SHIRDI DAIRY BY SHRI G.S. KHAPARDE 1910 December 5 Monday Manmad -Shirdi.

Last night I & my son Baba left by 10.15 P.M. train as proposed. Purandare, Pathare,

Dhaujisha, his woodman, Bapu & others came to the station to see us off & the first

two brought flowers. I slept as soon as I got into my compartment though I was

awakened often. We reached Manmad about 9 A.M. today and stayed at the Railway

station till nearly 1 P.M. I met one or two young men, on the station staff who very

kindly helped us with things. One Haripant of Yeola also met us. In the train to Co-

pargaon, we met an Englishman who appeared exceptionally good mannered and

obliging. We reached Copargaon station about 2 P.M. hired two conveyances, one

for things and the other for ourselves to travel in. Bhaskar Rao assisted us with ton-

gas and gave us guavas to eat at his house and accompanied us to Shirdi, which we

reached about 4 P.M.. We put up in the wada built for the convenience of people by

Mr Chandkar. Madhavrao Deshpande was very obliging & helped us & treated us

like guests. There are in the Wada Tatyasaheb Nulkar with his family, Bapusaheb

Jog and Babasaheb Sahasrabuddhe.

We all went to see Sayin Maharaj soon after our arrival. He was in the Masjid. After

salutations I & my son offered the fruits brought by us & gave some money at his

request. The Sayin Saheb then said that he has not been well for the last two years &

more, that he used to eat only barley cake & take a little water. He showed his foot

and pointed to a small sore, said it was the string worm, that it was extracted but the

string snapped & then it reappeared & so on. He said he heard that it would not be

well with him till he went to his native town. He said he kept it in view but that was

all, he cared more for his people than even for his own life. He said he found no rest

as people troubled him. It could not be helped. Then he told us to withdraw which we

did. Towards evening he passed by the wada & we went & saluted him. I & Mad-

havrao Deshpande were together. After we saluted he “Go to the wada & sit quiet.”

So I & Madhavrao returned. We all sat talking. They have many miracles to relate. I,

Baba & Babasaheb Sahasrabuddhe had something to eat at night and after I returned

to bed, a strange thing happened. The wife of Das Ganu who has written the

“Arvachim Sant lilamrit ” & known as Tai came & lay down by my side. I do not

know how long she lay like.

SAI’S NEWS FROM TIME MACHINE There was in Shirdi, a very quaint and queer fellow, by name Nanavali. He

looked to Baba’s work and affairs. he once approached Baba, who was seated

on His seat and asked Him to get up, as he wanted to occupy the same. Baba,

at once got up and left the seat, which he had occupied. After sitting there a

while Nanavali got up, and a sked Baba to resume His seat. Then, Baba sat

down and Nanavali fell at His feet. Baba did not show the slightest displeas-

ure in being dictated or ousted. This Nanavali loved Baba so much that, he

breathed his last on the thirteenth day of Baba’s Mahasamadhi. (Chapter X in

A HUMBLE TRIBUTE OF PRAISE TO SHRI SAINATH

Baba's ears were pierced and had not undergone circumcision. If any prasad were brought at a time

other the afternoon Naivedya and if Bade Baba or other Muslims were present, Baba would order

the first "Sura" of Koran to be recited and would himself join in. But in the absence of Muslims, this

practice was never follow.

There was Hindu - Muslim rivalry;

Therefore , to bring about unity and amity.

The masjid and the fire worship were embraced by you,

To show your "leela" to the devotees. ….71

You are beyond caste and greed,

You are Brahman, the essence to Truth;

You are That, verily,

You are beyond human conception ! ….72

Giving free rein to surmises and conjectures,

Arguments have flourished about you.

There, my insignificant

Words, how will they prevail? ….73

But when I behold you,

I cannot remain silent;

Because for encomium, words

Are normally the only means. ….74

Therfore, by means of words,

Whatever description is possible,

That I will always proffer,

With your grace. ….75

Saints, I reckon

Higher than gods;

For distinctions such as mine and thine

find not a place in their proximity. ….76

HIRANYAKASHAPU and RAVANA27

Were killed because of their hatred of god;

Such a deed has never been done by saints. ….77 27.The two demons killed by Lord Vishnu and Shri Rama respectively.

