MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS

When Korach questions Moshe’s right to authority, Moshe replies, “Rav Lachem B’nei Levi -- it’s enough for you, sons of Levi (that Hashem separated your Tribe for His service).” The Medrash comments, “B’Rav Beeser, B’Rav Bisruhu, Rav Lach Al Tosef,” meaning that Moshe was repaid Mida K’neged Mida (measure for measure) for his harsh answer to Korach’s group. The overflow crowd at this week's Bais Yaakov graduation. Do we think it's time for a new Bais Yaakov building?!

rael (of course for purposes of Ruchniyus), Hashem answered him in a similar way.

Always striving for higher levels of Ruchniyus is the way every Yid should live. It’s what his main focus should be, and he should not let himself get caught up in the distractions of the world around him.

Rabbi Yisroel Reisman tells a story from R’ Mordechai Druk in Darash Mordechai about a Yid in the Yerushayim of old who had a golden Na-poleon, an extremely precious coin. His young son, not realizing its worth, once took it to the candy store to buy a lollipop. His parents asked him how he bought it, and he said I found this coin…. “Oh, no!” they cried. “That coin is worth a fortune!” They ran to the grocer and demanded, “How could you take a Napoleon for one lollipop?” The grocer replied, “He only gave me a copper coin.” “You are a liar, a thief!” They dragged him to Bais Din, which ruled that the grocer must swear, which he did. The city was in an uproar, with everyone talking about the story, and most believing the parents’ story, thus labeling the grocer a thief. He was humiliated and his business suffered.

Some months later a man knocked on the parents’ door and confessed that he had taken the coin. “I was desperate for money to feed my family, and I passed your son holding this coin. I reasoned that if they’re so rich that even their child carries a Napoleon, certainly I can borrow it short term to feed my starving kids. So I switched coins without your son real-izing, and now I have saved enough money to return it to you.” The par-ents realized that the grocer was innocent and had been shamed for no reason!

R’ Druk asks, who gets Gehinnom? The owner of the coin? No, he ar-gued in Bais Din what he thought to be correct. The grocer? Certainly not! He was honest and a poor victim. The man who took it? He certain-ly did the wrong thing, but Gehinnom? His family was starving and he was desperate. The ones who get Gehinnom are the townspeople, for

making a tumult and mixing in to a controversy that was-n’t their business!

It is often easy, and is also a natural tendency, to get in-volved in other people’s af-fairs. But one’s quest for Ruchniyus will certainly suf-fer if he allows his curiosity to go unchecked. When the ambulance with lights and sirens blaring comes to a screeching halt down the block, is it really so important to run over to see who is hurt and what is wrong with them? First, it is most likely that a crowd gathering around will

not make them feel more comfortable! Second, wouldn’t both you and they be better served if you stopped to say a Perek of Tehillim (chapter of Psalms) for them to merit a speedy recovery instead of craning your neck to be nosy?

If the tumult involves Machlokes (discord), then the spiritual consequences can be even worse. The Torah this week exhorts “V’lo Yih’yeh ChiKorach V’cha’adaso – Do not be like Korach and his cohorts.” The Gemara (Sanhedrin 110a) learns from this Po-suk that anyone who perpetuates a Machlokes trans-gresses this negative commandment. That’s why Moshe went to Dasan and Aviram to try to quell their argument, even though it wasn’t he who was the insti-gator. Although the Rambam does not, many Rishonim in-clude this in the counting of the 613 Biblical Mitzvos. (See Sefer Chofetz Chaim, Pesicha, Lavin #12. See also Meshech Chachama here.)

The lesson is clear: Our aspirations should be for Ruchni-yus growth; and we, unlike Korach and his group, must not allow any worldly lures to distract us from that goal.
