Dartnall had already admitted defeat, leaving the way open for the controversial Heron/Cannon bid to go through (see Eurotip- sheet, Dec.9th) when Bond stepped in with an extra 15 million pounds, allowing the manage ment group to raise its offer to 110 million pounds. Bond, owner of Australia's Channel Nine TV station, will get a 45% share in TESE's equity, the re- mainder going to Dartnall's team (10%) and clients of U.S. securities house Bear Stearns which raised the finance for the takeover. The TESE division includes film and video interests, 105 UK cinema sites, and the famous Elstree stu- dios, and earned 126 million pounds in the latest financial year. Dartnall says no policy changes are planned and the jobs of over 3,000 staff will be unaffected. Thorn EMI chief Sir Graham Wilkins, who put TESE up for sale earlier this year, says the outcome is a particular satisfactory one, es- peciallly in view of the company's "important role in the film and video industries in Britain and internationally." DAVE STEWARTMULTI -TALENTED ARTIST OF THE YEAR (RCA)When presented last week with the Eurotipsheet award for Multi -Talented Artist Of The Year 1985,Dave Stewart said: "thank you very much, I'm honoured, but I would like to share this award withmy other half". With those simple words Dave showed his gratitude to Annie Lennox, who ispresently travelling through Bali, resting her voice in preparation for yet another worldtour. This1986 tour will definitely bring The Eurythmics to Europe and will obviously result in extra pan-european media attention.

Dave Stewart has to be one of the mostprolific, busy and versatile artists around atthe moment, as composer, arranger, musi-cian and performer (in 1984 alone, he per-formed in 175 concerts on four continentswith Annie Lennox). And now, this year morethan before, also as producer for a string ofartists from the Ramones to Tom Petty toFeargal Sharkey. Dave therefore earns theaward for multi -talented artist of the year,for his wider accomplishments in theseother creative fields.

He scored a particularly noteworthy suc-cess with Sharkey's A Good Heart whichreached no. 1 in the UK and has this week ris-en to no. 6 in the European Hot 100. During1986 no less than 5 Dave Stewart producedalbums will be released including The Euryth-mics new one, Kiki Dee, Bob Dylan, FeargalSharkey and an album he is presentlyproducing (and co -writing) with Daryl Hall.

A converted church, now partly trans-formed into a recording studio and businessoffices for Stewart and Lennox, has also seenthe birth of many of his extra -curricular activi-ties. Dave now heads his own record com-pany, Anxious Music, recently installed in ahouseboat on Regent's Canal, London. Earli-er this year Stewart assisted Bob Dylan direct-ing two videos for the Empire Burlesque LP.

'Be Yourself Tonight', the Eurythmicslatest album, has to date sold 1.3 million in Eu-rope. The LP has already spawned three hitsingles and critically acclaimed videos inWould I Lie To You, There Must Be An Angel

and Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves. Eu-rythmics' versatility includes incorporatingmany different artists in their songs. ThereMust Be An Angel made use of legendarysoul music star in Stevie Wonder, by way of

an enchanting harmonica solo, while SistersAre Doin' It For Themselves features the soulqueen Aretha Franklin. The spectacular pair-ing of Lennox and Franklin with their soaringvocals was bound to be the success it was.Although the song deals with the positivemessage of women's ability and indepen-dence, the male half of Eurythmics is not ex-cluded. Dave Stewart can be seen in thevideo, energetically playing his guitar in asegment shot in England.

When discussing the name of the group,Eurythmics, Dave said it "sounded good. Italso described what we wanted to be - Euro-pean and rythmical."... (Thanks Dave! wewould love to use just that slogan for Eurotip-sheet this year).

RCA/ARIOLARIDING ON A WAVE OF HITSIn the midst of streamlining the new RCA/Ario-la international structure and the new mergerwith General Electric, the combined RCA/Ari-ola team is riding on a wave of internationalhits. Looking back to just five months of histo-ry the newly formed RCA/ARIOLA internation-al joint venture has every reason to be verysatisfied with their accomplishments in the Eu-ropean markets. Joe Kiener, VP internationalmarketing A&R says: "In the recent weeksand months we have enjoyed considerablesuccess throughout Europe with a substantialnumber of acts on the RCA, Arista, Ariola andHansa labels."

To mention just a few of RCA's acts withmajor 1985 successes: Eurythmics, Five Star,Hall & Oates, Nona Hendryx, Pointer Sisters,Rick Springfield and just recently breaking inEurope Starship and Mr. Mister, who bothachieved recent no. 1 singles in the U.S.

Greg Rogers, divisional director market-ing RCA/Ariola Records European regionaloffice, heartily agrees with Kiener's com-ments. And as he outlines: "I am extremelypleased with RCA/Ariola's marketing in Eu-rope. The 1985 success outlined by Joe givestestimony to RCA/Ariola's ability to move

swiftly and efficiently across the geopoliticaland musical borders of Europe. The newyear's resolve of the RCA/Ariola marketingorigination for 1986 is to consolidate andbuild on 1985 success and develop manymore artists from the ever increasing pool oftalent being brought to us by our A&R centresaround the world".

Arista accomplished a number of Europe-an home -runs with Aretha Franklin, DionneWarwick & Friends and the Thompson Twinsand above all with Whitney Houston, who isstorming -up the European charts after sellingmore than 2.5 million albums in the U.S. andhaving a no. 1 U.S. single hit.

The Berlin based Hansa label continuedwith their overwhelming pan-European suc-cess story of Modern Talking and just recentlywith Frank Farian's Far Corporation, breakingin many European markets after achieving aU.K. Top 10 chart position.

Kiener comments: "Under the worldwideumbrella of RCA/Ariola international, the bas-ic principle of creative independence of ourlabels clearly proves to be a key success fac-tor for us." He continues: "But besides all therewarding results coming from our own artistrosters we certainly cannot emphasizeenough the key role of our long-term licenseand distribution label partners Chrysalis, Is-land, Motown and Virgin, which have playedand definitely will continue to play a major role

for us in many European countries. Artists tobe mentioned among others are StevieWonder, Lionel Richie, Huey Lewis, Billy Joel,Go West, Midge Ure, Frankie Goes To Holly-wood, Propaganda, U2, Simple Minds, OMDand Sandra.

RCA/Ariola's outlook for '86 is equally op-timistic. On the RCA label Starship and Mr.Mister are already enjoying massive cross-over success with both acts doing extensiveTV and radio promotion tours throughout Eu-rope in January/February. Kiener says: "I'mconvinced Mr. Mister will develop into a majorinternational top selling album and single act- 1986 is going to be their year".

Barry Manilow who just recently signedwith RCA on a worldwide basis has recordedsome Italian and French song material alongwith an English language duet with MireilleMathieu to be released early in the year.

Another most exciting act is the recentRCA U.K. signing of a group named WAX,featuring Andrew Gold and Graham Gould -man. Arista will enjoy new January albumreleases of Jermaine Jackson and the AlanParsons Project.

Kiener's final prediction: "Also watch outfor one of our key signings on the rockin'Horse/Arista label in the U.K., the group LatinQuarter which already enjoyed considerable'85 album sales in Germany and which willmake it in a big way in '86".

