    (f) indicates featured races organized by other running clubs in Central Illinois. Having them on our circuit gives our members a chance to see how other clubs in the area organize their flagship races.

2007 Lake Run Club Circuit RacesAll races are subject to change.

    • Points are awarded on an age group ba-sis. A first place finish in the age group will award that runner the maximum number of points for that race. (i.e. 1st place in age at a 5K will earn 35 points, 2nd = 34, etc.) Points possible for each race are listed in the far right column in the table on the left. For races with two distances, the higher of the points is for the longer distance.

    • Members who participate in 7 circuit races and earn 50 volunteer points will win an award. The top 10 race scores will count for the final circuit point total.

    • Age group is determined by the age of the participant at the FIRST RACE on the CIRCUIT (March 3rd).

    • Age groups for the circuit are as follows (for both male and female):

    14 & under, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64,

    65-69, and 70 & over.

2008 Lake Run Club Membership Renewal Time!!!!

You will soon be receiving your membership renewal form IN THE MAIL. Please take a few minutes when it arrives to quickly fill out the form and send in your renewal check.

The Lake Run Club is asking all members to renew by February 29, 2008 in order to receive the $5.00 renewal discount. New memberships cost $20 per person, or $25 for a family; while a renewal membership is only $15 per person, or $20 per family – if you renew by the end of February.

Early renewals ensure that you won’t miss a single issue of the newsletter, or a single circuit point of the new circuit race year! And don’t forget the High Five! recognition program – you must be a member prior to the first club-sponsored circuit race of the year in order to participate. Note - Circuit points and volunteer points will not be awarded retroactively.

Help your club volunteers get their work done in a timely fashion…. Send in your renewal form as soon as you receive it. Thanks!!

Profile on Jill Schneiderby Jana Kiefer & Phil “Geno” Warlow

Perky and enthusiastic, Jill Schneider has been a runner for a good part of her life. After her stint as a high school cross country and track runner, though, she decided to take

some time off. Graduate school brought her to Bloomington-Normal where she found the Lake Run Club and running opportunities. And the plot thickens…

J & G Team: Jill, how did you get con-nected with the Lake Run Club, being an out-of-towner and all…

Jill: Well, when I first moved here, I went to a Thursday night run out at Lake Bloom-ington. And of course the first person I met was Kirby Cheek – he is relentless in his pursuit for running buddies. I think I ate at Green Gables every Thursday night the whole first 3 months I lived here. He then persuaded me to run every upcoming event, including the Siberian Express and the Super Bowl Sunday run. I don’t know if I would call this inspiring, but it got my running shoes back in business.

J & G: Egad! It was Kirby who recruited you into the Club? Imagine that! Can you tell our faithful readers about some of your favorite races?

Jill: I don’t actually remember my first race (I was probably in Junior High), but I do remember my first LRC race as a mem-ber – it was Dawson Lake 2003.

The River to River relay is the event I look forward to all year long – my team is always so much fun. Southern Illinois is just one big hill after another… It’s a great challenge!

My favorite LRC race – Dawson Lake. The steam/fog coming off the lake on a humid August morning is breathtaking. (Prior race director) Jen Haggerty and (current race directors) The Lowry Boys – Curt and Kent – have done a great job with this race.

Favorite non-race – Super Bowl Sunday Run. It’s a challenging course. I remember the first year I ran this course; Meg Ander-son and I tackled the 11 mile course together on a very frigid January morning. At mile 6 begins a very long ascent. I decided I would run it while Meg opted to walk it. When I got to the top I thought I would need to wait for Meg, but when I turned around there she was about 5 feet behind me… walking as fast as I was running.

My favorite new race is the Lincoln Half Marathon – a great new course and great additions to the pre & post race.

J & G: We think you hit all the highlights! Are there any race

incidents that stick in your mind?

Jill: It’s too embarrassing to tell the Lake Runner, but for those of you who know me well, you’ll remember Lake Run 2005 around the 7-mile mark, and again at the 2006 Lexington 5K.

J & G: Was it an RB sighting?

Jill: I have had several Rich Beal sight-ings – on the Constitution Trail occasion-ally, at River to River in past years, and at the infamous Run the Woods 5K. I also witnessed him finishing the Lexington 5K this year in a downpour! I even see him volunteering at several races!

J & G: That sort of behavior seems just like RB. Where do you like to volunteer?

Jill: At the Lake Run, because it’s such a big race, and volunteering allows you to get out there and visit with a large number of LRC members.

