No Zone s of Control

The game is played on a 14" x 44"mapboard of the portion of the islandwhich contained all of the fighting be­tween August 7, 1942 and February,1943. variable, add the following "HiddenMovement" section to your game:

Hidden Movement

.At the beginning of his turn a playermay remove up to 48 attack factorsworth of troop counter s from the board.The positions of these Units are re­corded and on sub sequent turns theymay be "moved" by recording newpositions. The following restrictionsare placed on Hidden Movement:

Units may not become or remainhidden:

1. If they are clo ser to any enemyUnits than any other friendly units,

2.. If they are in the enemy's homecountry,

3. If they are in an enemy zone ofcontrol,

4. If they are within 4 squares of anenemy unit,

5. If they are in a city (thus airunits may not be hidden).

Hidden units who se situations do notmeet any of the above requirements atany time must immediately be placedon board.

Paratroop units landing unwittinglyon hidden units are automatically eli­minated.

Units may be removed from theboard only at the beginning of aplayer'sturn. They may be moved secretlyduring that turn with their new positionrecorded.

If Air Force units fly over hiddenunits, the hidden units must be placedon the board unless those units are inthe wood s.

Units at sea, of course, may not beused as hidden units.

Hidden units that find themselvessuddenly in enemy zones of controlmust be placed on the board and areforced to engage in combat in the usualmanner with all enemy units they findthemselves adjacent to.

Stalingrad has many possibilities tobecome one of the more complex A. H.wargames. Terence Zuber in his re­cent article, "Stalingrad Oversimpli­fied", pointed out many of the basicfaults, but did not give remedies formost of them.

With the following rule changesStalingrad can be greatly improved andmade more interesting.

1. Fir st and most important, usethe Bulge Battle Results Table.

2. On the first turn allow both sidesto place units next to the border, ignor­ing the doubling of Rus sian units behindriver lines.

3. How to win -- Russian conditionsremain the same. The Germans needa minimum of 100 points. They receive50 points for capturing Moscow, 30 forLeningrad, 20 for Stalingrad, 10 forArchangel (needed for Western sup­plies), 10 for Grozny, Maikop, andAstrakhan (all necessary for oil produc­tion), and 1 point for each other majorcity. To get these points the Germansmust control each city for one turn butnot all simultaneously. The Germanscan also win by eliminating all Russianfactors.

4. Industry -- The Russians have15 "factories". Seven units are placedon the cities within the Volga, Oka,Moscow triangle. The remaining unitsa re placed in Leningrad, Stalin grad,and the cities along the Donets River(Kursk, Kharkov, Stalino, Rostov,Dnepro Petrovsk, and Voroshilovgrad).The Russians can evacuate these fac­tories (2 per month) starting in August.To evacuate the units just remove themfrom the board. If all factories aresafely removed the Russian replace­ment rate goes up 2 factors per cityper month, but the Germans may cap­ture them just like other units. Anyblank counters will work as industrialunits.

Tactical tidbits: Never place threeBrkth Art. on the same square withinrange of enemy Ftr's. I strategicallybomb Arty. and airborne on principleif they're in escorting range of myFtr's. The best stack for Arty. in at­tack is two Arty. and one Inf. to takethe casualties. Blue should never takeAA-42 as it is not needed for defenseand it is impossible to get automaticvictory against. The best way to revi­talize a stalling offensive is to bringin a Brkth Arty. as replacements. Itis also handy for nipping off the spear­head of a menacing enemy offensive.Red should early gain the initiative andkeep it so Blue doe sn't have a chanceto discover how weak Red really is.Neither side should put too muchstrength in the Koufax Desert becauseit would become too tempting a targetfor Airborne troops across its supplylines. In Defense of Finland

The German defense of Finland forSTALINGRAD illustrated in this seriesof diagrams is designed to give the max­imum of delay with the possibility of acostly three to one exchange for theRussian at the end. The German placeshis 6th Reserve Panzer Corps and theRumanian Cavalry in Finland. Thereis a fifty-percent chance of snow forthe turn the Rus sian is able to leaveFinland, thus making possible furtherdelay. The 6-6-6 Armor Unit is usedin order to hold the maximum numberof Russian Units in Finland. If theRussian has left insufficient force inFinland, deploying the Finnish 3-3-4'sthe second turn gives the German op-

5. Air Power - - For the summermonths of 1941 the Germans have 8Luftwaffe units (Blitzkrieg SAC count­ers). These planes may be used untilDecember when plane production be­came more equal. When they attack aunit they eliminate zones of control(not over unit). All isolation rulesapply. In conjunction with attack fromthe front, this allows the Germans greatchances for encirclement, opening upnew strategical possibilities and moreclosely following the real campaign.

