Carol Adams, Mayoral Candidate: I hope that the future will allow those who come here to enjoy the things we enjoy, the small town feeling, the friendly people. I hope it will be a beautiful and safe home for lots of families who love it. Fabol Hughes, Mayoral Candidate: In 10 years one will not recognize the City of Katy. We do not look like every other small town or city in America where they all look alike. Our rice dryers, railroad, depot, caboose, small shops, stores and boutiques give our city its unique identity. We must protect our heritage and culture at all costs. We have to manage in such a way that this unique identity is not compromised, guarding against change that would seek to destroy it. TKN: Do you have specific plans that would manage the Katy growth? James C. Mendez, Jr., City Council Ward B: I grew up here. My wife and I played with the kids that the streets are named after. We swam in the rice wells. My kids are playing with those kids’ kids now. I am linked with Katy and I would be good for managing the growth because I remember what it was like and I remember what I love about this city. I want it to grow big, but I want that hometown feel. Specific plans? Not at this time. I know that whatever I do will be in the best interest of Katy. Betsy Proctor, City Council Ward B: The Texas Downtown Historical Association Committee came into to town as outsiders and gave us a lot of ideas. They said we need all of the things that I just mentioned. I think that the city needs to continue working with this association. TKN : What have you done personally to benefit the city? Chuck Brawner, City Council Ward A: In the early 80’s, I had a lot of experience as a police officer and (with) K9’s. Chief Adams and Billy Johnson commissioned me as a peace officer. I rode patrol out here with Buddy Frazier. Back in the 70’s, Principal O’Mally at Katy High School said that they had a drug problem. I came out here with my dog and we cleaned house. I was a fire captain with West I-10. I have also been active in my neighborhood HOA. Sandra Byrd, City Council Ward A: I served several years on the Katy ISD Livestock Show and Rodeo as well as serving as secretary on the Katy Heritage Park Board. I volunteered in the Harris County Juvenile Detention Center, bringing the Bridges to Life program to the residents. Leap Into Service with Local CharitiesMost of us think of

master-planned communi-ties, award-winning schools, and wealth when thinking about Katy, Texas. Not many of us are aware of the low-income or no-income dire needs of children and families in our community. Does this make your heart hurt? Do you have a passion to help? There are many opportunities for you to make a difference in the lives of people right here in our community. Leap into Service, offered by Compassion Katy, brings local charities together to show the need and how you can help.

Leap into Service’s an annual breakfast will be held on April 17th, at 7:30 a.m. at The Fellowship of Cinco Ranch, 22765 Westheimer Parkway, and will showcase over 30 Katy-area non-profit organizations. You will have the opportunity to hear about the mission,

vision, and heart of each organization as well as learn about the diverse needs of our community and ways you can help. Our guest speaker will be Jim McIngvale, owner of Gallery Furniture, who has a heart for helping meet needs in our greater community.

Leap into Service is free, but registration is required. Seating is limited, so register early. The event is sponsored by Compassion Katy, Katy YMCA, and Katy Chick-Fil-A. Register at http://compassionkaty.volunteerhub.com/Events/Index. You can read more about Leap Into Service by visiting our website at www.compassionkaty.org/leap-into-service.

The 9th/10th Grade Katy Rebels-D'Addieco team took 1st place in the March 23-24 VYPE Bracket Buster tournament in The Woodlands, TX. The team went 3-0 and won the championship in convincing fashion in their first tournament of the season! Hustle and intensity proved to be the difference in each game where the Rebels team made up for some early season rust and jitters by consistently battling for rebounds and loose balls to secure critical possessions against solid opposition. On defense, an aggressive man-to-man stifled the opponents' top players and kept the games under control. On offense, their commitment to team basketball and a system built around constant ball movement was evident in the record number of assists per field goal in the last two games. This year's team has high expectations for the AAU season after returning a very solid and improved core from last year and adding some exciting new players in the offseason. Congratulations to Allison, LaShanda, Kim, Sydney, Natalia, Kayla, Anna, Delaney, Myangiel, and Emily on a very successful start to the season!