    J & G: What’s the farthest you’ve ever traveled for a race?

Jill: Ashland, WI for the 2005 Whis-tlestop marathon with Les Usiak. We had been dating only a couple of months and decided to ride in a car for over 8 hours together to run a marathon – what was I thinking…

J & G: Are you saying that wasn’t a good idea? The curious, but smart, J & G Team will stay away from that story! Let’s

change the subject to something a little safer, like – your coolest piece of running gear?

Jill: My “Bright Green” R2R LRC D2D GR8-8 singlet. We could see our teammates at River to River approaching each transition area about a half mile away.

J & G: After a run or race, when you can eat anything you want, what do you pick?

Jill: Oranges, pizza, Sarah Butler cookies and Meg Anderson coffee cake. I am also glad to see that Paul Peacock provided cinnamon rolls for the Lexington 5K since there is no Gridley 5K anymore!

J & G: Those cinnamon rolls are legendary! Besides the great food at races, what got you hooked on running?

Jill: The friends you make, the sense of community among club members, and the health maintained from being active. And I have the best running partners, Lynn Baber, Julie Howell, Leann Steidinger, Melissa Adams, Becky Radel and Les Usiak. I know I can call any one of these people and they will

High Five! The Lake Run Club recognition program

Congratulations to the following preliminary list of Lake Run Club members who participated in all five of our club sponsored circuit races – St Pat’s, Lake Run, Park2Park, Dog Days, and Dawson Lake. If you recall, the qualifications you had to meet to receive the yet-to-be-determined fantastic “recognition prize” included:

be an LRC member on or before the first race (St Pat’s)• run or volunteer at each of the five club sponsored circuit races.•

If you don’t see your name listed here but you believe you qualify, first check the website (www.lakerunclub.org) to see if you were credited with circuit points for the races you ran, and volunteer points for the races at which you volunteered. Contact the race director or your volunteer coordinator to correct any errors.

Sunday Race = Record Crowds = Record Results

A mild drizzle in the early morning hours did not deter the run-ners of the 18th Annual Decatur Shoreline Classic on September 16. After 17 years running on a Saturday, the Shoreline Classic moved its race to Sunday to enhance participa-tion and improve runner safety. 480 participants (an increase of 10%) from 8 states and 73 cities signed up for this year’s race and by 7:15 the weather finally cooperated with perfect running conditions. The 15K kicked off at 7:30 and the 5K at 8:00 am.

In the 15K, for the second year in a row, both course records in the men’s/women’s 15K were bested by the elite field that boasted 7 Olympic Trials qualifiers in the 2008 Olym-pics. In the men’s 15K, Mathew Chesang of Olathe KS defended his 2006 title by bettering his own course record (45:20) by 15 seconds to finish in 45:05. He said, “I run many races around the country and the Shoreline Classic is one of my favorite destinations”.

On the women’s side, Serena Ramsey of Columbia MO, owner of the 10th fastest half marathon in the country this year, demolished last year’s course record of 54:10 by almost 2 minutes in 52:14. She said, “Lake Decatur is one of the best venues in the country to hold a

race. I was very impressed at the professionalism of the race”.

Both winners went home with $1000 in prize money – $500 for the win and $500 for the course record. In the women’s race, Jessica Langford of Rockford finished 2nd, also under last year’s course record. The Shoreline Classic elite field is the 3rd fastest 15K in the country for both male/female races.

In the 5K, Christine Chandler of Champaign won the women’s race in 20:40 and Steven Regan of Monticello won the men’s race in 17:03.

The Shoreline Classic also donated $1500 to area high school running programs based on write-ins on registration forms:

    Mt. Zion $500 (pre-registration winner)• MacArthur $500 (pre-registration winner)• St. Teresa $250 (race day random drawing •

    winner)Normal Community $250 (race day ran-•

    dom drawing winner)

As Race Director of the Decatur Shoreline Classic, I’m happy to pass along this great news: After forwarding our results to the ARRS (Association of Road Racing Statisti-cians), we learned that Merlin Anderson’s performance of 1:00:33 in the 60-64 year age group has placed him on the World 15K 60-64 All-Time List. The list (http://www.arrs.net/Veterans/VR5_R15K.htm) will be updated in November. Congratulations, Merlin, on another great performance!!!