6. Sea Transpo,rt and InvasionBoth sides are allowed 2 invasions of4 attack factors in the Black Sea. In­vasions may land at any square. No seamovement is allowed in the Sea of Azovbecause it's too shallow. In additionto this the Germans may transport 2factors per month from Konigsberg toHelsinki.

I believe that these rules will makeStalingrad more enjoyable to most war­gaming fans by introducing new realismin a somewhat stale game. I also hopethat A. The Importance

of Fortresses in Bulgeby Jeff Martin

Myron Brundage's article in July '65is very interesting and helpful. But sofar no one has stressed the importanceof fortresses. The greatest weaknessthe Germans have is keeping an unin­terrupted supply route open. The bestway to throw the German advance to aslow crawl is to plot a fortress at everycrossroad possible. So what if the Ger­man surrounds and gets behind you. Hecan only go 7 squares before he himselfbecomes isolated. In order to keep hisdrive alive, these fortresses will haveto be eliminated. If he surrounds youfor the 6 turns until you're automatic­ally eliminated that's 6 turns his troopsin that area sit on their duffs doingnothing. Having to attack a 4-4 tripled(12) or an 8 (24) he is going to suffercasualties he can ill afford. He will al­so have to mass more troops in thatarea leaving other parts of the frontsparsely defended and open greaterpos sibilities for the Americans tocounterattack. In this manner the Ger­man will be running from one side ofthe front to the other with his advancemuch slower than he would like, andtime is what the Americans must gain.Having your forces tripled is a lot bet­ter than doubled. Don't wait until you'rein the fore st area s of Rochefort and

Marche for- a last ditch effort to holdbefore thinking of using fortresses.

You should especially take advantageof the fortress town of Clervaux andnever abandon it until fighting to thelast man. Also on the very 1st Ameri­can turn,a regiment should be sent toBastogne and kept there to build a for­tress because if you don't do it then itmay be impossible later on (and youknow how important Bastogne is).

I'm not saying this will work all thetime. The proper deployment of rein­forcements to back up the fortressesand in attacking at the right times, notto mention getting a break in the weatheralso has a lot to do with coming up witha victory. At lea st you'll get the sati s­faction, if nothing else, of seeing aworried look and not all smile s on theGerman Commander's face once in awhile.

Try Something Different with Bulge

I've never seen it mentioned in anyprevious issues so I thought I'd bringit up here myself. You'll have lots offun and I imagine it's possible you canincorporate this idea in the other AHgame s.

You get three players or teams to­gether with three Bulge games. Onetakes the Americans, one the Germans,and one becomes the judge. Now putup barriers so that none of the playingboards are in view of the others. Atthe beginning of the game each board hasthe American units set up as always.The Germans attack, then everyone ison his own.

The only time the opposing playerknows where his enemie's units are iswhen they are within 2 squares of hisunit.

This 2- square zone of sight appliesonly to those units that are stationary.In other words, it's possible for astationary unit to observe an enemyunit pas sing it but the moving unit can'tsight the stationary unit. The movingunits that go beyond the front line don'tknow where the enemy is until it comesinto the enemy's zone of control. Whenthis happens he must stop right thereand attack. When he does come to astop, any units in his zone of sight arereported to him and then can bring upmore units to help in the attack. It'sbe st to move one regiment at a time.On the fir st turn before the roll of thedie those units that are not in theAmerican's zone of sight, naturally,are not reported to him.

This is where the judge comes in.On his board is the set up of both play­ers as they really are. He keeps eachplayer informed of who is in their zoneof sight (only the number of regiments(1, 2, or 3) and from what division-

this information is always given as soonas a unit stops and before the roll of thedie; also after the roll when a retreatedunit come s in the zone of sight of theenemy). He sees that all moves arelegally made (that a moving unit comesto a stop when it comes into the zone ofcontrol of an enemy unit). And also asan impartial participant rolls the diefor both players.

For an optional rule when the weatherclears each side can send out recon­naissance flights, 2 each turn, and askthe judge if enemy troops are in anyarea of the board in any group of 5squares (any combination - straightline, circle, etc. as long as they areconnected to each other). A total of10 squares (2 groups of 5).