“No Label opened for business about the same time we moved our race shop from Houston to Katy two years ago,” says No. 00 No Label Ford Fusion NASCAR driver Kristin Bumbera. “Many suggested that we team up, and we finally made it happen. We’re going to work hard to increase sales for their popular craft beers. We’ve got a winning combination here.” Kristin’s racing history is available at www.kristinbumbera.com.

The Katy News is pleased to introduce readers to local candidates for public office. Chuck Brawner seeks the Ward A seat on the Katy City Council. Over the last 26 years he and wife Marcy raised their family in the Katy area. Two of their three children graduated from Katy High, and two are raising Brawner’s grandchildren in Katy.

Brawner is a former West I-10 Volunteer Fire Department Captain. As the current Chief of Police for Spring Branch ISD, he oversees a $3.5 million budget for 50 campuses and brings over 40 years of emergency management and disaster

By Melanie Saxton response to the council. Conservative spending principals, public safety, preserving Katy’s heritage and managing city growth are his priorities.

“We have a great police force and dedicated fireman, but have only two years to address the threat to our ISO rating, which affects premiums paid by home-owners and businesses,” he says. “My background in allocating tax dollars can help the council work through funding decisions as we solve understaffing and build additional fire stations.”

Appointed by Governor Perry to represent Texas on the Federal Juvenile Justice Advisory Board, he met

people from all 50 states. “Connecting on that level made me realize we don’t always need to reinvent wheel,” adds Brawner, who is known to collaborate with other leaders when problem-solving. He faces Sandra Byrd in the May 11 election. Early voting begins April 29th.

James C. Mendez, Jr. has filed to run for the Ward B Katy City Council seat. Jimmy has been a resident of Katy since 1972 where he and his wife Darlene Ruley have raised two children and enjoyed watching them go to the same schools and churches and play with the children of friends they grew up with. While being politically minded, Mendez does not consider himself a “career politician.” “I have been blogging for years about federal and state political issues and I should put my where my mouth is and serve my local community.”

Mendez, currently second in command of security for Memorial Hermann Katy, worked the disaster sites for Hurricanes Ike and Rita. He is trained in emergency search and rescue by the

Civil Air Patrol and has earned numerous FEMA e m e r g e n c y / d i s a s t e r certifications. Since 911 he has been taking anti-terrorism courses instructed by experts from Israel, Ireland, Pakistan, India, INTERPOL and Scotland Yard.

“I think the quality that I will bring to the city council is my ‘good ol’ fashioned upbringing’. I am God-fearing, I stand up for my beliefs, I accept the consequences of my actions, I treat everyone as I want to be treated, I have an incredible work ethic and I love my hometown.”

For years friends and neighbors have suggested to Mendez that he run for public office and he feels that now is the time. Mendez feels that the infrastructure and drainage issues need to be addressed sooner rather than later and that the

city is over-regulated and therefore stifling business growth and development within the city limits. Katy is one of the fastest growing regions in the nation, but our infrastructure has not grown at the same pace. “I am all for revitalizing the downtown area and creating tourism for our wonderful city and hope to keep the small town feeling that our families grew up with. My goal is to manage growth by representing the residents’ desires.”

Mendez Declares Cadidacy for Katy City Council Ward B Position

A Few Words From Our Customers

Katy Sports

The Seven Lakes boys’ soccer team has been among the best in Region III all season.

But the Spartans have lacked something special since Feb. 26.

On Friday, sophomore midfielder Thomas Barboza returned for the first time in six weeks with an intensity that lit up Rhodes Stadium during the 5A area playoff match against a talented Jersey Village team.

Seven Lakes defeated Jersey Village 3-2 on a three goals by the energetic Barboza, including the game winner with 1:40 left in regulation.

Down 1-0 at the intermission, the Spartans (20-1-4) unleashed a hungry Barboza. And the swift midfielder stole the spotlight with a hat trick of three second-half goals to push Seven Lakes into a regional quarterfinal match against Langham Creek on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Pridgeon Stadium.