TINA TURNERFEMALE ARTIST OF THE YEAR 1985 (Capitol)Everything that has ever been written about Tina Turner all points to one inevitable conclusion:never before has there been a lady in rock able to create such a relentless energy on stage, asDavid Bowie once put it: "Standing next to her is the hottest place in the universe. Her singingis like a kiss". The soul temptress who stunned the whole world by launching a new career in theEighties. And her comeback was an overwhelmimg one!

The Private Dancer album was one of the big-gest sellers in 1984 and its success stretchedinto 1985 by still topping all charts all over theworld. Until now it is the longest charting al-bum in the European Hot 100, reaching its78th week to date! In total the LP spend 27weeks in the Top 10 and another 23 in theTop 30. Total European sales exceed the 4million mark. The album has reached plati-num or multi -platinum status all over theworld. And the assorted singles from PrivateDancer (Let's Stay Together, What's Love GotTo Do With It, Better Be Good To Me, PrivateDancer and / Can't Stand The Rain) haveearned even more heavy metal awards forTina. For Capitol she is the absolute Queen OfHeavy Metal.

For those who love statistics, here followsome more feats. Apart from having the Ion-

gest running LP, the Mad Max single WeDon't Need Another Hero, is still charted in its23rd week, making it the 4th longest chartingEuropean Top 10 single of this year. The sin-gle was only topped by Modern Talking's'You Can Win', Kool & The Gang's 'Cherish'and the Eurythmics' Angell The Mad Maxsoundtrack climbed up to a highest positionof 16 in its 11th week, making it the 3rd mostsuccessful OST of the year (after Beverly HillsCop and Chess). And to top it all off, the'Hero' single was the fastest jumping single inthe European Airplay Top 50. Straight after itsentry at 47 it hit no.1 in its second week.

Her activities in '84 only seemed to be aprelude of what was to come in 1985. Apartfrom doing a highly successful European tour(stunning the audiences with guest appear-ances by David Bowie and Bryan Adams),

she also performed in the Mad Max III - Be-yond Thunderdome movie together with MelGibson. Tina packs her electrifying energyinto her role as Aunt Entity, the lethal ruler ofa post -Apocalyptic city called Bartertowm.The soundtrack to the movie yielded the twohitsingles, We Don't Need Another Hero andOne Of The Living.

Recently she performed at the Live Aid tel-ecast, making an unforgettable impression onthe world audiences. And having just finishedher mammoth US tour, she is already on herway to Australasia to overwhelm yet anothercontinent.

It is amazing to see the enormous powerthe Queen Of Rock still has on younger au-diences who are not familiar with the older Ike& Tina material; even though she is well intoher forties, she is the definite proof that rockand roll is still alive and well. Her vocal poweris unbelievable and her live shows have an in-credible impact. Energy, power and vitality,these are the key words that apply to this dy-namic and versatile personality.

CAPITOL/EMIEXCITING PROSPECTS '86

"The surrciss we achieved with Tina Turner isphenomenal", says Heinz Henn, director Eu-ropean operations Capitol/EMI Ameri-ca/Manhattan. "Although the Private DancerLP was released in 1984 sales continued overinto '85 and we're now up to 4 million Europe-an sales. Especially the release of We Don'tNeed Another Hero made the album sales ofPrivate Dancer explode and that even while'Hero' is not included on the latter".

The CapitolfEMl America/Manhattangroup had one of the best years ever in thehistory of the international department. It hada record year with Tina Turner, Sun City, Di-ana Ross. Freddie Jackson, Katrina & TheWaves (first single Walking On Sunshine sell-ing worldwide 2 million copies and practicallyall over the world entering the charts), Bowie& Jagger (although the company obviouslydidn't make any profit out of that), DavidBowie (This Is Not America), Heart (a no.1 al-bum in the U.S. and already 2 million copiessold), Corey Hart, Joe Cocker and W.A.S.P.(a HM act selling over 200,000 copies inEurope).

"Success in this business can come veryquickly but can go down just as fast. It is

therefore very important to establish a goodbasis to continue being successful in the com-ing year. I'm very happy with the results thatthe Manhattan label has achieved, it has gonethrough a difficult year but it has now createda momentum with the results of Grace Jonesand Sun City and that is a very positivedevelopment."

1986 will be "unbelievable" with new al-bums scheduled for Joe Cocker, Dalbello(coming up with a new album produced byRupert Hine), Bob Seger (after a time lap ofalmost 4 years), a new David Bowie album(the soundtrack to the movie Labyrinth, forwhich Bowie wrote the music), Steve Miller(now Capitol worldwide), a new Tina Turneralbum and the first solo album from the ex -Stray Cats member Brian Setzer. "Our sharein the black label charts has increased enor-mously and also on that side we have excitingnew product from Maze Melba Moore andMelissa Morgan (with a track written byPrince)".

DIRE STRAITSALBUM SELLING ARTISTS OF THE YEAR (Vertigo)With the release of their 5th album Brothers In Arms, Dire Straits have virtually broken every possi-ble record. The Dire Dynasty reigned in the year 1985 and its influence will be felt long after. Itssales throughout Europe even surpassed the two big CBS successes Bruce Springsteen and Sadeand resulted in the longest running no 1 album on the European Hot 100.

Following the release of the album, theirfirst studio album for 2 years, the band em-barked on the most extensive tour the grouphas ever made; a massive 24 country, 220concerts world tour sponsored by PhilipsCompact Disc. The band is still in the middleof a 4 months European and US tour and thefinishing dates will be in Australia end ofMarch '86. In one and a half years the bandcovered each corner of the world and onstage the band breaks records as well; a stintat Wembley stadium in London made themthe first band to play that historic venue for 13consecutive nights.

But the band seems to be destined to be-

come the definite record breakers of '85. TheCD plant's order in Hannover to manufacturethe Brothers In Arms album on compact discwas the highest order ever received. The ini-tial run of 75,000 CDs was sold out immedi-ately and up to now European compact saleson the album exceed 300,000.

The album (incl. mc's) was no less suc- 'cessful and has already sold 3.4 million co-pies. Worldwide sales have reached the 8 mil-lion mark (LPs and mc's) and CD's are ap-proaching 5.3 million. They were also the firstact in history to release a single on compactdisc, the beautiful Scot -flavoured balladBrothers In Arms.

Not only are they the best selling CDartists ever, they also have the best sellingEuropean album of 1985. Entering at 15 inthe European Hot 100 the album moved up in3 weeks to the no. 1 spot, making it the fastestclimbing album of the year. And if that was notenough, it stayed 25 weeks at the no. 1 spot.This Dire Domination was only interrupted 3times (twice by Madonna and this week bySade).

The longest no. 1 runner, the fastest topclimber, the best selling album and CDgroup: it is clear that Dire Straits haveconquered the world and they will continueto do so. Phonogram International havealready launched 'The second phase ofthe Dire Straits campaign', to continuesupport and to ensure that the band breakseven more records.

It is 8 years since Mark Knopfler and theoriginal band members got their firstdemo -recordings - among them a songentitled Sultans Of Swing. The track hasbrought the group rapidly to worldwide ac-claim and the band have been able to delivercrafted and sophisticated quality albums inthe years after.

