Chairperson’s
Message
“Where did you learn how
to do that?” The answers
can range from “trial and
error” to “I attended a
training course.” Most
likely “trial and error” in-
cluded many errors along
the way. Attending a train-
ing course takes time
away from the job respon-
sibilities, but can produce
results far beyond your
expectations. A formal
training course creates a
learning environment that
develops skills that leads
to increased knowledge.
Training can be the differ-
ence between barely man-
aging your business and
successfully managing
your business. You can
experience some of the
benefits that training of-
fers: informs you about
efficiencies that can result
in financial gain; develops
your knowledge and skills
about technologies and
methods; and provides an
opportunity to solve prob-
lems using new skills.

Spotlight Events by Brittany Stanley
The best is yet to come" is a quote I live by.
I don't want to ever say "That's as good as it
gets". I want to grow in this industry, learn
new things and amaze people every chance I
get. My name is Brittany Stanley, I own Spot-
light Events - Wedding Planning & Event De-
sign. I have helped decorate and plan hun-
dreds of Weddings in the past 6 years. My
friends would describe me as a perfectionist,
and I believe you have to be to truly succeed
in this industry. I absolutely adore my job, my
clients and my team, and treat each and
every Wedding as if it is my own.
A year ago I set out to finally make the move
to start my very own business. I knew what I
wanted, I knew what Brides wanted, and I
knew how to decorate and plan weddings.
However, I didn't know the first thing about
starting a business. I needed help.
I was listening to the radio one day and heard
about CBDC, and thought maybe they could
help me move things along. I remember the
first time I met Gertie from CBDC, I was so
nervous! I knew what I had to do to make this
business work, I just had to explain my idea
to a stranger first for the first time. Gertie was
so friendly and down to earth, and from the
first meeting onward, I knew she believed in
me.
Gertie and CBDC opened the doors I needed to
get funding and were there anytime I needed
help. The day everything was finalized, Gertie
was genuinely happy for me. I am so thankful
for all they did, helping me follow my dreams.

Sew Far Out by Sheila Devine
A gorgeous blue gown, a well worn ski-doo suit, jeans and a pair of curtains all hang in a sunlit room
overlooking the sea and the islands of Tors Cove. The “shore“ it is said is where the faeries live, goats
talk and dreams come true, if you work hard enough. For Vickie Walsh, owner of SEW FAR OUT a life-
long dream is coming true.
A talented weaver, artist, rug hooker and seamstress, her skills have never included preparing budgets,
business plans or maximizing social media. It was however a referral to CBDC that was the beginning of
her journey into the field of business development and entrepreneurship. Skill as a seamstress was the
beginning, and an awareness that the service she could provide was not readily available in the area.
She knew that courses on business planning, budgeting, advertising and promotion were critical if she
was to turn a skill into a successful business. Critical as well were ongoing workshops and of course
financial advice and support.
Because of the encouragement and assistance of CBDC she now has a steadily growing clientele. Pro-
motion, advertisements, research, budgeting and financial planning have helped her service customers
from the Irish Loop.
From hemming jeans, to altering graduation and bridesmaid’s dresses, suits, drapery, work pants and
even snowmobile suits she is now able to offer great service, competitive rates with a focus on meeting
all of her client’s sewing needs. Business cards, advertisements and “word of mouth” help her promote
the variety and quality of her work. The skills developed through workshops guide her towards future
expansion of a separate workspace which is the next step in her business plan. There is no doubt that
with the ongoing assistance of CBDC she will reach her business goals.
For now, however, the gown, the jeans, the ski-doo suit and the
curtains hang in the window overlooking the ocean awaiting pick-up
or delivery. And of course, this is where the faeries live, goats talk
and dreams come true, if you work hard enough.

The Entrepreneurial Training Fund is established to assist CBDC clients in accessing business
management training by helping to cover up to 90% of the cost of eligible training. This allows
the client to take advantage of necessary training to assist in the success of managing their
business. In addition to individual training, group training workshops are also offered in a vari-
ety of topics.
CBDC Celtic held two Social Media group sessions in November 2014, “Facebook for your
Business” and “LinkedIn for Business”. Allison Stoodley facilitated the two full day ses-
sions which provided entrepreneurs, small businesses, and not-for-profit participants with
insight and guidance for effectively navigating the digital and social media world.
Another training session was held in Febru-
ary 2015, “How to Increase Sales”. Brenda
Kelleher Flight of GDP Consultant facilitated
a well-received workshop on Sales for
small businesses.
All three workshops were well attended and
participants received valuable information
and tips for their businesses.
