VESTRY NOTES

I had a flashback in church a couple of weeks ago, when the choir sang Hymn 149, Eternal Lord of love, behold your Church. “Walking once more the pilgrim way of Lent…toward your presence bent: far off yet here the goal of all desire.” That was a week before Mother Margaret’s last Sunday with us. It reminded me of the 2017 Shrine

Mont retreat—Margaret’s first one with us—where she led a Lectio Divina session at the labyrinth using a Thomas Merton prayer, which reads in part, “My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. … And I know that…you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it…and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.”

I think I’ve been through 9 clergy transitions in my combined 20+ years at St. Andrew’s. To me, it sometimes felt like those frustrating points in the Shrine Mont labyrinth—when things are going great and you’re almost there and could literally reach over and touch that pile of rocks in the center, but then the path takes you “far off” again. As we embark on another transition, it’s good to reflect on how we’ve been blessed over the years with a wonderful, diverse group of priests and seminarians to help us along on our journey. Each time, God did keep leading us down the right road, sending us new shepherds to guide us, each with unique gifts to offer. He did work through us to be there for each other and travel that road together. On behalf of your Vestry, we look forward to making the next leg of the trip with you!

At our April PALs (Parents and Little Ones) event we will have a Discovery Toys representative sharing all the wonderful toys for children including many new products. This is a fundraising event for the Preschool to add new items to our curriculum. Please stop by during Pals, pick up a catalog or visit the link to place an order. Orders are due by April 4th at noon. For more information call Cindy

Connors at 703-868-8697 or [email protected].

Teacher Appreciation is April 8th to 12th this year. Room parents are coordinating surprises for our wonderful preschool teachers.

Spring break is April 15-19, 2019 and the preschool returns to action on April 22nd.

Week of the Young Child is April 29th through May 3rd. This year our theme is “Music Speaks” which will incorporate music and books. Each class will focus on a different family of instruments, which will be showcased at our annual “Sundaes on Monday” event on April 29th in the evening. The children will perform musical numbers related to their instruments and we will all enjoy ice cream sundaes. This is always a popular family event.

Preschool Sunday is May 5, 2019 during the 10:00 a.m. service. This is a very child friendly service with all young children sitting on the Altar steps during the sermon and sharing the songs used in weekly Chapel services. Following the service there will be a moon bounce in the Multi-Purpose Room and light refreshments for young children and their families.

PARISH NEWS Workcamp Leader Needed! Emily Nein | [email protected]

Youth Workcamp needs your help! We only have one adult leader signed up and we have to have at least two. Also, for all of the registered teens to attend camp we have to have a male leader. Workcamp is in Millersville, MD, and runs from June 29th to July 6th. Adults attend for free. If you are interested in spending a week repairing homes with teens from around the country, don’t mind sleeping on an air mattress/cot, or if you have questions, please contact Emily. The deadline to sign up is Monday, April 22nd.

St. Andrew’s “Business Cards” Amy Dutton | [email protected]

We Episcopalians aren't known for evangelizing. But that shouldn't be such a scary concept. After all, it's really just telling others about how great God is! And if that is hard for you, try telling them how great our church is, and then they can come find out for themselves how great God is. To help you we have created a series of business-like cards (called MOO cards) with our information on one side and a series of pictures from our different programs on the other side. They are about the size of postcards and are available for anyone who wants them. Feel free to take a few and leave in your car, your purse or briefcase, or you home to give to people who might be interested in checking us out. Just ask for a handful!

Improvements to the Memorial Garden are underway with the Burke Nursery Landscaping team starting work on March 6th. A revised entry way has been laid out as well as opening up the interior beds and using cobblestones to define all borders. Touches of spring color will soon appear along with new fences in several areas. A new drainage feature is also being completed. The main areas have a new grass surface as well as an expanded viewing and reflection area where benches will soon appear.

Please take some time to visit the garden and get a better sense of this wonderful place of

rest. We are always looking for volunteers with the gardening tasks and will answer any questions you may have by contacting the Memorial Garden Team through [email protected].

To accomplish the improvements this spring, we are seeking contributions for the Memorial Garden Designated Fun d. Our hope is that you will support this important space, which honors our worship, service, and sense of belonging at St. Andrew's.

Annual Trip to Nats Park Tom Pettit | [email protected]

It’s that time again when a large group of parishioners and friends head to Nationals Park to see the Nats take on the Mets on Thursday, May 16th at 1:05 p.m. Most of us will be carpooling at 11:00 a.m. from church. Others may work half a day in D.C. and meet us at the park. Either way, please come with us. Newcomers and friends are especially welcome!

A block of 60 tickets has been reserved for us in section 202 beyond 3rd base—the best seats our group has had in some years. We also have 8 parking spaces in Garage C inside the stadium so it’s just

a short walk from garage to your seat—much easier than the 8 or 10 block walk we’ve had in past years.

The cost is $40 per person to cover both game ticket and garage parking space. If you are not carpooling the game ticket cost is $30 per person. We have already paid for the parking and 50% of game tickets cost so your reimbursement would be appreciated. Please make checks payable to Tom Pettit. You can give your money to Tom at church, or leave it in the church office. Email Tom if you have any questions.
