Dear Friends,

We are having an amazing summer here at St. Andrew’s. The Vacation Bible School sounds of

63 children and 33 volunteers filled the halls each morning this past week. What a joy and blessing! These sounds were followed by the somewhat quieter teen Mission Friends each afternoon. The Mission Friends did good work with a wonderful spirit. More blessings! All of this will all be followed by the Choir Camp making joyful noises to the Lord.

These robust programs, together with the opportunities to continue to get to know each of you and the ministries you engage in both here and in our community, are a blessing to me. I feel truly hopeful for the future not only of St. Andrew’s but also of our Episcopal Church.

To add to this sense of hopefulness, we are anticipating the baptism of 7 of our children in the weeks ahead. What a blessing! The sacrament of baptism is the opportunity for each of us to renew our commitment to Jesus Christ as we join with those being baptized and renew our own baptismal covenant.

Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?

Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself?

Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?

The Baptismal Covenant is always an opportunity to consider our own lives and how we are fulfilling these

promises. This is one of the reasons we make baptism part of our worship when the whole community is gathered. Baptism is our common bond as followers of Jesus Christ. One friend preaching an ordination service a few years ago reminded everyone present that baptism was his or her original ordination for ministry.

Ministry, especially ordained leadership, is on everyone’s mind these days. On August 4th we will commission our Discernment Team. This is a group of dedicated parishioners who represent various groups and ministries in our parish. They will meet together, pray together, discuss ideas about what our future will be and finally recommend a candidate to our Vestry for Priest-in-Charge. Each person in the parish has a role in the ministry of discernment. First of all, your prayers for this process are critical. Remember the Gospel of Luke we heard on the 7th Sunday after Pentecost in which Jesus responded to his disciples request to teach them to pray.

For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. (Luke 11:10)

Your input into this process will be sought. If you have thoughts, desires, hopes for our future please share them with our Vestry, Discernment Committee, and me.

I believe that God guides this process in partnership with each of us and that someone will be called to leadership here who is full of “the Spirit of the Lord”.

Energy here continues to flow into our life and worship. Keep an eye on our web page in particular the calendar so you can find the opportunities to experience your call to ministry.

Thank you for the joy of sharing this part of your journey.

In Christ’s love,

VESTRY NOTES SENIOR WARDEN

MARK FOSTER [email protected]

Perhaps you caught the article by Colman McCarthy, nestled in the “Local Opinions” section of the July 21st Washington Post, about folk singer Joan Baez? McCarthy told a story about a discussion he arranged in 1984 for Baez with a group of students. One student, a sixteen-year-old punk rocker named Dante, told her, “You see, you

guys in the sixties had everything. You had the music, the issues, the symbols, the momentum. You had each other; you had glue. We are missing that. We don’t have any glue.”

The comment both amused and amazed me...and it also made me immediately think about St. Andrew’s. Why? Because, at a time when so much of the world appears to be coming apart at the seams…We still got glue! I see the evidence of it all around—at the annual Shrine Mont parish retreat (yes, another plug!); in the congregation’s response to calls for help with Workcamp, the annual audit, Jess Speaker’s discernment committee, and the Priest-in-Charge discernment team; in the reflections offered by our youth Workcampers upon their return; in the almost-full Preschool registration level; in our collective openness to God’s presence and guidance along our clergy transition journey; and in so many other ways!

You should know that your Vestry is a particularly “sticky” bunch! This group has obviously wrestled with some particularly tough issues this year. We’ve had hard conversations, felt the pressure of time and our own expectations of ourselves to do right by all of you and by God, and yet have maintained an impressive degree of cohesion, mutual support, and unanimity when it matters most. Halfway through our term, I feel continuously inspired by, and blessed to be part of, this team that you have put in place. And I’m looking forward to what’s coming in the next six months!

The preschool remains quiet but not for long. In August, some much needed playground work will be done. The current mulched area will be re-graded to even out the surface, remove the old timbers, fill in the dips and cover the grassy area. This is all being done to get ready for delivery of a new piece of playground equipment and all new mulch. The playground will be “off limits” for a week or so

starting Monday, August 5th.

The teachers return on August 26, 2019 to spend the week preparing for their new students to begin the following week. Back to school night for the preschool is Thursday, August 29th in the Parish Hall and classrooms.

Registration is strong this year and as of this writing, we only have one vacancy, which will probably fill when new families move into the area.

St. Andrew’s Endowment Fund Bob Heyer | [email protected]

Support our endowment fund and supplement your income with a gift annuity. As you consider the many charitable giving options available today, your personal financial needs and interests should be balanced with your charitable giving goals. A charitable gift annuity offers a simple solution for people who wish to make a gift and, in turn, receive ongoing income payments. A gift annuity offers you tax benefits and provides future support to the church’s endowment fund and/or your favorite charities and causes. You can choose to begin payments immediately or defer payments to a specified date in the future.

A gift annuity option should be discussed with your Financial Advisor/Planner as fiduciary. Additional details can be discussed with our Interim Rector, Rosemari, or members of the St. Andrew’s Endowment Board consisting of Bob Heyer Chairman, Andrew Guccione, Lisa Rollo, Hal Hendrick, and Alice Redman.

