Dr. Carrie Jurney is a graduate cum
laude of the University of Georgia
CVM. She also holds a degree in Neu-
roscience from Emory University. She
did an internship at a private practice in
Seattle, then completed her neurology
residency at the University of Pennsyl-
vania. Dr. Jurney became board certi-
fied in neurology and also received her
Advanced Neurosurgery Certificate in
2009 while in private practice here in
the Bay Area. In 2015, Jurney Veteri-
nary Neurology was established which
includes mobile neurosurgery, consulta-
tions, and lectures delivered both in per-
son and online.
In this lecture, Dr. Jurney will present
practical aspects of spinal radiography
for the practitioner. She will also re-
view in depth the diseases that can be
reliably diagnosed on radiographs and
discuss their cardinal findings. This
popular lecture is heavy on clinical
examples and pictures while answering
such questions as “Is that narrowed
space a slipped disc?” or ”What does
spondylosis really mean?”
Come prepared to start off the new year
with an evening that is both informative
and enjoyable.

Sergeant reckleSS, america’S War HorSe In October 1952, a small group of United States Marines from the Recoilless Rife Platoon, Anti-tank Compa-
ny, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division on duty in Korea needed a pack horse to carry heavy muni-
tions into battle. From a racetrack in Seoul, they purchased a little sorrel mare with a blaze and three white
stockings that was of Mongolian and Thoroughbred descent. Back at their base camp, these Marines found
that she not only learned fast and worked hard, but considered herself one of them. She was allowed to roam
freely through the camp, entering tents to sleep on cold nights and joining the men in eating almost anything
such as sandwiches, scrambled eggs, beer, Coke and even $30 worth of poker chips. She served in numerous
combat actions during the Korean War, carrying supplies and ammunition as well as evacuating wounded
soldiers. Amazingly, she quickly learned each battlefield supply route so she often traveled to deliver sup-
plies in 300-pound loads by herself without a handler. They named her “Reckless” but her middle name
could have been “Fearless”. The highlight of her military career came in March 1953 during the Battle for
Outpost Vegas, known as the most vicious of the entire war. In a single day Reckless made 51 solo trips to
resupply multiple front-line units. She was wounded in combat twice, given the battlefield rank of Corporal
in 1953, then a battlefield promotion to Sergeant in 1954 after the war had ended. Reckless was the first
horse in the Marine Corps known to have participated in an amphibious landing. Following the war, Reck-
less was awarded two Purple Hearts, a USMC Good Conduct Medal and several other military honors. Her
wartime service record was featured in the Saturday Evening Post and in LIFE magazine as being one of
America’s Top 100 All-time Heroes.
After the war, Reckless was retired and brought to Camp Pendleton, California with a homecoming celebra-
tion tour that included TV appearances and welcome parties from New York City to San Francisco. She was
officially promoted to Staff Sergeant in 1959 by the Commandant of the Marine Corps at a formal ceremony
in her honor at Camp Pendleton. A plaque and photo were dedicated at the stables there. Reckless lived out
her life in the regal fashion she deserved until she passed away on May 13, 1968 as the only horse to hold
official rank in the United States Marine Corps. Appropriately, a full-size statue of Reckless was dedicated
July 26, 2013 at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, Virginia.
The best and most complete biographical story of Sergeant Reckless and her heroism is told in a book of that
title published in 2014 by Robin Hutton. Hers is an incredible tale of bravery under fire coupled with the
warm camaraderie amongst Reckless and her fellow Marines.
