Volume 2014 Issue 03
Our Lenten Theme this year is…“Restored In Christ”
The season of Lent is a time for us to face together the brokenness of our lives and our world, and then turn that
brokenness over to Christ so that we can be restored by him through the cross. This theme works in well with our tag line
"Engaging God in our daily life"…as we seek ways to not only engage God but to honestly feel God engaging us in our
brokenness. Written by seminary professor Dr. Joel Biermann, each service in this stirring series focuses on a certain
event in the Lenten story and takes a good, hard look at a broken element from that particular story. Coming to an
understanding of how each of these broken elements leads to restoration in Christ is key to understanding what it
ultimately means to live today as new creations in Christ.
Please join us for a time of fellowship, worship and being restored in Christ.
March 5th Ash Wednesday 12:15pm & 7 pm “Broken Hearts Restored” • Joel 2:12-14
Our hearts are broken in sorrow over sin; Christ restores our hearts through his forgiveness.

Judas breaks his trust with Jesus by betraying him; our broken trust is restored through the sacrifice of Christ.
March 26th “Broken Bread Restored” • John 6:48-58
Bread is broken at the Last Supper; we are restored through the Bread of Life,
Jesus.
April 2nd “Broken Promises Restored” • Matthew 26:69-75
Peter’s broken promises to never deny Jesus are restored by the surpassing love
of Christ.
April 9th “Broken Justice Restored” • 2 Corinthians 5:20-21

HISTORY IN ACTION or . . . A Blast from the Past! A Blast from the Past! A Blast from the Past! A Blast from the Past!
by Judy Lybrand, Archives
March 2014
The back of the bulletin of our congregation on February 20, 1944, during the heart of the Second World War
(before D-day, while Anne Frank in hiding in the Netherlands was writing her diary), contained this message:
As Lent BeginsAs Lent BeginsAs Lent BeginsAs Lent Begins . . . . . . . . . . . .
Last year the rumor went around Denmark that the Nazis were going to require the Jews in that country
to wear the yellow star. That would mean that every Jew would be branded, wherever he went, as a
member of a despised race. This yellow star would encourage people to humiliate and mistreat the Jews.
Then the King of Denmark spoke. “If the Nazis want to put the yellow Jewish star in Denmark, I
and my family shall wear it,” he said. “We shall wear it as a sign of the highest distinction.”
What a difference that would make! Suppose you were required to sear a brand that marked you
as one to be scorned and punished. And then your king would offer to stand with you in your shame.
That would take away the disgrace and the pain. “My king wears this mark with me,” you could say.
But we are branded, all of us. We bear the mark of human nature, of selfishness and pride. We share with all
humanity this weakness which results in the pain and punishment of life. We cannot, by our own efforts, escape from this
condition of being human. These sins of ours, committed in every land and through all the years, cause our wars, our
suffering, our sorrow.
Then God speaks. “I too shall share in the sufferings of my children,” he says. “I shall walk among mankind as a
man, and endure the temptations, the weariness, the sorrow, and the death which are part of every human life.” In the
Lord Jesus, God walked among us. Although he had no need of being numbered among sinners, he took upon himself the
full burden of suffering which sin always brings. Even unto the Cross—he shared with humanity the shameful
consequences of evil deeds.
That makes everything different for us. We are not alone in our troubles. Our king has shared our pain and
sorrow. He is not far away. He is near us, loving us, dying for us.
“Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden,” the Lord Jesus said. He speaks to those who have been
wounded, to those who have lost loved ones, to those whose burdens are heavier than they can bear. “God is by your
side,” he assures us. He cannot remove the wars and sorrows of this world, because he has given his children freedom to
decide things for themselves, and they have chosen to disobey him. But he has not abandoned his wayward children. He
has shared our human situation. He tells us that through our trust in him, there is a remedy for the heartbreak of these
days.
PILGRIMAGE THROUGH LOSS: AN UPCOMING LENTEN SEMINAR
WITH JIM AND LINDA HUNT!
As part of a Special Lenten Weekend, sponsored by The Episcopal Church of the Advent, First
Presbyterian Church and St. John’s Lutheran Church, authors Jim and Linda Hunt will host a
seminar on Saturday, March 15th, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The seminar will take place in the
Parish and Community Life Center at The Episcopal Church of the Advent. Linda Hunt’s
remarkable new book presents a loving balm for sorrow. In 12 short chapters, each with a
distinctive emphasis, Pilgrimage Through Loss proves the importance of sharing stories, savoring
solitude, designing rituals, discovering the healing in forgiveness, and perhaps most importantly,
acknowledging that timetables and distractions “are the great enemies of grief.”
To register for the seminar on March 15th, please call 864-504-3685.

