From the Department Chair– Dr. Thomas W. Engler Petroleum Engineering Department Volume 11, Issue 1 www.nmt.edu/~petro March 2012 Welcome to our 2012 Spring newsletter! It has been another busy and successful year, with many of the highlights described in the follow- ing pages. For more information on these and all of our activities I encourage you to visit the web- site (www.nmt.edu/~petro ) and stay up-to-date. I would like to recognize several noteworthy items from the past year. Through the gener- ous support of Alumni and industry we are now offering the Well Control School annually. The cer- tification is a benefit to our students, both in college and afterwards in industry. Also, we continue to provide over $50,000 annually in scholarship money generated from alumni, industry and pro- fessional societies. No other program on campus can boast as much, and on behalf of the students and program we thank you for your support. Engineering at New Mexico Tech is experiencing rapid growth; with the majority (~60%) of students currently engineering majors. The Petroleum Engineering program is among the growing programs, with approximately 100 undergraduate and 40 graduate students at last count. We have also been fortunate to hire Dr. Tan Nguyen in January 2011, and are currently in the process of searching for an additional faculty member. With expansion are also growing pains; needs for ad- ditional lab sections results in a strain on the existing equipment, requiring the purchase of new equipment, additional teaching assistants, and so on. We are actively resolving these issues and thus maintaining the reputation of providing a high quality education at NMT. And last, I would like to invite all of you to senior design presentations and the SPE BBQ on Thursday, April 26 th and to the golf tournament and Langdon Taylor Banquet on Friday, April 27 th . The students put in a lot of work to arrange and organize these events. And obviously, without Karen Balch nothing would get done. It is always a pleasure to see past students mingle and swap stories with the current generation. See you in April! Thomas W. Engler, Ph.D.,P.E. Dean of Engineering

Welcome to our 2012 Spring newsletter!

It has been another busy and successful year, with many of the highlights described in the follow-

ing pages. For more information on these and all of our activities I encourage you to visit the web-

site (www.nmt.edu/~petro) and stay up-to-date.

I would like to recognize several noteworthy items from the past year. Through the gener-

ous support of Alumni and industry we are now offering the Well Control School annually. The cer-

tification is a benefit to our students, both in college and afterwards in industry. Also, we continue

to provide over $50,000 annually in scholarship money generated from alumni, industry and pro-

fessional societies. No other program on campus can boast as much, and on behalf of the students

and program we thank you for your support.

Engineering at New Mexico Tech is experiencing rapid growth; with the majority (~60%) of

students currently engineering majors. The Petroleum Engineering program is among the growing

programs, with approximately 100 undergraduate and 40 graduate students at last count. We have

also been fortunate to hire Dr. Tan Nguyen in January 2011, and are currently in the process of

searching for an additional faculty member. With expansion are also growing pains; needs for ad-

ditional lab sections results in a strain on the existing equipment, requiring the purchase of new

equipment, additional teaching assistants, and so on. We are actively resolving these issues and

thus maintaining the reputation of providing a high quality education at NMT.

And last, I would like to invite all of you to senior design presentations and the SPE BBQ on

Thursday, April 26th and to the golf tournament and Langdon Taylor Banquet on Friday, April 27th.

The students put in a lot of work to arrange and organize these events. And obviously, without

Karen Balch nothing would get done. It is always a pleasure to see past students mingle and swap

stories with the current generation. See you in April! Thomas W. Engler, Ph.D.,P.E. Dean of Engineering

NMT Petroleum Engineering Connecting Socially

Our Petroleum Engineering website is heavily utilized by faculty, staff, students, prospective students, and alumni. This summer we will continue to reach out to everyone by creating a de-partment page on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. When the students return for the fall semester, they will have access to various forms of elec-tronic communication, in addition to our website and emails, to remain up-to-date. Watch our website and look for an early fall update email regarding the live connection for these media forums.

Wild Well Control School March 23-25, 2012 Fifteen students attended a two and a half day school with Wild Well Control. This year, Wild Well Control brought three simulators to instruct students on well control and safety protocols. The average cost per student to attend is $250-$300, plus an additional $1,000-$1,200 for meals throughout the weekend. Sponsorships and other funding sources allows the students to attend without having to pay out of pocket for the training and certification.

We would like to thank Bill Marble (‘73), Diane Visser (’81) and Julie Cruse (’00) for this year’s funding. Pictures are on the website.

Dr. Robert Bretz, Retired After 30 years of teaching, Dr. Bretz retired in August 2011. The seniors from both engineering programs (Petroleum and Chemical) surprised him with a card at their annual banquets. While Bob no longer teaches, he is still around and is enjoying retire-ment. He has been seen at the golf course, alone and, recently, with his grandchildren, practicing on the putting green.