POLYGRAMOPTIMISTIC FORECAST FOR 1986

1985 was a good year for the Polygram groupwith the undisputable highlight of the break -though of Tears For Fears all over the world.The band has already sold 6 million albumsworldwide and is still a steady seller. Theother successes for the Polygram group in-clude Elton John, John Cougar Mellencamp,Bryan Ferry, John Parr, Dio, Olivia Newton -John and of course Dire Straits.

Looking back at '85, Aart Dalhuizen, ex-ecutive vice-president Polygram International,is more than satisfied. As he comments:"It was a fantastic year and I can only lookinto 1986 with full confidence. It is no secretthat we have had hard times, but these arenow definitely over and we now haveestablished a stable and broad basis to lookinto a bright '86."

Dalhuizen was responsible for signing thedistribution and licensing deal with A&M,which brought the company the successes ofSting, Supertramp, Bryan Adams and thenevi talent Suzanne Vega and Dalhuizen is"more than satisfied" with the deal. Also Poly-gram related product fared well like The Cure,Fine Young Cannibals, James Last (backcatalogue keeps on selling), Opus, Shakatak,Style Council, Level 42 and Lloyd Cole. Thecompany also continued the success it had inthe past with its extended heavy metal rosterand bands like Scorpions, Kiss, Deep Purpleand Bon Jovi achieved very healthy sales.

Looking into 1986 several interesting newprojects will come up like new albums forFrankie Miller, Def Leppard, Animotion andthe further growth of the Aussie band INXS. "Ihave also a lot of confidence in baby acts likeVitamin Z and Zerra 1 and the share of localproduct is increasing with recent exampleslike Nana Mouskouri and Johnny Hallyday.

Early January the international A&Rdepartments from both Phonogram Int, aswell as Polydor Int. will be moving to Londonfrom their former headquarters Baarn andHamburg. Dalhuizen: "All in all we're back inbusiness again, the troubles are over andPolygram is more than ready for '86."

BEVERLEY HILLS COPSOUNDTRACK OF THE YEAR (MCA)The popular American comedian Eddie Murphy starring as Axel Foley is chased by his own col-leagues at the beginning of the Beverley Hills Cop movie. A wild and chaotic pursuit, with carscrashing and parts of the city L.A. turning into pandemonium. This lively beginning is supportedby the exciting sound of Glenn Frey's The Heat Is On and it turned out to be Frey's biggest worldsmash after the demise of the Eagles.

It was also one of the tracks appearing on thesoundtrack to Beverley Hills Cop, an albumthat reached in Europe sales of approximately550,000. In the U.S the soundtrack notchedup 7 weeks at no. 1 and obtained doubleplatinum. Together with Chess and Mad Max,Beverley Hills Cop was in the race for theaward Soundtrack Of The Year and was chos-en as it yielded the biggest number of singlehits. The album resulted in major hit singlesfor Frey, Harold Faltermeyer with the in-

strumental theme Axel F, Patty Labelle, thePointer Sisters and Junior.

Not only was the Beverley Hills sound-track a good platform for the re -launch ofGlenn Frey it also meant the final break-through of the German musician/producer/arranger Harold Faltermeyer. Faltermeyerwrote the entire underscore, 3 instrumentals(Shout Out/Discovery and Axel F.) and TheHeat Is On. In the past Faltermeyer workedwith Giorgio Moroder on the Alan Parker film

Midnight Express and had his first hit in 1979with the Donna Summer track Bad Girls.Faltermeyer is now an established artist (hewas recently involved in doing some produc-tions for Laura Branigan and Rod Stewart)and Axel F. was a Top 5 hit in Europe andeven stayed 9 weeks in the European Top 10.It hit the no. 1 spot in Holland and Ireland, wasno. 2 in Germany, U.K. and Switzerland andhad further Top 10 positions in Belgium, Den-mark and Sweden.

From the very beginning is was clear thatthe Beverley Hills Cop LP was not just anothersoundtrack, but was a really good collectionof strong pop/dance songs. MCA's marketingcampaign was based on a theme of "the hitssoundtrack" and all adds and merchandisingcarried this slogan and listed the individualsingle titles.

It is interesting to note that in most territo-ries both the Glenn Frey and Axel F. singlesbroke prior to the movie opening. There is no

MCAA TOTAL ENTERTAINMENT COMPANY1985 was one of the most successful years onrecord for MCA and its artists. In the US plati-num albums were obtained for New Edition,Night Ranger and Tom Petty and for the 2soundtracks Beverley Hills Cop and MiamiVice (tripple platinum).

Major international breakthroughs havebeen achieved with Glenn Frey, Ready ForThe World and Colonel Abrams. Further tothat MCA has established their 2 U.K.signings Nik Kershaw and Kim Wilde.Another act with no previous internationalsuccess has already shown signs of comingthrough: The Damned.

Stuart Watson, international director ofMCA, is very happy looking back at '85:"When you see 6 MCA signings in theAustralian charts, 4 in the German charts and4 in the Japanese, all at the same time, youknow you have arrived".

Looking at the coming year MCA has a lotof trust in the Texas raised Charlie Sexton,whose European tour comes off in January.From the U.K. comes Cactus World News,another exciting signing.

"It is no longer necessary for an artist withinternational potential to break in the UK orUS before sales can be achieved in Europe.It is a question of recognizing the potentialand marketing the artist properly," accordingto Watson. "Working together with WEA, anartist orientated company like ourselves, wehave learnt to restrict our priorities and as aresult are breaking artists. Being a total enter-tainment company involved in cable televi-sion and movies we are able to draw ourresources together to the benefit of ourartists."

MADONNASINGLES SELLING ARTIST OF THE YEAR (SIRE)Madonna Louise Ciccone - the hottest star since the days of Marilyn Monroe. If one artist dominat-ed the media in 1985 it was certainly Madonna; she was a favourite subject for gossip columns,look -a -like Madonnas popped up all over the world and radio stations and discos endlessly playedall the different Madonna singles. Some have doubted her musical qualities, although many, afterseeing her perform at Live -Aid and those that were lucky enough to catch her in the Virgin Tour,have to admit she is not a mere fashion doll: she knows exactly what she wants and is able to findthe right balance between her image and her music.

1985 is marked as the year when the Madon-na mania was infecting Europe in every possi-ble way. She collected no less than six Euro-pean Top 10 singles of which 2 went to no. 1and she still had 2 others in the Top 30. TheLike A Virgin album yielded 5 hit singles andshe scored another 2 with her contributions tothe Vision Quest soundtrack (on Geffen). Thisobviously makes her the artist with the mostcharted hit singles in 1 year.

Like A Virgin, the first single, went to no.1and stayed there for 5 consecutive weeks andMaterial Girl, the follow-up, reached a highestposition of no. 6 in the European Hot 100,staying for 4 weeks in the Top 10. But the realcontagiousness began on August 23th whenInto The Groove (an original b -side of Angel)entered the UK charts at 4, which was thehighest debuting single for any female artist inthe history of the English charts and it wasalso WEA's fastest selling single in the last 5years. One week later 'Groove' jumped to thetop (in its 2nd week!) and the re-released Holi-day followed at 2.

Also in Europe Madonna's records weredominating the charts. 'Groove' even went tono. 1 in the Hot 100 and Gambler, Crazy ForYou (the 2 Vision Quest singles) and DressYou Up all entered Top 10. The other singleswere 'less' successful. Angel and Holidayreached highest positions of 14 and 31 in theHot 100 respectively.

