier as buyers stayed away from its key 5 Series sedanahead of a replacement due in July. The Munich-basedcompany sold 88,450 BMW passenger cars in March, 6.7percent fewer than a year ago, although the continued popularityof its Mini hatchback meant group sales slipped just 1 percent to106,950 units. Sliding sales of the 5 Series sedan, a major profitdriver, combined with a blip in sales of the smaller 3-series asupdated coupe and convertible variants hit the market in March, were behind the BMW brand weakness. Reuters

BMW says to raise Mini production at Britishplant…BMW said it expected to increase the number ofpopular Mini hatchbacks it builds at its plant in Oxford,England by around 10 percent over the next few years. Thesuccess of the iconic little hatchback has taken BMWexecutives by surprise and kept the firm’s sales growth onthe rise as its core BMW brand cars reach a low point in theirproduct cycle. The company built 160,000 Minis in Oxfordlast year with the factory running at its current full capacity.Over 144,000 of those were sold in its U.K. and U.S markets.“We’re not looking at another facility to build Minis. Oxford isits home, and we have some good ideas to increase volumeproduction there step by step...180,000 a year would not be outof this world.” BMW ChiefExecutive Helmut Panke toldanalysts. The company says itnow makes money on everyMini it sells. Chief FinancialOfficer Stefan Krause said theextent of demand for the more

expensive and faster Cooper and Cooper S versions havealso taken the company aback. They had initially expectedthe basic Mini One model to account for 60 percent to 70percent of sales. “It is exactly the opposite now. Sixty to 70percent is what the Cooper and Cooper S models arecontributing, and these are very high-margin vehicles,”Krause said, adding the company was selling more optionalextras on the cars than expected. BMW Group and Brilliance Sign Joint Venture Contractfor Planned Production in China…The BMW Group andBrilliance China Automotive Holdings Limited today signed acontract for a production and distribution joint venture in Chinaat the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The signing pavesthe way for the planned local production of BMW cars inShenyang, the capital of Liaoning Province in the North-Eastpart of the People’s Republic of China. BMW Press

Bothagencies will work closely with BMW to provide strategicdirection, creative execution, production and media planning formulticultural advertising initiatives in the U.S. market. A mix of TV,print, interactive and radio will be developed for each area withinitial work expected to break later this year. “Diversity at theBMW Group, as well as respect for the individual, are values thatare at the core of our business strategy,” said Jim McDowell, VPof Marketing for BMW NA. “This is illustrated in our commitmentto diversity with our customers, employees, retail network andwith our business partners. BMW Group improves profit …The BMW Groupcontinued to develop successfully in 2002. The profit before tax(group profit from ordinary activities) reached a new high ofeuro 3,297 million, a 1.7% improvement over the previous year(2001: euro 3,242 million). The net profit for the year increasedby 8.3% to euro 2,020 million (2001: euro 1,866 million) andsurpassed the euro 2,000 million mark for the first time ever. The year 2002 was therefore the most successful year in thehistory of the BMW Group, reflecting the underlying strength ofthe group during a phase of substantial expenditure for thecurrent product and market offensive. Armored car sales on theincrease…A shooting warcontributes to growing concernsabout terrorist and criminalattacks, boosting global sales ofarmored cars. But sales are notonly booming for the massivelyarmored Audi A8s, BMW 7 seriesand Mercedes-Benz S classes

