Look for the Good in 2016! In the New Year, let’s resolve
To get less stressed, upset, anxious
About things over which we have no control.
Let’s have a narrower focus on our lives
Loving and helping our family and friends,
Making our community a better place to live,
To create peace and contentment.
In the New Year, let’s resolve
To pay less attention to depressing stories
On TV, in magazines and newspapers,
And to stop focusing on what we want
That we haven’t got, instead of appreciating
The many blessings we do have.
In the New Year let’s look for the good.
We may have to search
Through a mass of negative media,
But the good is there,
All around us.
I wish for you a New Year filled with good,
Engulfed in serenity and happiness!

A big thank you goes out to Mrs. Robinson’s 5th
grade class from St. Vincent de Paul School for visit-
ing The Living Center on December 18th, their last
day of school before Christmas break.
The children sang several Christmas songs from their
Christmas program they were preparing for that eve-
ning.
The children also gave the residents a presentation on
explorers they were studying in Social Studies class.
It was a great opportunity for the children to work on
their speaking skills...and we all learned a little some-
thing.

Christmas at HeartChristmas at HeartChristmas at HeartChristmas at Heart What a pleasure to greet Carolyn Thompson and her group of elves spreading the joy of Christmas! These
elves drove up to the front door to unload decorated Christmas trees for each of the residents to enjoy in
their apartment through the Holidays.
Everyone had fun picking out a delightful tree. Carolyn started her Christmas mission in 2007 when her
mother was a resident in a skilled nursing facility and other residents didn’t have a tree.
She started with ten trees in 2007 and now in 2015 she and her elves delivered over 600 decorate trees!
What a wonderful gesture of Christmas love!
Carolyn and her group of elves were on the front page of the Mount Vernon News the first week of De-
cember and then WSYX Channel 6 interviewed the group as well. They were pleased to be on Channel 6!
Thank you ladies for thinking of us during this holiday season. You are a Blessing to Everyone!

December 4th was a very special day at The
Living Center. Everyone knows how much
we love music. The program was the
“Christmas Sisters’ Musical.” A violin, pi-
ano and flute along with two talented sister
Jill Hawkins and Joanna Allen were the
magical ingredients for this enjoyable music.
Thank you ladies so very much for the won-
derful program.

New Year’s Traditions from Around the WorldNew Year’s Traditions from Around the WorldNew Year’s Traditions from Around the WorldNew Year’s Traditions from Around the World
Here are some examples of how other countries celebrate New
Year’s.
• In Greece on New Year’s Eve an onion is hung on the door
as a symbol of renewal and rebirth. In the morning, the
mother of each family wakes her children up by tapping them
on the head with the onion.
• In Turkey at midnight, salt is sprinkled on the doorsteps of
homes. This is said to bring peace and abundance.
• Russians write down a wish, burn it, and put it in a cham-
pagne glass. They must drink the champagne before the stoke of midnight on New Year’s Eve.
• In Estonia on New Year’s Day, people eat seven, nine or twelve times during the day, since those num-
bers are all lucky numbers. The more times they eat the more food they will be blessed with during the
year.
• In Denmark, neighbors smash plates on each other’s doorsteps, which is said to bring good luck and
friendship. The more pieces of plates people have on their doorsteps, the luckier they will be and more
friends they will have.
• Italians wear red underwear which is said to bring love, good luck and prosperity.
• In the Philippines, things having to do with circles are said to bring prosperity such as wearing polka
dots and eating circular-shaped fruits.

• Exercise. According to recent studies, people who exercise regularly report to be happier, calmer, and better equipped to
handle whatever the day decides to throw at them. Interestingly
enough, the study seemed to indicate these benefits were experi-
enced on a day-to-day basis, which means you can begin to ex-
perience them today by choosing to exercise just 20 minutes.
Pretty good New Year’s Resolution!
• Rest effectively. Rest is as essential to our bodies as food and air. Our bodies need to be refreshed on a daily basis and a
weekly basis. Don’t neglect to schedule rest. And don’t feel
guilty about it when you do!
• The Trivial Pursuit sold more than 20 million games in 1984.
• Each box of the original animal crackers had string, which was made so it could be hung on a Christmas
tree.
• You can’t sneeze with your eyes open.
• A praying mantis is the only insect that can turn its head.

On January 16th The Living Center hosted
the Pythians Sisters Christmas Luncheon.
The Pythians Sisters meet at The Living Cen-
ter monthly and asked if they could celebrate
Christmas here. Twenty ladies joined our
residents for lunch in the dining room and had
a wonderful time. Living Center resident and
Pythians Sister, Irene Fowler sat at the head
of the table and was thrilled about how many
of the ladies attended. Former resident,
Helen Sims, was able to come for the celebra-
tion as well.
Many of the ladies lingered through the after-
noon to tell stories and visit. We love the
sound of laughter in the building. They all
commented on how delicious the food was;
they especially enjoyed the raspberry sherbet
we served for dessert.
Happy New Year Ladies!

A special thank you to Chip and Colleen Wendt of Mount Vernon. Chip, a his-
tory teacher at Highland High School, purchased 20 poinsettias from Highland
High School’s National Honor Society and graciously gave them to The Living
Center. They looked so beautiful all over The Living Center. So, not only are
they helping the students of Highland High School they are also bringing
Christmas Cheer to us.

“Can you see the holiness in those things you take for granted ~ a paved road or a washing machine? If
you concentrate on finding what is good in every situation you will discover that your life will suddenly
be filled with gratitude, a feeling that nurtures the soul.”