MUSIC NOTESMUSIC NOTESMUSIC NOTESMUSIC NOTES March 2014
Music is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us.
Martin Luther
Turn the page on the calendar and Lent is upon us! Shrove Tuesday is March 4th. The festivities will be in the PLC
and will include music by St. John’s Brass and a ceremonial burning of the palms from Palm Sunday to make ashes for
Ash Wednesday.
Lenten services will be at 12:15 and 7:00 each Wednesday during Lent. In both services, we will be following a
course entitled “Restored in Christ”, which promises to be an inspiring walk through the Lenten season. The Chancel
Choir will lead the Ash Wednesday 7:00 service.
The Chancel Choir rehearses at 7:45 following the 7:00 Lenten service. New members are welcome as we prepare for
the Lenten and Easter seasons.
Wednesday Lenten Music: Once again a Noon Choir will be formed to lead the mid-day services. In the past, this choir
has had a brief rehearsal at 11:40, following the morning Bible Study. Regular rehearsals will follow the Wednesday
lunch (1:30), for approximately a half hour. If you attend the 12:15 service and like to sing, please consider giving the
Noon Choir a try. Various soloists and ensembles are usually scheduled to sing for the 7:00 services.
The Spartanburg Repertory Company has been rehearsing here for the last two months for their Spring production. It
will be the Gilbert and Sullivan opera “Iolanthe”. Not one of the better known operas, “Iolanthe” is typical Gilbert and
Sullivan – fast-paced, funny and full of unusual twists and turns. The set for this production is being built by our own
Chip Hicks. Lois Ann Hesser is singing the part of the Dowager Queen. Mark your calendars now to see it at Broome
High School Community Center on March 28th, 29th and 30th. Let’s have a good SJLC turnout to support this group!
On March 27th, the St. John’s Handbell Choir will present an outreach program of music at White Oak Estates.
March 30 will be a Joint 11:00 service held in the Nave of the church.
The Chancel Choir sings for all of the 11:00 services. On March 3rd, Bill Drake will sing during Communion. Bill is
through with chemo and radiation and is awaiting rescans and surgery. Pain management is his big issue right now.

SERVANT SUNDAYSERVANT SUNDAYSERVANT SUNDAYSERVANT SUNDAY - One Service in the Nave - March 30th - 11:00 AM
Remember to bring your family's "Specialty Side Dish" or that "Famous Dessert" for our noon-time meal,
since the main course will be furnished by the Fellowship Committee following the service. And if you don't
cook, or forget to bring something, it's ok; you can make an offering so everyone feels comfortable joining in!
While we enjoy our meal, we will be treated to the introduction and demonstration of our new St. John's
website by the Communication and Technology Committee.
After this presentation we will be packing backpacks for our outreach program with Mary H. Wright School.
The Social Ministries Committee requests your help with filling the Backpack Buddies backpacks shortly after
lunch - and don't worry, if you haven't tried it - it'll be fun!
Because we are blessed to have a fully stocked professional kitchen in our Parish Life Center, a second activity
will be a Parish Life Center Kitchen information and explanation session by Tina Nichols and the
Property Committee. Come and check out the possibilities!
The Health Ministry Committee has also arranged for the Blood Connection's Bloodmobile to be present and
accepting blood donations from 12-4pm in the front parking lot.
Clean up following the activities will be lead by the Health, Youth, and Fellowship Committees; and don't be
surprised if you see some LCY Youth, Home-Schoolers, or maybe even some Boy Scouts or Cub Scouts
helping out, too!
We look forward to seeing everyone for our first Servant Sunday of 2014 - and you don't want to miss this one
… so be sure to mark it on your calendar!