designed to protect against assassination attempts. It’s nowpossible to buy an armored BMW 3 series - even an armoredVolkswagen Passat - to ward off street criminals. Demand ishigh enough that Volkswagen group’s Audi has taken armoredcars in-house. Audi makes armored A6s in security class B4 tothwart criminal attacks and A8s with the highest security classB6/7. Last year, VW built 300 bulletproof Passats and isdeveloping plans for an armored Golf. DaimlerChrysler noticeda particularly high demand for bulletproof vehicles in LatinAmerica. Spanish Prime Minister JosÈ Maria Aznar survived a1995 assassination attack with a bomb against his armoredAudi A8. Traditionally, Spanish-market armored cars are fordefense against Basque separatists. But a DaimlerChryslerEspana source said inquiries have increased in recent monthsas tension mounted over the impending war in Iraq and theSpanish Government publicly backed the USA and Britishposition. BMW, Porsche lead Europe auto rally on U.S.sales…Porsche, BMW and DaimlerChrysler’s Mercedes unitsaid their U.S. sales were higher in March than a year ago, with new products helping all three of them buck the trend ofweaker demand in the world’s largest car market. U.S. autosales overall fell for the third consecutive month in March, although the fall of just 0.4 percent to a seasonally adjustedannual rate of 16.2 million vehicles was less than expectedamid Iraq war fears and economic uncertainty. “U.S. auto saleswere massively better than expected and fantastic resultsconsidering the war in Iraq,” said one London-based analyst.Relief that the U.S. market had held up relatively well boostedcar stocks across Europe. “Mercedes, BMW and Porsche allbenefited from a positive base effect,” said a Frankfurt-basedautos analyst. “Mercedes has gained from the fact that its E-Class saloon was being phased out in the U.S. this time lastyear, BMW from the Mini this year and Porsche from itsCayenne sports utility.” Reuters

Skateboarding BMWs - can your 5 Series grab air inthe half-pipe?...One of the concepts proposed for the futureof body-on-frame construction is GM’s Autonomy. Thatconcept’s hydrogen fuel cell-powered “skate board” chassiscontains the powertrain and mechanical components, whilethe body is a separate structure. Drive-by-wire technology isimportant for the Autonomy. Electric motors, actuators, andsoftware control the mechanical systems. There are nomechanical links between the body and chassis. This makes iteasy to produce the rolling chassis in large quantities separatefrom the bodies, and place an almost limitless number ofdifferent body styles on top of a common structure. BMW isworking on a similar concept–minus the fuel cell powertrain–for a future edition of the 5 and 7 Series vehicles. One of theconcepts currently making the rounds within BMW Technik, thecompany’s research and development arm, is a commonframe structure that can be lengthened or widened. At aminimum, it would be mated to SUV, sedan, coupe, convertibleand wagon bodies, and offer a platform for specialty vehicles, including those from BMW-owned Rolls Royce. Bodies of steeland/or aluminum would be mounted to this frame, though

recent reports suggest BMW isclose to producing a carbon fiberbody that is extremely light weight, strong, and affordable in high-price,low-volume applications.Autofieldguide.com

German dealer associationopposes new pricing structurethat leaves retailersvulnerable…BMW dealers areresisting a new contract proposal thatthey say would expose them to sharply lower profit margins.Dealers say the contract would squeeze their margins if BMWraises wholesale vehicle prices while leaving suggested retailprices unchanged. Most, if not all, European dealer contractshave margin systems that are unaffected by ex-factory priceincreases. The margins are set as a fixed percentage of the listprice. BMW has proposed splitting the basic dealer contract. One agreement would define brand standards dealers mustmeet under terms of the block exemption. Another wouldregulate the pricing structure between BMW and its dealers. Butthe two sides are still far apart on the subject of pricing structure.“The pricing structure is entirely in our sovereignty as amanufacturer,” said BMW spokesman Uwe Mahla. “And we arenot going to give that sovereignty away.” Dealers are alreadyembroiled in a lawsuit with BMW over an earlier cut in marginsfor the latest 7 series. German dealers took BMW to court overthe margin structure for the 7 Series when the car was launchedtwo years ago. The manufacturer effectively reduced the dealermargin by 2 percent on the car. BMW said the same termswould apply to each new model. “We introduced the new pricingstructure beginning with the new 7 Series to harmonize priceand margin across Europe,” said BMW’s spokesman MichaelRebstock. GM and BMW to jointly support hydrogencars…General Motors and BMW AG have agreed to workjointly on developing refueling devices for liquid hydrogenvehicles, which could replace gasoline or diesel-burning carsand trucks in the future. GM and BMW will work to establishglobal standards for hydrogen refueling devices, such as thecoupler to connect liquid hydrogen fueling pumps to futurecars, Larry Burns, GM’s head of research and development, told Reuters. “Whenyou’re developingproducts and you’relooking for ways to becost-effective, sometimesyou can get frustrated byall these subtle differ-ences” in global stan-dards, Burns said. “BothGM and BMW arestretching to havehydrogen-based vehicleson the road by 2010,” headded. Aids/LifeCycle is about peoplemaking a difference in the fight againstHIV and AIDS.

