~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My dearest sisters and brothers in Christ,
Thank God there is Christ.
Have you viewed our Vision statement lately? At Holy Trinity we strive to be Christ centered- partnering, praising, spiritual, supporting, growing, serving. This statement encapsulates who we have been for over 100 years, who we are now, and who we strive to be in the future. This is what we have been trying to achieve for over a century. It’s also something we realize we cannot truly be. At times we can hold onto one or a few of the power words. But, we lack the energy or compassion or spirit to be all things at one time.
Thank God there is Christ.
Our last two vision statement areas to concentrate are: growing and serving. Over the past year we have grown in ways which may not seem apparent. For one, we have lived, worshipped, and served during a pan-demic. This was new, scary ground for everyone. I truly believe that our church family was a beacon of hope for the people of Catasauqua during this time. We offered more worship services and prayer time than ever. This helped in two-fold. First, we said that we can be responsible and safe. Second, we will not stop praising God. “How can I keep from singing?” Not to say we sang during the shutdown, but rather that we lifted our spirits to God and let them sing the heavenly song of awe and gratefulness.
Another area of growth has been the new faces at Holy Trinity. While some faces will, and should, be return-ing to their home congregations as they open, others have come who were church homeless. While we are a no pressure church and people are free to be with us as is right for them, we do need to figure out when the right time is to invite them into our active family. I pray that by the fall, we can renew and restart most, if not all, of our ministries- like coffee and conversation which I miss terribly.
To end, lets talk about serving. You have been remarkable in this category probably since the start of our church in the 1800’s. The past year has not slowed us one bit. In fact, we have branched into new ways to serve which includes sitting on school district panels, providing professional help like carpentry, accounting, financial help to local agencies for no charge to them. We have stepped up our kitchen work and figured-out how to serve all food “to go”. We have continued our help in finding housing, preparing applications for fi-nancial and food assistance, and providing funding when families were struggling. While we have shined, it’s now time to shift focus on the reason for our successes. It’s time we all say together:
THANK GOD THERE IS CHRIST! Our inspiration, our source, our redeemer. Without Christ, we are nothing. With Christ, we are complete. Amen and Amen.
Your fellow servant in Christ,
Pr. Brian
At the end of May, the Church had a budget surplus of $1,178.88. The budget sur-
plus at the end of May, 2020 was $7,140.90—$5,962.02 more. Year-to-date, the Church
has generated a 5-month net profit of $3,390 thus far in 2021.
All of our bills are current as we enter the summer months.
“Special” gifts received in May were as follows:
$ 800.00 - Pastor’s Discretionary Fund
$7,100.00 - Capital Campaign
$ 275.00 - Neighbor Support Fund
$ 50.00 - Wish List
$ 62.94 - “Morning Glories” Fund
$ 15.00 - Building Fund
$ 50.00 - Shannon Stewart Memorial
$ 50.00 - June Hahn Memorial
$ 20.00 - Bulletins
$ 400.00 - Pre-filled Communion Cups
A total of $510.00 was sent to “Church World Service” from the Mother’s Day Blan-
ket Dedications. The “Morning Glories” purchased $50 worth of scrip cards for the office
to use as needed. A check of $218.00 was sent to the Catasauqua Public Library as a dona-
tion from yard sale items that were sold by Joe Schwindenhammer.
Needless to say, thank you to all for these “Special” gift donations.
The summer months of June through September have historically been a major
challenge for the Church financially. Please continue to support Holy Trinity’s ministry
during the summer and please remember to make up for missed Sundays. I hope everyone
has a safe, fun-filled summer. If you haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, the Church’s
new air conditioning system works great. See you in Church.
What is the “Simply Giving” Program?
The Simply Giving Program offers a variety of
secure electronic payment solutions that allow
individuals to make regular offering payments
to churches. It is convenient for you and pro-
vides much-needed consistency for the
church. Collection basket offerings can fluctu-
ate significantly from week to week but when
contributions are automated, the church re-
ceives funds on a steady, uninterrupted basis.
The Simply Giving Program helps churches
transition to an era in which families increas-
ingly expect the same electronic payment op-
tions they have in all other areas of personal
finance.
To learn more, call Robin at the church office. 610-264-2641.
