Oklahoma Road Middle School provides an envi-ronment of respect and

Department of Justice Internet Safety Forum to Address Protecting Children Online

A Department of Justice Internet safety forum entitled Innocence Stolen: Protecting Our Children Online will be held on

Wednesday, November 1, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. at Oklahoma Road Middle School, located at 6300 Oklahoma Road, Sykesville.

The forum is open to the public but is limited to adults only due to the sensitivity of the topics to be discussed.

The Innocence Stolen program is offered to school staff, parents, and community organizations to equip and empower them to a

ddress the many teachable moments that occur when accessing the Internet. Vincent DeVivo, Community Outreach Specialist from the

United States Attorney’s Office, District of MD, will give a 90-minute presentation reviewing the entire range of threats students face when

they go online. Topics will include the dark web, texting, Internet predators, and an array of Internet dangers of

which many parents are not aware. This forum will provide new information for parents on the dangers our

children are being exposed to on the Internet. We strongly encourage both parents to attend to learn more about how they can protect their

children when they go online.

Staying Well Please help your family stay safe from communicable diseases. The number one way to prevent the spread of communicable diseases is by practicing good hand washing. Bacteria and viruses are everywhere: on door-knobs, grocery cart handles, cell phones and anything else you can think of. Please wash your hands frequent-ly and remind your children to do the same. In addition, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. The mu-cous membranes on these areas are a poor barrier against germs. Please do not share water bottles or eating utensils. Keep yourself and your family well so you can enjoy the upcoming holidays!

November 13 -17 is American Education Week.

You are welcome to visit classes and observe your student as well as have lunch in our cafeteria with your student. Please review the week’s events to arrange the

appropriate time for your visit. ALL parent visitors must present a valid government issued ID to receive a visitor’s badge.

Please remember, the purpose for American Education Week is for parents to observe their student in the classroom setting. Chairs will be setup in designated areas of classrooms

for parents to set, observe, and not interact with students. Please keep in mind teachers will be working with our students and will

not be able to conference during visitation days.

Thank you to our wonderful book fair volunteers. We had a very successful sale. We will be purchasing STEM products for our students to use in the media center and in science classes with our profits. The SCORE Challenge (Student Collaboration of Research Exploration) event will be held at Shiloh Middle School on Friday, November 17th at 6:00 pm. We hope to continue to be successful; last year we had a team that placed second against 35 teams from 4 middle schools! There is still time for students to sign up for the Battle of the Books. December 1st is the deadline. This is a book-based competition where students compete in teams to answer questions relating to the content of a number of books. The competition will be held at Westminster High School on April 13th at 6:30 pm. We placed 1st and 3rd last year and plan on keeping our first place trophy again this year!