The Golden Gate Chapter Boardhas permitted me to take upsome space here to tell you

about an important cause and ask foryour support of a significant charitablecycling event I’m participating in. Thesecond annual Aids/LifeCycle benefitingthe San Francisco Aids Foundation, willtake place June 8-14, 2003 and approxi-mately 1,500 cyclists (that’s me) will rideour bikes 585 miles through beautifulCalifornia from San Francisco to LosAngeles. Yes, you heard that right—-Southwest Airlines does it in an hour, wedo it in seven days on two wheels.

Each day, starting early in themorning, we ride into the cool morningair, stopping through the day at desig-nated rest stations, and finishing up at anend city where we all camp together in atent city. With cycling hours between 6:30a.m. to 7:00 p.m. there can be some verylong days, especially when you’re tryingto grind through 100 miles. The eventorganization provides us with food, tents,

hot showers, medical services, reststops, and just about everything elsewe could possibly need to make this asafe ride for everyone.

After doing this S.F. to L.A. ride forAIDS organizations four times previ-ously, I know how tough it is to preparefor and ride in this event. Last year it wasa painful ride with the crazy hills of anew route and freezing weather, yet itwas also a joyous, memorable experi-ence that has resulted in a lot of goodfor people living with HIV and AIDS. ButAIDS is far from over and it’s a terriblepandemic—-the only way to end it is tofight back, so I’m doing just that bycommitting to this ride again.

More than 20,000 people in the SanFrancisco area are living with HIV andAIDS, and the rate of infection isgrowing, particularly among young menand in communities of color. With recentadvances in AIDS treatment, morepeople are living longer with the disease, and the need for services is greater thanever. Each year, the San Francisco AIDSFoundation and the HIV/AIDS servicesof the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Centerprovide medical services, free and low-cost medication, mental health and legal

services, housing assistance, anonymous testing, andinformation to tens of thousands of people living with HIVand AIDS. The funds raised by Aids/LifeCycle supportthese vital services.

The Aids/LifeCycle is the official cycling event of theSan Francisco AIDS Foundation and the L.A. Gay andLesbian Center. It is the only long distance cycling AIDSfundraiser in California produced by the organizations thatwill benefit from the funds raised by the event, whichensures that focus will remain firmly helping those whoneed it. A requirement for us is that each rider must raisea minimum of $2,500 to participate.

I have supported the San Francisco Aids Founda-tion similarly in 1995, 1996, 1997, and again last year

A week long strenuous biking event like this isn’t something you canjust leap into without some pretty intense training leading up it . For thoselike Jeff who’s leisure time interests aren’t focused on just riding, it takesa real commitment to make the time to get ready for the event. Jeff tellsus a bit about what is involved with his training. —kk

The warm winter in California this year is making outdoor activities adream come true. My training got off to a later start this year because ofsome very time consuming work projects in December through midJanuary. Since then I’ve done a number of “short” 30 mile rides aroundthe Portola Valley, Woodside, and Los Altos areas. In February I bit thebullet and rode a 60 mile training ride through the east bay with my friendMelissa (who’s doing the AIDS ride for the first time) on . We started atthe Union City Bart station, rode through Hayward, over 580 to Dublinthen into Danville for a lunch break. The route back was similar but took adetour through picturesque Niles Canyon.

In March Mel and I did another training ride with 45 other ridersleaving from San Francisco. We started in Golden Gate Park and quickly

for the inaugural Aids/LifeCycle event. Last year weraised nearly $4.3 million, and I’m proud to tell you thatalmost all of that went directly to services thanks to a fewindividual donors who underwrote a good portion of thecosts to produce the event!

I’m excited to help make this year’s event moresuccessful than ever. To give me a jump start, our GoldenGate Chapter has generously contributed $2002 to thecause—a figure that symbolizes the BMW that made ourclub strong. This is the largest single contribution I haveever received and I can’t express in words how happy I amto receive this magnanimous gift on behalf of SFAF and

It iscompletely tax deductible and Aids/LifeCycle will mail youa receipt for your tax records.

