C O U N T Y W I D E P R O J E C T S Did you know that the Shasta County 4-H Program offers around 18 countywide projects? Just as the name implies, these projects are open to all Shasta County 4-H members, regardless of their club. However, chances are that they don’t show up under your club’s list of available projects during enrollment. This is because your club’s project list only includes projects that are affiliated with your club and you probably need to complete a few extra steps to enroll. Find a project you like and want to enroll? Simply add the project leader’s club as a secondary club in the enrollment system and select the project from that club’s project list. Need help? Contact the 4-H office at 224-4900.

FOOTHILL - THINK PINK Foothill 4-H partnered with Tri Counties Bank in Palo Cedro to stuff the 2017 Think Pink Bags. These bags, loaded with breast cancer awareness and education material, will be handed out on Think Pink Day, October 19, 2017. The kids enjoyed helping their community with this important, lifesaving, event. Assistant Project Leader: Alice Miller In addition to the monthly project meetings, which begin in January, there will be two Saturday workshops. The first workshop is scheduled for March 24th and the second workshop is scheduled for June 9th. The March workshop will include a pizza party and the June workshop will include a BBQ. Both workshops will run from 10 AM to 3 PM and will have a $6 fee to cover the cost of food and drinks. This project is listed under the Happy Valley 4-H Club, but is open to any youth in the county. Purpose of California’s Delegation to the National 4-H Conference

3. Provide a system for an exchange of 4-H Youth Development programming ideas among states.

All delegates must not have represented California 4-H Youth Development at the National 4-H Conference within the past seven years, and will be at least 16 years of age on December 31, 2017

Tractor Supply Fundraiser Opportunity! Tractor Supply has a standing invitation for any 4-H clubs interested in holding a BBQ fundraiser at the Redding store each Saturday throughout the year. Please call three to four weeks in advance to schedule your weekend. Tractor Supply will furnish the barbeque and propane; your club brings the hot dogs, condiments, etc. Car washes or bake sales are also possibilities. Please call Tom or Carol to schedule your fundraiser or to learn more about how your club can help during the fall campaign. Leaders, please make sure you have your Food Safety Certification.

SAVE THE DATE!! THE 2018 CALIFORNIA STATE 4-H FIELD DAY will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at UC Davis. This is largest and most comprehensive educational event for 4-H youth members (age 9-19) and 4-H volunteer educators, California State 4-H Field Day has more than 1,500 participants annually. Since 2002, 4-H'ers from throughout the state have come together to connect and compete in this statewide event, held annually on the campus of the University of California, Davis. The goal of the event is to provide a culminating experience for 4-H members in their year-long 4-H education in public speaking, textiles, plant sciences, photography, interview skills, and entomology. 4-H CAMP ENTHUSIASTS – SAVE THE DATE! APRIL 6 – 8, 2018 The 2018 4-H Camping Conference will be held April 6 – 8, 2018 at Redwood Glen in the Santa Cruz Mountains between San Francisco and Santa Cruz. The Camping Conference is a biannual event which provides 4-H teen leaders, volunteers and staff the opportunity to improve their camping programs and meet others who are just as passionate about camp as they are. ORB Internet Café Training Online - Want to learn how to better use the CA 4-H Online Record Book? We will be hosting 2 online opportunities to learn ORB for staff, volunteers and youth members. This is the same training that we were offering live in counties over the past few years but now you can access from the comfort of your own home! Unable to attend either date? Not a problem, the training will be posted on our 4-H Youtube page following each training.

The live virtual trainings will take place on: Saturday, October 14, 2017 from 9am-noon Saturday, January 13, 2018 from 9am-noon Pre-registration is not necessary! Check out the flyer here for login instructions.

VOLUNTEERS UC ANR is aligning volunteer development requirements for all UC ANR programs statewide. Starting in 2017-18, volunteers in 4-H are required to complete between 1-3 hours of volunteer development courses annually which will be delivered online. Your UCCE 4-H Office will be sharing new enrollment procedures and training login information with you during the upcoming months, if they haven’t already. We hope you embrace this endeavor in the spirit in which it is intended: to instill a desire for life-long learning in youth. 4-H volunteers can best model life-long learning by continuing to gain new knowledge and insight themselves. Most importantly, 4-H volunteers should share their continuing education work with youth. Show them your certificates, talk about what you learned and how you hope to share that with them. In the coming months and years there will be many optional development opportunities for 4-H volunteers such as Club Leader Essentials, Chaperone training, Project Leader Essentials and much more.

EASTERN SHASTA COUNTY PROJECT PARTICIPATION Now that the details associated with the 2017 Inter-Mountain Fair are wrapping up I started to reflect on the number of youth touched by the fair through the market animal program as compared to the number of youth enrolled locally in 4-H. In 2017 over 97 youth exhibited and sold livestock at Inter-Mountain Fair (73 from eastern Shasta Co. and 24 from Big Valley). Youth selling at this fair has trended downward slightly in the last three years. Figure A outlines the total number of lots sold at the fair since 2008. Youth can participate in this program as 4-H, FFA, Grange or Independent exhibitors. Figure B outlines the number of lots marketed by 4-H, FFA and Independent exhibitors locally (because of their rare occurrence, Grange exhibitors are not included).

It is interesting to look at the importance of market animal projects. In the 2016/17 there were 134 youth participating in 4-H in eastern Shasta County. Of these 31 are primary members (recall they cannot participate in market animal projects by policy). About 73% of the 103 members that can participate in animal projects choose to do so. The 27% that do not participate in market animal projects participate in projects ranging from photography and quilting to shooting sports. In 2016/17 there were 111 4th Graders enrolled at Fall River and Burney Elementary Schools. Of those students, 34 of those youth were enrolled 4-H (approximately 33% of the 4th graders). These fourth graders also make up nearly 1/3 of the youth enrolled in the program (exclusive of primary members). The market animal projects are an important component of the 4-H program locally and are a valuable youth engagement opportunity. As population and demographics in the county change we need to understand the educational needs of local youth. In the fall of 2017 we will begin to recruit and hire a Youth Development Advisor for Shasta-Trinity-Tehama counties to help us develop strategies so we can continue to meet the needs of our local youth.
