It is importantthat we all take the necessary steps toprotect our families, particularly ourchildren and those at higher risk, fromthe spread of flu. Taking precautionarysteps can play an important role in

preventing an individual from catchingthe flu.

Many will remember that lastseason H1N1 represented the firstinfluenza outbreak in over 40years. With this said, doctors are notexpecting an occurrence like we sawlast year, but they are still encouragingindividuals to receive flu shots,especially those who are at a higher risklike young children and the elderly.

The Texas Department of

State Health Services (DSHS)encourages everyone over 6 months oldto get a seasonal flu shot as soon aspossible. “There’s no reason to wait.The supply is here,” said Dr. DavidLakey, DSHS commissioner. “Weusually see an increase in flu cases inlate October or early November. Ittakes the vaccine about two weeks tobecome effective, so get vaccinatednow to protect yourself and yourfamily.” Lakey said this year’sseasonal vaccine also protects againstH1N1 flu. A nasal spray vaccine is anoption for healthy people ages 2 to 49who are not pregnant.

The flu is caused by variousinfluenza viruses. Symptoms includefever, coughing, sore throat, runnynose, achy muscles, chills, extremetiredness or stomach symptoms. Mosthealthy people recover withoutproblems, but people over 65, pregnantwomen, young children and peoplewith chronic health conditions are athigher risk for serious complicationsand even death. It is especiallyimportant for people in those high-riskgroups to be vaccinated.

If you find yourself having any of thecommon flu like symptoms it is best toget to a doctor within 48 hours. If apatient is able to visit the doctor withinthe 48 hour window, antiviral drugs areconsidered more effective in shorteningthe course of the

infection. Practicing healthy habits

such as washing hands and coveringcoughs is hugely important, but so istaking the extra step to vaccinateyo u r s e l f a n d yo u r f a m i l ymembers.