Since the donations are tracked by participantthere’s an added bonus. We’ll be able to track yourdonations (no personal information is disclosed on thisstatement) and report that back to BMW CCA for thematching funds! The event is coming up early nextmonth, so please submit your pledge as soon as isconvenient. If you are reading this after the fact, DON’TPANIC! The form should be available for up to 30 days

worked our way over the Golden GateBridge. From there we descended intothe postcard-perfect bayside town ofSausalito. Exiting Sausalito we hookedup with a nice bike path and surfacestreets taking us through Mill Valley,Larkspur, San Anselmo, Ross, andfinally to our lunch stop in Fairfax. There,I grabbed a taco that was the size of asmall child. At least four people com-mented, “THAT’s a taco?!” Fairfax—-home of the taco grandé. 43 miles later,we were back in San Francisco.

Mid March brought a few weekendsof rain, but that didn’t stop me. I have fullrain gear which makes riding in the wetsomewhat tolerable. Two weekends in arow I rode through down-pours, but hey,no one said this would be easy.

Late March brought some reallywarm “summer” like conditions. On aparticularly warm weekend I switchedmachines and took my mountain bikeout for some serious hill climbing andsingle-track mud slushing in the StevensCanyon area of Cupertino. This being

one of my favorite mountain ride loops, Istarted up the steep and never-endingMontebello road, passing Ridge wineryand up to the top of the hill. It’s an hourlong climb...a real grind as we cyclistslike to call it. Then the dirt roadsdescend into the beautiful canyon whereI managed to get a SPEEDING TICKET!Yes, the park rangers were set up at thebase of the downhill with radar gunszapping cyclists as they passed. I wasclocked doing 24 in a 15 zone. With allthe troubles in the world, this was justimpossible to believe. Wasn’t there someangry teen about to set fire to a Forrestsomewhere?! Surely they could findhigher priorities. Whatever, I took theticket and carried on my way throughstreams and narrow passages. All in all,it was exhausting work but I felt bettertrained as a result.

My training goal for April is doingminimum 50 miles rides, in May 75 milerides, and on occasion, I may go throughon the 100 miler—-but certainly not rightaway. Whew...it takes a lot of training todo this ride and I know I can do it!

From the paincomes the dream. From the dreamcomes the vision. From the visioncomes the people. From the peoplecomes the power. From the powercomes the change.—Peter Gabriel

I realize this is not what you expected to read inyour car club newsletter. But just as our non-profit clubrelies upon our membership for support, the SFAF andAids/LifeCycle also rely on community support to helpthose in need. L.A.’s Tech Fest: A Gateway to Knowledge

♦ Charlie Burke of Bentley Publishers provided agood discussion of OBD II with a focus on how it relatesto our BMWs. OBD II software contains extensivediagnostic capability. It not only, for example, canidentify that there is a misfire in the engine; it canidentify which cylinder is misfiring. If the misfire issevere enough to damage the catalyst, OBD II enginecontrol modules will switch off fuel to the misfiringcylinder. (A BMW CCA Tech Rep advises: to determinethe cause of a misfire, move parts - plugs, coil-overs,injectors, etc. The problem will follow the bad part andOBD II will identify it for you.) OBD II cars must com-plete a “drive cycle” to perform all of their analyses.Cars that are not driven in varied circumstances maynever complete a drive cycle. That could prevent use ofthe OBD II monitors to diagnose problems or to demon-strate that the car is functioning normally.

♦ Car Soft now makes a reader for Motronic 3.3.1cars (like my ’95 525i!) that can read information beyondjust codes. The $1,600 price still discourages me, but Isure would like a reader that I could use to learn fuel trimvalues and diagnostically useful information.

♦ Late-model BMW wiring diagrams are ONLYavailable on DIS systems. If that does not change, ownermaintenance – and probably independent shop mainte-

The event previously known as Gateway Tech (hosted bythe St. Louis Chapter) has made some changes. It wasdecided to turn it into a roaming event, like Oktoberfest,

and give St. Louis a break after so many years of dedicated workon this annual technical symposium. This year’s event TechFestWest was hosted by the Los Angles Chapter, BMW CCA, withtech sessions on Friday and Saturday, March 14 and 15. I at-tended many sessions and will share a few tidbits with you. WhatI offer is not a summary of the sessions; it is just tidbits thatwere interesting to me. The sessions contained a vast amount ofinformation of great benefit to CCA members.

nance too – will be a thing of the past. With the currentgovernment pressure on access to information, I’mhopeful that it will change.

