ALBION CENTRAL SCHOOL --- Achievement, Character, and Success for Life!

Welcome back! the 2011-2012 school year is just around the corner, with classes beginning for students on Wed., Sept. 7, 2011. the summer staff has worked hard to ensure that the schools are ready for our students’ return, having cleaned, waxed, and freshened up the buildings. the middle school cafeteria will have received a

significant makeover before opening day with the ceiling, walls, and floor all refinished. one wing of the elementary school will also be updated, in keeping with our rotation there. in addition to facility changes, we have been busy selecting new staff members to fill some, but not all of our vacancies. Some positions will not be filled as we continue to operate with a conservative, responsible budget that balances the needs of our students with the ability of our taxpayers to fund our program. Speaking of budget, the Board of education adopted the 2011-2012 tax rate at their August meeting. the district tax levy remains unchanged (as detailed when the community approved the school budget in May). Because of some minor increases in the tax rolls (the total assessed value of all property in the district) the tax rate will actually drop a bit for the coming year. this is the fifth year without an increase in the tax levy—and the $16.84 rate is .13 percent lower than last year because of the assessment changes. in the coming year, Greta Bohn will join us as a Speech pathologist, replacing the retiring Barbara dunham. cathy pepe and Sarah Williams were hired as teacher aides to replace Barbara collyer and christine Smith, who also retired. Kristie campbell will move into the position don Bemont’s retired from while robin Bower moves into the pAce position made available by Kathy costello’s retirement. in addition, the following individuals have retired: deb Wilson in technical support, Susan cummings in the elementary office, teacher aide darlene Sullivan, and high school math teacher Barbara navarra. We welcome our new personnel and wish each of our retirees well as they move on to new a new chapter in their lives. in addition to preparing our buildings and filling our staff roster, we dedicated a great deal of time this summer to improving instruction and meeting new state mandates. to meet the new teacher evaluation mandate, administrators attend a three-day session advancing our schools in teacher evaluation. teams of teachers and administrators met around our district’s rti (response to intervention) plan to ensure that struggling students receive the support they need. We have also been busy learning about the common core Standards - a series of learning standards developed and adopted by more than 30 states, including new York. these new standards will replace the current new York State learning Standards. We have also adjusted (with much happiness, i must add) to the return of the January regents exams. While the state had eliminated these in their original budget deliberations, private donors, including new York city mayor Michael Bloomberg have funded, at least for this year, their return. We are pleased with their return and will continue to lobby the state to offer them past the coming year. it has been a busy summer, but we have missed our most important element: our students. We are excited about their return and look forward to their energy bringing the life of a vibrant learning community back to our campus!

parents are requested to keep and have their child wear the bus tag (received in the mail) the first two weeks of school. this helps staff to identify kindergartners.

New York State Education Law Health Examination Requirements

As part of a required school health examination, a student is weighed and his/her height is measured. recent changes to the new York State education law require that districts now calculate students’ body mass index (BMi) using this information. the BMi may help health care professionals determine if the student’s weight is in a healthy range or is too high or too low. please remember that this is only one measurement and is not used in isolation to make healthcare decisions. this information will remain confidential in each student’s health record. this assessment will occur in grade pre-K or Kindergarten, and in grades 2, 4, 7 and 10.

the State education department (Sed) may select a number of districts to participate in a survey designed by the new York State department of health. if our school is selected to participate, we will be reporting specific information to the department of health. districts will be responsible for sharing weight status information. no names and no information about individual students will be sent or shared. As the parent/guardian, you may choose to have your child’s information excluded from this survey report. the information being sent to the nYS department of health will help to develop programs and services that make it easier for children to be healthier.

if you have questions or concerns regarding this survey or the data collection process, please contact Mary leto, Assistant Superintendent of instruction, at 589-2055. in addition, if you do not wish to have your child’s weight, height and BMi information shared with the nYS health department, please call the building-level nurses:

Asbestos Inspection Information In compliance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), asbestos reinspections were performed in each of our school buildings for asbestos containing building materials. The inspection findings are in the asbestos management plan and are on file in each school administrative office and our central administration office. The EPA requires us to perform periodic inspection every six months and triennial reinspections of the asbestos materials every three years. During the 2010 school year, the NYS Department of Labor (NYSDOL) certified asbestos inspector performed these reinspections and a certified NYSDOL asbestos planner reviewed the reinspection results. Six-month periodic inspections were also performed, submitted to the District and filed for review. No significant findings were noted during the reinspection of our school buildings. All asbestos materials in our schools remain in good condition, and we will continue to manage them in place as recommended by EPA guidelines and the NYSDOL certified asbestos management planner. Results of the inspection are on file in three locations: 1) the District Central Administrative Office, 2) the School Administrative Offices, and 3) the Superintendent of Maintenance & Operations Office. You are welcome to view these materials anytime during normal school hours (Mon. - Fri., 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Please contact the district office at (585) 589-2056 to set up an appointment.