Since neither player (except thejudge)willknowwhere all his opponent'sunits are, it keeps both players continu­ally guessing and makes for mostexciting play. I must mention this­start playing early in the day. JeffMartin, 4349 North 49th St., Milwaukee,Wisconsin 53216.

Attack In the Ardennes ..

The accompanying chart shows quiteclearly that the Germans had mustereda superiority of strength on the battle­field. This numerical superiority wasnot decisive for a number of interestingreasons. First, there was the problemof movement. Although the Ardenneshad a fairly well developed road system,the Germans lacked the transportationwith which to exploit it. Many units werealso delayed due to the chaotic Germantransportation situation outside theArdennes. The third regiment of the560 VG division (the 1129) was stillstuck in Denmark on 16 December.Even if the Germans had been able tomuster more force it is doubtful thatthey could have used it. The road netand topography in the Ardenne s madethe deployment of large force s extreme­ly difficult. This, coupled with the badweather, rough terrain, untrained troopsand the need for secrecy, made the ac­tual German deployment a militarymasterpiece as it was.

Besides the administrative problemsthere were also tactical ones. Thecontroversy still raged in the Germanarmy as to whether or not Panzer divi­sions should lead the as sault or be heldin reserve until the infantry hadbreached the line. In the 6th PanzerArmy it was decided to hold back thePanzers until the Infantry divisions hadmade a hole in the line. This was ob­viously the wrong solution. This por-

tion of the line contained half of the U. S.strength in the Ardennes.. Against theequivalent of three divisions (9 regi­ments) the Germans sent a roughlyequal force. Only the 3rd parachute di­vision made a breakthrough and this hadto be assisted later in the day by the 1stSS Panzer division.

The 5th Panzer Army took a morepragmatic view of the situation. Theirsuccess against the US l06th divisionwas mainly due to the poor placementof that division (see chart). Furthersouth the Germans used armor in theirinitial assault, even though its effec­tiveness was diminished by the as yetuncrossed Our river. Here, in themost thinly held portion of the US line,the German success was won mostly bythe infantry of the 2nd Panze r and the560th and 26th Volksgrenadiers. Pan­zer Lehr was held in reserve becausethere was simply no room on the roadsfor its vehicles.

In the 7th Army area the US fore e swere a little stronger, and had on callpowerfw force s from the south. TheGermans were never able to obtain adecisive preponderance of force. Evenif they had, they had neither the armorwith which to exploit their advantage

nor the infantry with which to hold ontowhat they gained.

In spite of the shortcomings in theGerman assault, it might have succeed­ed. The factor that defeated the Ger­mans was the prompt Allied reaction,which will be the theme of my 3rd andconcluding article on the "Bulge."

"The Blitz tactic consisted of find­ing a weak position in an enemy's lineof defense called a 'Schwerpunkt' andattacking it heavily with an overwhelm­ing amount of armor and motorizedunits" -- from Jan. '66 article "TheBlitz Tactic".

Editor's Note: The above statementis a misconception I am told of theterm "Schwerpunkt", which I had inter­preted to mean, "Where the main attackshould come." To correct this ambi­gui ty I have chosen for publication thefollowing letter, which represents bestthe several letters I received on same.

Dear Mr. Brundage:I am fascinated with armored

warfare and I read just about all Ican about it so when the General(Jan. 66) came last month I eagerlyread your article. I wish to clashdirectly with you on one point; theSchwerpunkt. The author of Barba­ros sa The Rus sian-German Conflict1941 -45, states that "the Schwerpunkt"is a Blitzkrieg term, meaning "Spear­head", or the point of maximum con­centration. Also, according to myGerman-English Dictionary the word"Schwer" is defined as being hard,heavy, difficult, and strong. "Punkt"which was included under schwer wasdefined to be the center of gravity.

An interesting note on the Blitz­krieg was that, according to HeinzGuderian who was Germany's experton armored warfare, in his bookPanzer Leader, "During the winterof 1923-24 Lieutenant-Colonel vonBrauchitsch, who was later to beCommander-in-Chief of the Army,organized maneuvers to test the pos­sibilitie s of employing motorizedtroops in co-operation with aircraft.

