Sens. Hutchison, Cornyn Invite President To Tour Fire-Damaged Regions During Upcoming Visit to Texas
WASHINGTON— U.S. Sens. Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn, R-Texas, today sent the following letter to President BarackObama inviting him to tour areas of Texas devastated by wildfires during his upcoming visit to the state. The White House has announcedthe President will visit Texas next week for a fundraising event in Austin and an event related to immigration in El Paso. The Senatorshope President Obama will accept their invitation to see the fire damage firsthand and reconsider his recent denial of the State’s requestfor a federal disaster declaration.
Sens. Hutchison and Cornyn wrote, “We are hopeful that after seeing this devastation firsthand, you will reconsider your recentdenial and provide the State and localities with the vital resources and funding required to fully support their work.”

The President
The White HouseWashington, D.C. 20500
Dear President Obama:
We are writing to invite you to tour areas of Texas recently devastated by wildfires during your announced visit to the State next week.
We have written to you and your Administration on numerous occasions regarding our constituents and their struggle to combat andcontrol the wildfires that have engulfed large portions of Texas. The importance of issuing a federal disaster declaration at the state ofTexas’ request in order to reduce the burden these wildfires have imposed on our constituents and communities cannot be overstated.
We were disappointed to learn that your Administration denied the State’s request for federal assistance considering that over 7,000individual wildfires have burned more than 2.2 million acres this year alone. This has resulted in the destruction of homes, businesses, farms and ranches, and the death of two brave firefighters.
Therefore, we invite you to tour fire-stricken areas and meet with the brave firefighters and other personnel working to stop the advanceof the wildfires and save lives. We believe that a tour will reinforce the severity of the damage and threat that the wildfires pose to ourState and constituents. We are hopeful that after seeing this devastation firsthand, you will reconsider your recent denial and provide theState and localities with the vital resources and funding required to fully support their work.
Thank you in advance for your consideration of this request. We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
KAY BAILEY HUTCHISON JOHN CORNYN

TxDOT Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary of the Click It or TicketCampaign
Researchers Estimate Safety Belts Have Saved 2,843 Lives in Texas in the LastDecade
The Texas Department of Transportation’s 10th annual Click It or Ticket spring campaign kicks offthis week with good news—Texans are buckling up more than ever, and thousands have been “savedby the belt.” Before the Click It or Ticket campaign began in Texas in 2002, only 76.1 percent of thestate’s population was buckling up. Thanks to a decade of increased enforcement and an extensivepublic education campaign about the life-saving benefits of seat belts, Texans are using seat belts inrecord numbers. According to the Texas Transportation Institute, 93.84 percent of drivers andpassengers now buckle up. Experts at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)estimate that this increase over the past 10 years has resulted in 2,843 fewer traffic fatalities, 48,000fewer serious injuries, and a savings to the state of more than $10 billion in associated costs. “We’reextremely proud of what Texas has been able to accomplish over the past 10 years, and we’re gratefulto law enforcement, safety advocates, and drivers and passengers everywhere for making it happen,”said Carol Rawson, TxDOT’s Traffic Operations Division Director. “But we can’t quit now—we wantthis trend to continue.” Despite an overall downward trend in fatalities between 2003 and 2009, trafficcrashes remain the leading cause of death for those between one and 44 years of age in Texas. In 2009in Texas, more than 3,000 people died in fatal collisions on Texas streets and highways, and justunder half were not buckled up. Wearing a seat belt reduces the risk of fatal injury by 45 percent, andin pickups, that number increases to 60 percent, due to the fact that pickup trucks are more likely toroll over in a crash than passenger cars. To ensure that Texans continue complying with seat beltlaws, thousands of state troopers will join police officers and sheriffs’ deputies statewide betweenMay 23 and June 5, including the Memorial Day holiday weekend, to ticket drivers and passengerswho aren’t buckled up. “Click It or Ticket is about saving lives, because we know that when a personbuckles up, their chances of surviving a crash are far better. We prefer voluntary compliance with thelaw, but we will write tickets if necessary,” said Major Ron Joy of the Texas Department of PublicSafety. Fines for failing to fasten your seat belt can add up to $250, plus court costs. It’s not justdrivers that must buckle up—state law also requires passengers in the front and back seat to buckleup.