Some “off the Circuit” adventures should be on your race calen-dar, too! There’s a road trip in the making for the Living History Farms Cross Country race at Urbandale, Iowa the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Run 7 miles (well, run might be an exaggeration at some spots during the race), cross a winding creek 7 times, get wet and dirty. Have a great time with about 5,000 other runners. Watch the LRC Forum on our website (www.lakerunclub.org) for road trip information.

The somewhat famous “Tom-O-Hawk” marathon and half mara-thon is happening at Lake Bloomington on December 1. Entry fee for the marathon is a case of “good” beer, or a 12-pack of “good” beer for the half. Define “good” at your own risk. Awards for finishers last year were very handy authentic hatchets! Don’t expect T-shirts, medals, course support, port-a-pots, or other frivolous things for this event, so come prepared!

The Saturday Before Christmas Run is an LRC tradition that lives on in infamy. Green Gables is the place and there aren’t many rules for this run. Start when you want, finish when you want, run as far as you want. The only thing for sure is the party after-wards where you can sample rare and exciting Christmas Beers from around the country. Kirby & Melinda Claus distribute silly gifts to deserving runners, (unless you’re Kevin, then you get a lump of coal) and some lucky person will take home the famous, one-of-a-kind, designed-by-Kathy Kirk beer bottle lamp. You have to see it to believe it.

There you have it. If you can’t find a reason to run with a roster like this, you just aren’t trying. Stay safe.

Marathon Season for the Lake Run Club is probably drawing to a close about now. For everyone who ran their first or fiftieth marathon – Congratula-tions!! I hope it was a great experience for you!

The year is long from over for the Lake Run Club, though. We still have sev-eral very good races left on our Circuit Calendar

for your enjoyment.October 28 is the Allerton Park Trail Run at Monticello, • Illinois. This is a great 5.5 mile trail run among Foo Dogs and Centaurs, often with lots of costumes and lots of mud! Bring your old running shoes to donate to charity. The Second Wind Running Club is the host and they put on a good race.November 4 is one of my favorites – the Canal Connection • 10K at Utica, Illinois. This point-to-point race is one of the flattest races we have to offer on the Circuit, and they have great pizza and goodies afterwards! Did I mention the nicely designed sweatshirts that are part of your race packet? Starved Rock Runners are the hosts.November 11 is the famous Jingle Bell 5K. Don’t expect a • PR in this race because it gets bigger every year. The post-race party is one very good reason to run this race, regardless of your time. If you don’t want to run it, volunteer! It’s a great cause.December 8 wraps up our Circuit with the Deer Run Run • at COMLARA Park near Hudson. This is a trail run with obstacles to hop or jump over – or crawl under if you must – added for spice. Last year we raced in calf-deep snow and frigid temperatures – hard to tell what the conditions will be this year! Great hot soup, chili, and hot chocolate help thaw runners out after this 8K run.

    President’s Message

wait for me to get home from work or get up early on a weekend if necessary, just so we can chat and get in a good run. They are the best!

J & G: What motivates you to stay at it?

Jill: Athletes that have overcome huge obstacles really motivate me – paraplegics who do triathlons, leg amputees that run 3 hour marathons; and I run for those people who can’t do it themselves. I run because I can and I don’t ever want to know what it’s like to not be able to run.

J & G: Running is what we make it. Thanks for letting the J & G Team get inside your head a little bit, Jill, so our running readers have the chance to get to know the club’s new Volunteer Coordinator a little better. Stay safe, everyone.

TUESDAY NIGHT GROUP RUNSMeg & Merlin Anderson’s house

    107 S Orr Dr, Normal

    by Meg Anderson

With Daylight Saving Time ending, it will be getting dark as many of us are driving home from work. It’s a great time to run with friends, rather than alone. Remember to keep your runs safe by wearing reflective gear or carrying a flashlight to be visible to others, especially cars.

Runners are invited to meet at our house on Tuesdays, starting on November 6, to run with a group. We usually run 4 miles, but the course is a figure 8 in our neighborhood that can be adjusted each mile. Merl goes out with the faster runners and I will always run/walk with the “back of the packers.”

Please arrive after 5:15 pm and we’ll leave promptly at 5:30. The light will be on, so just walk in the front door.

Directions to 107 South Orr:From Veterans Parkway, turn west onto College Avenue (towards ISU). After the second stoplight (Towanda Ave), take the first left which is South Orr. We are the 4th house on the right. Feel free to park in the driveway. Any questions, call us at 454-4820.

    Hope you can join us!