At any time, you can give donations to the
“Pastor’s Discretionary Fund”. This fund is used
to give temporary financial assistance to people
of our congregation and community when a sud-
den need arises. You may send contributions to
the church or place them in the offering plate on
Sunday mornings. Please mark your checks or
envelopes “Pastor’s Discretionary Fund”.
It is with joy that our Church Council has made the
following updates to Holy Trinity's COVID19-related
policies regarding gatherings at Holy Trinity, effective
July 2021:
~ Masks will no longer be required, including Sunday morning
worship. If you are not fully vaccinated or feel more comforta-
ble with the protection of a mask, we encourage you to continue
wearing a mask.
~ The ribbons for social distancing will be removed from all of
our pews. We invite you to seat yourselves where you feel com-
fortable.
~ The ushers will no longer dismiss us by rows. Once Pastor
Brian has dismissed us, feel free to exit.
~ The 8:00 and 9:00 services will continue to be about 35
minutes long; the 10:30 service will return to the full liturgy,
lasting about an hour.
~ No changes are being made to the way we pass the peace, but
there will also be no restrictions imposed.
~ We will resume having volunteers to usher and to read the
lessons. If Robin schedules you and you are unable to attend,
please contact Robin in the church office (610-264-2641).
After the flurry of the 30HourFamine, the Junior Basket Raffle, and the Taco Bar, the youth are enjoying the doldrums of summer. Details from the Taco Bar will be included in the September newsletter, but until then, thank you to everyone who supported the event by preparing the delicious food and baked goods, serving, setting up and taking down, and assisting with publicity - and of course, thank you to each of you who attended and/or invited friends to make this by-donation event a success for the Vision Alive orphan-age in Kenya. Looking back for a moment to the Junior Basket Raffle in May, I want to acknowledge the businesses that donated gift certificates or tickets to the raffle: Build-A-Bear Workshop, Giant Food Stores, MacArthur Road & Coplay, Becky's Drive-In, The Disney Store, The Children's Place, Lush, Crazy Cones, the Iron Pigs, Lehigh Valley Zoo, PuttU, Applebee's/The Rose Group, Crayola Experience, Nacci Printing, Pies On, and Thrivent. I also want to share a couple of thoughts. First of all, 30 Holy Trinity members and 49 friends and commu-nity individuals attended the Junior Basket Raffle to raise $1472 to continue our support of the youth group's South African "sister", Linathi. Second, I would like to share part of a note I received from one of our members regarding the youth group's support of World Vision's work, by sponsoring a child as well as participating each year in the 30Hour Famine: I don't know how long World Vision has been around - but it was not on my radar screen when I grew up. What a great way to help today's youth (& their parents) look beyond themselves and into the world com-munity. Keep your ears open for updates as the Faith Development Team plans for the fall. Input from both parents and youth, as well as the congregation in general, is welcome as we pray and plan to meet the needs of our congregation and our Catasauqua community.
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans
to give you hope and a future." (Jer. 29:11)
Partnering-
We are partnering with YMCA again this summer for kids’ lunch program. If you can help serve any
day Monday-Friday from 11:10-11:40, please call the office and give dates available. One catch,
background checks required. Visit nepasynod.org to find the forms under background checks
tab. Or, call office and we can help you apply for them. Volunteers are free. Had conversations
with Haven House about future partnering ideas. We paused Coffee with a Cop.
Praising-
3 services available on Sunday mornings but back to old schedule: 8, 9, 10:30 with reduced liturgy
strictions on worship for July.
pledged over $140,000.
Property should be done with major renovations by summer end.
Trinity Morning Glories
We are a daytime women’s group here at Holy Trinity. Our focus is on the spiritual and ser-vice to others. Along the way, we share food, work, laugh, chat and pray together! Please join us!
Note: Our meetings will always be the 3rd
Monday at 10:00 (exception: Dec. will be the 2
nd Monday).
On Monday, June 21, 2021, 25 women met using social distancing in the Alice Storch Room. Again keeping on the safe side, each woman brought water to drink and wore masks (if uncomfortable); no food was served. We welcomed 2 new Morning Glories: Elaine Sales and Catherine Mrowka.
Sandy Svitana’s devotions centered on the famous “Footprints in the Sand” poem. Sandy spoke of her own personal experiences when she knows without a doubt God carried her and answered her prayers. She spoke of God than “putting her down” to continue on with her life. Sandy then read a poem that she wrote entitled “His Footprints”. A copy of the program is attached to this email.