Barboza delighted the home crowd with his open field dribbling through multiple Falcon defenders. His final two goals were only possible after precision free kicks from Spartan senior Victor Belandria.

“The last goal was one of the best goals of my life. (Jersey Village) has really good players. But our team plays hard, and Victor’s crosses to me were huge. The second goal I had to hit with my right foot, which is tougher for me,” Barboza said. “I don’t care if I score or not. I just want our team to go to state.”

Barboza nearly registered five goals in the half with two near misses, including one that left him cringing on his knees in front of the Falcon goal.

For most of the second half, Barboza was pure magic on the field.

As a midfielder, he is not the tallest player, but he excels at dribbling over, under and through opponents. His quickness and speed give him ample opportunities to score.

On this night, Jersey Village defenders and the goalkeeper had few answers for this inspired performance.

Seven Lakes boys’ soccer head coach Jimmy Krueger, a 2002 Katy graduate, said the first half of the match did not go well for the Spartans, and they needed a spark.

“Jersey Village came out fired up and made it hard for us to play our game,” Krueger said. “We just had to calm down and play the way we know how. This was an exciting game, and Thomas Barboza’s hat trick made the difference.”

According to Krueger, Barboza was the District 19-5A leading scorer until he was sidelined on Feb. 26 for grades. He still finished in the top three among district scorers despite missing all of district play in March.

The Taylor girls rolled to a 5-1 area soccer playoff victory over Cy Woods on Friday, powered by a 4-goal outburst by senior forward Haley Silverberg.

District 19-5A champion Cinco Ranch posted a 3-0 win against at Cy Creek. Lady Cougars Maddie Nichols, Kelly Thomson and Juliana Echevery each scored in the shutout.

The Lady Cougars (20-1-2) played unbeaten Cy-Fair (19-0-2) Tuesday night in a ranked battle while the Taylor girls (20-3-2) matched up against district rival Memorial (11-9-4) the same night in what may be the easier path through the regional tournament.

“Being away from (preseason regional favorites) Cinco and Clements is good news for us. They are the two best teams I’ve seen. The other side (of the Region III playoff bracket) is harder to predict,” Taylor head soccer coach Mark Kluppel said Monday.”

Cinco Ranch may have the more rugged route to the Region III final on Saturday at Abshirer Stadium in Deer Park. However both 19-5A powers have a good chance of reaching the rematch.

Cinco Ranch head soccer coach Fredy Sanguinetti said the Lady Cougars’ quarterfinal match would be decided in the midfield against Cy-Fair.

And he was correct as the Cinco Ranch girls took a 2-0 lead on goals by Megan Hill and Kelly Thomson. They won 2-1.

Taylor beat Memorial 2-1 on Tuesday with goals from Emery Steinberg and Mary Heiberger.

Taylor, Cinco Ranch, Clear Springs and Clear Falls will advance to the 5A-Region III semifinals in Deer Park on Friday.

The semifinal victors will play Saturday for a chance to earn a state invitation.

On Tuesday night, the three Katy ISD soccer teams remaining in the postseason played knowing the winners would advance to the Region III semifinals on Friday at Deer Park’s Abshier Stadium.

With their seasons hanging in the balance, all three advanced after hard-fought victories over talented and worthy opponents.

Regional semifinal winners advance to Saturday’s Region III final, and regional champions will play at state.

Fans of Sam Raimi’s seminal “Evil Dead” movies from the ’80s have to be amused that anyone would remake “Evil Dead,” not least because “Evil Dead 2” was more a reprise of the super-low-budget original than a bona fide sequel. In the 25 years since the second “Evil Dead,” leading jawline Bruce Campbell went onto bigger if not better things. So did Raimi. The director who scrounged to gin up a few hundred grand for his 1981 deep-woods supernatural slasher eventually got the keys to the Spider-Man films of the 2000s (total worldwide gross: around $2.5 billion). In that way, he’s not unlike Peter Jackson rising from the B-horror likes of “Dead Alive” to direct the “Lord of the Rings” empire. Campy, dinky horror pics can be kingmakers nonpareil.