Attendees: Jana Kiefer, Cath-ie Haab, Bob Lambert, Pam Walden, Vicki King, Mitch Hobbs, Merlin Anderson, and Jennifer Haggerty

Membership (Julie Howell): The club currently has a total of 917 individual members with 490 households. There were no new members for the month of September.

Treasurer (Bob Lambert): Upcoming events include Jingle Bell 5K and Deer Run Run 8K.

Newsletter (Vicki King): The newsletter software was upgraded recently to Adobe Indesign. Adobe Pagemaker was previously used. Although Pagemaker is still being sold, it has only minimal support (no enhancements being made to it). The October newslet-ter was produced using the new software. One of the benefits is closer integration with our photo editing software.

The combined Dec/Jan issue will have a cut-off or deadline of Nov 15 for submission of articles and columns. The expected delivery of the Dec/Jan issue is early to mid December. After that, we will

be back on the regular monthly schedule with a Jan 1 deadline for the February newsletter.

Volunteer Committee (Pam Walden): The transition of the Vol-unteer Coordinator position to Jill Schneider is going very well. Also, the volunteer party was a success and went well. Approxi-mately 60 members attended. There was positive feedback for the venue, Gill Street. The February 2008 LRC banquet is in the beginning stages of being planned. She still needs to find finish line coordinators for two upcoming races.

Billing/Advertising (Cathie Haab): All recent races have been billed. The board discussed clarification of billing for race bibs at the Danvers Day 5K.

Programs:Marathon Training (Merlin Anderson): The program had • a final total of 33 members. Many participants are running the Chicago marathon this upcoming Sunday.

    THURSDAY NIGHT GROUP RUNSOften Running

    206 S Linden, Normal

    by Kirby Cheek

Join the crowd. There’s safety in numbers!

With the clocks changing in early November, it’s starting to get dark early now. Sooo, the Thursday Night Running Group will shift from running at Lake Bloomington to running in town, beginning Thursday November 8.

Everyone is welcome to join us. The more the merrier – and safer! We meet at Often Running on Thursday nights, at 5:30pm. Running is on the Constitution Trail when lighting permits, or on quieter back streets and sidewalks. The full distance is usually about 4 miles, but if that seems a bit challenging, the out and back course easily permits shorter distances.

Pace is not important. There’s a group of fast runners, for those who wish to push the envelope; and a bunch of really nice “social” runners, out for some exercise and health benefits, running at a very conversational pace.

Not sure about running in cold weather? Just show up. There will be lots of advice and tips from experienced runners. Our goal: No one gets left behind; no one runs alone.

    VOLUNTEER ROUNDUPby Dawn Dieckgrafe

It has been mentioned several times in this newsletter that the Lake Run Club has a great volunteer base. In appreciation for its volunteers, the Lake Run Club held a volunteer

appreciation party on September 29 at the Gill Street Sports Bar & Restaurant. There were approximately sixty attending the party. It was a perfect evening for an outdoor celebration.

Since we were on the far patio, we had the advantage of having entertainment (the DexRays were playing on the other patio) but still being able to talk without having to shout. From everything I overheard, a good time was had by all.

And speaking of overhearing, there were some conversations going on that would only happen with a group of runners:

“I wonder if french fries could be considered • carbo-loading?”“Can we really drink beer without running • first?”“How did that chicken dinner compare to a • Green Gables burger?”“Do you think the green M&Ms count as • vegetables?”

Thanks go to the Lake Run Club and the Volunteer Committee for hosting such a nice event! And of course, a big THANK YOU goes to all club vol-unteers for all of your hard work this year.

We still have a few more events this year, and we’re always looking for new volunteers. Please consider joining the fun (and I do mean fun!) by volunteering in some way. Contact our current Volunteer Coordinator Pam Walden ([email protected], ph 662-4405) or the new Volunteer Coordina-tor Jill Schneider ([email protected]), or respond to one of the requests for help often posted on the LRC forum.

Da Deer Run Run 8KCircuit Race Profile:

    by Paul Peacock

The Details:Da Deer Run Run is a challenging 8K (just under 5 mile) trail run held at COMLARA County Park near Hudson, Illinois (just 8 miles north of Bloomington off I-39). This year’s race will be on Saturday December 8 at 11:00 am. The late start gives the sun some opportunity to warm things up if it’s cold, and also melt things off if it’s snowy (or possibly thaw out the mud so it’s nice and slippery!).