ACS is Named a School of Distinctionby the NYSPHSAA

ACS Athletic Director Randy Knaak presented the School of Distinction award to the Board of Education at its August Board meeting. Albion Superintendent, Michael Bonnewell, told the Board, “This award recognizes the fact that all of our 17 varsity sports teams throughout the 2010-2011 school year were awarded the NYS Scholar Athlete Team. The outstanding academic performance of our student athletes was recognized with the 2010-2011 Scholar-Athlete Team School of Distinction Award. This is the second consecutive year that our athletes have earned this recognition. The honor is awarded to those high schools where every varsity team achieved Scholar-Athlete Team status for earning at least a 90 percent average. Our coaches are great at promoting the importance of academics to our student/athletes as is evidenced by our receiving this award.”

Congratulations to all of the athletes and coaches!

AHS Band Alumni,Dust Off That Old Instrument!

All AHS band alumni, regardless of current skill level, are invited to join the Albion High School Pep Band in the stands for the homecoming football game as the Purple Eagles take on Newfane on Fri., Sept. 30. Your current level of ability is just right for the pep band, where the emphasis is on making a lot of noise, having fun, and cheering the Purple Eagles on to victory! (Besides, there will be plenty of current band students there to carry

the musical load!) Meet at 6:15 p.m. in the HS band room prior to the game. The Pep Band plays until the end of halftime. Phone the band office at 589-2050 x2405, or email at [email protected], with any questions. Hope to see you there!

Mandatory Dates for Middle School Sports Physicals Fall 2011 Winter 2011-12 Spring 2012 Sign-ups - - - Oct. 4-6 Feb. 14-16 Athletes Meet w/ Athletic Director - - - Oct. 12 Feb. 28 Preliminary Evaluations - - - Oct. 12-20 Feb. 28-Mar. 4 Coaches Meetings - - - Oct. 20 Mar. 9 Private Physicals - - - Oct. 22 Mar. 11 Physical by School Doctor - - - Oct. 27 Mar. 16 Interval Health History Form Distributed to Athletes 1st practice Nov. 1 Mar. 30 Interval Health History Form Must be Returned 3rd practice Nov. 3 April 1

Allow us to explain the procedure:Please keep in mind that Fall sports physicals are conducted in May, therefore some of the verbiage below will be inaccurate when referring to "4-5 weeks prior to the start of the season," etc.

Sign-ups - The nurses will generally begin sign-ups 4-5 weeks prior to the start of each season. The students will sign up on a list provided by their second-block teacher. If a student misses the sign-up it is his or her responsibility to stop down to the nurse's office.

AD Meeting with Athletes - The goal of this meeting is to inform the athletes that they need to take care of each task within the time frames given; there needs to be a sense of urgency to complete each task. Also, students may sign up for a sport at this time.

Preliminary Evaluations - The nurses will conduct the prelims to get the athletes ready to see the doctor. The athletes need to honor all passes from the nurse.

Coaches Meetings - One week prior to the physicals being conducted by the school doctor coaches will hold their pre-season meeting to make sure all athletes are set with having their physical the following Wednesday.

Private Physicals - Athletes are allowed to have private physicals. However, they will only be acccepted up until the Friday before the scheduled physical date by the school doctor.

Physical by School Doctor - Usually given the Wednesday before the season starts.

Interval Health History Forms - These forms will be handed out at the first scheduled practice by the coach and must be returned at the beginning of the third scheduled practice. If it isn't turned in the athlete will not practice.

Health History Forms (yellow form) - This form must be turned in to the nurse prior to the student's physical.

Any absence for a school day or portion thereof shall be recorded as excused or unexcused in accordance with the Comprehensive Student Attendance Policy. Unexcused absences, tardiness, and early departures will result in disciplinary sanctions as described in the District’s Code of Conduct. Both the Comprehensive Student Attendance Policy and the Code of Conduct are available on our website www.albionk12.org or by e-mailing Mary Ann Donnelly at [email protected] or by calling 589-2056 ext 2990.