ATCE 2012, San Antonio, Texas. October 8-October 10. We had over 45 students in attendance at the 2011 ATCE and we are looking at an-other high attendance in San Antonio later this fall. There will also be another NMT alumni reception scheduled during the conference, but the schedule is not out yet. Watch our website, your inboxes, and mailboxes for updated information mid-to-late summer, including information on how to help us sponsor the bar and/or food at the reception in San An-tonio.

Since he joined the department, Dr. Tan Nguyen has been busy with classes, labs and students.

He reports, “I have six graduate students working for me on six differ-ent projects related to multiphase flow of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids in pipes and annuli; artificial lift technologies, under-balanced drilling; hydraulics of time-dependent drilling fluids; slurry flow; and rheology of drilling fluids. This spring 2012, there will be three companies coming for the Advisory Board Meeting including Petrobras, Kuwait Oil Company (KOC), and DETNORSKE from Norway.

We have been constructing the Production & Drilling Research Center located in the lot T89 (west of the green house and south Facilities Management). Currently, we are in the process of building two fa-cilities for studying gas lift and hydraulics of time-dependent drilling fluids. The facilities are capable of testing with a pressure of 250 psi, and a temperature of 150 0F. We are planning to have some prelimi-nary test results in the middle of April.”

New Mexico Tech American Association of Drilling Engineers (AADE) Student Chapter

First AADE Annual Miner’s Clay Shoot Competition records huge success!

On Saturday, March 3, 2012, the AADE hosted its first annual clay shoot competition at the gun range in Socorro, NM. The competition was initiated to ensure continued, close relationships and co-operations between the school chapter of the AADE and the Permian Basin section, as well as a means of involving members in the Socorro community with student activities.

The club recorded an excellent turn out for the event, with a total of 32 people in attendance- including Janie Snelson and Raegan Lumpkin, members of the AADE Permian Basin student liaison section who came out to support our activities. “You guys are doing great out here in Socorro,” Raegan enthused. “You may be a small school, but let me tell you, you are doing much better than many other schools in the region, and that is very encouraging.”

Ten competitors were registered for the Clay Shoot, and when the dust, cracked clays and gunpowder had settled, Cade Payne (Mechanical Engineering) emerged victorious with a great show of marksman-ship, winning the 1st place prize and 2nd place went to another NMT student, JW Thompson; and Garett McKee (Chemical Engineer) came in 3rd.

We all had a great time, and we want to thank all our sponsors and advisors who helped make the event possible. It is our hope that the competition grows bigger and better every year, and fosters a spirit of healthy competition, commitment, and excellence amongst all future participants.

Memorial Scholarships in the Department.

The Josh Kamas Scholarship fund was formed in 2011, by the NMT AADE student chapter. Donations to this fund will generate scholarships to our students.

From the 2010-11 NMT AADE Secretary, Tom Shimura, “Josh Kamas was a founding member of the American Association of Drilling Engineers (AADE) student chapter and also an AADE representative for his alma mater New Mexico Tech (NMT) at the time of his passing. We would like to honor his memory and all his dedication by starting the Joshua Kamas Scholarship Fund.

The NMT AADE student chapter is comprised of 19 students with four officers and holds monthly meet-ings at the NMT campus. We are an official registered campus club that operates under the Student Af-fairs Council, and is recognized by the national AADE organization.

During monthly meetings we encourage all students, especially freshman and sophomores, to apply for scholarships. This informs students that there is funding available from organizations like AADE that re-ward hard working students that are involved in their community and campus.

The purpose of starting the Joshua Kamas Scholarship Fund is to demonstrate how the generosity of a former NMT student has flourished to help others continue their own education. The profound example Joshua Kamas has set can be immortalized by establishing the scholarship in his name.

The hopes of the AADE student chapter are to collect $15,000 to start the endowment. The interest generated from this amount would be awarded to a NMT AADE student chapter member on an annual basis. I myself have committed to donating $100 to get the fund started. We also have other students, faculty, staff, alumni, and companies who plan to contribute. All donations are tax deductible and re-ceipts will be provided.”

-Written by Tom Shimura (2011, AADE Secretary)

UPDATE

As of 2012, the AADE Student chapter has grown to include 49 active members. The chapter still con-tinues to endorse this scholarship to reach the $15,000 goal. Once the goal is reached, the interest will supplement the scholarship.

If anyone is interested in donating to either of these scholarships, please send a check to the de-partment., to the attention of Karen. The check should be written to the specific scholarship.

SR Adair Memorial Scholarship Fund. With the help from the Adair Family, and Jason Adair, this schol-arship was formed in August 2011.