Registration starts at 9:00 am on race day at the beach house of Evergreen Lake. The $18 fee ($23 after November 18) includes a long sleeve T-shirt, post-race soup, and one free beverage at Green Gables. Take exit I-39 at Lake Bloomington (number 8) and go left (west) until you reach COMLARA Park. Follow park signs to the Main Recreation Area & Visitor Center and then continue down to the beach house to register and start the run.

The Course:Da Deer Run Run is designed as a European style cross-country course. The race begins in an open area of mowed grass and con-tinues in the open for about a mile and a half before heading into the woods. To keep runners from getting bored, however, the kind maintenance crew at COMLARA Park places a few steeplechase barriers along the route set a little over two feet off the ground. Yes – you read it right! Steeplechase barriers – those large metal hurdles used in races that you see in photographs where the runner is falling on his or her face!

After maneuvering over the barriers, runners head to the timber onto well established trails for about two miles of weaving in and out of densely wooded sections. The trail goes over a few logs and possibly through a stream before heading back into open field. While the trail is fairly wide, it can be uneven and steep in certain sections. Solid footing is sometimes a challenge to find, especially if the snow comes early.

Just as the runners have conquered the trails, they head back to

the start, over (you guessed it) more steeplechase barriers. This time, however, the ol’ legs will probably have a little less spring in them. I suggest all but the most youthful and foolish use the vault technique! A map of the course can be found at: http://www.usatf.org/routes/view.asp?rID=84969

Paul Rollet of Chatham holds the record for the fastest male time, running 27:49 in 2002. Lucy Whittacker of Peoria is the fastest ever female finisher with a 33:59 in 2003.

The Director:Bill Wasson, the Director of McLean County Parks and Recre-ation, has been the race director since its inception seven years ago. While Bill enjoyed running in high school and college, directing this race at COMLARA Park and coaching his son Alec have brought him back to the sport. Alec, a freshman at Lexington High School, competes as the only male cross country runner while also playing for the football team. Being more involved with running has renewed Bill’s motivation to run himself and he has began competing in more races over the past couple of years along with his wife, Dawn.

How it All Began:The Parks Department had put together an annual mountain bike race at COMLARA and was looking at other active recreational activities to complement the Department’s existing passive leisure offerings. The combination of Bill’s background in cross-country and several miles of established trails within the park made a trail run a perfect fit.

While Bill was running in college, his home course of Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville had hosted the 1982 TAC (now

  • The Lake Runner • November 2007 Page 11

USATF) Cross Country Championship and World Qualifier meet. At the time, there was much debate regarding if barriers would be used in that race to reflect the European courses. Years later, Bill remained intrigued by the use of steeple barriers, and he thought adding them to Da Deer Run Run would make it a unique experience for central Illinois runners. After Bill talked with Jeff Pegg from ISU during his summer running camp in the Park, Jeff agreed to supply the barriers for the race. Present track coach Elvis Ford and the ISU Athletic Department staff have been a tremendous help in continuing this race tradition.

While the course has been modified slightly over the years to adjust for conditions and improve the participant experience, the original premise remains the same: create a fun yet challenging trail run just before winter moves in for good! The race has also generated interest from other running groups and Bill is especially excited that COMLARA Park will be hosting the High School Cornbelt Conference Cross-Country meet this year. Much of the meet is on the same course as the first and last mile of Da Deer Run Run and he hopes that more local teams will consider hosting meets there in the future.

The Experience:In addition to the course and the barriers, there is the weather! Over 100 runners have turned out for temperatures that have ranged from the high 40’s in 2002 to, let’s just say, MUCH cooler. Trail conditions have ranged from dry in some years to last year’s near foot of snow.

Regardless of the weather, runners will definitely enjoy the now famous Deer Run soups, a great post-race treat that keeps you warm while waiting for the results. Awards are custom made plaques that include a photograph from the previous year’s race. So lucky runners might even receive one with their own like-ness on the front! After the awards, runners can head to Green Gables to swap race stories for one last time before winter over a complementary beverage from the race. The first one is free, however many runners stick around for a few more.

The race also gives special awards to the top three-person teams. These awards are now based on how each runner places within his/her age group. Past years have included teams from universities and other running clubs such as Second Wind. Bill hopes that more runners can join together to create a more team-oriented race.

Best Reason to Run:What makes this race unique? Everything! The time of the year, the setting, steeple barriers, and team scores. Add in a couple of deer walking by now and then and you have a great event to meet, run and socialize. 100% of those completing a post-race survey said they are coming back in 2007 (and that was in a cold year!), so finish off your racing season with at bit of adventure and do Da Deer Run Run!

