When Luke Dalton comes home from college, the Michigan Technological University medical lab sciences major also comes “home” to work at the Bronson Athletic Club. “The members are amazing. You get to know them and get to talk to them—it’s like a second home,” he says.
The self-described man of many hats started as a lifeguard in 2012, and subsequently added shifts with the men’s locker room and service desk.“On the pool deck, you’re sitting and making sure everybody’s safe,” he explains. In the locker room, “you’re moving, moving, moving—making sure everybody has what they need.”
At M-Tech, where winters make Kalamazoo look more like Atlanta, he bought a snowboard and learned a new sport. “We
got over 300 inches of snow last year,” he says. “I’m really excited to get back at it
next year.” This summer, however, in addition to going to the beach, he also likes working out at the club.
Luke was born in Kalamazoo, but moved to South Carolina for a couple
of years before coming back to Michigan. When he was 12, his parents, twin sister and
two younger siblings also spent six months packed into a 40-foot trailer, traveling all over the country. “We home-schooled and just went around the U.S.,” he says. His most memorable stop? Seeing the giant trees in Northern California’s Redwood Forest. •

New Tri Training Scores a Win On June 28, eight members of the Bronson Athletic Club Triathlon Training group, ranging in age from their 20s to their 60s, competed in the Gull Lake Triathlon and emerged as winners—three even placing high in their age brackets. They are Scott Adrian, Lisa Ebenhoeh (second place), Alan LaReau, Rita LaReau (first place), William Moore, Michelle Newton (second place), Jen Omo and Wendy Sisk. Not competing in this race, but also training for other events were Jill Harris, Joyce Heward and nonmember Traci Peck.
At the race, as the last member of their group was finishing, the others went back out to run with her across the finish line, says their trainer, Michelle Dalton. “They all ran home together. It’s really what triathlon and sport should be about,” she explains. “I think they felt like a team, which was really great. It was very emotional watching them finish—I was so proud.” The new 12-week triathlon training program started in April. Under Dalton’s guidance, participants learn how to race, with an emphasis on swimming in open water, and making transitions from the pool to the bike and the bike to the road race.
The Gull Lake event was a sprint triathlon and featured a 500-yard swim, 10-mile bike ride and 5K run. For two women—both top finishers—it was their first triathlon. Both said they always had been intimidated by the swimming.
“I’ve always been athletic, but had stayed away from triathlons due to the swim,” says Lisa Ebenhoeh. “I was not much of a swimmer, and (Dalton’s) coaching got me through that part of the triathlon,” Rita LaReau agrees. “After years of being on my bucket list, the Tri Training class gave me the confidence to do my first Tri,” says Jill Harris.
“It was a really fun group to work with,” Dalton says. “The beautiful thing about triathloning, as long as you can swim and ride a bike, and run or even walk, any level of fitness is OK. And you see it out there, which is awesome. Every one of those differences is welcome and supported.”