You want us to go on? On the album frontshe also reached spectacular numbers, theVirgin album sold well over 2 million copies inEurope and over 7 million worldwide.The world belongs to Madonna and its inhabi-tants can only patiently wait and see what hernext move will be.

TALKING HEADSARTIST OF THE YEAR (AUDIO/VISUAL) (EMI)All who have seen Talking Head's Road To Nowhere cannot fail to be stunned by the sheer visualbrilliance of the superbly compiled, surrealistic video. The ever-present running legs motif is inter-spersed with a comic summary of life, from birth to old age, together with a powerful Dali-esquevision of semi -madness and fantasy.

The video highlights the interest of each individual band member in films as a form of media.Beyond some experience in editing videos, David Byrne has always been fascinated by films andis currently involved in a full-length feature, True Stories. Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth areworking on a soundtrack for a different production.

The making of their videos, just as thedesigning of their record sleeves, is insepara-ble from the groups conception of their musicas an art form. The cover of Little Creatures,for example, shows an original piece of art-work painted by the rev. Howard Finster (a re-ligious leader from Georgia who paints pic-tures with an esoteric significance). Similarly,various paintings owned by the group wereused as covers for their singles, hence illus-trating the strong visual connection betweentheir music and various forms of artwork.

Road To Nowhere is by no means the onlyexample of their highly creative synergy be-tween their recordings and ideas. One of themost succesful commercial concert films,Stop Making Sense, was last year released,directed by Jonathan Demme. It received the-National Society of Film critics award for bestdocumentary of 1984. Byrne said of the film:"the visual elements in the staging, thecostumes and the music, it seemed to be aculmination of sorts."

On the record side of things, the TalkingHeads album was one of the most commer-cial LP's they've ever released. It marked adramatic change of style. Where they were

formerly involved in the mixing of Africandance rhythms with that of urban funk, theband has now shifted to a more traditionalway of songwriting. Their 7th LP has madethem the least predictable band in today'spopmusic. Little Creatures contains very ac-cesible pop melodies and even some C&Wmaterial. As Byrne put it: "The album is abunch of nice songs. Maybe I've gone thelong way around and come to accept almostthe conventional song structure as a validway of working'. Continued on Page 21

PHIL COLLINSUBIQUITOUS ARTIST OF THE YEAR (WEA INT.)There are many reasons to name Phil Collins artist of the year in 1985 but because of all his diverseactivities throughout 1985, the description 'ubiquitous' seemed to be the most suitable. Applyingthis word to Phil Collins, there is no doubt that it fits him particularly well. The man is not only awork-aholic but also omni-present, as exemplified at the Live Aid telecast when Phil performed inthe same show live on both sides of the Atlantic. If 1985 is the year of the many facets of his crea-tive abilities, 1986 could even top that.

In the past year Phil's most importantproject was undoubtedly his solo album NoJacket Required which was released early inthe year and immediately stormed up all theinternational charts. In 3 weeks up to no 1. inthe Hot 100 and staying there for 12 consecu-tive weeks! And the LP is still charted after 43weeks. At almost the same time as the firstsingle of the album (Sussudio) took off, hisduet with E, W & F member Philip Bailey,Easy Lover, also became an instant pop radioadd. In no weeks time it became a world-widesmash filling the dance floors. It was followedby his production of the long awaited EricClapton album, an extensive solo tourthroughout the world with 100! concerts(including the 2 Live Aid performances), ashort production for an Adam Ant single andthe recording of yet another smash filmsoundtrack for White Nights (Separate Lives)which reached no. 1 in the US and is currentlyhappening in Europe.

The 'Jacket' LP spawned three hits,including Sussudio (highest position in theHot 100 of 4), One More Night (highestposition 3) and Take Me Home (53).

However Collins was not only active in theworld of music; he pursued his acting careerby playing a leading role in one of the

At the same time Kate Bush, Marillionand Katrina & The Waves all achieved newlevels of success throughout Europe.

Alongside established acts such as PaulMcCartney, Tina Turner and Queen, our mar-keting ambitions for 1986 will be to further es-calate these successes and extend our effortsworldwide with emerging artists such as PetShop Boys, Sigue Sigue Sputnik and CoreyHart."

Last but not least since October Phil haslocked himself up with his Genesis partnersMike Rutherford and Tony Banks in order torecord the 15th Genesis LP due out in '86. Hewill be finishing the Genesis album by mid -

February and in the meantime he has foundtime to produce a Howard Jones single andplay on Paul McCartney's newest album,both due out soon. In March and April Phil willthen produce a new Eric Clapton LP followedby a massive -production world-wide Genesistour including many European performances.To top it all off, he may find a week to recorda new Miami Vice episode. WEA'85-'86, AN EXCEPTIONAL YEAR

"1985 has been an exceptional year for WEAInternational", says Jurgen Otterstein, mar-keting director WEA Europe, "though I canfull heartedly speak for WEA Europe only, I

During the taping of the new Genesis album, Phil Collins took a short break to receive the 1985Artist Of The Year award from Music Box presenter Edwina Lawrie. Eurotipsheet publisher TheoRoos points to one of the several European Hot 100 top positions Collins achieved during 85.

STINGDEBUT ALBUM OF THE YEAR (A&M)One of the most exciting solo albums that have come out this year and one that crossed the rigidborders between pop and jazz is 'The Dream Of The Blue Turtles' by the charming ex -Policesinger Sting. He has grouped together renowned jazz musicians like drummer Omar Hakim(Weather Report), bass player DerryII Jones (Miles Davis group), the great Branford Marsalis onsax, keyboard player Kenny Kirkland and backing vocals by Dolette McDonald and Janice Pen-darvis. The subsequent LP contains a wide variety of different musical styles, injecting new andricher elements into pop music.

The album easily crosses the barriers be-tween music types and according to the artist,"there has to be cross-pollenation so I deli-berately used musicians from a differentgenre on this record. What we ended up withis not a jazz record at all, nor is it easily classifi-able as rock 'n' roll. It doesn't have a label be-cause labels are destructive."

From the Sinatra-esque ballad Moon OverBourbon Street, the hypnotic and seductiveWe Work The Black Seem, to the Caribbeantinged Love Is The Seventh Wave and thelatest single Russians, the plea to humanityand peace, all is done distinctively well andonly confirms Sting's status as one of the bestcontemporary solo -artists in the pop field.

Sting is not just the ex -Police bassist, whosuddenly tries on his own; he is an artist in hisown right, an artist who has something to telland with his own personal message. Mediapeople were excited watching the Parisshows at the Mogador Theatre (which tookplace just before the official release date ofthe album): rave reviews, 'here's an artist whotried to do something different', 'here's an ar-tist who is not afraid to experiment!'