♦ Jay Morris of Ground Control spoke aboutstreet and race shocks. Most shock travel velocity is inthe less-than 3 inch/second range. Shock tuning mustfocus on that range. The force-velocity curve definesshock performance. The force required to move a shockin both bump and rebound increases with velocity, butthe relationship is non-linear. Most shocks “blow off”above about 6 in/sec – that is, the force required tomove them at higher velocities increases at a muchlower rate.

Jay believes that monotube shocks are superior;however, it is easier to make twin-tube shocks adjustable.Only Bilstein makes monotube shocks. “Single-adjustable”shocks adjust rebound only. “Double-adjustable” shocksalso adjust high-velocity bump. “Triple-adjustable” shocksalso adjust low-velocity bump. The best-handling (that is,fastest) racing shock will not feel good to the driver. He willwant more rebound damping.

♦ On bump, shocks control car response whenthey are stiffer than the springs. Shocks can lose upto 50% of their 1 inch/second damping force in aslittle as 30,000 miles.

from tires rated W, X or Y, since the Z is now redundantand just a hold-over from the past.

Calculating the number of tire revolutions per mile istheoretically complicated. The effective rolling-tire outsidediameter is less than that given by a simple calculationbecause of the flattening at the bottom of the tire. However, a very useful, approximate formula is Revs PerMile = 20,800 / Tire OD in inches. For the 235/45/ZR17tire, OD=(235x0.45x2/25.4)+17 = 25.327 inches.

David recommends that punctures be repaired onlyoff the wheel by installing an integral patch and rubberpull-through plug. Apex makes such a product. Headvised not to use “rope”-style repair materials. Evenafter a proper repair, the tire speed rating is lost.

♦ Dean Weekes of Michelin Tires provided anextensive discussion. The part that really grabbed myattention was a slide showing a tire undergoing perfor-mance testing. The mounted and properly inflated tirewas rolling under load in contact with the outer diameterof a large steel drum. Tires have a critical speed abovewhich they should not be operated. That speed is afunction of load and pressure, among other things. Whenoperated above their critical speed, tires deflect fromround. A standing wave appears in them behind thecontact patch. Dean’s slide showed a tire with a standingwave with a maximum deflection of about an inch, slowlydamping through 180 degrees of rotation. The rate ofheat generation in an operating tire is a function ofspeed. Below the critical speed, the function is near-linear. Above the critical speed, the rate of heat genera-tion increases non-linearly and very rapidly. The result ofcontinuing such abuse will be tire failure.

♦ John Rastetter of the Tire Rack provided agood, hands-on demonstration of many tire performanceconcepts. We students were provided with pencils witherasers and strips of sandpaper. John related the

♦ Lisa Gutierrez of Brembo spoke about theirbraking systems. The most important thing that she saidis that Brembo does not sell seal kits for their calipers. That is totally unacceptable to me. (Perhaps I misunder-stood her??) Brembo’s four-piston calipers use smaller-diameter pistons on the leading edge to “equalizeclamping force”. Calipers are designed for each vehiclesuch that its existing master cylinder may continue to beused – it would appear that piston swept volume is thesame as on stock calipers! I found that quite surprising.Brembo make an extensive line of replacement rotorsfor BMWs, including cross-drilled and slotted rotors.Interestingly, the holes in the cross-drilled rotors arechamfered to minimize pad wear, whereas the slots inthe slotted rotors are not chamfered. The slotted rotorsare intended for aggressive applications and areintended to be more aggressive on the pads.

♦ Pete Stackhouse of TC Kline Racing talkedabout the team and offered some information of interestto those with camber plates on their front suspensions.Adjusting camber at the track by leaning the shocks inwill also move toe-in alignment toward increased toe-out. That is not a bad thing, since it will improve turn-in.On the street, a bit of toe-in helps to offset camber wearon the inner edge of the tire.

♦ David Thomas of Toyo Tires provided generalinformation on tires. All tires, including spare tires, should be replaced at 6 years of age due to naturaldeterioration of the rubber. (My spare is about 8 yearsold. It doesn’t look deteriorated. I’ll have to think aboutthis a bit!) Tire markings are easily interpreted. Forexample: 215/55 ZR 16 93W is a tire with a SectionWidth of 215mm, an Aspect Ratio of 55%, a SpeedRating of Z (149 mph +), radial piles, a 16” rim diameter,a Load Rating of 93, and a Speed Rating of W (168mph). We can expect that the “ZR” rating will disappear

conditions we created with our ‘laboratory equipment’ toreal-world tire performance. Tread-block squirm variationwith tread depth was well demonstrated with our tools.

