2008 Crowley Award Winner

im Crowley, in whose memory this award is named, was the head coach at Jackson St. John and Jackson Lumen

Christi High Schools for seven-teen years, during which time his teams compiled a record of 127-34-6, four unbeaten seasons and Class B State Championships in 1977 and ‘79. Jim served the MHSFCA as the Chairman of the Public Relations Committee. Jim Crowley stressed having fun, working hard, and being dedicated to his young athletes. He often said, “If you don’t have fun playing football, it isn’t worth the time and effort you put into it.” Coach Crowley’s young men

took that bit of philosophy to heart and had a great deal of success, not only on the football field but later in life as well. Coach Crowley was shot and killed in his own driveway just two months after the 1979 State football finals.

Jim Crowley was a good football coach and a valuable member of the MHSFCA. We remember that and recognize Jim’s contributions to football in Michigan with our annual award in his name.

Dick Fodor, our 2008 Crowley Award recipient, was born in the Upper Peninsula community of Iron River in July of 1947. He attended Iron River schools and graduated

from Iron River high School in 1965. He attended Michigan State University and received his teaching degree from MSU in 1969 and his Masters from Western Michigan University in 1975.

While most of our previous Crowley recipients spent their careers at a variety of schools, Dick found a place he loved and stayed there for his entire career, influencing the lives of literally thousands of children and families over his thirty- four years in the classroom and on the fields, floors and tracks of Bridgman Schools.

During his thirty-four years at Bridg-man, Coach Fodor taught middle school science, mathematics, language arts and social studies, was a national tester for science curriculum and an educator of Michigan science teachers. He also was an MEA and NEA representative and did summer work as a school custo-dian. Certainly his heart and soul was in the Bridgman community.

As busy as he was inside the school setting he began to help the junior high football, track and basketball programs and then became the defensive coordina-tor for the high school football program while becoming the varsity track coach for the next twenty-four years and stayed on as the junior high basketball coach for the next fifteen years.

In 1981 Coach Fodor became the head football coach at Bridgman High School, retiring from that position in 1990. Ivan Muhlenkamp, the renowned St. Joseph High School coach and also a Crowley recipient, convinced Dick that he was too young to retire from football and talked him into coaching the St. Joseph JV foot-ball team for the next ten years. In 2000, Dick once again became the head coach at Bridgman and held that position for the following two years.

Fran was a tremendous part of the Harrison football program and school community who gave tirelessly of her time and energy. She helped in creating a successful football program

in her community, and she also worked on a number of projects for the MHSFCA. This annual MHSFCA award recognizes and honors those women who have contributed their time, energy and expertise to promoting high school football in their community and in the state of Michigan.

She has been involved with the football programs at North Muskegon, Kalamazoo College and Paw Paw High School for 26 years. She currently teaches biology and environmental sciences at Portage Central. Peggy has been married to Coach Dave Warmack for 41 years and has attended all but two or three games in Dave’s 35 years of coaching. She has kept stats, taped games, served as hostess for countless team meals, organized numer-ous banquets, created camp brochures and produced season highlight films for the players. Clay Howard, Leslie, has run the football clock at Leslie for 34 years and has run the clock for boys and girls basketball for 33 years. JohnRighi, Johannesburg-Lewiston, has been the clock operator for 28 years. He is the only one who has ever run the clock at J’berg. Starting out “in the bleach-ers,” he helped raise funds and physically helped to build the press box.

Dr. Ron LeClair, Tawas Area has served 30 years asmedical advisor to the Tawas Area football program. He has treated many athletes without compensa-tion, served on the school board and taped ankles at both home and away games. Leigh (Pete) Darling, Ovid-Elsie, served the football program for 30 years. He has taken care of all field preparation, phones and equipment repair . He gets the

locker room ready and packs all equipment for away games and drives the equipment van to all away games.