The audience response followed immedi-ately and the album smashed into the Europe-an Hot 100 at 29. The album moved into theTop 10 in 3 weeks and needed only 2 moreweeks to go to the number 2 spot. And now21 weeks later, the album is still in the Top10!. The LP is close to a million in Europe, ithas reached platinum in Holland, gold in Italy,and it is almost gold status in all the other Eu-

ropean countries.The album has yielded 4 hit singles so far,

including If You Love Somebody Set ThemFree, Love Is The Seventh Wave, FortressAround Your Heart and Russians, the latter onits way to becoming the most successful effortso far. A&M Records was from the beginningconvinced about the sales potential of the ar-tist and carried out an extensive organizedcampaign launching Sting as an individualsolo artist with a very good quality record.With regards to the 'Russians' track, everyEuropean country had a translation of the lyr-ics on the sleeve cover and the same market-ing device was applied to the video, with allthe versions being subtitled. Especially withan artist like Sting, lyrics are very importantand these translations really helped in tran-scending Sting's views.

Apart from all his touring and recordingactivities Sting is also very involved in buildinga career as an actor. After starring as thegladiator in the sci-fi 'Dune' he recently per-formed in the Fred Schepise 'Plenty', along-side actress Meryl Streep and popsingerTracey Ullman. Sting and his band will also beseen next year in the music feature film 'BringOn The Night', a full-length movie directed byMichael Apted ('Coalminer's Daughter'),which chronicles the formation, the early re-hearsals and the initial concert appearencesin Paris.

A very talented and stricly unique artistwho has given us some of the best music ofthis year.

A&M1986: AN EVEN BETTER YEAR!

The major event for A&M records in 1985 wasobviously the change of distribution partner.After a relationship of 8 years with CBS, A&Mwent into a new partnership with Polygram.And as Russ Curry, director of Europeanoperations, states: "We are very satisfied withthe new relation. The relation with CBS wasgood, the one with Polygram is even better".

1985 was a year of many highlights for thecompany. Bryan Adams made his majorbreakthrough in the US and everywhere elseand the tour with Tina Turner obviouslyhelped a lot in establishing him as a majorartist in Europe.

The company had considerable successwith the Supertramp album, the first albumwithout Roger Hodgson and it confoundedthe critics by being extremely good and suc-cessful. Total European sales approach aquarter of a million and the band is planninga tour from January till March next year. Thecompany further reached success with thelaunch of a new artist by the name ofSuzanne Vega. A very exciting singer/song-writer in the folk tradition and many critics la-beled her the new Joni Mitchell. Curry himselfis very satisfied about the results on her debutalbum and believes "she is the definite proofof the A&M policy of developing artists fromscratch". Vega will be coming back foranother tour through Europe. Other A&M suc-cesses include Chaz Jankel with his chart top-ping single in France entitled No. 1, RogerHodgson's first solo album and Jim Diamondwho was very successful particularly in theSouthern European market.

"The biggest excitement however forA&M was Sting's solo album, an album thathas done very well everywhere and has al-ready sold just under a million copies", asCurry enthuses, "and the interesting thingabout Sting is where ever he had hit singleshe also had an enormous album success. Wedeveloped Sting as a solo artist in his ownright from the beginning".

"1986 will be an even better year, wehave new LPs by Jeffrey Osborne, Chris DeBurgh, Roger Hodgson, .38 Special andBryan Adams. New signings like ThrashingDoves (a UK signing) and the Americansinger/songwriter Marty Jones will bring A&Mto even higher levels of success".

The album con-tinues their melodic and solid way of songwrit-ing and funky dance tunes like Torture (thenew single, due out dec. 27), These Thingsand I Cringed are other standouts.An album that deserves to do better.

The Sound - In The Hothouse (Statik)After 3 albums for WEA and 2 for Statik, TheSound is still a cult band. This new double livealbum captures the band where they are best:on stage. Recorded at the Marquee it featuresSound classics like Winning, Skeletons andother spellbinding and melancholic tracks likeBurning Part Of Me and Total Recall. The LPgives a good indication of ,what the band iscapable of during their exciting live gigs.

Many European radio stations have adifferent programming during the weeks ofChristmas and have fixed playlists. In the firstissue of 1986 however, we will print the Top 10lists of a lot of stations, either in the form of anoverview of their best played singles in '85 orthe personal preference lists of ourcorrespondents.

Apart from the boom of seasonal singles,not many new records are being released andthis is obviously also reflected in our EuropeanHot 100. Due to static nature of Europeanplaylists this week, it is therefore not surprisingto see so few entries in the European AirplayTop 50. Nevertheless, there is a new no. 1; thedomination of A -Ha (8 consecutive weeks atno. 1) is broken this week by Elton John andNikita is now best played single all overEurope.

Feargal Sharkey's A Good Heart at no. 4and Whitney Houston is also new in the Top10 airplay. With a gain of 10 places for SavingAll My Love For You, Whitney Houston hasone of the biggest moving singles this weekon airplay level and it is to be expected thatthe heavy airplay will continue the week afterChristmas. Other good moves for Sting,Madonna's Dress You Up, Cock Robin andthe new Bronski Beat.

In the Hot 100 A -Ha cannot be removedfrom the top and here the difference with EltonJohn is still quite large. While The Sun AlwaysShines On TV has just been released as thefollow-up, Take On Me is still in its 5th week thebest selling single in Europe. Wham! movesup one place to 2 and Madonna never seemsto be tired of proving she is the best sellingsingles artist in Europe; the 5th single fromLike A Virgin, Dress You Up climbs up another3 places and is already at no. 6.

While the album of Sun City is highest al -:um entry this week, the Sun City single isa so the first newcomer in the Top 10 and with

For 25 years. TV executives,light entertainment producers andjournalists from all over the worldhave gathered at the Golden Rose.A more recent tradition assemblesat the same time all the leadingacts of today's popular music forthe recording of a Rock TV Specialof world stature IMMC will present6 upcoming international artists toappear alongside the major inter-national pop/rock stars in this Euro-vision TV broadcast. The show willbe produced by BBC's MichaelHurll.

The Golden Rose is in itself aunique concentration of artists, TVproducers and trade journalists in-terested in popular music and themedia. European Music Report(EMR) is the publishing companyof Eurotipsheet and has just goneinto partnership with Billboard.EMR is also involved in various ra-dio and television programmesand is now organising internationalconferences. By organising in

parallel with the Golden Rose, theInternational Music & Media Con-ference with all other interestedparties, particularly the Europeanradios, Montreux will become, asof May 1986, the world's capital ofthe music media meetings.

An international Music videofestival, both clip and longform,with a distinguished internationaljury will be an integral part of theevent, on which the awards will bepresented in the Rock TV broad-cast. There will be an open market-place for international companies

to present new professional CDequipment, computer technology,programme supplies as well asother media related articles.

The mushrooming of private ra-dio stations in many Europeancountries and the growth of musictelevision channels are creatingnew demands and new opportuni-ties. The programme and sales in-crease of music videos and the in-ternational breakthrough of manyEuropean artists will all be an in-tegral part of the discussions. Theneed is clearly felt for an interna-tional meeting place where the roleof music in today's media land-scape can be assessed. Radioand television programmers andproducers, record industry execu-tives, music video artists andproducers, music publishers,programme distributors and jour-nalists will all make contact at theIMMC.

The IMMC will take place in theMontreux Maison des Congresfrom Thursday, May 8 to Saturday,May 10. Apart from the internation-al conference sessions, attendeeswill not only be able to see theopen screening of the music videocompetition, but also to attend thenormal Golden Rose screening ofinternational television program-mes. The participants will be ableto attend the tapings of the pop -stars at the Montreux Casino onWednesday (7), Thursday (8) andbe part of the live 3 -hour GoldenRose Rock TV special, includingthe video award ceremonies andthe presentation of new emergingartists taking place on the Saturday(11). There will also be live concertpresentations of new talents or-ganised by various internationalrecord companies in differentMontreux locations each evening.