The Blitzkrieg, although not 'ini­tiated by Germany was fully developedthere. In 1929, Guderian becameconvinced that tanks working on theirown could never achieve decisiveimportance. His hi storical studie s

which included British manuels onarmored fighting vehicles, and exer­cises carried out in England pur­suaded him that tanks would never beable to produce their full effect untilthe other weapons on whose supportthey must inevi tably rely were broughtup to their standard of speed andcross-country performance. In sucha formation of allarms, the tanksmust play the primary role, the otherweapons being subordinated to the re­quirements of the armor. It would,according to Guderian, be wrong toinclude tanks in infantry divisions.What was needed were the armoreddivisions which would include all thesupporting arms needed to allow thetanks to fight with full effect. A Critique on Non-War

Avalon Hill Gamesby Jared Johnson

In this article I would like to discusssome of the strengths and weaknessesof the non-war Avalon Hill games:

1. Management. (Rating-Excellent)The reason this game is not very popu­lar is because mostwargamers will notbuy it in the first place. However,those who do, usually find it to be atleast as good as, if not superior, tomany of the war game s. It offer s arefreshing change from any other game,and I would recommend that anyoneplanning to buy a non-war Avalon Hillgame, to put Management at the top hislist. Strengths: The game can be play­ed with four people, and is, in fact,bestwith four people. The secondguess­ing involved in making bids is closer tobeing pure skill than to being luck. Thetournament game provide s additionalchallenges and complications for thosedesiring them. Weakness: The gamesometime s tends to get boring when allbut two players have gone bankrupt, be­cause it can take forever for one of thetwo remaining players to drive the other

into bankruptcy. Solution _ set a timelimit, or us e all of the to:lrnament rule s.

2. Baseball Strategy. (Rating-Fair)Strengths: Excellent portrayal of actualbaseball managing; easily catches theinterest of avid sports fans. Weakness­es: There is little diversity of play,due to the fact that there are really onlysixteen combinations of pitches andswings. By the sixth or seventh inning,the game becomes boring and stereo­typed. Second guessing makes the gametoo much luck.

3. Football Strategy. (Rating-Good)Strengths and weaknesses are about thesame as for Baseball Strategy. Thereis a little more diversity of play.

4. Le Mans. (Rating - Excellent)Like Management, this game is in aclass all by itself, being completelydifferent from any other sports carracing game on the market. Strengths:May be played with a large group. Per­formance of all car s is different. Gamelength can be adjusted to players wishesby deciding how many laps to race. Thegame moves quickly and never becomesboring. Weaknesses: The game is toomuch luck. Certain cars don't stand achance against other car s. The latterproblem can be solved by requiring thefaster cars to make extra pitstops eachlap.

5. Dispatcher. (Rating-Very Good)Strengths: Players can make up theirown timetables to help them operatetheir trains. Weaknesses: There islittle interest in railroading as such.This game is the harde st of all AvalonHill games (perhaps excepting Blitz­krieg) to learn to play well; a real chal­lenge.

6. Verdict II. (Rating Good).Strengths: Again we find another gamethat is in a class all by itself, but thenmost AH games are. This game istruly unique. Prosecutor selects a case.Both the prosecutor the defender offersevidence to support their point of view,and each must determine by use of theactual "rules of evidence" whether ornot their opponent's information in ad­missable or inadmissable. Weakness:The game can only be played fifteentimes by the same two people, becausethe case books contain only fifteen dif­ferent cases. Solution - Avalon Hillcould sell additional case books, con­taining different cases.

7. Squander. (Rating - Very Poor)Don't squander your money on thisgame. Strengths: None. Weaknesses:Definitely does not measure up to theusual Avalon Hill standard that is ex­pected, despite the fact that it was notintended to be a "realistic all-skillgame". The unusual object of the game(the winner is the first person to lose)does not make up for the fact that it isbasically a boring, run-of-the-mill typeof game.

8. Nieuchess. (Rating - Very Good)Unfortunately this game has been dis­continued. Strengths: This is an un­complicated ver sion of the battle game s.The same manner and method of mov­ing, engaging in combat, etc. is em­ployed, but the game is simplified bythe fact that each pawn has the samecombat factor (one) and every pawnmoves the same number of squares eachturn. Also, there are no increasedterrain values. Weaknesses: Thereare no significant weaknesses, exceptperhaps, that the game is too simple.The player who moves second has aslight advantage.