Thank you to Sue Marakovits for playing our “Good Morning” song.
Nancy Petiet from The Cancer Support Center of the Greater Lehigh Valley spoke about how they provide professional programs of emotional support, education and support for people affected by cancer at no charge so that no one faces cancer along. Karen Klubertanz, also from The Cancer Support Cen-ter then led us in a very informative half hour of chair yoga to help us all learn to be centered and become aware of our bodies and how to control our stress.
Collected for Trinity’s Community Summertime Lunch Program: 312 bottles of water and 519 bags of snacks (pretzels, popcorn or baked potato chips).
Thanks to Thrivent, Christy Alvord hosted another fleece blanket tying morning on June 14th from 11 to
1. This time she had children-oriented fabric; the 10 blankets will be going to “The Fund to Benefit Chil-dren and Youth”.
Due to COVID-19, Cheryl Kneiss signed in each woman in our Sign In book and no greeting cards for our shut-ins were hand-signed. Karen Frankenfield got the cards ready for mailing; at the end of the meeting the cards were distributed to be mailed.
Ongoing Projects: BREM Rebra program (Ruthann Reinsmith): Nothing to report. Turning Point (Linda Wiland): A thank-you note was read. Place used cell phones only in the box in church; you can recycle any cords at Staples. On Hold: Morning Glories Bulletin Board in Alice Storch Room.
Frances Kleppinger’s family has asked if the Morning Glories would be able to help out with Frances while the family goes on vacation from August 20 thru August 28. This would mean stopping over at 9:30 to prepare breakfast and at 6:00 with dinner. Sue Marakovits and Janis Charvala will meet with Frances’s daughter to discuss the details further. So far, Linda Wiland, Janis Charvala, Marge Kovacs and Christy Alvord have expressed an interest in helping.
Cay Galgon Baby Bottle Campaign: Our campaign which included Trinity’s congregation was held dur-ing May. $971.50 was collected; 42 bottles were returned
Mystery dinner theater, “Death and Doo Wop” has now been postponed until September 17, 2022. “Without A Cue Productions, LLC” will present the play. Bad Bones BBQ will cater the event.
Instead of the play in 2021, on September 18, Holy Trinity is hosting a Bad Bones BBQ Takeout Dinner. Bad Bones BBQ Menu: Pulled Pork Sandwich, Cole Slaw, Baked Beans, Dessert Only 100 tickets by donation are available. Call Janis, 610 440-0073 to reserve your ticket. Pickup times: 4:30 to 6:00 pm Haven House in Allentown will benefit from the proceeds.
Distribution of offering: 2 - $25 Walmart gift cards for Cay Galgon Family Life Center, $125 in Script cards was given to The Cancer Support Center of the Greater Lehigh Valley and $125 in Script cards was
designated for The Fund to Benefit Children and Youth Trinity Morning Glories (cont’d)
Holy Trinity’s Sixteenth Victorian High Raffle
Thanks to COVID-19, our 15th Annual Victorian Tea was again canceled. We elected instead to still have the Raffle on Friday, June 4, and Saturday, June 5, using COVID-19 guidelines and precautions. The Victorian Tea Team had a great time setting all the raffle items up on Wednesday, June 2. We thank Linda Heiberger for joining us and offering her display expertise. In addition, we thank Pat Fried, John and Sue Marakovits, and Jerry Charvala for delivering the baskets which the Tea Team had assembled in Char-vala’s basement earlier in April. Thanks to Lois McAllister for using her photography skills to capture a rec-ord of our raffle. In the thanks, we also include Trinity’s Publicity Team: Mary Ann Gibbons, Barb Roth, Jessica Kroope, Sherry Creyer, Robin McCloud, Kerilyn Burrows, Danielle Coffin, Luther Itterly, Diane Czar and Joe Schwindenhammer. Thanks to our setup/tear down team: Jerry Charvala, Luther Itterly, Bob Con-nelly, Pastor Brian, Eric Svitana and Ed Hartranft.
All the raffle items were grouped by category to make choosing where to put tickets easier. The gift certifi-cate cans were scattered throughout each category to prevent a backlog of people in the normal gift certifi-cate area.
