I want to address those questions or concerns that you may have and invite you to speak with myself, or with any of the staff, so that you feel informed and comfortable. Even the greatest, most exciting changes can bring stress and questions – so feel free to ask, and seek support from us! What is a sabbatical? A sabbatical for a minister is a time for rekindling the sense of calling, for growing in one's knowledge, and for deepening ones spiritual life. It is a time for renewal and refreshment for those who serve others. It is also a time for a congregation to rediscover its own resources for leadership and to be renewed itself as a result of the sabbatical. Sabbaticals are biblical, practical, and test in a way few things can, the mettle and unity of the congregation, while producing healthy results for pastors and congregation. What is a sabbatical NOT? Sabbatical is NOT a time to take a vacation from worship, or the church. We will still be here doing some awesome things – worship, ministry, outreach, fellowship – and you certainly dont want to miss out on that. Sabbatical is NOT a time to worry about the leadership of the church. Lisa and I will continue to lead worship and work with our amazing congregational care team. Our musicians will still enhance worship and create new spaces to experience God, our pastoral care and small groups will still continue to love and support our members. Our elders and deacons are still providing leadership, and the church will continue to be about our family in faith, not just about one individual. I will continue to serve the church full-time; Lisa, in her capacities as youth and childrens minister, will also be taking on some new participation with pastoral care; our front office and administrative staff and volunteers will all still be here. Please know that you can contact me about any questions you may have, about concerns, and even with cute pictures of babies, grand-babies and puppies. We are excited about this opportunity as we will continue to learn and grow together as we follow Christ and grow closer to God with you and one another! [email protected] cell: 816-679-7730

Dear Friends… While I know that many of us are terribly excited for Bo and Chris Crowe and their opportunity for this sabbatical time, I know there are also some questions that still linger as we begin these three months together. I want to address those questions or concerns that you may have and invite you to speak with myself, or with any of the staff, so that you feel informed and comfortable. Even the greatest, most exciting changes can bring stress and questions – so feel free to ask, and seek support from us!

What is a sabbatical? A sabbatical for a minister is a time for rekindling the sense of calling, for growing in one's knowledge, and for deepening one’s spiritual life.

We will still be here doing some awesome things – worship, ministry, outreach, fellowship – and you certainly don’t want to miss out on that.

I will continue to serve the church full-time; Lisa, in her capacities as youth and children’s minister, will also be taking on some new participation with pastoral care; our front office and administrative staff and volunteers will all still be here. Please know that you can contact me about any questions you may have, about concerns, and even with cute pictures of babies, grand-babies and puppies. Stewardship Green Moment by Jody Cash

Green Moment for May Here are some tips for keeping cool at home.

Keeping your house cooler during the summer does not have to be horribly expensive if you follow these tips:

1. If you are not home during the day, close your windows, blinds, and curtains before you leave the house—this will keep the house cool for as long as possible. If you are home during the day, you probably will not want all the windows closed and/or covered. In the morning, keep the east-facing windows closed and covered and also, if you have south-facing windows, keep them closed and covered as well. In the afternoon, you can open the curtains and blinds on the east windows and close the curtains and blinds on the west-facing windows since the sun shines in the west windows in the afternoon and early evening. Use dark-color curtains, roman shades, or roller shades to help keep out the sun and heat. In the evenings, if the air is cool enough, open the windows to promote as much air circulation as possible.

2. To help keep the heat in the house to a minimum, use appliances such as stoves, washers, dryers, and irons early in the morning or late at night. If possible, do not use the dryer during hot weather—use a clothesline. Whenever possible, do not use your stove—cook outside or use your microwave. Microwaves use two-thirds less energy than stoves. Another option is to use a toaster oven--it generates much less heat than a stove and uses about half as much energy as a stove. Leave computers and other appliances not in use turned off—if left running, they can generate heat. When possible, leave appliances not in use unplugged. Though this would only reduce your electric bill by a small amount, it does add up to a good savings amount over time.

3. Use cotton sheets in the summer as cotton stays cooler and breathes easier than other materials. Also, you may want to consider buckwheat pillows as they are cooler than conventional pillows—buckwheat hulls have a natural air space between them, even when packed into a pillow case.

4. Set your ceiling fans to rotate counter-clockwise in the summer. When your ceiling fan is set in counter-clockwise motion and at a higher speed, it creates a wind chill effect which keeps you cooler.

5. Incandescent light bulbs produce a great deal of heat. Use more energy efficient lighting such as fluorescent bulbs.

6. Planting trees and shrubs close to your house can help reduce your electric bill as they shade your house from the sun.

7. When you do use your air conditioner, keep the thermostat about 80-82 degrees when you are not home and about 70-72 degrees when you are home. This will help to reduce your electric bills. You can turn the thermostat up at night which will also help save energy.
