Scott Cooper, M.D., received the Distinguished George E. “Ned” Burket, M.D., Family Medicine Award as the outstanding fourth-year medical student in family medicine. Natalie Hagman, M.D., received the KAFP-Foundation Hostetter Award for the Wichita campus for exemplifying the values of family medicine. Alex Johnson, M.D., received the Megan K. Foster, M.D., Student Jayhawker Award. Ryan Sorell, M.D., received the ODI Personal Perseverance Award. Brandon Stucky, M.D., received the P.G. Czarlinsky Family Award; The Willard J. Smith, M.D., Award for Academic Achievement; The Conrad Osborne, M.D., Family and Community Medicine Award, as the outstanding third-year medical student in family medicine; and the Merck Manual Award. He also was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Rachel Allen, M.D.; Scott Cooper, M.D.; and Tyler Darland, M.D., were recognized as members of the Gold Humanism Honor Society. Roger Klein, M.D., Wesley, and Isaac Johnston, M.D., Via Christi, received the 2017 Apple Award for teaching medical students at their respective residency programs. This makes the third consecutive year that Dr. Klein and Dr. Johnston have received the award, the first residents to ever receive the award three consecutive years. Gary Brooking, Ph.D., was awarded the Wichita State University Dwane and Velma Wallace 2017 Faculty Service Award for his work developing an interprofessional relationship between the bioengineering students at WSU and the KUSM-W family medicine residency programs at Wesley and Via Christi. Nancy Davis, Ph.D., has been appointed to the board of directors of the American Board of Medical Specialties Maintenance of Certification Portfolio Program. Samuel Ofei-Dodoo, Ph.D., MPA, M.A., received a KUMC travel award to present his research at the North American Primary Care Research Group Conference, Nov. 17-21, 2017, in Montreal, Canada. Chantel Long, M.D., Smoky Hill, received the Exemplary Teaching Award in the full-time faculty category at the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians annual meeting, Wichita, Kansas, June 9. Robert Freelove, M.D., Smoky Hill, received the Humanitarian Award at the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians annual meeting, Wichita, Kansas, June 9. Brandon Cole, D.O., Via Christi, was recognized as the Carol A. Johnson, M.D., Family Medicine International Mission Scholarship recipient at the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians annual meeting, Wichita, Kansas, June 9. Dr. Cole utilized the scholarship to study in Egypt. Gina Berg, Ph.D., MBA, has been promoted to research associate professor. Nancy Davis, Ph.D., has been promoted to professor. Tracy Williams, M.D., Via Christi, has been promoted to associate professor. Sheryl Beard, M.D., Via Christi, has been named the Guadalupe Clinic associate medical director. Michael Heiland, M.D., and Isaac Johnston, M.D., Via Christi; and Caitlin Chiles, M.D., and Emily O’Dell, D.O., Wesley, completed the 2017 KUSM-W Residents as Teachers course. (Continued on page 3.)

LISA GILBERT, M.D. Dr. Gilbert is a new full-time faculty member at the Via Christi Family Medicine Residency Program, coming on board in May as a clinical assistant professor. She graduated magna cum laude from Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science degree after completing double majors in Cell and Molecular Biology and French. She attended the University Of Texas Southwestern Medical School and completed her residency in family medicine at Via Christi. She completed the Via Christi International Family Medicine Fellowship, serving for five months at a mission hospital in Niger, West Africa. For the last three years, Dr. Gilbert practiced family medicine, including obstetrics and emergency medicine, at Kearny County Hospital in rural southwest Kansas. She also spent one to two days per week at a federally qualified health center for underserved patients in Garden City, caring for refugees and immigrants. Interspersed with this, she participated with the Ebola Response Team with Partners in Health in Liberia for several months and has continued her volunteer work in rural hospitals in Niger and Cameroon. She has training from the Pope Paul VI Institute as a medical consultant for the FertilityCare™ model of natural family planning. She also completed the coursework and certificate exam in Clinical Tropical Medicine and Traveler’s Health from the American Academy of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. Passionate about improving rural and international health care, Dr. Gilbert has interests in women’s and children’s health care, social determinants of health, health equity, and the field of bioethics. DEVIN PENNY, D.O., AND MELISSA PENNY, D.O. Drs. Melissa and Devin Penny have joined the Via Christi Family Medicine Residency faculty. The Pennys graduated from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed residency at Via Christi, class of 2010. After residency, Dr. Melissa served on active duty in the Air Force at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida while Dr. Devin was able to teach alongside her at the on-base residency clinic as a civilian contractor. Dr. Melissa served in Kuwait for six months. Since their return to Wichita two years ago, the Pennys have shared a position at GraceMed and with a local hospitalist group. Now the Pennys are sharing a teaching position within the Via Christ FMR. They have five children, Jadediah, Eden, Treyson, Justice, and Grace.