The MHSFCA is proud to honor academic achievement by awarding the top four teams in each of our eight divisions Academic All State Team recognition. We awarded 38 deserving individuals with First Team Academic All State Honors. Of the 38 recipients this year, 24 were ranked #1 in their class and 33 have a 4.0 GPA or higher. Another 128 student-athletes were named Honorable Mention Academic All State. The spring takes us to Ann Arbor for our annual MHSFCA Hall of Fame Banquet at The University of Michigan. The Hall of Fame began in 1982 with the induction of the charter board of directors as the original members. The association annually inducts Michigan high school football coaches who have had a minimum of 100 victories or a minimum of 20 years of coaching in the state. The presentation of the $1000 Terry Rose Memorial Scholarship (MHSFCA past president - 1986) is awarded at this event. The summer finds us in East Lansing where we gather for our annual MHSFCA All Star Football Game at Michigan State University. Eighty-eight of the best football players in our state play in one of the premier all star games in the country. At halftime we annually present ten $500 scholarships along with our Youth

Football Alliance Award, The All Star weekend also includes our annual leadership conference which is for upcoming senior football players to learn leadership techniques to take back to their teams in the fall. During the fail, the membership is busy with the football season The MHSFCA was instrumental in the adoption of a statewide playoff system to determine a true state champion. The goal was accomplished in 1975 with the first post season competition. Our association has been the driving force in the continued expansion that now includes 256 teams in eight divisions. These eight championship games are played during Thanksgiving weekend at Ford Field in Detroit. We are currently working towards the construction of a 4000 square foot Hall of Fame site in the new “Student Athlete Performance Enhancement Center” at Rynearson Stadium on the campus of Eastern Michigan University which is scheduled to open in 2010. The MHSFCA is governed by a slate of officers and directed by 36 Regional Directors, Committee Chairmen, Past Presidents and an Executive Director who voluntarily give of their time to make our association and high school football in the State of Michigan, the very best.

ince our inception in 1972 our association has enjoyed great prosperity as a direct result of the tireless efforts and dedication of our past officers and Board of Directors. With our annual membership consistently over 2000 each year, our association continues to be not only one of the largest, but a

model for coaches associations across our state and the country. The primary goal of the MHSFCA is to promote high school football in Michigan. Here are some of the ways our association works to accomplish this: The New Year began with the 36th Annual “Winners Circle Clinic” in Battle Creek (one of the largest clinics in the country). The speakers again were outstanding, highlighted by keynote speakers Butch Jones Head Coach of MAC Champions, CMU; Frank Beamer Head Coach at Virginia Tech and Rich Rodriguez new Head Coach at The University of Michigan). At the clinic banquet we present the prestigious Jim Crowley Memorial Award, Steve Spicer Leadership Awards, State and Regional Coaches of the Year Awards, Assistant Coaches of the Year Awards, Woman of the Year Awards and Honorary Lifetime Membership Awards, all of which recognize significant contributions by many people to high school football. Current and newly elected directors are recognized at this function as well as past presidents.

he 36th Annual MHSFCA Football Clinic in Battle Creek was held on January 17, 18 and 19. Nearly 1600 coaches attended and used this three day clinic as an opportunity to pick up new ideas to help their programs and to celebrate the great experiences of

the past season. The Thursday night “Early Bird” sessions are becoming more and more popular as coaches are opting to come in on Thursday evening rather than Friday morning. A near full house of coaches listened to “headliner” Butch Jones, the Head Coach of the Mid American Conference Champion Central Michigan University Chippewas. Thursday night also featured two hour sessions with the Central Michigan staff. The Friday morning “Kick-Off Classic” with Virginia Tech Head Coach Frank Beamer was a new addition to the clinic format. Attendance for the Coach Beamer talk was outstand-ing. The Friday afternoon sessions (by both High School and College Programs) offered seven different meeting sites occur-ring simultaneously with a wide variety of topics ranging from offense, defense, special teams, philosophy and conditioning. Many of the rooms were standing room only and additional rooms may need to be added in the future. Western Michigan University Head Coach Bill Cubit, Albion College Head Coach Craig Rundle, Western Michigan University, Michigan State University and the Eastern Michigan University staffs all gave outstanding presentations! Mo Moriarty and his staff from Carmel High School, the 5A State Champion from Indiana, offered five hours of insight into their successful program. Friday night promised to be spectacular as the new Head Football Coach from the University of Michigan, Rich Rodriguez, provided the Keynote Presentation. The HUGE crowd enjoyed the humor and insight Coach Rodriguez offered about his past success and the future of Michigan Football. The “Social Hour” was held in the Kellogg Arena and this continues to be a great time of fellowship and camaraderie. Saturday morning is always a treat as the “Ford Field” coaches share some of their ideas for program success. The Awards Banquet is held immediately after the last speaker. The Banquet honors the Regional Coaches of the Year, the Assistant Coaches of the Year, the State Coaches of the Year and individual programs which are receiving various honors. Dick Fodor from