DEVOTEES EXPERIENCE

DEVOTEES CORNER

Om Sai Ram Om Sai Ram,

My devotion towards Baba began at a phase when I was so fed up with the

failures in life. My younger sister is a great devotee of Shirdi Sai. For months

I turned down her requests to accompany her to the temple on Thursdays.

She always had and still has immense faith in Baba and attributed every

thing in her life to Saibaba .She told me that the murti of Baba was so peace-

ful that I would find solace in Baba . One Thrusday she and my mother

begged me to go with her , I agreed to accompany her only be coz she had

been requesting me for so many weeks. I went to the Temple with no faith

and thought I would spend my time waiting outside and maybe watching

how the other devotees prayed. As we went inside the premises there was a

huge crowd in the temple being a Thursday there was hardly any place for

me to stand outside so I decided to accompany my sister to the main temple

which had the Murti of Baba. As I entered I looked at Baba and suddenly felt

as if he was looking at me and smiling, I turned around to see if there was

someone else behind me for whom Baba seemed to be beckoning, the devo-

tees behind me were closing their eyes and praying , they did not seem to be

the ones, I looked back again it seemed to me as if Baba's eyes were with full

of love and affection, looking at this defeated child of his, that was the mo-

ment when my tremendous faith in my Baba began it was 6 years back , I

THE DREAMS TRAIN

(Dreams Of Saibanisa after Undergoing Bypass Surgery on 17-5-1996)

Compiled by Saibandhu Raghu Raman Satulury

28-01-1997:

Sai appeared as a saintly person and uttered thought provoking words as fol-

lows:

1. If you desire a peaceful life, look at those innocent kids born and reared

in the hutments. Turn around will happen the day you relinquish the dirt

from your heart and good days start pouring in.

2. Enmity is not good as it will find way to the next life too. Peace of mind

is deprived and the very purpose of life gets lost.

Life without peace of mind is rudderless.

went through a lot but kept my faith in my Baba.

I was then in a phase when anything that could go wrong went wrong. I went through sickness , separation

from my dear one , ill treatment and harassment. Through all that I called out for My Baba, quite often I

wondered why my Baba never hears my prayers and whether anyone could undergo a worse hell than me.

Now for the past 2 years I have settled in terms of peace of mind and I realize that Baba gave me much

much more than I had asked for. I truly believe that inspire of all hardships Baba is there for his devotees,

he waits for the right moment and Baba NEVER FAILS. I have realized that as I have gone through life

and request all Sai Devotees especially those who are in a phase where they find that they are losing Hope

to cling on to the greatest Saviour of Life Baba.

Baba is omnipresent, many small incidents have shown me that. I am a very staunch devotee of Baba, at

the moment I am in a stage where I need Baba's help the most. With so much of negativity around me

Baba is my only Beacon of Light. My fellow devotees, have Faith and Patience those are Baba's words, he

will carry each one of us across when our time comes. Surrender to the Almighty, he will take care of us,

because he knows best what is good for us.

Om Sri Sai Jaya Sai

Sai Devotee

One day as I was sitting in the drawing room, I experienced a wonderful fragrance filling across the room

at 2 o’clock in the afternoon when no one would pray in our building. The fragrance lingered on for quite

a while and I could feel Sai Baba’s presence in the room.

My daughter had given me a big picture of Baba. I spend hours in front of the photo. It gives me a lot of

peace.

(A RECORD OF THRILLING EXPERIENCES OF (LATE) DR.P.S.RAMASWAMI AN ARDENT DEVOTEE OF

SHRI SHIRDI SAI BABA)

AN APOSTLE OF SHRI SAI BABA

Early in the morning, when Guruji woke up, the fakir was not to be seen. It now

became clear to Guruji it was Baba Himself in disguise. Seeing the locks in posi-

tion, his sister too was now convinced about it. The lota was half-full with water.

