The signing of the agreement completes a two year period of planning, restoration, modification and negotiation that will ensure the Lark Quarry Dinosaur Stampede site will provide an amazing and vibrant experience for locals and visitors to enjoy for many years to come. The complex has been significantly upgraded with the construction of new building elements and the implementation of a state of the art audio and lighting system. Work has also included the implementation of a café and shop. Winton’s Mayor, Cr Butch Lenton, is pleased to have the AAOD telling the dinosaur story to the world as they are best equipped to do it both professionally and effectively in a manner that everyone understands. “We will use the skills of AAOD to improve the experience for visitors to Winton and the Central West,” said Cr Lenton. Cr Lenton thanked all those concerned with the project and remarked, “It is an exciting time to be involved in developing such major aspects in Outback Queensland.”

COMMUNITY NEWS

Winton Business and Tourism Association Presidents Report March 2016 During the 2015 year, WBTA operated on what would have to be considered the minimum of attendances at all of our meetings. To the dedicated few who supported and participated throughout the year, I offer my heart-felt and sincere thank you. Encouraging and obtaining business and community membership of WBTA is the greatest hurdle this organisation faces, and it is certainly a major dilemma for the future – how do you create and complete projects if there are no members, and how do you attract members if the organisation is just treading water. I personally contacted many Winton businesses in March/April of 2015, and from that a few new businesses became members, but we still cannot get them to contribute to the monthly meetings which is where the commitment is required.

Activities for 2015 have included: The Junior Bush Poetry Festival celebrated 20 years, incorporating the Performance Festival, the Little Swaggies written award and the new Video Competition, all of which were very successful. I know how much work Louise had on this occasion. It is becoming difficult to find enough volunteers within the community to assist with this event;

The Bronze Swagman Award for the year attracted fewer entries than in the past. This is a concerning trend and it could be said that the reasons for this are manyfold, not the least of which would be the amount of other competitions available and the ageing population of traditional bush poets;

WBTA successfully gained funding from Gambling Community Benefit Fund for a storage facility to be built on a leased area at the Men’s Shed enclosure. A local contractor is in the process of working towards a completion of this project within the first half of 2016;

The initiation of the Rusty Regan Project, an idea generated some years ago to acknowledge Bruce Forbes Simpson and his award winning poem “Vale Rusty Regan” by constructing a memorial on the grave of Russel Regan in the Winton Cemetery. Donations from poets and the community have started the funding required, and WBTA will be applying for further grants to assist with the finalisation of this event;

The establishment of the Bronze Swagman website has been moderately successful in its first year of operation attracting added book sales and donations to the Rusty Regan Project. It is hoped that this will continue to grow as we add some of the poetry entered into the competition to broaden its appeal. In closing, I would like to welcome everyone to a fresh new year, and look forward to increasing the profile of WBTA into the future for the benefit of the community. Graham Dean President WBTA