♦ Roy Howell of Redline Oil presented veryinteresting material on lube oils. Rather than providetidbits from his presentation, I asked him if he wouldbe willing to represent the material to the GoldenGate Chapter. He said that he would. We will try toarrange for him to make his presentation in latesummer or early fall.

♦ Several of BMW CCA’s Technical ServiceAdvisors were on hand. They held four sessions inwhich they answered questions from the audience. Theyprovided a lot of advice in response to specific ques-tions. The bits that I took away are:

⇒ Stabilit 22 is an electrical terminal coating thatimproves contact. It is effective, expensive, and hard to find.

⇒ Do not use hypoid lubes in BMW manual

transmissions. They include a reactive form of sulfur that isharmful to transmission internals. If it smells, don’t use it.

⇒ For soldering circuit boards, consider use of aWeller Self Sensing 126 soldering iron and Ersin multi-core small-diameter solder.

⇒ VANOS systems are prone to failure (the spiralgears stick and cam timing will not change) in cars withmore than 100k miles. One way to check VANOS is tounplug the solenoid and, with the engine running, energize it. With a mechanic’s stethoscope, you shouldhear the oil-driven plunger shift its position.

⇒ After repairing an OBD II vehicle, clear codesand erase adaptations. To erase adaptations quickly on aBMW requires either a MoDIC or DIS (or, presumably, the new GT-1). Alternatively, disconnect the battery for 20minutes. Then touch the battery cables together tocompletely discharge any capacitors – or short thecables through a small resistor. Don’t forget the need tocomplete a drive cycle after the repair.

Of course wehad to look at

cars too!

Bangle aims for distinctive models

Chief designer Chris Bangle wants BMW’s model line to have strong differentiation. “Wedeveloped a spectrum which leads into two different directions. At the one end of the spectrumstands the 7 Series with a sculptural, present shape. At the other end stands the BMW Z4.”Without question, the shape of each is distinctive. That can be a good thing, because it signalsuniqueness. But it also can open the door to criticism - something to which Bangle is nostranger. Last year it seemed that Bangle was under fire from all sides. BMW enthusiasts, automotive journalists and even auto executives ripped his redesign of the 7 Series - particu-larly for the high-end shape of the trunk. People wondered why the German automaker wasbeing so radical with its most conservative model. But Bangle took the criticism in stride. TheBMW management board stuck to Bangle’s design course and has been giving him fullbacking. Burkhard Goeschel, head of product development, praises the “distinctiveness” ofBangle’s work. Bangle himself declares, “When there are controversial discussions about ourproducts, that shows that our cars have personality.” So don’t expect the distinctive rear tochange when it’s time to do the next face-lift on the 7 Series. Says Bangle: “The rear has its ownpersonality, which belongs to that product.” BMW is hoping to shake things up with a series of other changes. In July the new BMW 5 Series model willbe launched. Bangle denies that the 5 Series originally had been designed to be a smaller version of the 7 Series but was toned down because ofharsh criticism of the 7 Series. “The 5 Series is not a small 7 series,” Bangle says. “The development of the new 5 Series had already been in full swingbefore the 7 Series was launched on the market.” Automotive News

BMW Press releaseWoodcliff Lake, New Jersey, April 1, 2003At first sight, the sporty and elegant styling of

the all-new 5 Series is apparent. It exudes bothpower and sophistication - from the muscular frontend with its unmistakable curved headlight clustersfeaturing four round headlights, to the coupe-likegreenhouse, to the sleek trunk with angulartaillights. Not immediately apparent is the fact thatthe 5 Series has grown slightly to accommodatemore passenger and luggage space.