At the end of what seems to havebeen the shortest year ever, therehave been very few negativeevents in the record industry thankGod. It's been wonderful to seewhat Band Aid has done for Ethio-pia raising millions of pounds, andthe Live Aid concert must surelyhave been the highlight of the lastdecade, let alone the year. TheUSA for Africa also helped to raisemillions of much needed Dollarstoo. On the other charity frontsthere was the No. 1 record whichraised money for the relatives ofthe Bradford football disaster, andthe record to raise funds forresearch into Aids, That's WhatFriends Are For. Finally, althoughnot actually raising money, but theactual thoughts behind the SunCity record also show the Worldwhat the record industry can dowhen it actually works together.

It's been great to see new actssuch as Whitney Houston, D.C. Leeand Pet Shop Boys breakingthrough with huge hits. It's also

been good to see Feargal Sharkeyfinally making it this year in a bigway. Congratulations to the lovelyladies of Amazulu, who have beenknocking on the door for sometime now, and finally scored withtwo top twenty hits this year. Like-wise, Coolnotes who also had twobig top twenty hits during 1985,they also seen to have been knock-ing on that door for a long time too.UK Soul music has become bigbusiness this year, with acts suchas Five Star, Coolnotes, LW5,

Loose Ends, Jaki Graham & DavidGrant & 52nd Street all doing well,and showing that Soul Music reallyis big business.

It's also been good to see offthe wall hits such as Sophia Ge-orge, Smiley Culture, Concept andDougie Fresh, and especially as allof these records were mentionedin the old London Calling well be-fore they actually charted. Finallyfor 1986 look out for these newnames, Twenty Flight Rockers, TheMen They Couldn't Hang, SigueSigue Sputnik and Chakk, all ofwhom could be big business. Seeyou in the New Year.

UK VIDEO MARKETCONSIDERABLE UPTURN NEEDED

Britain's video industry will have tosell 30 million pounds' worth ofvideocassettes in the last threemonths of this year if earnings areto match the 1984 total of just un-der 80 million pounds. Thisemerges from the first set of statis-tics to be officially released by theBritains Videogram Assn. Accord-ing to the BVA, distributors' sales inthe first nine months of 1985 havereached 48 million pounds, at anaverage unit value of just over 23pounds. That's 15% down on lastyear but with a string of block-busters - "Gremlins", "Beverly HillsCop", "Ghostbusters" - on releasefor Christmas UK video companiesare hoping a sustained market up-turn is under way.

Considerable growth will beneeded to match the peak year of1983, when domestic video saleswere worth 89 million pounds on

BVA figures. The organisationwarns that its statistics are not 100% accurate because not all videodistributors are BVA members, andnot all BVA members supply dataregularly, so the true totals couldbe somewhat higher.

It also notes that distributors'sales bear little relation to retailerearnings. Although the number ofUK retailers has fallen since 1983,they are buying more copies ofleading titles and renting themmore frequently, the Assn. days. Allin all they "appear to do well".

Retailers' sales and rentals ofpre-recorded videotapes amount-ed to 485 million pounds in 1984on latest estimates, or over fivetimes the value of distributor'ssales, and, says the BVA, "there isevery indication that this gap isgrowing:'

Carol Aid, a 4 -hour carol singingspectacular, is to take place on De-cember 19th in London's Heavendisco. The event, jointly organizedby Music Box and Richard Bran-son Virgin's group who haveprovided the venue, is beingstaged to raise money for Band-Aid. The concert will be an eveningof carols and Christmas songssung by a choir and backed by Eu-rope's top session musicians.These include (o.a.) Phil Lynot,Madness, Chris de Burgh, Ian

Dury, John Parr, Smiley Cultureand the Flying Pickets.

There will be raffles and auc-tions on the night and all the pro-ceeds will go towards Band-Aid.Charles Levison, chief executive ofMusic Box said that, "Music Box isproud to be contributing to theBand-Aid project". He adds that heis "confident that with the help andsupport of so many good peoplewe can raise a substantial contri-bution for the relief of famine inAfrica."

Welcome to our last albums guide of this year.Sade closes the year 1985 with a no. 1 albumand this is the 3rd time that a lady is on top ofthe Hot 100. Tina Turner opened the year witha no. 1 album (for 1 week) and Sade (Dia-mond Life, 4 weeks at no. 1) and Madonna (2weeks) followed in her footsteps. The airplayon the Promise album continues and trackslike is It A Crime (her next single, to be out De-cember 27th), Jezebel and Tar Baby areamongst the fave tracks.

The Sting album went to no. 2 in its 7thweek and after wavering for many weeks inthe Top 5, it looked like the album was to leavethe Top 10. However, due to continued goodsales, especially the last few weeks, the LPjumps up again from 9 to 5. Further to that thealbum remained an irresistable pick for albumbased programmes. We are still getting verygood reports on Russians, We Work TheBlack Seam and Bourbon Street. Further tothat the 3 -track maxi single of Russians withGabriel's Message and the live version of /Burn For You seem to be very helpful in shap-ing up special features.

Some of our correspondentsraised the issue that the album would not lenditself easily for programming, but this can eas-ily be put aside, because the album is gettingplenty of airplay on European radio.

A very good move for Whitney Houston,due to good positions in the UK, Germanyand Holland the album moves into the Top 20

this week. The Arcadia album continues itsway to the top and with new positions in theBenelux, Sweden and Denmark, it moves upto 35. It is good to see Pete Townshend doingwell with his White City album, in its secondweek up to no. 40.

Atlantic Records just issued a compilationalbum of the best of Bad Company, entitled 10From 6. Especially upon hearing tracks likeCan't Get Enough, Bad Company and RunWith The Pack, one is reminded again what agood rock band they were in the earlySeventies.

The unsurpassed Malcolm McLaren justreleased his new album on Charisma/Virginentitled Swamp Thing. The LP is a collectionof musical pieces recorded between 1982and 1984 on the Duck Rock World Tour, mixedwith a number of totally new themes, ideasand the famous McLaren touch.

It is worth checking the soundtrack to themotion picture Letter To Breszhnev, includingtracks by Fine Young Cannibals (Don't AskMe To Choose - from their superb debut al-bum), the militant hit by Red Skins (Bring It

Perfect Beat) and tracks by Carmel and San-dy Shaw.

One album that certainly makes up for therather low release schedules the last fewweeks is the new Alan Parsons Project albumentitled Stereotomy. As usual all the 9 tracksare writen by Eric Woolfson and Alan Parsonsand apart from 3 instrumentals guest vocalistsinclude John Miles, Gary Brooker (on thewonderful track Limelights) and ChrisRainbow.

THE UNITED MUSIC STATES OF EUROPE(continued from page 1)increasingly recognized the effi-ciency of treating Europe as awhole in certain areas of their oper-ations. A major landmark in thisprocess occurred at 9 am. onMarch 9th, 1979 when CBS or-ganized simultaneous releasesthroughout Europe of the A&M Su-pertramp album, "Breakfast InAmerica". This co-ordinated mar-keting campaign was an enor-mous success - the album went onto sell 38 million albums - and it setthe pattern for many subsequentPan -European initiatives.