Lessons Learned – Great Time Hadalso ran all the way up the mountain as well! That’s why Larry is one of my many running heroes!

We also ran into local runner Rachel Roggenbuck of Chiddix Junior High cross country fame. She was up on the mountain too, dragging her Mom and Dad along to be sure she stayed in shape while her teammates were back on the mainland competing. It was nice to see all the local B/N runners staying true to their routine even while in Hawaii. We are a sick bunch aren’t we?

Stacie and I managed to pack about everything we could into our vacation – a couple of snorkel trips, a bike ride down the mountain (starting at 2:30 am), a drive on the Road to Hana, and more than a few Mai Tai’s on Front Street Lahaina! So, as the week went on and the weather stayed hot, we decided that this would be more about the experience than about racing.

Saturday morning came early. The locals know a little about run-ning in the heat, so the gun goes off at 5:30 sharp. That enables us to get in almost an hour of running before the sun rises. But first you need to take care of business and yes, the lines for the port-a-potties are long in Hawaii too! But hey, it’s a chip-timed race, so who cares? We figured we’d take our time in line and then start DFL to make Kirby Cheek and Pat Dunagan proud.

Well, we certainly started DFL… behind 1200+ runners! We were running on a two lane frontage road, so suffice it to say it was a

    by Tim Rood

It seemed like many months ago that my wife Stacie passed her last CPCU exam and qualified for a conferment trip to Hawaii. Soon after qualifying she was checking out some running sites and found that the Maui Marathon and Half Marathon would be held while we were there.

Wanting to finish her journey back to running after giving birth to Jossie, she said, “How about we sign up for Maui?” Now I may be considered a little crazy when it comes to these types of things but even I thought, “A marathon while in Hawaii? Nah, too much work!” However, I was game enough to agree to run the half marathon with her, so off we went into the internet and committed ourselves to a little workout in paradise.

After arriving in Hawaii we managed to get in three or four workouts prior to the big day. One of those was a leisurely 10 mile round trip jaunt from our hotel to Diamond Head Crater and while there, a short 20 minute climb to the top. It was a very nice view, but I’m not sure it was the best idea we’ve ever had… But hey, everyone else was doing it, so we said why not?

As luck would have it, fellow Lake Run Club members Larry and Laurel Schumacher went to Hawaii as well. So we had company on the trip, and on this run. It was fun to watch as Larry (the over achiever that he is) not only ran the out and back 10 miles, but

  • The Lake Runner • November 2007 Page 13

tough go for the first mile. We passed many a fundraiser just out enjoying a Saturday morning stroll. The second mile brought us out to the highway, again with only one lane closed for the runners. This made the second mile almost as unbearable as the first.

Once we got into mile 3 we were able to pick it up a bit, but it was still a little tight in spots. Miles 4 and 5 brought us through Front Street Lahaina (think Mai Tai’s) where there was a little music and a festive atmosphere. The big question was, were they just waking up or had they not gone to bed yet? We didn’t care; it was nice to soak up some of their spirit. This being an out and back course, we made it to the turn around and then headed back to the finish. We got to see the front side of most of those 1200 runners we had passed on the way out.

The sun was up, the waves were rolling, and the surfers were man-ning their posts waiting for the Big Kahuna! These many beautiful sights made the miles fly by. Along the way Stacie taught me a real neat trick. If you walk through the water stops, it’s easier to thank the volunteers and spectators and it’s also easier to maintain your pace! I know I had heard this before but I didn’t really believe it. Wow, the things you can learn running with your wife!

Before we knew it we were headed back down the frontage road into the throngs (ok maybe dozens) of spectators bringing us home. As we crossed the finish line we hit the watches, and what do you know? Stacie ran a PR, finishing in 1:48:36! After all the flying,

snorkeling, biking, and definitely our share of cocktails – a PR! Looking back, I guess we learned another lesson: You can start out several minutes slower than your expected pace, enabling you to feel strong, run negative splits, and in the end – surpass all your expectations. I guess I may have heard that advice a time or two as well, but hey – I have also been told a man needs several trips around the track before things sink in…

We were pretty excited by how well we did, so when we got back to the hotel we logged onto the internet but guess what – no chip time! Now I know we were wearing chips and crossed all the mats, but the listed finish time was the overall time from when the gun sounded. Of course, that was several minutes slower than our watch time. After several fruitless attempts to find the chip time Stacie noticed the fine print on the application: Gun start – chip finish. Oh.