AH's Critique on

Johnson's Crit iqueIt is always dangerous to "swear"

by a one-man critique such as the oneprinted above. However, it so typlifiedthe general comments and reactions toour games that we have received fromthe masses, that we felt duty bound toreproduce it here for your consumption(and argument. )

Our thoughts on the subject are asfollows: We, too, feel that Managementis one of our best games. But some­what contrary to Mr. Johnson's com­ment a two-player game can be mostexciting particularly when both playersare fighting off the bankruptcy court.From an economist's standpoint, how­ever, it is not too realistic a gamesince no one really wins because every­one ends up knee deep in proverbial redink. But as a game we feel it is a clas­sic. (It'll soonbe a collector's item be­cause we've only sold about 17 game s. )

We'll go along with Johnson's com­ments on Baseball. But he's way offbase on Football. Apparently he hasmissed the subtleties and pyschologicalaspects of this game which was ratedby Sports Illustrated, December 11,1961, as "the best football game everinvented." It's our best seller in sea­son.

We are agreeable on LeMans andDispatcher, the latter so good in ourmind that it is currently being revised... delivery date quite sometime in thefuture, however.

Verdict II can be played more oftenthan thought by Johnson; the "judge"element allows cases to be replayedseveral time s with different outcome shighly probable with each re-play. Inthis event, the game's owner accruesan advantage but this is also true withPassword, the fantastically populargame from Uncle Milty.

Johnson, you cut us to the quick withyour comments on $quander. The play­ing board is very pretty, though.

ed how to pronounce it we might havebeen able to sell it.

In summation, these non-battle titlescontribute only about 35% of total salesfor Avalon Hill. Thus they don't holdup as appealing as the battle titles withthe exception, of course, with FootballStrategy.

Who Really PlaysAvalon Hill Games? ?

"Nuts" play our games ... referringaffectionately to that hard-core 20% ofour mailing list who purchase 80% ofour games. These fanatics are dividedinto two age groups: 12 to 18 years and23 to 29. Median age for the first groupis 17, for the second group it is 25.What happened to the 19 to 22 yearolds? They discovered girls, is ourspeculation, and at 23 the novelty wearsoff so it's back to Avalon Hill gaming.

For the mo st part the younger theplayer the more easily he understandsthe instructions. According to our Reg­istration Card analysis, the older youare the more difficult it becomes tolearn new things. An occasional letterfrom a Phd will state that he and hiswife cannot under stand how to even getstarted, while the 12-year old's willcongratulate us on the "clearly present­ed rules. "

Most of you hear about the gamethrough a friend's recommendation andpurchase more often from a departmentstore, hobby center, book store, dis­count outlet and direct from Avalon Hillin that order.

The three most popular magazinesamong the game "nuts" are Life, Time,Boy's Life. As a group, military andegg-head magazines rate highly, also.The most popular TV shows change,naturally, from season to season. Cur­rent popular TV shows that you listmost popular are the news programs,combat stories, and Get Smart. Therewas quite a paradox, here, between thenews stories, serious in vein, andcomedy programs. You banjo playersliked Beverly Hillbillies.

For many years chess enthusiastshave met on the air-waves to play.Distance meant nothing and many is thestory of a monotonous lonely far-northvigil being relieved by a pleasant con­ver sation and game. Unlike playing bymail, the re sponse is just as rapid asa person can talk and the only require­ment, besides a radio license and equip­ment, is that each person have a play­ing board and men. The same processis applicable to Avalon Hill game s.

Depending on the time of day and theradio frequencies chosen distance isno factor. Certain frequencies arebest for "local" games involving indi­vidual s separated by only 4 or 5 hundredmiles. On the other hand, trans-con­tinental or international matches arejust as possible. Although Morse codecan be used, either a. m. or singlesideband voice transmission would bemost appropriate. The question of re­solving combat results does need ananswer. Neither the die or stock mar­ket approach is feasible. One method(using the Play-by-Mail Combat ResultsTable s) would be as follows:

1. The attacker name s the order ofbattles and the odds for each.

2. Group the attacks into 3's, whichmay leave a last group of only 1 or 2.

3. Starting with the defender, eachplayer alternately, digit for digit, statesa 4 digit number reading from left toright.

4. Multiply the se two number s to­gether (and don't forget to agree on theanswer. )

5. Starting from the right, the 4th,5th and 6th numbers are the equivalentof the stock market results for the 1st,2nd or 3rd attack of the group of threeor less.

