Makenzie Hurst is a fresh-man here at Altus High School and has lived in Altus her entire life. She lives with her brother, Josh, who graduated in 2016, her sister, Kassie, who is cur-rently a senior, and her parents, Teresa and Kendall Hurst. Makenzie’s interests include playing basketball and spending time with her friends. She start-ed playing basketball in junior high, and Mrs. Scott, Makenzie’s junior high coach, pushed her to always do her absolute best in everything she does. Makenzie states, “Mrs. Scott not only taught me how to play basketball but taught me major life lessons throughout practice that I use to help me in life to this day.” Her favorite thing about AHS are the social events the school provides such as sporting

events and dances. Makenzie enjoys attending the football games and cheering on our boys in blue to victory with her friends. Something students of AHS may not know about Makenzie is that she is half Kiwi. Her mom’s side of the family is from and lives in New Zealand. They have visited multiple times. After high school, Makenzie plans to attend college to be-come a veterinarian or earn a degree that involves spending time with animals. What motivates her most in life are her parents, friends, and trying to change other people’s day by putting a smile on their face. Makenzie states, “If I see someone with a frown on their face or having a bad day, I al-ways try my best to cheer them up by making them smile.”

Hernan Rosas is a freshman here at Altus High School. He has attended APS his entire life. Hernan is the son of Maria and Ernesto Sr. His mom, is a stay-at-home mom and his fa-ther owns TLC, a landscaping business. Hernan also has a sister, Rocio, and two brothers, Victor and Ernesto. Ernesto is a sen-ior here at AHS and is the kick-er for the football team. Hernan’s interests include playing football, wrestling and fishing. What pushes him to be the best in his sports is the quote, “Grind until your idols become rivals” by Drake. After high school Hernan would enjoy going to OU to play football or join the Coast Guard. He is blessed to have such a great family that pushes him to be the best in everything he does. He is also motivated by the quote, “You miss 100% of the shot you don’t take” by Wayne Grizzly. Hernan also states, “I have a Snapchat, everyone should add me, hernan_rosas191.” Hernan's favorite things about AHS is all of the great teachers he has and how nice they are in the classroom. In addition to cheering at football games, basketball games, and wrestling matches, the Altus High Cheerleaders have a season of their own. This weekend the cheerleaders placed 4th at their regional competition in Chickasha. After a hard summer of workouts and three hour prac-tices each day, they have per-fected their two-minute routine that consist of jumps, tumbling, stunts, and a pyramid. The girls not only have to focus on hit-ting their skills during their rou-tine but also have to make sure their words are loud, enunciat-ed, and together. Cheerleading is different than other sports because they don’t have weekly games to prepare for their big event. They practice for three months just to preform their routine once for regionals and once for state. Perfecting their routine is

crucial because one wrong move can drop them down several places. Coach Kacie Bates says, "I have high expectations for this group of girls. There is a lot of talent on the squad, and these girls are motivated and have their eye on the prize! I’m blessed to coach and lead such a great group of

girls and feel honored to be apart of this program.” The girls will compete in Norman, Oklahoma, this Saturday against the top teams in the state to hopefully achieve their main goal of winning the 5A Okla-homa Cheerleading State Title. Go cheer on the AHS cheerleaders.