Guruji preserved it carefully using it for special purposes as a penacea and always

kept it filled to the original level with Gangas water . The lady passed away shortly

after this occurrence making Guruji realise that it was to this that that fakir (Baba)

had cryptically referred.

Knowing him intimately as I did and having had the .privilege of sharing mutual

experiences of Baba's Lee/as with "him, I can say without hesitation that as a rule,

Guruji preffered to treasure them in his heart.

After his retirement in 1958, Guruji had a small house built with the amount of his

gratuity supplemented by the financial help of one or two rich devotees . The front-

hall with the verandah took up the major portion to serve as Baba's Mandir. It is this

that later came to be known as Shri Sai Baba Darbar at Jabalpur. It began drawing

devotees from neighboring places extending as far as Nepa Nagar, especially for

the Rama Navami and Samadhi Day celebrations. He had no issue. To the best of

my knowledge and belief, his relationship with his 'Sahadharmini' was platonic, his

energy being sublimated in the service of Baba and His devotees. Now he was

available at all times of day and night-to answer devotees' calls, and their atten-

dance for the 'aarthi' continued to increase overflowing onto the verandah and spill-

ing over into the street, especially on Thursdays. An hour in the afternoon, usually

between 2 pm and 3 pm on thursdays was reserved for the 'sumangaiis' I suhaasinis'

for the worship of Baba with 'haldi, kumkum'. The 'aarthi' later in the evening, at 5-

30 pm during October-March and 6.30 pm during April-Sept, was preceded by

'ashtothara puja' in which all, irrespective of caste or creed, took part. The prasad

consisting of a mixture of fried gram and parched rice from the Darbar along with

the 'Naivedya' offerings of devotees was distributed to all. It was a pleasant surprise

to find the majority belonging to the younger age-group. With more and more per-

sons from the business community evincing keen interest, the celebrations for

Rama Navami came to be on a grander scale than before extending to about to

week, with daily cultural programmes and bhajans by various groups. The main

day's procession with band and fireworks, covered a longer route along main roads,

and took 5-6 hours to return to the darbar. On the final day, virgins were fed on a mass scale and prasadam

distributed to the assembled devotees bringing the celebrations to a happy end.

The Mahasamadhi day's puja, a whole-night function, also attracted a good number of devotees elicting

from them a generous response in terms of service and contributions. Both the festivals were managed by a

Committee of responsible men freshly chosen every time. Guruji made it a Point not to handle the cash col-

lections personally. He also repeatedly turned requests for creating a kind of trust with monthly contribu-

tions of members on the ground that jt would inevitably lead to corruption of some kind and would detract

from the dedicated approach currently obtaining. As already indicated, he meticulously forbade the touch-

ing of his feet except by a select band of young devotees (of transparent sincerity).

At the first meeting, Guruji gave the impression of being quite on ordinary man not worth fussing about. I

have the feeling that he consciously took pains to go unnoticed, as it were. I myself must plead guilty to the

charge of thought like that in the beginning. Only to those who sought him out, attached themselves to him

and believed in him did he come to be known by occasional flashes as a chosen agent of Baba. Indeed, as

will be seen from examples to be set forth by and by, he communed with Baba and words emanating from

his lips especially at 'aarti' time had the sanction of Baba and found fulfilment. In other words, he was

gifted with Vaak Suddhi' and Baba evidently heard his prayers of intercession on behalf of those in trouble

of any kind. He asked such persons to write out their request/ailment on slips of paper which he placed be-

fore Baba where they remained till he deemed it necessary. For each of them he lighted an agarbothi daily

and prayed. In specific cases like an examination, interview, courtcase or surgery where obviously there

was Baba's sanction he offered special prayer for success by burning agarbathie's continuously for the du-

ration of each as notified in advance. With all his child like simplicity he was nobody's fool. He could eas-

ily see through cant and hypocrisy. To persons without faith he would not give Udhi but tell them to take it

from the receptacle kept before Baba. For the different ills of persons who sought his help he administered

Udhi to be taken with different vehicles (Anupan) like water, milk, honey etc. or Abhisheka theertham of

Baba's Padukas.