OUTREACH

It is St. Andrew’s turn once again to help re-stock ECHO’s food pantry. Paper bags and a list of needed non-perishable food and personal care items will be available on August 25th and September 1st with in-

gathering on September 8th. Please remember our neighbors in Burke and Springfield who are in need and who struggle to feed their families every day.

Our food drive is very important to ECHO. Despite generous giving from its member congregations and the larger local community, the demand for food assistance usually outweighs supply. The request for food increases especially during summer month and, as a result, ECHO pantry shelves are very low right now.

Watch for ECHO posters and please remember to take a bag home. Thank you in advance for participating in this important local ministry.

August Break for Saturday Services Julie Morgan & Martha Turner | [email protected]

Saturday Evening Services will take a break this August. We will not have services on August 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, or 31st. Services will resume on September 7th

Transition times provide us the opportunity to look at ourselves as a parish and dream about our future. We decide what is constant and true or what may be reimagined in the ways we experience worship.

Our consultation group consists of Saturday worshippers and worship leaders. Our group will discuss what we love and what might be reimagined in our worship together.

While the St. Andrew’s teens were on pilgrimage in Canterbury, England, members from the Adult Choir, Donna and John Osthaus, Julie Grimes, and Director of Music, Aaron Goen, joined forces with the youth and adult choirs of St. George’s and St. Mary’s, Arlington to serve as the visiting resident choir for Lincoln and Sheffield cathedrals and St. Botolph’s, Boston, UK. Highlights of the trip included visiting Hampton court (Henry VIII’s House), Burghley house (William Cecil’s house) a Lincoln City Tour, and a Sheffield cathedral tour. Our hosts were friendly and gracious. The Precentor at Lincoln Cathedral treated us to a champagne and orange juice (for the kids) reception at her house garden. The Dean of Sheffield gave us a personal tour. And members of the choir at St. Botolph’s, Boston, the church from where the American pilgrims came, attended the evensong we led. Overall it was a fun, challenging, and humbling experience to be part of the continuous worship life of churches, a couple of which have had daily services for a thousand years!

Worship, Serve, and Belong: See Our Young Parishioners in Action Ann DiMisa | [email protected]

Did you hear that loud roar a few days ago coming from the parish hall at St. Andrew’s? Did you wonder what was going on? Well, 63 little ones and 33 volunteers were participating in Vacation Bible School and the theme for this year was: Roar: Life is Wild but God is Good. As adults we sometimes might lose sight of how good God is because we are so busy with family, work, and all those other activities that can take over our lives and schedules. How nice that our little ones can learn that lions, elephants, monkeys, and giraffes can be wild and crazy but God is always there with you and He is good.

When asked what some of their favorite things about VBS are, here are some responses: A four-year-old said “getting snacks”; a six-year-old said “I get to be creative”; and an eight-year-old said “singing”. A phrase from one of the many songs learned during VBS goes like this: “Come on now, join with me, everybody sing! I’m gonna lift my voice to glorify my King! He is a mighty God and worthy of our praise! We give him everything, he’s good in every way!”

During this same week our rising 4th – 8th graders spent each afternoon performing some type of outreach activity. They made quilt squares which will later be used to make quilts for children in foster care; they made tie fleece blankets that were donated to INOVA Children’s Hospital; they sanded and painted blocks for the Preschool; and they made Blessing Bags filled with items for personal hygiene needs for the homeless. What a wonderful example of serving both our church and the community!

And all this is possible because of the wonderful parishioners at St. Andrew’s. A huge thank you to Jewell Gould for his many years of creating wonderful VBS backdrops and to his many helpers to get it set up; this year those helpers were Paul Foley and Moose Bruce. And many thanks to all of you for your donations of time, supplies and financial resources. We all belong to St. Andrew’s and St. Andrew’s belongs to all of us.

Kick-off Sunday Jane Girondo & Christie Dasher | [email protected]

SUNDAY SCHOOL REGISTRATION IS UNDERWAY!

Learning Center (Nursery, Pre-K, and Kindergarten) and Godly Play start the new formation year on Kick-off Sunday, September 8th. Sunday school for grades 1-12 will begin the following Sunday on September 15th. Please stop by the Sunday School /Amy Dutton’s office to pick up a registration form for Sunday School. They will be available on the table outside of the office and online (www.standrews.net/church-forms). You may turn those forms into the Sunday School superintendent in the Sunday school office or Emily Nein in the main office. Please be sure to register your children as soon as possible so we can plan for the needed classes and teachers.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS NEEDED FOR THE 2019/20 SCHOOL YEAR

We need help with sharing the stories and lessons of our faith with the children and youth of our church. This endeavor is staffed by volunteers with the exception of the lead teachers in the Nursery and Pre-K classes. It amounts to approximately 35 total volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering or have questions please contact Jane and Christie.

SUMMER CHILDCARE HELP

While most of the Formation activities are on hiatus for the summer, Learning Center for our youngest parishioners goes on during the 10:00 a.m. service in the Nursery (newborn to 3 year olds) and Pre-K (3-6 year olds) rooms. These are staffed by both paid staff and volunteers. We are in need of more volunteers to help staff the rooms for the remainder of the summer to comply with the Episcopal Safe Church practices. This is a great way to connect with your inner child and serve the Lord. We need helpers for most of August and beginning of September. You can sign up directly at tiny.cc/babywatch2019-3 or send us an email if you want to help. Teens can earn service hours for their volunteering. Thanks for your help!
