Summary
The SCA Office will be OPEN
on Saturday, February 2nd
from 9 AM—1 PM.
The SCA Office will be
CLOSED Monday, February
18th for President’s Day.
• Annual Assessments are due by Friday, February 15th
. See page 10 for
more informaon and amounts.
• Your Clubhouse key will work for the front door only un:l February 15th
and on that date, we’ll switch completely to fobs/cards. Each fob/card is a
$20 deposit and remember that you receive a $3 credit per returned old
Clubhouse key. And yes, you can write one check for everything (various
combina:ons of assessments, golf tags, cart permits, fob/card, key refund).
New Carpet Schedule?
will present a one-hour FREE* performance on
Sunday, February 24th
at 3:00 PM in the Clubhouse Ballroom.
This event is sponsored by the Social Club; More details on page 8.
*Dona:ons gratefully accepted
We don’t have a new carpet schedule as of the prin:ng date of this
newsleCer. Please go to our website, www.summerfield55.org, to see
updates under the Announcements sec:on of the homepage. If you don’t
have Internet access or a computer, chances are that your neighbor or
Summerfield friend does, so please ask them to check it for you. This is the
best way to communicate these last minutes changes. Coming to the
Clubhouse to see the calendar board isn’t prac:cal and that area may be
closed! With the poten:al sub-flooring challenges throughout the upstairs,
there may be :mes when an area is completely closed and unavailable.
Please respect the signs and cau:on tape! We might need groups to move
around last minute and we are so sorry about the schedule changes. If you
have ac:vi:es planned in February, start thinking about your back-up plan.

Cari’s Corner Is there a black cloud over the Clubhouse? Did we break a
mirror or have a black cat cross our path? All supers::ons
aside, it sure seems like we are having a streak of bad
luck...roof leaks, carpet installa:on problems and even a day
with no working copy machine (seriously!).
For those of you that haven’t heard, there were significant
challenges in removing the exis:ng carpet in the Ballroom/
Lakeview Room. In some areas, the removal was actually
peeling back thin layers of the plywood sub-flooring and in
others it was leaving a glue-y mess. They couldn’t lay the
new carpet on such an uneven surface, and it wouldn’t meet
the industry specifica:ons, so we had to explore various
op:ons. While the op:ons were being researched, we
allowed dance floor use only in the Ballroom and kept all
other rooms/areas opened. Our fitness and dance groups
have been so flexible and understanding. Unfortunately,
some other events have been cancelled and you can see
new February calendars on our website and posted in the
hallway. Keep checking our website homepage for carpet
schedule updates (www.summerfield55.org).
On the assessment collec:on and fob/card distribu:on
front, all is going very well. We are fortunate to have a
team of volunteers assis:ng during the busy :mes, helping
calculate payment amounts and showing residents how to
use the fob/card. The new fob/card system is so easy and
we are hearing a lot of posi:ve feedback. By the way, in this
case, fob is not an acronym (as in free-on-board in the trade
world); it’s just a regular word that derived from the pocket
watch era. It’s a ornament or token aCached to a chain; you
most likely already have a key fob for your car too.
Our Saturday office hours test in January was a huge success
and we’re planning another one in February: Saturday,
February 2nd
from 9 AM—1 PM. It was a lot of fun to meet
some residents that we normally don’t see too much of and
to learn about where they work. We were glad to see that
those folks actually read the Summary and knew about the
extra office hours!

Memoir Workshop Launched
The first mee:ng of the Memoir
Workshop, under the Social Club
umbrella, surprised everyone with an
aCendance of nearly 50 enthusias:c
wanna-be memoir writers. Because of
the large turnout, the par:cipants have
been split into two groups for future
sessions. Group 1, which will meet the
first Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM,

begin with the leCers A through

beginning with P through Z, will meet the
third Tuesday each month at 1:00 PM.
The next scheduled mee:ngs will be
February 5th
for Group 1 and February
19th
for Group 2. Sessions are held in the
Conference Room at the Clubhouse
(across from the Library).
For those who missed the ini:al mee:ng,
the assignment is to start working on a
:me line of the events of your life,
star:ng with full name, date and place of
birth, and parent's names, dates of birth
and loca:ons, places you lived, schools
aCended—and moving on from there. If
you have addi:onal ques:ons, contact
Sally Stuart at (503) 642-9844 or Barbara
Roth at (503) 477-2481. Barbara Roth
will be leading the February sessions.

A successful building or remodeling project
requires careful planning and aCen:on to
detail. Below are the top five mistakes made
while doing a construc:on project or
remodel.
♦ Automacally accepng the lowest bid.
The old saying “you get what you pay
for” generally applies here. A higher bid
may be worth the price in beCer
materials, workmanship and reliability.
♦ No wri.en contract.
A wriCen contract protects you and the
contractor. It is required that all
construc:on agreements be commiCed
to a wriCen contract if the price exceeds
$2000.
♦ Not checking the contractor’s license.
A license is required for any construc:on
business that adver:ses, offers, bids,
arranges for, or performs any
construc:on, altera:on, home
improvement, remodeling or repair
work.
♦ Not checking references.
Check with previous customers. Were
they sa:sfied with the work? Was the
work finished within a reasonable :me
frame? Did the contractor return phone
calls? If the person had problems with
the contractor, ask how the contractor
responded to complaints. Look at
examples of the contractor’s work.
♦ Not doing the homework.
Plan your project carefully. Consider
your budget. Find pictures of styles and
products you like. Be sure your materials
and colors comply with the
SUMMERFIELD CC&R requirements.

Thank you Darlene Young! A[er many years of suppor:ng the Summerfield Board
of Directors by tackling the role as City of Tigard
Liaison, Darlene Young has decided to pass the baton.
The Board wishes to express their sincere thanks to
Darlene for her years of dedica:on, thorough
repor:ng, tenacious aTtude and calm, professional
demeanor.
And now we are looking for a new City of Tigard
Liaison! What does the job entail? Basically it’s
somebody to represent Summerfield to the City, on
big projects and small, as well as correspondence with
our residents. Some:mes a phone call or a visit to the
City offices will suffice, some:mes aCending a City
Council Mee:ng could be necessary. Then aCend the
monthly Board Mee:ngs to provide a report and
discuss any concerns. If interested, please contact Cari
Froeber, SCA Administrator, at 503.620.0131 or
The book for February is The Winter of Our Discontent,
John Steinbeck’s last novel, published in 1961. It tells
the story of Ethan Allen Hawley, a former member of
Long Island’s aristocra:c class. His father loses the
family fortune and Hawley finds himself working as a
clerk in a grocery store and with a wife and children
who resent their low social and economic posi:on.
Hawley wants to regain his former status and others
have ideas how he could do that, but not all ideas are
moral or even legal. Hawley had always prided himself
on his honesty and integrity, so this creates a huge
conflict for him. Will he compromise his morals to
achieve his goals or uphold them? We are le[ to won-
der as Hawley starts on his quest. You are invited to
read the book and then join us on Tuesday, February
12th
at 2:00 PM in the Conference Room of the Club-
house to discuss it.
The March book is appropriately named March; a
Novel by Geraldine Brooks. Happy reading!