Entrance was through the church’s portico door on 4th St. As each person was welcomed, they were given a listing by category of all the raffle items and the sponsors of the gift cards. They then proceeded to a tray table that had an index card on which they wrote their name and phone number. Each person was told to keep the pen that they used. They took the card to the ticket seller who transferred their info to master tick-et sheets. The tray tables were wiped down after each person. Exit was through the Pine St. door in the hallway.
The following sponsors, who were not from Trinity, generously supplied gift certificates, monetary dona-tions or products for our raffle. The sponsors included Allentown Fairgrounds Farmers Market, Applebee’s, Becky’s Drive-In, Big Lots, Blocker’s Coffee House, Carvel Bethlehem, Cathy’s Catering, Catty Corner, Crazy Cone Soft Ice Cream, Daku’s Auto Body, Devolutions, Filbert Bed & Breakfast, Giant Markets, Ice Cream World, Jersey Mike’s Sub, Jordan Bowl, King Kone, Lehigh Valley Garden Center, Mario’s Pizza, Meera Sa-lon & Spa, Miller Supply-ACE Hardware, Morgan’s, Nacci Printing, Northampton Seafood Market, Pie’s On Pizzeria, Sam’s Club, Samuel Owens, Styles by Alison, Tanczos Beverages, Thompson’s Meat Market, The Udder Bar, Tommy Burke Provisions, Violet’s Closet, Wegman’s , Weil’s Antique Center, Weis Markets, Woodstone Country Club, Connie Davis, Peggy Kindt, Gerry Zirinsky, Ann Marie Charvala, Chrissy Weaver, Megeen Charvala, Elaine Scott, Jackie Simone, Dennis Beck, Kathy Nattress and Christine Eberhart.
We extend a very special thank you to Trinity’s members who contributed gift certificates, unique items and baskets. As always, the Tea Team received many compliments on the size and quality of the offerings and the set up especially in this COVID-19 time. The final total which will go to the Bright Hope Pregnan-cy Support Centers is $4,370. Over the last 16 years, we have raised $53,563.
Victorian Tea/Raffle Team: Cheryl Kneiss, Barb Fister, Sue Marakovits, Diane Jones, BJ Kunkel, Ruthann Reinsmith, Sandy Svitana, Carol Cunningham, Vicki Chimics, Judy Connelly, Janis Charvala, Carol Hartranft, Nancy Miller, Rena Bond.
Neighbor Support Fund Before I started to write this article, I looked back at what I had written one year ago. It included phrases like "as our reality in dealing with COVID19 evolves and we carefully start to create a new 'normal' "... "preparing and distributing meals, writing thank you notes to heroes on the front line"..."creating 'make-your-own-greeting-card' kits for inclusion in Blondie's 'Sunshine Bags' for local kids"..."someday, hopefully a bell will ring out to call the community out of their homes to join us for events"..."to use Pastor Brian's description of the immense inpouring of financial love: 'ridiculous!' "..."As we begin to slowly, carefully, 'reopen' Holy Trinity's worship services, let's remember that, whether empty or limited or full, 'The church has been de-ployed.' " It makes me smile to look back on those words. Some of the things are like distant memories...others are dreams that have come true - like the ringing of the bell in our bell tower. And the church continues to be deployed. Our next free community lunches will be July 31st and August 28th. Indoor seating will be offered, adding to the community spirit of the lunches. We hope that members of Holy Trinity will come out to enjoy a "home-cooked meal" and to share smiles and conversation with our Catasauqua neighbors. Coffee with a Cop remains on hold. Lunches for the Catty and North Catty summer programs started in mid-June. If you'd like to be part of this light-hearted ministry, either helping to make lunches in Holy Trinity's kitchen, or handing out the lunches at one of the programs, talk to Pastor Brian. There's a calendar on the refrigerator where you can jot down your availability, whether occasionally, or one day a week, or more often. (Note: it takes less than an hour at the playground, but you need clearances - they're free, and Robin can assist you with those.) Enjoy your summer! And come out to your church home on a weekday or the last Saturday of each month to share in some fun and service with other members of your church family. I hope you'll make Holy Trinity your summer "home away from home"!
Dear Church family,
Thank you for the Cross! Thank you for helping me grow
through the years into who I am today.
I’m thankful for my Church family.
Love, Brianna Walker