The interior is fresh and new, and contains some of therenowned interplay of convex and concave surfaces from the BMWZ4. Featuring the iDrive concept, the 5 Series is a pioneer in itsclass in driver-oriented ergonomics. Most functions essential fordriving are located directly in front of the driver, on or around thesteering wheel or column. Basic comfort functions are housed inthe center console, while all other settings, functions and servicesare located quickly and efficiently within the iDrive Controller and

Theoptional head-up display makes a significant contributionto active safety, by presenting important driving informa-tion directly in the driver’s line of vision. This new systemeven allows the driver to select which information willappear on the windshield, for example speed or naviga-tion instructions. Passenger comfort is enhanced by thenew automatic climate control system, which featuresevaporation temperature control. The rear seating areahas grown from the previous model, and trunk area issignificantly expanded as well.

Technical Highlights:♦ Lightweight construction featuring a body made from steeland aluminum with an all-aluminum suspension and chassis.

♦ Available Active Front Steering, Active Roll Stabilization and run-flat tires. * Choice of a 2.5- or 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engines or4.4-liter VALVETRONIC V8 all available with either six-speed manualor six-speed STEPTRONIC automatic transmission.

♦ iDrive control concept with available head-up display.♦ Available adaptive bi-xenon headlights and Active Cruise Control

The first version of the all-new 5 Series, the 530i,will arrive this October with its turbine-smooth 3.0-literin-line 6-cylinder engine that produces 225 horsepowerand 214 lb-ft of torque. It will be followed quickly by twoadditional models. The 525i features a 184 horsepower2.5-liter in-line six with 175 lb-ft of torque. The new 545iwill feature the same award-winning, leading edge V8engine that powers the 745i, which uses double VANOSvariable valve-timing, VALVETRONIC throttle-lessengine control and infinitely variable intake manifoldrunner-length control, to produce 325 pulse-poundinghorsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. A 6-speed manualtransmission will be standard on all three versions, andan optional fully-electronic STEPTRONIC six-speedautomatic will also be available.

The all-new body makes extensive use of aluminumto form an extremely stiff yet lightweight platform that is,in fact, far lighter than its predecessor. This leads tobetter performance and fuel economy and an ideal front/rear weight distribution, in a car that is also larger than itspredecessor. The rigid chassis and perfectly-tunedsuspension are crafted entirely from aluminum.

The 5 Series debuts the world’s first Active FrontSteering system. Active Front Steering offers a new levelof driving comfort, enjoyment and safety on the road. Thissophisticated system electronically varies the degree towhich the front wheels turn in relation to steering inputfrom the driver. Under normal driving conditions at lowand medium speeds the steering ratio becomes moredirect, meaning the wheels turn relatively more in relationto input from the driver, reducing the amount the steeringwheel must be turned. This enhances the car’s perfor-mance in city traffic, when parking or in curves. At highspeeds, the steering ratio becomes less direct, meaningthe wheels turn relatively less in relation to input from thedriver and thus provides superior directional stability. AFSworks hand-in-hand with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)by monitoring the yaw rate and changing the steeringangle accordingly. This reduces the number of DSCinterventions and thus offers optimum control comfort forthe driver and passengers.

Also networked with AFS and DSC are the optionalAdaptive Headlights. With this system, the two bi-xenonheadlights are controlled in real-time as a function of thesteering wheel angle, yaw rate and road speed, perfectlyilluminating the road ahead in a bend. As an additionalactive safety enhancement the new 5 Series featuresAdaptive Brakelights. When the driver applies the brakeshard, or upon activation of the ABS, the rear taillights jointhe brakelights at the same intensity to warn the vehiclesbehind that hard braking is taking place.

Active Cruise Control (ACC), recently introduced onthe 7 Series, will also available now on the new 5. Thisradar-based system is specially designed for highwaydriving, which makes it easy to maintain a safe andcomfortable distance from the car in front.

I have returned. I’ve been hiding in shame because Ihad sold my soul to the Soccer Mom devil. It’s a goodthing BMW gladly accepts cold cash to give it back.

Babydom started the subtle slide. When my wife waspregnant with our first daughter I was a BMW driver, with a Toyota 4x4 on the side. She also owned a Toyota4x4 as well as a Jeep Wrangler. Between these four, weonly had one baby-safe vehicle. She decided to getsomething more “family” oriented – a Jeep Cherokee4x4, with 5-speed manual, naturally.