"Pan -European" - that is thebuzz word of the moment. But howrealistic are the predictions that weare moving towards the UnitedMusic States of Europe?

The advent of satellite broad-casting with multi -national foot-prints has provoked a great deal offanciful conjecture about the likeli-hood of standardizing musical cul-ture and the massive erosion of na-tional repertoire which may bethreatened. But the likelihood ofsuch a development is firmly re-jected by most informed observ-ers. In gazing at the potential ofsome complex pieces of hardwaresituated some 35,000 kilometersabove the equator, we shouldmake sure that we still have ourfeet firmly planted on the ground.

First of all look at the truedimensions of the situation. MusicBox predicts that it will be capableof reaching 10 million plus Europe-an homes by 1990. That's less than10% of households.

Secondly, it is one thing to bereceivable - quite another to getconsumers to switch to your chan-nel. And by 1990 the prospects arethat a proliferation of televisionchannels will be competing forviewer attention - and there aremany who believe that thecompetitors in this field will ignore,or play down, national repertoireat their peril.

Thirdly, what is by no meansclear is to what extent there is arelationship between the advent ofSky Channel and Music Box -which, together, are receivable inabout nine million homes - and therecent European increase in themarket share of internationalproduct. Much of this trend couldbe due to the mushroominggrowth of private FM radio stations- at least in some countries.

Siegfried Loch, president ofWEA Europe, puts the situation

into perspective: "Sky Channeland Music Box can exert influencein Benelux, Scandinavia, Switzer-land and Italy - but they are still arelatively minor force when com-pared with the entire output of Eu-ropean broadcasting. I think theprincipal reason for the strength ofinternational product in Europe isthe dramatic change of the musicitself since the mid -seventies.Much of the impetus for this camefrom the U.K. and it made a big im-pact on the U.S. and Europeanmarkets. What we cannot, ofcourse, measure is whether thisimpact would have been as greatin Europe if there had been nopan-European programming ofmusic videos.

"What is certain, however, isthat the emergence of this newcreative vitality from Britain coin-cided with a decline in the vitality ofproduct from other European mar-kets. The German new wave, whichhad an impact in 1981 and 1982,virtually disappeared in 1983 andthere have not been many majornew artists emerging from France,Italy, Holland or Scandinavia, ableto compete with Anglo-Americanproduct.'

Wilfried Jung, EMI director,Central Europe, acknowledgesthat international repertoire cur-rently dominates the Europeanmarketplace, but he believes thatnational repertoire will rally. "I holdfirmly to the view that Anglo-American repertoire will continueto hold a 50% European marketshare for the foreseeable future. I

believe that if satellite broadcast-ing, dominated by Anglo-American music, becomes in-creasingly influential in Europe,then the national broadcasters andthe national record companies willfight back by boosting local reper-toire. There are already signs insome countries that the statebroadcasting systems are payingmore attention to local repertoire.And it certainly makes very goodsense for the record companies -not merely from a chauvinisticpoint of view, nor simply from theaesthetic point of view of preserv-ing a wide variety of repertoire.There is a persuasive economicreason for maintaining productionof national repertoire - it is simplymore profitable."

Jung believes that the complexinter -relationship of the differentmusic cultures in Europe and the

enduring power of musical tradi-tions guarantee that the culturalfrontiers in Europe will bepreserved for ever.

Marcus Bicknell, marketingdirector of Music Box, is emphaticthat there is no desire on the part ofthe channel "to ram Anglo-Saxonrock 'n roll down the throats of con-tinental Europeans. There is agrowing tendency to try to see Eu-rope as one market, but such aconcept is only viable up to apoint. We are, in fact, doing moreand more local programming. Wecannot at present put local insertsinto our programme but we could,in certain countries, supply tapesof national interest which couldsupplant part of the regularprogramming:'

Bicknell acknowledges that aregularly occurring problem withpan-European transmissions isthat they can force the hands ofrecord companies in the matter ofreleasing policy. European mar-kets move at different speeds andit is not always in the interest in aparticular release because theprevious single by the same artistmay still be selling locally.

Wilfried Jung echoes this point:"We had a situation recently whenwe had, as a result of satellite play,to release Kate Bush's 'Cloudbust-ing' even though the previous sin-gle 'Running Up That Hill' was stillselling well."

Bicknell, a man with substantialrecord company experience inEurope, is well aware of thisproblem and says that Music Boxalways checks with the labelsbefore adding a clip to the rotationschedules.

Another factor militatingagainst harmonization of the Euro-pean market is the fact that differ-ent territories show markedly differ-ent responses even to internationalproduct. Loch cites the case ofSimply Red which has sold muchbetter in some continental marketsthan in others and Matt Bianco,whose sales in Germany exceedthose in the U.K. by more than100%.

This differential response to in-ternational product in Europe canbe the source of some headachesfor the record companies in thearea of transshipping. Over-production of the particular recordin a low-cost country can lead toheavy exports of the product to ahigh -cost country where demandis high. This will also happen whena satellite broadcast creates in-terest in a particular title in coun-tries where it is not yet released.Since a fundamental principle ofthe E.E.C. is the free flow ofproduct among member coun-tries, record companies can onlyguard against transshipping byharmonization of prices and byhaving product ready to meet thedemand as soon as it arises.

The future impact of cable andsatellite transmission on therecord -buying habits of the

European consumers has to beseen in the total broadcastingcontext - and broadcasting inEurope is in a state of turbulenttransition. Just consider some ofthese developments:* France's four -channel TDF-1

satellite is due to go into orbitnext summer carrying the coun-try's fifth and sixth TV channels;

* West Germany's TV satellite willalso be launched in 1986;

* Britain's BBC and ITV are con-sidering a joint TV operation fordelivery by satellite to cableoperators in Europe by 1987;

* A mufti -language TV channel,Europa TV, is being mulled bypublic service broadcasting sys-tems in Holland, Germany,Ireland, Italy and Portugal.

* The Societe Europeene deSatellites is negotiating a dealwith Ariane of France for thelaunch of a 16 -channel TV satel-lite in 1987;

* The 26 -nation European Tele-communications Satellite Or-ganization is studying the possi-bility of a 500 million dollars DBSproject with 18 TV channels forWestern Europe in the 1990s;

* The Scandinavian countries arediscussing a satellite project,Tele X, linking Norway, Sweden,Finland, Denmark and Icelandas a means of competing withprivate cable and satelliteoperations.

All of which adds up to the factthat public service broadcastingnow faces massive competitionfrom private, advertising -suppor-ted broadcasting and, one way oranother, because music is such avital part of programming, this isgoing to have all kinds of repercus-sions on the music industry.

Certainly there are strong signsthat the advertising industry be-lieves in pan-European marketingand that multi -national companiesare ready to find additional moneyto allocate to this area of advertis-ing. If this money is forthcoming,so that the new satellite and cableoperations can be commerciallyviable, the question is then, willthere be massive overkill in termsof music programming and will thiscause a backlash in the form ofdeclining sales of pre-recordedmusic?

