Volume 2 Number 3 July 1967

THE EDITOR'S NOTES

The twenty-four pages of t h i s issue make i t the largest issue yet published. There are, however, too many blank spaces (sorry about t h a t ) , but your editor can only publish the data a v a i l a b l e . The long l i s t s of i n d i v i d u a l s without dates, name of spouse and issue can make boring reading, but i f they o f f e r a clue to a forebears i d e n t i t y they w i l l have served t h e i r purpose. I f you have data on any of the i n d i v i d u a l s l i s t e d please send i t to the e d i t o r f o r i n c l u s i o n i n the Clay Family Register.

As requested, we are supplying the following information on the purchase of copies of r'Genealogy of Joseph Peck and Some Related Families". The book i s a v a i l a b l e from the author, George Braden Roberts, 2853 Ontario Road, NW, Apt. 522, Washington, D. C. 20009, price $10.00. The editor's copy has been placed i n the Houston Public L i b r a r y .

Again we are Indebted to Robert Young Clay, our most p r o l i f i c contributor of data, f o r information on the book Adventures of Purse and Person", much of the V i r g i n i a marriages data and information regarding the Thomas Hart Clay B i b l e . Such cooperation i s sincerely appreciated by the e d i t o r and w i l l be appreciated by future generations of Clays.

The cemetery records furnished by Mrs Mantel Clay are among the most d i f f i c u l t to obtain. We appreciate her e f f o r t s and take t h i s opportunity to again ask that you f u r n i s h any such records you presently have or can obtain.

As we have written to several of you,it i s the editor's fondest hope that one day The Clay Family Quarterly w i l l be the most complete source book ava i l a b l e on a l l of the branches of the Clay family. This would be an impossible goal without the assistance of the members of the association and t h e i r w i l l i n g n e s to share t h e i r Clay data.

Writing about the family of Henry Clay, the statesman, editor Calvin Colton wrote, "The descendants of the o r i g i n a l V i r g i n i a stock, numerous and widely dispersed, many of which s t i l l reside i n V i r g i n i a and Kentucky, have branched so extensively^that t h e i r common o r i g i n i s scarcely recognized among themselves. The Works of Henry Clay" G. P. Putnam, New York 1904. Colonel James Edmond Saunders, himself a Clay descendant, w r i t i n g about the Clay family i n h i s "Early S e t t l e r s of Alabama" wrote the following i n 1899: " people who are poor and have no pride i n the past or hope i n the future seldom keep t h e i r family records c a r e f u l l y . " We would only question h i s use of the word poor i n t h i s connection and would rephrase the statement —people, r i c h or poor, who have no pride . Perhaps, together we can correct both statements.

"A History of the Middle New River Settlements and Contiguous T e r r i t o r y " David E. Johnston 1906 Huntington, W. Va.

This h i s t o r y contains a sketch on M i t c h e l l Clay 6-20 and h i s family, including a narration of an Indian attack, i n which two of the children, Bartley 7-24 and Tabitha 7-26, were massacred and a t h i r d c h i l d E zekiel 7-25 was captured to be l a t e r burned at the stake. M i t c h e l l ' s fourteen chil d r e n are l i s t e d as above ( i n the Peck genealogy).

"Adventures of Purse and Person- V i r g i n i a 1607-1625" Edited by Lash Jester i n col l a b o r a t i o n with Martha Woodroof Hiden 1956 Princeton U n i v e r s i t y Press

The sketch on Clay, p. 135-138, gives the lineage as follows, pointing out the variance from Mary Rogers Clay's genealogy (v. 1, p. 17) as being due to l a t e r revealed data. The data proving descent of Charles 3-4 i s the best we have seen.