He also suggested special observances like fasts and complete reading of Satcharita within a week and dis-

tribution of sweets at the end for overcoming obstacles and achieving success. Where a person was not in a

position to carry out the suggestion, he himself offered to do so. In rare cases where obviously he did not

have Baba's approval, he decllined to interfere. Friday was the day of silence from 5 am to 5 pm and de-

voted to answering letters of outstation devotees in which he was prompt. No letter ever went unanswered.

He was never known to be so sick till the fag end of his life to be obliged to avoid Baba's 'aarthi' though he

was troubled with ailments incidental to the aging of the body. Only a week or two before the end of his

earthly sojourn, he returned from a visit to Nepanagar in response to the wished of the devotees of that

place He attained samadhi on 6.7.81 in his 87th year.

Glory be to Shri Shirdi Sai - Grace be to all

Story for this Week: “ The Hunter and the Doves”

This is another nice fable from the collection of Panchatantra. Once

upon a time, there was a flock of doves that flew in search of food. This

flock was led by their king. Once, it happened as such that the flock had

flown a long distance and all the doves got tired. The king of doves en-

couraged the doves to fly a little more. One of the doves picked up pace

and found some rice grains scattered under a banyan tree.

All the doves were happy to find the food and happily landed on the

ground. As soon as they began to eat the grains, a huge net fall over

them and all of them got trapped. The doves fluttered their wings des-

perately trying to come out, but it was of no avail. Just then, they saw

the hunter coming towards them. He appeared quite happy to find a

huge number of doves trapped inside the net. The whole flock was

frightened on seeing the fowler.

However, the king of doves was very intelligent and clever. He didn’t

loose his patience and devised a plan to come out from this adverse

situation. He advised to other doves,” In order to get free from the net

of this hunter, we should all fly up together clutching the net in our

beaks. There is strength in unity. We will decide our next course of ac-

tion later. Now, come on and let’s fly.”

Hearing to the king, each dove picked up a portion of the huge net and

they flew up together, carrying the net with them. The hunter was sur-

prised to see the birds flying, along with the huge net. He ran after the

T H E G L O R Y O F S H I R D I S A I

Page 9: Volume 2011-04

birds, shouting madly, but could not catch them. Soon, they flew high

over hills and valleys getting out of his sight.

When the king dove saw that the hunter had given up the chase, he

said to his friends, "Now we all have to get out of this net. A mouse

lives on the nearby hill. He is good friend of mine. Let's go to him for

his help." They flew to a hill near a city of temples where the mouse

lived.

When the mouse heard the loud noise of doves’ approach, he got

frightened and hid himself deeper into his hole. The King dove asked,

“Dear friend, I have come, the king dove. We’re in great difficulty.

Please come out and help us.” Hearing the voice of the king dove, the

mouse came out of his hole and saw the king dove and his friends

trapped in the net. The mouse said,” Oh! Who’s done all this to you? “

The king dove explained the whole story to the mouse. He told him

that they require mouse’s help to nibble the net and set them free.

The mouse immediately started nibbling the net around the king dove.

The king dove said,” No, dear. First set my followers free. A king

cannot keep his subjects in pain and enjoy the freedom for himself."

The mouse understood the king’s feelings and praised the king for his

nobleness. As per the king’s wish, the mouse nibbled at the portion of

the net and one by one all the doves got freed including the king

dove. All the doves were happy to get free. They thanked the mouse

for his effort and flew away together happily to their destination.

Moral: Strength lies in unity.

