RPTC’s Adult USTA tournament

was a great success, with the

largest draw ever! A total of 56

players entered, with well over

300 entrants. Players came from

all over California, as well as

Hawaii, Arizona, New York and

Tennessee. Spectators enjoyed lots

of great tennis! Almost $,000 in

prize money was awarded to Open

Division players and RPTC made a

tidy profit to go towards getting our

new courts built.

The Men’s Open Singles division

was especially well attended with

a draw of 49 players, including

Poway High School star Dylan

Trent and top college players from

UCSD, including just graduated

number one Kazumi Negishi. In the

Women’s Open Singles division,

the number one player from

SDSU, Julia Trunk won the day.

As the awards were presented, the

recipients were delighted with the

crystal trophies that were awarded

RPTC’s Adult USTA Tournament a Winner!

and you could not wipe the smiles

off of the faces of the Open winners

and finalists when they received

their prize checks.

Congratulations to our RPTC

members who won or made it to

the finals in their divisions! RPTC

was well represented with hard

fought matches.

A very special thank you to all

the volunteers who helped us:

Mie Sammons, Judy Grear, Mae

Alonsagay, Doreen Krone, Diane

McCreary, Carole Westcott, Thanh

Huyen (and daughter!) and Dana

Gibson.

This was truly a team effort and we

couldn’t have pulled it off without

the amazing Maria Webster and her

awesome staff. Maria put in many

hours working with the Committee

and providing vital support. It

would take several pages to list all

the things she took care of for us.

She is a jewel! Thank you, Maria!

All players received a beautiful

velour towel with RPTC’s insignia.

We are selling the remaining towels

for $.00 each. You can purchase

them in the office while supplies

last.

Be sure to check out RPTC’s

website for a list and photos of

winners and finalists from our club!

Until next year,

RPTC USTA TOURNAMENT

COMMITTEE

Julie Maiorano, Carol Donahue,

Mike Kelley and Barbara Kingston

Lob Letter September/October 2010

Q:Is it legal to have two vibration dampeners in your racquet one at the bottom and one at the top?

A:Yes as long as each is placed outside the pattern of crossed strings, i.e. below the top or bottom string or outside the right or left side strings. Having two (or more) vibration dampeners does not break the rules.

ITF Rules of Tennis #4 The Racquet, case 3:

Can vibration-damping devices be placed on the strings of a racquet? If so where can they be placed?

Yes, but they must be placed outside the pattern of the crossed strings.

Q:While playing doubles our opponents hit a return that was a sitter, just as my partner was about to crush it a ball rolled onto the court behind the opponents they stopped playing and my partner put the ball away by hitting it to the side of the court away from where the errant ball was.

The opponent stated that a let should be played. We said that the last shot he hit was a duck and that we would have won the point anyway. They said that once a player stops playing due to a distraction, you have to play the point over. We played it over, but we still think we had won the point. Please help.

A:Dear Duck crusher,

You are correct, as described you won the point. The Code Item 35 states

“A let is not automatically granted because of hindrance. A let is authorized only if the player could have made the shot had the player not been hindered”

As you describe the point the opponents were out of it by the time the ball rolled onto the court and the outcome was in no way affected. The point was yours.

Carol Donahue was victorious in the Women’s 4.0 bracket of the

Maureen Connolly Brinker Memorial Tournament. She came from behind,

having lost the first set, but settled down, played solid tennis and

took the nd and 3rd set to defeat the #4 seed, Elle France, in the

final. On Friday she had a straight set victory over the # seed,

Coach Solomn Liu and his team won SoCal Sectionals for Jr. Teamtennis back in June. My son, Robert is on the team.

BRAG BOARD

Dana Gibson was a finalist in the Men’s 4.0 bracket, which is pretty cool, too.