Bridgeman and St. Joseph High Schools was honored as the Jim Crowley Award Winner, the highest honor the MHSFCA bestows on a coach. The clinic continues to grow as a near record number of exhibitors were set up in the Kellogg Arena and a record number of speakers presented during this three day event. The Clinic Committee is trying to offer you the best learning opportunity in the country. NATS is the MHSFCA Skills CampThe National Athletic Testing System (NATS) is a program partnership between the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and officially recognized state high school coaches associations.

The NATS program is in many respects an athletic ver-sion of the Scholastic Aptitude Test for high school football players. It is a nationwide standardized athletic performance test that produces results that can be used to track and com-pare the players’ athletic ability and development. NATS is also, however, a means of providing players, parents, coaches and guidance counselors important information and services pertaining to college recruiting, NCAA academic require-ments, financial aid and athletic performance analysis and preparation. Development of NATS began in 2000 when the AFCA organized a task force comprised of college coaches and state high school coaches association representatives to research and develop the NATS program. The task force designed a national athletic testing system and established a standard-ized athletic test grading formula and player data distribu-tion technology. The task force also developed web-based interactive tracking tools for players (and parents) to help them follow their physical development and academic prog-ress throughout their high school career. NATS concluded its third and final phase of develop-ment in 2004 when six state high school coaches associations

conducted the first NATS Tests. Following the success of these initial NATS Tests, AFCA approved full implementation of the NATS program. All players, beginning as early as their freshman year, are invited to participate NATS. NATS results and player profiles are distributed online to every college football program in the country.

2008 MHSFCA Scholarships The MHSFCA is proud to sponsor two different scholarships for its members and their students. If you have an athlete or other member of your program who you believe is deserving, please make sure that the proper forms and/or paperwork are completed. The deadline for scholarship applications is March 1.

Competitive Scholarship These scholarships are for those outstanding students who are involved in your football programs. There are 12 scholarships awarded statewide. In addition to players this could include managers, statisticians, student trainers, football cheerleaders, or any others that are part of your program. All candidates need to fill out a scholarship form and return it according to the directions. These awards are based on class rank, ACT score, GPA, references, and a student biography. Successful candidates in the past have generally had a GPA of 3.5 or higher and an ACT score of 25 or higher. If you have such a deserving student please give the application form to them to complete.

Terry Rose Memorial Schlarship

This $1000 scholarship is available to the children of MHSFCA members. The only requirements are that the son or daughter is planning to attend an institution of higher learning next year and that their parent is a member of the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association. You should send one form for each child that is eligible. This scholarship is drawn by lottery at the Hall of Fame Banquet in Ann Arbor in the spring. Alliance Award MHSFCA Youth Football Committee

The MHSFCA Alliance Award is offered as a token of appreciation to person(s) having made a long-term commitment to youth football. Individuals that actively promote youth football, simply for a love of the game, and have done so for a long period of time, are excellent candidates. Coaches can be nominated if their contributions expand far beyond personal team(s). Won/loss records are of no concern. As a rule of thumb, persons that have affected the most youngsters over the longest period of time will receive the most consideration through this process. I am sure you are aware of the teacher shortage problem in our state. Finding a teacher that is willing to coach football is even more difficult and is getting worse every year. Nearly every head football coach has a player or two attending college for teaching. We have developed a database of teacher education students that played football and are willing to coach upon graduation. I believe it would be much easier for administrators looking for teachers to hire a coach if they had a list of qualified applicants. Below is an information sheet. Please copy this as needed and give it to any of your former players that are in a teacher edu-cation program in college and are interested in coaching upon graduation. They do not have to be seniors to get their name in the database. I would like to keep track of freshmen through seniors. The success of this program is dependent upon the coaches getting the information sheet to prospective teacher/coaches. The second half of this concept is to get the information to the hiring person. If your school has a teaching position open and would like a list of future football coaches, they need to contact me and I will provide them with the information. Please notify your hiring person that there is a list available to them.