With my wife being much shorter than me, there wasonly one seating arrangement: me driving, wife in thepassenger seat, and daughter #1 in the rear middle. When daughter #2 arrived, daughter #1 was now in theforward facing seat, and the seating arrangementbecame: me driving, wife in passenger seat, daughter #1behind me, and daughter #2 behind wife. It soon becameapparent that daughter #1 could get severely injured in anaccident due to her proximity to my seat. Plus, thepassenger seat was too far forward for me with daughter#2’s seat behind it. Time to get rid of the Cherokee forsomething even more “family” oriented. The transactionwith the Soccer Mom devil was about to take place.

What do we get, a bigger SUV? Let’s see, they getcrappy gas mileage and don’t have to meet crash safetystandards—my wife and I ruled them out in a microsec-ond. Our thinking diverged dramatically at this point.

Back in 1997 when we had taken European deliveryof my M3, I noticed the abundance of E36 Touringsrunning around Germany. I could easily see one in myfuture. Despite the nightmares that most of us 40-somethings still have about Dad’s station wagon (forme, it was a Monarch Yellow with baby-poop brown vinylinterior Le Mans station wagon), this was different – itwas a Sport Wagon! By the fall of 2000 BMW NA wasfinally selling the E46 Touring here. But unfortunately,my wife had her own station wagon flashbacks, “No way,it’s a station wagon, and I won’t drive one.”

We had ruled out SUVs, but I brought up the idea ofthe new BMW X5 SAV. It was designed from the groundup like a car, and it would handle like a BMW, so it hadto be safe. “No way”, says she.

No?! What the…?Believe me, I had tried to convert her. I let her drive

my M3. I encouraged her to drive it. She didn’t want to.She was too nervous, “You’ll get too stressed out with fearof me wrecking it,” she said. I thought I had hid that better.Trying another tactic, I offered to pay for a driving school(car control clinic and an high performance driving

Twisted returns to the pages of the Bombe after a fouryear hiatus. Enjoy! -kk

school). Her reply, “I am not interested in driving that fast.”I guess she never forgot the ride with Ken

Robertson at Laguna Seca. The car looked safe – anE30 325 with 5-point harnesses and a roll-cage. Howwas I supposed to know that this seemingly mild-mannered gray haired man with a big smile had putNITROUS in the damned thing? The roll cage shouldhave tipped me off, but I was younger then.

The only remaining choice was a… mi… mini...minivan. My wife can be very determined, and her mindwas made up. I tried to delude myself into acceptance. Ijust had to find the least nauseating one. A 2001Chrysler Town and Country Limited with all-wheel driveand power doors all around was our final answer. It evenhad a remote control for the doors! Hey, I had to findsomething positive.

Months later, there was a momentary glimmer ofhope when my wife found a four-page poster of aburgundy X5 in BMW Magazine. She walks up to meand says “I want. How much?” I told her. She replies“Well, maybe when it’s time to replace the minivan in afew years.” This is where a cunning plan comes together.

The minivan has the child seats, and because of ourwork schedules, my wife and I frequently drive sepa-rately. When it was my day to pick up the girls, I drovethe M3 to work and would then swap vehicles with mywife. She had to drive the M3 to get home. Now and thenI’d hear comments about enjoying the drive.

Eventually, badly worn out shocks and bushings inthe M3 mandated the (necessary) expense of H&R coil-over suspension kit with polyurethane bushings. I startedhearing remarks like, “I really like they way it handlesnow,” and “It’s a lot of fun to drive home.”

Ah ha! She actually likes it.Then, out of the blue last October, she tells me, “I

want to get rid of the minivan and get an X5.” Usingevery ounce of restraint to preserve my calm exterior, Icoyly reply, “It’s not even two years old, we should waituntil we’ve paid more of it off.” She was adamant, “I’vealready figured out how much the minivan is worth andhow much we owe. I don’t like driving the minivananymore because it doesn’t handle like your M3. ”

IT WORKED! Her mind was made up and didn’teven bother to test drive anything else. I wasn’t aboutto complain.

Several weeks ago we picked up a 2003 X5 strappedwith the sport package. Maybe the contrast between aminivan and the X5 was what made it seem extraordi-nary, but it’s everything a BMW should be. My wife wasnot only relieved to sell the minivan, but really glad to getrid of it. We agreed to never consider a minivan again.

Now I read that BMW is resurrecting their plansto build…a MINIVAN!