Well, even with those extra few minutes added to our “watch time”, Stacie was still able to finish 8th in her age group and we both finished in the top 100 runners. And because we had our watches on we could still report our “real” run time.

If you ever have the opportunity to go to Maui in September, I would definitely recommend giving the Maui Half Marathon a shot. Just get to the pottie early and get a good starting spot before the gun sounds. Aloha.

American Discovery Trail Marathonby Jana Kiefer

I vacation in Colorado each fall and decided this year that I might as well do a marathon while I was out there. In 2006, I ran the Teva Evergold 10K Trail Run at Vail and discovered that I liked trail running. So, I searched until I found a trail marathon in Colorado Springs on Monday, September 6 – Labor Day. Perfect!

We’d be running at 6,000 feet. Even though the altitude gain dur-ing the whole race would be only 600 feet, running at 6,000 feet is way different than running in Illinois. Hiking around the Maroon Bells near Aspen, and to the summit of Mount Elbert (14,400 ft) near Leadville, proved to be an excellent way of finding out there is NO oxygen in Colorado! There’s also no humidity, which was both a good thing and a bad thing.

I was tent camping the week before the race, but moved to a hotel in the Springs on Saturday in order to give my body a break and rest up for the marathon. I had no trouble finding the Colorado Running Company on Bijou Street and picking up my race packet and shirt. My hotel was less than a mile from the race start in America the Beautiful Park, and the hotel was offering free shuttle service both to and from the race.

Race morning dawned clear and warm – a high of 88 degrees was predicted. Three races were taking place from the same park that morning with the marathon starting at 6:30 am followed by the half-marathon at 7:30 am, and the 5K at 7:45 am.

Eight other runners were waiting for the shuttle in the lobby when I arrived at 5:45 am. We were scheduled to leave the hotel at 6:00 am. I was a little nervous having less than a half hour till race time, but that proved to be no problem at all. It was a 5 minute ride to the drop-off point and a short walk over to the race start. There were only 171 participants in the full marathon which meant no long lines anywhere! Gear drop-off was a pile of bags inside a circle of lawn chairs! An “on your honor” sort of thing…

The start was just beautiful. The sun was coming up and hot air balloons were launching in the same park as part of the Labor Day celebration. I lined up DFL, and was still only about 50 feet back from the starting line. Our small group started out on a road, and then quickly cut across the park to a bridge that took us across Fountain River (more like a creek by Illinois standards) and headed south along the American Discovery Trail toward Cheyenne Mountain. Almost immediately I fell into step with a lady who was leading the 5:30 pace group. It turned out that I WAS the 5:30 pace group, but we did gather a few more partici-pants as we went along.

The course took us south for about 3 miles along the river then turned us around and headed us back up the trail. We were nearly at mile six when we passed America the Beautiful Park on our way north.

Over the next few miles the half-marathoners began to overtake our pace group and the scenery changed to more commercial with occasional parks and ball fields thrown in. The Rampart Range was always there on our left, though, if I needed a mountain fix.

At the north end of town the scenery improved a bit as we ap-proached our turnaround at mile 16 near the south entrance to the Air Force Academy. The terrain became rolling and although the hills weren’t big, they were still hills at 6,350 feet and worth walking.

I’d lost my pace group and was now running with a very nice firefighter from Palmer Colorado named Chuck. Chuck was an ultra marathoner training for his first 100 mile run. Ken, a first-time marathoner, and another nice man (I didn’t get his name) who was on his 48th state popped up from time to time. Eventually, Chuck and I outpaced them, and eventually, Chuck outpaced me and I settled in to run alone for a while.

The last few miles were pretty hot and I was pretty tired. The low humidity had dehydrated me more than I realized, even though I had taken water at every one of the plentiful water stops along the way. By the time I crossed the Fountain River for the last time and headed into America the Beautiful Park and the finish line, I was ready to be done.

The finish line was a little less extravagant than some marathon finish lines. We ran under a clock between two 8-foot tables where the finish line crew were recording finish times and logging results. I finished in 5:35:53, good enough for third place in my age group!

Someone tore my tag off and handed me a bottle of water and a little boy handed me my medal.