Funny thing about horror, though. More than any other genre, quality horror resists big budgets. (John Carpenter arguably never made anything scarier than “Halloween,” even after that low-budget classic won him the right to spend freely.) The most frightening things in life are inherently rough-hewn and primitive, often making it damn hard to buy a scare.

Happily this “Evil Dead” cost a relatively paltry $14 million. That turns out to be enough to break away from its camp potential, alas, but what you get instead is a disturbing demon-themed dismemberment spectacle inflicted upon a cast of five unknowns. None of them has the charisma of Campbell, alas, and this “Evil Dead” skates by on just a threadbare backstory. But when you’re going into slow-mo conniptions in your seat, squinting and squirming in hard-cussing flinch-a-minute ecstasy, the lack of exposition won’t uncurl your toes.

The setup seems so formulaic by now that the spoofy “The Cabin in the Woods” could be so named. Nonetheless: “Evil Dead” returns us to, yes, a cabin in the woods, where two young men and two young women have gathered, in an asexual twist, to help another young lady, Mia (Jane Levy), follow through on her vow to kick a persistent junk habit. Her brother’s there, the Abercrombie-esque David (Shiloh Fernandez), plus his mostly pointless girlfriend Natalie (Elizabeth Blackmore) and a nurse friend Olivia (Jessica Lucas).

Upon arriving, Mia picks up the scent of something

dead in the house. Everyone writes this off as dope sickness until their dog sniffs out a trap door that leads to a basement ornamented with dead cats hanging from strings. There’s also a book down there, shrouded in plastic and swaddled in barbed wire. The too-curious-for-his-own-good friend, Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci), decides to clip his way in with wire cutters and, as he browses this gruesome volume bound in human flesh, mutters some very ominous incantations he finds inside. An audience accustomed to yelling “don’t go in there!” to characters on-screen will find themselves calling out, “stop reading!”

Of course he stupidly continues, summoning very bad things. He then has numerous opportunities to rue this decision, as when his variously demonically possessed friends repeatedly stab his face with a hypodermic needle, and riddle him with tenpennies fired from a nail gun, and bludgeon him with a blunt metal mattock, and perforate his guts with a utility knife, and shiv him with slab of busted mirror — it goes on like this, really. And this is just Eric, one of only two characters who doesn’t deliberately dismember himself in any fashion.

Honestly, it’s exhausting. Diablo Cody, of “Juno,” wrote the screenplay along with newbie director Fede Alvarez, and it clicks along smoothly in a near-sprint for 90 minutes. Fan girls and boys should sit through the credits. Everyone else will stagger out into the daylight with these morals resonating: never try to quit drugs, and never, ever read anything from a book.

Evil Dead is Low Budget, Seat Sqirming, B-Horror Flick

The popular pint-sized, pin-striped classic leaps off the silver screen and onto the stage with a slapstick musical comedy production. The story follows the rivalry between two half-witted street gangs and the washed up, well-intentioned, one-time boxer who steps in to take control of Fat Sam’s gang and give Dandy Dan and his boys what they’ve

got coming. In this film noir spoof, the message is one of good, clean fun; the characters are wonderful 1920's cartoon cutouts; and the wild and wacky musical culminates in a classic pie fight fought with "splurge blasters" which spew forth "silly string" instead of pies!

Seven Lakes is hoping Tuesday’s rematch with Langham Creek, ranked No. 16 in a national poll, will yield the same result as in 2012 when the Spartans shut down the Lobos’ talented

Arbor Day Foundation Names Katy Tree City USA

Katy, Texas was named a 2012 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. This is the 2nd year Katy has earned the national recognition.

Katy achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, and annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.

“Everyone benefits when elected officials, volunteers and committee citizens in communities like Katy make smart investments in urban forests,” said John Rosenow, founder and chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Trees bring shade to our homes and beauty to our neighborhoods, along with numerous economic, social and environmental benefits.”

Cleaner air, improved storm water management, energy savings and increased property values and commercial activity are among the benefits enjoyed by Tree City USA communities.

More information on the program is available at www.arborday.org/TreeCityUSA.
