BATTLE OF THE BANDS The Welland Public Library proudly presents: Battle of the Bands: Shake the Shelves Tour In partnership with The Black Sheep Lounge, City of Welland, DSBN, and Seaway Mall Coming this summer to a library branch near YOU! Calling all Niagara bands! Come out to show off your skills, win great cash prizes, and shake the shelves! This three-part elimination-style competition aims to show- case the musical talents of Niagara residents aged 12- 25. Each competition date will also include performances by fan-favourite local musicians. Submissions will be accepted by email from May 14th until June 8th at [email protected]; all sub- missions must include a completed entry form. Entry forms will be available at wellandlibrary.ca (Forms & Publications – Forms – Shake the Shelves) and at all WPL branches starting May 11th. All submissions must include only one original song and one cover song. Professional recordings will not be accept- ed. Successful candidates will be contacted by June 15th. Do you remember the pools off East Main St. by the Welland Canal? This 1958 Welland Tribune article highlights Welland’s recreational assets of the time. “The City of Welland is well served in parks and recreation fa- cilities. With 51 acres of fine parks and one of the finest rose gardens in the province, the city has rightfully earned the name of “Rose City.” Augmenting the parks areas are the ten- nis courts, swimming pool, wading pool, and lighted and un- lighted baseball fields. Probably the greatest asset the City of Welland has, as far as recreational facilities are concerned, are the swimming and wading pools, situated off East Main St. along the Welland Canal...” “...Since the inception of the pools thousands of youngsters and adults have taken advantage of the opportunities to learn to swim and the art of life saving. TD SUMMER READING CLUB 2018 It’s almost that time of year again!
TD Summer Reading Club is Canada’s biggest bilingual summer reading program for kids of all ages, all interests, and all abili-ties. This free program is co-created and delivered by public libraries across Canada. It’s designed to in-spire kids to explore the fun of read-ing their way – the key to building a lifelong love of reading.
Kids (and their caregivers) can participate anytime at local public libraries across Canada. There are weekly prizes to encourage kids to keep reading, grand prizes for the finale, and plenty of activities and programs along the way.
And we haven’t forgotten the teens! Keep an eye out for teen-exclusive programs and activities throughout the summer.

WPL is thrilled to be embarking on a big project and we need YOU – our patrons – to make it a success! SUMMER PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTSThe Dueling Dames
Here’s your chance to witness live sword fighting! The Duel-ing Dames are a famous sword fighting duo and they’re bring-ing their fantastic children’s show to the Seaway Mall in part-nership with WPL this July.
The Dueling Dames show is live theatre that teaches history with hilarity, astounds with sword fighting skills, and is daring enough to bring young swashbucklers onstage.The Dueling Dames empower swashbucklers of all ages to become brave warriors against bullying.
The Dames will also be hosting a workshop at our Dia-mond Trail branch to teach children 8 years and older how to safely choreograph stage combat.
Family Painting Program
Feeling artistic? We will be running a family painting program at our Diamond Trail Branch throughout the summer. Follow along with famous YouTuber, The Art Sherpa, as she teaches you all the steps to impress with a painting of your own.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES FOR ALL AGESZumba is a fun way to exercise while dancing to the rhythm of Latin and international music. Yoga is a great way to relax and improve your concentration. This summer, WPL will be offering FREE Zumba and yoga classes for families and children of all ages, as well as classes exclusively for teens.
We’ll also be adding exciting new items to our col-lection – and they aren’t books or DVDs! Stay tuned to find out what new physical activity items you’ll soon be able to borrow with your library card.

Concerts on the Canal: Taylor Made (Taylor Swift tribute)

Welland Neighbourhood Project Block Parties Meet the Neighbours is a free, fun, and easy way to con-nect with people while enjoying Welland’s great green spaces.