I followed a man who seemed to know where the beer was – and I was right. With a Colorado Springs microbrew named Laugh-ing Lab in hand, I re-connected with Chuck and the man with 48 states (I still didn’t get his name!). We shared a shade canopy with a group of runners from the Springs who worked for Honeywell. They had formed a little running group inspired by Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Definitely my kind of runners! Two pieces of pizza and another Laughing Lab later, I decided to wander back to my hotel and use the walk as a way to stretch out and loosen up. I collected my gear bag from the lawn chair stockade and left America the Beautiful Park.

I enjoyed the atmosphere of this small marathon. The registration fee was reasonable and the technical race shirts are very nice. There was no crowding at the start, no jockeying for position or traffic jams at water stops. No long lines at the port-a-pots – or anywhere else! Pedestrians cheered us on and cyclists called out encouragement.

If you’re looking for loud music and screaming fans, this one isn’t for you. If you’re looking for some peace and quiet, and some darned nice people – check it out. It’s a nice race in a beautiful place.

    WHAT IS A V02 TEST?

A V02 test measures the amount ofoxygen your body uses at differentexertion levels while you exerciseon a treadmill. This is done as youbreathe through a mask during ashort workout. The recordinginformation is then used tocalculate your personal TargetIntensity Zones. These Zoneswill give you the specific targetheart rates required for each levelof intensity. Exercising within your Zones will get youresults that will amaze you!

But what do they mean by low tomoderate intensity? Some fitness professionals refer you to a chart on thewall averaging all age groups and fitness levels. Othersestimate intensity based on your perception of how hardyou’re working. In either case, there is a wide range oftarget heart rates, differing by as much as 30 beats per

minute. Now you canreally know if you aredoing it right.

    METABOLIC TESTING

A Metabolic Test measures what you burn when you’reat rest and play. This way your ensured to eat enoughduring long training session, but not eat too much in theoff time. RMR - Your resting metabolic rate is unique to

you. It is the number of calories you would burn if you sat ina chair all day long. It is used to calculate how much moreyou probably burn by the simple daily activites of walking, eating, driving, etc. RMR is used to calculate how manycalories you would burn if you exercised moderately for 30minutes.

$100 for one test or $150 for both

Most of McLean County Parks experiences take place outdoors, in conditions often quite different from the controlled environments and predictability of buildings and cities. Nature and weather occur on their own schedule, sometimes unexpectedly, often beyond the control of people to change them. The undersigned, a participant in the Deer Run Run, offered by the McLean County Parks and Recreation Department agrees as follows:1. I acknowledge that activities at the Deer Run Run may required strenuous physical activity and endurance. 2. Terrain conditions, weather, and other people affect the overall activity experience. I am aware of the factors that follows:

    - The activities may take place on terrain that is ungroomed. Terrain varies greatly and may be icy, wet, or rough, depending on weather and other participants. - Winds, temperature, and occasional storms can effect the experience. I realize that I should take precautions and guard for weather-related conditions.- The activities may take place on or near Evergreen Lake, a body of water, which presents natural risks commonly associated with aquatic activities.

    3. I certify that, to the best of my knowledge, I have no physical, mental, or emotional condition which might be aggravated by this activity, or which might in any way endanger staff or other participants.

    4. I have informed the McLean County Parks & Recreation Department of any physical, mental, or emotional condition which might effect my ability to participate in and withstand all possible trail running activities.

    5. I will obey all rules, regulations, and directives of the McLean County Parks & Recreation Department and its representatives and will assist by informing and/or calling to the attention to any situation which might result in injury.

Thus acknowledging the rigors of all activities connected with the Deer Run Run and the unpredictability and power of natural and weather events, and in consideration for being accepted as a participant in this program, I hereby for myself, my heirs, my executors, administrators, and assignees, do hereby release and discharge the County of McLean, Illinois, and its employees, agents, officers, Board Members, representatives and volunteers for all claims and damages, demands, actions, whatever in amy manner arising out of my participation in this Deer Run Run and furthermore do hereby indemnify and forever hold harmless the the County of McLean, Illinois, and its employees, agents, officers, Board Members, representatives and volunteers from any and all actions, claims, and demands including legal costs which hereafter arise or are instituted or recovered against the indemnified parties by me or other parties whether on account of personal injuries, suffering, death or property damage sustained by me, or due to my negligent, willful and wanton, or intentional actions. Please recognize that the McLean County Park and Recreation Department does not carry medical accident insurance for injuries sustained in its programs. Therefore, each person registering themselves or a family member for a recreation program/activity should review their own health insurance policy for coverage. It must be noted that the absence of health insurance coverage does not make the McLean County Department of Parks & Recreation responsible for the payment of medical expenses.