The family writes, “Mr. Stephen R. Adair grew up in Truth or Consequences, NM and always enjoyed outdoor ac-tivities in the area. He had a cousin that graduated from NM Tech that used to describe the unique geological features found in the Gila Forest and surrounding area. He was always interested in the complex sounding names and various histories of different types of formations. It is little wonder that his career would involve the cutting edges of Geological science. The family and friends of Steve would like to honor and celebrate his exciting and productive life by supporting a Scholarship for engineering students in his name. Steve graduated from the University of New Mexico with a Finance degree and landed a job in Denver with Standard Oil Company in accounts receivable. He soon discovered that the engineers had the interesting, adventurous and high paying positions. Steve asked for a transfer to an exploration rig in the North Sea and was sent to be a roustabout on land rigs in Colorado to learn the basic skills from the mud mixtures to the rigging. His hard work resulted in getting an exciting job aboard a floating exploration ship of the coast of Norway 6 months later. He continued to work offshore rigs in India, Nigeria, Turkey, Egypt, the Caribbean and many other worldwide locations. The only assignment he objected to was as an executive in Houston where he would be assigned to the management of the financial side of the Industry. It is here where he decided to return to college at 40 years of age and with 15 years of hands-on experience on offshore oil and gas rigs. Mr. Adair applied for and was accepted into New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and dedicated himself to earning a degree in Petroleum Engineering to complement his vast level of experience. He graduated with ‘Highest Honors’ [in Petroleum Engineering] and increased his professional network of worldwide contacts from students attending New Mexico Tech. He earned the title of “Engineer of the Year” from the National Engineering Honor Society, Tau Beta Pi. Steve loved to explain the complex science required to drill for oil in extreme locations and remain friendly to the environment. He often compared it to exploring space without knowing what challenges might present themselves drilling for miles into the Earth’s crust from the Ocean’s surface 5000 feet from the bottom of the sea. He created a consulting Company to provide services to the creation of safe energy for the petroleum industry. Increasing the number of American engineers was one of Steve’s goals. He often hired students that demonstrated potential in motivation, science and math. Steve enjoyed sharing his extensive technical knowledge and practical experience with everyone.”

It has been a very exciting year for the New Mexico Tech SPE student chapter. We have stayed busy helping out around campus and also in the community. We have had another increase in our student population; raising our total un-dergraduates to 98 and graduate students to 32.

The fall semester kicked off with our first SPE meeting and the welcome back BBQ at Dr. Chen’s house. The fall semester started off with a major need for fundraising for the SPE Annual Technical Conference in Denver, Colorado. We had a large number of students interested and fundraising was going to be essential for all to attend. We were lucky enough to get 45 students to attend ATCE and represent New Mexico Tech. We also had a PetroBowl Team com-pete at the conference. We are proud of their attempt to compete, and want-ing to represent NMT the first time in four years. After the competition we have seen an increase in the number of students wanting to prepare for next year’s competition in San Antonio, Texas. Any help with questions from fellow students and alumni would be appreciated, send your questions to Karen.

This year the student chapter teamed up with SPE Roswell to Race for the Cure (Komen Central New Mexico) in Albuquerque, NM. We had 8 students who: walked and ran the 5k, and ran the 10k.

We were able to finish the semester with our end of the year BBQ. AADE helped with organizing and cooking at the BBQ. We had a great turn out just before everyone left for winter break.

Returning to Tech for the spring semester means we have a very busy semester ahead of us. Planning for a field trip or two, Wild Well Control School, the Dr. Chen Classic, Senior presentations, and the Langdon B. Taylor banquet. Our goal is to get more stu-dents involved and see 100% in an undergrad attendance at the banquet.

SPE helped AADE with obtaining sponsors for the first annual NMT AADE Clay Shoot. They are trying something new to this area and are hoping to bring in lots of outside attention from the Southeast New Mexico/Texas areas. SPE spent a few days out at the Socorro Gun Range getting it cleaned up prior to the event.

SPE also has volunteered to help out the SWE (Society of Woman Engineers), with their Mud Mission. The end of March SWE is helping out the local Catholic Church that was damaged a few years ago due to heavy rains. Volunteers will be learning to make and apply adobe mud to the church walls. It will be a good experience to help other groups within NMT and Socorro.

To finish off the semester, Senior Design Presentations will be given Thursday, April 26. Following the presentations, SPE will spon-sor the final BBQ of the semester. We look forward to hosting it with all the returning alumni. Friday, April 27th we are playing in the Dr. Chen Classic. The SPE officers plan to repeat their win from last year!! Following golf, the Langdon B. Taylor banquet is scheduled. We have changed the grand prize for the annual fundraiser this year to an Apple Ipad 2. Tickets will be available be-fore spring break, through April and at the banquet registration table, so make sure you buy one or two for a chance to win this amazing prize. We are anticipating another great speaker and look forward to all the alumni that can make it this year.

On behalf of the NMT SPE Student chapter, I would like to thank all our alumni, donors, companies and individuals that helped us this year. Without all your support we would not be the best department on campus. Also, we would like to wish the new officers luck for the upcoming year!