This method will generate a seriesof random numbers which should be ap­propriate for resolving battles. Nordoes this process rely solelyon individ­ual play. Teams, general staffs, orwhat have you can readily participatesimply by getting together around aboard, transmitter and receiver. And,if you shouldn't be a "ham", maybe youhave an obliging friend who would bewilling to invite you over. Maybe he'deven appreciate being introduced toAvalon Hill games! To begin with Baseball Strategy has4 things which AH' s battle games willnever have. Absolute play balance, ashort game (45 minutes), lack of lucka s an important factor, and mo st im­portant, a tremendously exciting gameright down to the wire.

Probably the best thing about Base­ball Strategy is the statistics that youkeep for it. You match up the "units"with the players of your favorite teamand you're in business.

As to Strategy; everyone has theirown. Most players like to load theirlineup with sluggers and take theirchances with a poor defense. 1, my­self,. like to go with a perfect defenseand if I fall behind I will insert mysluggers in key positions. Pitching isthe key to every defense and you shoulduse great caution in picking your start­ers and relievers. The lefthanded Junkpitcher should be your prime starterand the lefthanded fast pitcher yourace reliever. Care should be taken togive your lineup as much speed aspossible as a fast man on second isoften worth more than two slow men onbase.

It's fun to read those ridiculous Op­ponents Wanted ads in the General; theamount and variety of chest-thumpingand per sonal horn-blowing is stagger­ing. Most of those who place ads seemto feel it necessary to brag and boastas loud as 50 words allow. The restof us chuckle, but chest-beating beforebattle has a sound historical basis; it'sbeen a human trait since the dawn oftime, and is found in many cultures.

(1) Consider the bouts of the Japa­nese Sumo wrestlers, with the tradi­tional pre -fight ritual dance - eachwrestler grunting, gesturing and actingout in detail exactly what mayhem hewould wreck upon the other.

(2) Or the great Zulu armies intheir prime, lining up on the battlefieldin full view of the enemy, to yell andpound on their shields for an extendedperiod before the charge.

1. After removing playing piece sfrom die-cut card, glue a backing sheetof heavy cardboard to the card therebymaking a holder.

2. Arrange pieces in your holderas follows:

(a) For games with initial place­ment of all pieces on the actual playingarea: In same order as on 'order ofbattle' sheets. Also as much as possi­ble arrangement across the board inthe same order.

(b) For games with staggeredorder of appearance: In order of ap­pearance and by 'order of battle' wrth­in each increment. It is of course onlynecessary to remove men currently inuse for a particular move. Once anincrement is 'on board' men can be in­tegrated with previous arrivals in onesequence.

3. Eliminated pieces are returnedto the trays.

4. Replace men after each turn tothe holder as in?

5. (Optional) On 'order of battle'sheet enter starting position above theline and terminal po sition below theline for each individual unit. Take in­itial positions from your opponent'sto your previous operations' sheets tothe extent applicable, then pick up initialpositions from order of appearancedata, and finally from preceding 'orderof battle' sheet. This procedure shouldgreatly reduce placement errors andinsure inclusion of eliminations (showby X on first move following elimina­tion) and after battle movement.

One of the problems of Midway isits surface battles. Yamato with eighthits still has a surface factor of 18. Toremedy this I propose using some ofthe Bismarck attributes. This article may be regarded' asrank here say against the art of "soak­ing-off"; however, anyone actuallyen­gaged in sending men into battle mustface such a situation as I describe.Obvious sacrifice in the form of suicidemissions have always been a part ofwarfare, but, in AH wargames, onefeels no compunction whatsoever atsending out 1- 6 odds or dropping a de­laying" shield" in the face of withdrawaland enemy pursuit. The next time youget yourself into a battle try this sug­gestion to really test your strategicskill :

(1) Assign values to units equal toan estimate of the number of men inthe unit (i. e. brigades = 10,000 men,regiment = 3,500 men, division - 18,000men).

(2) Keep a record of the units lost(even though returned to board as re­placements) and then total at end.

(3) Now simply multiply units lostby their value to see how many men youneeded to win (as compared to opponentslosses, etc.).

(4) This method can even be em­ployed in individual battles to estimatelosses from a seige, a blitz, etc.

(5) You could even establish a limitas to the number of men you could loseper game (once you've derived somestatistics on average losses, etc.)

Perhaps my suggestion is a little too"humanitarian" or "philosophic" to in­terest a real afficianado of wargaming,but it's a thought to consider if youreally want to maintain a high level ofrealism.
