Leadership and strategic direction
This is one of Batho Pele principles that often goes over-looked. It calls on managers at any level to admit when they are wrong. Owning your mistakes is your greatest oppor-tunity to learn and grow. Admitting fault the right way can make your institution stronger and your employees much more comfortable with failure. Admitting you are wrong is a sign of strength. It takes character and leadership to do it well. It also sets an example for your employees, creating a culture where they feel free to experiment and fail. That free-dom allows for greater creativity and quicker solutions when people make mistakes. Practice these five tips to help you own your mistakes in a way that strengthens you institution.
1.1.1Take ownership
As the leader, you are responsible for what goes on at your institution, so you need to own the problem and the solution. Commend employees who take own-ership of their mistakes as well. By showing respect and support for them, you create a culture that ad-dresses mistakes without blame. Taking responsibil-ity when things don’t work is more conducive for growth.
1.1.2 Be sincere
When you deliver an apology your audience will be look-ing for signs of a caned or stiff delivery, they will take them as signs that you don’t mean what you are say-ing. To win them over simply be yourself. Avoid going by a script because you will undercut the potential im-pact. Be honest in your own words and your delivery.
1.1.3 Lessons learnt
A good apology explains what happened and why. Start with why you made your original decision and the logic that led to the choice. Explain what you learnt and how that new information will inform how you move for-ward. With any mistake there is a way to prevent it from happening again. Even if the mistake was simple, you can improve your thought process so it does not hap-pen again. Sharing lessons will also show your employ-ees how to think about mistakes and move forward.
1.1.4 Make proactive changes
Talk is cheap, so people need to see that you will actually follow through. When you outline your plan for change, mention a step you have already taken towards those ends. The more specific the better. As long as you can explain how you are rectifying what went wrong and own it, then you will come across as a person in a position of strength.
1.1.5 End on a high note
When you talk of a mistake, acknowledge anyone who might have harmed in the process. Sometimes the harm is overt, but often it is more subtle, like when em-ployees invest hope and time in a project that fails. If anyone has been harmed, show empathy. But al-ways bring it back to what you learnt and how you plan to use this experience as an opportunity to grow. You want to end with a message of hope in every situation.

Pharmacy week
“Towards Quality Care Together” was the theme for Pharmacy week this year which was from 1 to 8 September. As the Church of Scotland Hospital Pharmacy, we were involved in some activities to promote this pharmacy week. These Activities included an in-service training to the Pharmacy personnel, educating patients at some of our clinics about diabetes and promoting pharmacy as a profession of choice to the high school students in our area.
Education on diabetes at the clinics
Clinics such as Gateway, Ethembeni, Mhlangana and Mbangweni were visited during the pharmacy week. Patients that were there were educated on what diabetes is, signs and symptoms, how to live with diabetes as well as other non-medicinal advices. Booklets on that information were also issued out to them at the end of the presentation.
Promoting Pharmacy to high school students
High schools in our area were visited to promote pharmacy as a profession and focus was on grade 11 and 12s. A power point presentation was used to impart some knowledge on what pharmacy is, what is required to be a pharmacist as well as job opportunities that come with the pharmacy degree. “One degree many opportunities.”
Fighting Diseases, Fighting Poverty, Giving HopeFighting Diseases, Fighting Poverty, Giving Hope 13
In-service training
The Church of Scotland Hospital pharmacy staff was educated on dosing and its importance as a step to achieving quality care of our patients. It is the backbone of the dispensing procedure and once it is done correctly together with some other things quality of patient care is improved.
Clinics projects
The pharmacist assistants in our various clinics were also doing their projects independent of the Hospital projects. They promoted health in various ways such as educating patients on the importance of checking expiry dates on medication as well as the correct ways of discarding the medication. Some also went to schools to promote hygiene and general health to school kids in every grade.
Of the many ideas we had for the pharmacy week, these were the ones that were done and even after the pharmacy week, we as the Church of Scotland Pharmacy personnel will still continue to promote quality care. “Towards Quality Care Together”.

Fighting Diseases, Fighting Poverty, Giving Hope
On the 4th and 5th December 2013 nutrition department and Mhlangana Clinic hosted a mal-nutrition awareness campaign at Mhlangana village, Msinga Dis-trict. Aim of the awareness was to assess, educate and evaluate the prevalence of malnutrition in children under five around uMsinga community. Mhlangana was a perfect platform for this awareness because COSH stats show that there a high admission number of SAM case that come from this area. There is a miscon-ception that Malnutrition hap-pens only when there is no food in the home. But the truth is you also find malnutrition in homes where there is always food. What is important is what kind of food do you eat, how you prepare/cook it and how much do you eat. This is especial important to children whose stomach can only take small volume of food at a time. As a caregiver you need to make sure the small amount of food they get can give them all the nourishment they need. There is no question
that from birth to six month only breast milk is best to do this. Regardless of the bad weather conditions the community of Mhlangana came out in numbers to attend the awareness which was held at Mhlangana community hall and Ophathi village (Mhlum-ba primary school). This showed great care for the children in the community and assured the hosts that the awareness was going to make a difference. Hundred and eight two children were assessed using the anthro-pometric measurements (weight and height) and nutrition status was determined using the Z-score and Mid Upper Arm Circumfer-ence (MUAC). About seventy two children were given vitamin A, 12 were referred for PEM scheme, five had Moderate Acute Malnu-trition (MAM) and only 1 Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) case was found. The SAM case was referred to the hospital for further assistance.Day started with prayer the pro-
gram director being Mr Zwane from DOT and Mr Sibisi from school health. The community was also given the health education on the following topic:- Definition of Malnutrition (un-derweight, stating and wasting), causes and prevention -infant and young child feeding,-RTHC and importance of Vitamin A ,-Immunization-PMTCT policy And also the pamphlets were given to the community as the educational material.Fruits were given to parcels and to mother/caregivers and children. Thanks to all COSH and PHC department for they generous donation and special thanks to COSH PRO, DOT, School health team, CCG’s, CCG facilitator Mhlangana Clinic and Mhlangana community as a whole for all their contributions that made the cam-paign a success. UMKHOSI WOSELWA 2013 GROUP
Umkhosi Woselwa is an annual event which is hosted by His Maj-esty the King Goodwill Zwelithini KaBhekuzulu during the month of December. The aim of this cul-tural event is to call all the males who have been circumcised by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health to attend so that they will be educated on the Zulu Culture and also to groom the males to become beings who will have hu-manity, care and who will protect other people.
All districts in KwaZulu-Natal where to mobilize a consolidated total number of 5 000 males who will attend this annual event. UMzinyathi had to submit 200 males which meant that uMsinga sub-district had to mobilize 50 males for the event.
This year’s event was hosted on the 14 – 18 December 2013. Msinga sub-district had 24 males to at-tend the event. There was one bus which was shared by Msinga

They were then tasked to go to the forest to get trees which they will use to build the kraal of the palace. They went out and came back with the trees and came back success-fully and they did build the kraal which was the activity of the day.
The second day which was 16 December 2013 they had to go the
stadium at the bottom of the pal-ace which had a stage and other services such as New Start, De-partment of Health, Department of Arts & Culture, Brothers for Life.