SPIRITUAL GEMS FROM SATCHARITA ~ CHAPTER 42 Contributed by: [email protected]

Baba's Passing Away

Previous Indication The readers up till now heard the stories of Baba's life. Let them now hear atten-

tively Baba's Passing away. Baba got a slight attack of fever on 28th September,

1918. The fever lasted for 2 or 3 days, but afterwards Baba gave up his food and

thereby He grew weaker and weaker. On the 17th day, i.e., Tuesday, the 15th Octo-

ber 1918, Baba left His mortal coil at about 2-30 p.m. (Vide Professor G.G. Narke's

letter, dated 5th November 1918, to Dadasaheb Khaparde, published in "Sai Leela"

magazine, Page 78, first year). Two years before this, i.e., in 1916, Baba gave an in-

dication of His Passing away, but nobody understood it then. It was as follows:- On

the Vijayadashmi (Dasara) day Baba at once got into a wild rage in the evening

when people were returning from 'Seemollanghan' (crossing the border or limits of

the village). Taking off His head-dress, kafni and langota etc., He tore them and

threw them in the Dhuni before Him. Fed by this offering, the fire in the Dhuni be-

gan to burn brighter and Baba shone still brighter. He stood there stark naked and

with His burning red eyes shouted - "You fellows, now have a look and decide fi-

nally whether I am a Moslem or a Hindu." Everybody was trembling with fear and

none dared to approach Baba. After some time Bhagoji Shinde, the leper devotee of

Baba, went boldly near Him and succeeded in tying a langota (waist-band) round

His waist and said - "Baba, what is all this? To-day is the Seemollanghan, i.e.,

Dasara Holiday." Baba striking the ground with His satka said - "This is my Seemol-

langhan (crossing the border)." Baba did not cool down till 11-00 p.m. and the peo-

ple doubted whether the chavadi procession would ever take place that night. After

an hour Baba resumed His normal condition and dressing Himself as usual attended

the chavadi procession as described before. By this incident Baba gave a suggestion

that Dasara was the proper time for Him to cross the border of life, but none under-

stood its meaning. Baba gave also another indication as follows:-

Sai Ram.

Dasara is the tenth day after Navaratri (9 nights) and Baba was indicating that

Vijaya Dasami (Vijaya means victory and Vijaya Dasami represents the victory over

the ego) was the right day to go beyond all dharmas and attributes (man, woman,

Hindu, Muslim etc.). Baba was always against any one fasting but He Himself gave

up food and allowed His body to waste away so that people have some reason to

console themselves and prepare themselves about Baba's shedding His physical

body. As indicated elsewhere, Baba was not limited to His physical body and is giv-

ing darshan even now to those in need.

Sai Ram.

Quintessence from Shri Sai Baba’s Philosophy (By Late Sri Bharam UmamaheswaraRao) ~ Contribution by "Shashank"[email protected], Mrs and Mr Anand

Chapter 35: The Wheel of Time and the Pangs of sorrow and Death

Continued from last issue

18. Do not brood over the death until you have thoroughly understood the nature of death. Know that the day the Atma leaves the body, the attachments towards your kith and kin will cease. Human life is impermanent. There is no need to grieve for the dead. Each one can at-tain his goal by proper discharge of his duties. If you do not become a servant of your body and its senses, if you do lead a simple life, if you do not get attached to caste and creed, body, form or its beauty, then you will have a peaceful death at the end.

19. Death means forgetting this life’s activities and merging the Jiva into Nature. Jivatma in you is imperishable but body is transient. Leaving the attachment to this body, merge your mind in divine thoughts, making your heart pure surrendering yourself to ParamaJyoti or Jeevana Jyothi or Adwaita Jyothi. Realize what death is. Once you understand the nature of death, you will not think of death. Soul is not the body and so one should not fear death.

20. To burn is the very nature of fire, and so is the nature of snow to cool. Similarly, it is only natural for every being born to die. Man should have the same attitude towards death as he has towards birth. Develop an attitude of equanimity towards both birth and death. Without worrying for death, be courageous, merger your divinity in Sadaananda Sthiti and be pre-pared to face the death.

21. Have faith and patience without fear and be steady to accept death happily. Try to earn dis-passion towards worldly affairs, surrender to almighty to get purity before death enters. Do this with devotion to God. Knowing the value of the life, try to liberate yourself by keeping away from the worldly pleasures. If you leave the responsibility of salvation of your Atma to your relatives or to Doctors, they will drench you in deep waters. At the time of death, none of these will pray for you or get you to remember God. Know this. That is why from now it-self be immersed in divine ecstasy.