Returning to that IFPI meetingin Geneva, it is appropriate to recallthe comment by one speaker thatto sustain profitability, record com-panies must look increasingly toderive a substantial part of their in-come from licensing theirprogramming to broadcasters. Hepointed out that music publishersderive 40% of their income fromperformances but record compa-nies are way behind and have apoor track record in this area.

Siegfried Loch takes up thispoint: "We tend to see everyoneusing our records and ourvideoclips as a possible businesspartner and everyone disseminat-ing our programming as a friend.

But we have to be on our guardand make sure we get properremuneration for the use of ourrepertoire, both radio andtelevision."

The IFPI is very concious of thisneed and has urged its membercompanies to develop a greaterawareness of their bargaining posi-tion vis-a-vis the programmingusers. According to a calculationby NVPI Video, the video divisionof the Dutch national group of theIFPI, the average production costper minute of an entertainment TVprogramme in Holland is about1,100 dollars. For the use of its

music videos, the Dutch record in-dustry is currently claiming just100 dollars per minute from the TVstations. And in other countries therates are even lower.

Says Siegfried Loch: "We aregoing to have to assert ourselvesvery firmly in this area upon whichwe shall find ourselves dependingfor an increasing proportion of ourincome. There is no doubt in mymind that we are going to be sell-

ing fewer records in future. The su-perstars will continue to prosperbut the catalogue repertoire willbecome increasingly eroded."

For the future, Anglo-Americanmusic will continue to exert a

powerful influence over the Euro-pean market - after all, English isthe official language of pop musicand studies show that at least halfthe adults in Europe understandEnglish well enough to watchEnglish -language television. How-ever national repertoire will con-tinue to flourish in Europe and oc-casionally, achieve internationalsuccess.

But there is one domographicprediction to which the recordcompanies of Europe must ad-dress themselves when consider-ing the pan-European market - andthat is that between now and theend of this century, the Europeanpopulation in the 15 to 25 agegroup is going to decline by morethan 22%, from 53.3 million to41.42 million. A sobering prog-nostication - and, even as I write,pan-European A&R and promotionare hard at work planning an all-out Granny Rock campaign.

SADETRENDSETTING ARTIST OF THE YEAR (Epic)With her strictly individual and distinctive style, Sade has changed some of the world's outlook.Both her music and her image have a certain elegance, intimate yet at a distance, cool but notclinical. And although everything Sade does is deliberately chosen there remains however an ele-ment of spontaneity that makes the ice melt. Her music was trendsetting, because it gave way toa re-evaluation of the softer elements of jazz music, putting them into the framework of pop. Trend-setting, because quality prevailed and Sade gave her unique version of sophistication, giving styleand grace a firm place in todays pop music.

With the release of her debut album DiamondLife Sade and her band were part of a newtrend in pop music, that of cool jazz. Herblend of moody and jazzy rhythms in a soulsetting, injected pop music with fresh new ele-ments and together with groups like Matt Bi-anco, Working Week and Animal Nightlifesultry sounds were suddenly the fashion inthe pop hitparades.

In the meantime no less than 8 million co-pies worldwide of the Diamond Life albumhave been sold and the Nigerian born Sadewas immediately established as one of thenew popstars of the Eighties. Her follow-up,Promise, came out this year and was a logicalcontinuation of Diamond Life. Again it fea-tured the sultry voice of Sade set against exot-ic and relaxed rhythms. Highlights such asJezebel, the Spanish atmosphere in Tar Babyand the truly epic style in Is It A Crime, all car-ry a certain simplicity, in melody and lyricsand are sung with such an intimacy andhonesty that prevents them from becomingbland coctail jazz.

From the onset the album started sellinglike crazy and straight after its release it en-tered the European Hot 100 Albums at no.

13, which is the 2nd highest album entry thisyear (topped only by Alan Parsons Projectand sharing the honour with Tears For Fears).But that was not all. Only in its 2nd week it hitTop 10 and again 3 weeks later it went to theno.1 spot of the Hot 100 breaking the longchain of no. l's of the Dire Straits album. Atthe same time the Diamond Life album kepton being charted and until now it is the 2ndlongest charted album ever, with the run of 72weeks. The Queen of Cool reigns the chartsall over the world and looking at her deter-mined and self-assured personality, she cer-tainly will continue to do.so. ....

BRUCE SPRINGSTEENMALE ARTIST OF THE YEAR (CBS)1985 has been a busy year for Springsteen. He has toured for over a year in the States, Canada,The Far East, and in Europe in the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Holland, Germany, Italy and France. Asa performer he is unsurpassable (the New York Times has called Springsteen the 'best rock per-former ever'). His live concerts and the fanatical intensity he brings to the stage are indeed legen-dary, his mastery of the crowd total. During his performance the audience is injected with en-thusiasm and spurred on by his ebullient energy. In an instant, they can be effectively silencedas the rock 'n' roller shares one of his personal experiences.

Springsteen's charisma stems from hishonest, simple attitude towards life. His fanscan readily identify with his values - those ofloving their hometown, their state, their free-dom. Dressed as he always is in his old jeansand T-shirt, he articulates the thoughts of thewhole crowd.

A further enhancing quality is Spring-steen's willingness to join in with the increas-ing surge of charity songs. He has taken partin Band Aid's We Are The World, sangTrapped, one of the best tracks on the USAFor Africa album and more recently featuredin the anti-apartheid Sun City.

Born In The USA has to date sold a stag-gering 16 million copies worldwide and 3.8million in Europe. It is the fourth best-selling al-bum of the past 10 years in the USA, toppedonly by Michael Jackson's Thriller, FleetwoodMac's Rumours and the OST Saturday NightFever. In Europe the LP was for 29 weeks inthe top 10 of the Hot 100 Albums. The Euro-pean tour caused a re -run on nearly all hisLP's (in the UK even his whole back cata-logue entered the charts). For 10 weeks this

year, Bruce had no less than four albums inthe Hot 100 (Born In The USA, The River,Darkness On The Edge Of Town and Born ToRun), joined for one week by a fifth LP,

Nebraska.With the release of the double A -sided sin-

gle My Hometown coupled with the seasonalsingle Santa Claus Is Coming To Town (a liverecording from '75) Sprinsteen has now col-lected 5 singles out of Born In The USA. Dur-ing almost the whole of 1985, Bruce had 2singles at a time overlapping with each otherin The Hot 100. Dancing In The Dark was outwith Cover Me, followed a month later byGlory Days and I'm On Fire/Born In The USA.

Besides being projected as the spokes-man of a new generation, having broughtback some of the values that were lost in theSeventies, Springsteen is still the best rock 'n'roller on the road.

CBS EUROPEBOOM OF MAJOR RELEASES IN '86

1985 was a good year for CBS Europe ac-cording to Bob Jamieson, vice-president mar-keting & sales Europe, mainly due to the greatsuccess of a number of local and internationalacts including Bruce Springsteen, Sade,Wham!, Jennifer Rush, Claudio Baglioni,Jean -Jacques Goldman, Paul Young, JulioIglesias and many more. 1986 will be anothergreat year with major releases from Streisand,Rolling Stones, Wham!, Eurogliders andmany more.

"The continued growth of Pan -Europeanmedia like Sky Channel and Music Box andthe development of local video exposure willhelp our artist development efforts", statesJamieson, and "CD's will be our greatestsales growth area".
