Driving, traveling, cruising….isn’t that what these muscle cars we love were made for? Of course, street racing, as well as track racing, were common pas-sions for the muscle car owner. While most of us (?) may not be racing our Chevelles and El Caminos, we certainly love to drive them around, especially with Spring knocking at our doors. By the time you are reading this, or shortly thereafter, Lee and I along with Jay and Lorilee Ashcraft and Janice Reddaway will be cruising’ on down the road toward Route 66. It was also known as “The Will Rogers High-way” (after the humorist), the “Main Street of America,” and the “Mother Road” and was open to travel from 1926 through 1985. Today only broken section remain passable. The song Route 66, composed by Bobby Troup in 1946 and recorded first
by Nat King Cole, was inspired by a trip west from Pennsylvania. The song “celebrate[d] the romance and freedom of automobile travel (Wikipedia)” in post-war America. Our parents and grandparents experienced a new kind of leisure time in the prosperity of those decades, as their autos became a means to escape the daily grind. Route 66, laying asphalt from Chicago, Illinois to Los Angeles, California became fa-mous, at least in part, due to Troup’s lyrics and the 1960’s television series of the same name. In the TV series, two young men traveled cross-country in a, now iconic, Corvette. Now, two young-hearted men and three, dare I say, iconic women will take a different kind of muscle car—two Elkies and one Chevelle—on the same journey. Okay, okay, part of the same journey. We will drive south to Needles, California and pass over the border to catch the first accessible west-end of the Route. We’ll take it through Arizona and up to the Grand Canyon. We’ll probably take a side trip to Mesa Verde before heading back through Colorado and Utah. We will visit Arches National Park and eventually turn north toward home, via Idaho. They say you’ll “get your kicks on Route 66.” Well, we’re about to find out.

Brandon’s El Caminos Brandon got his first El Camino when he was just 8 years old. We were driving in Portland and saw it sitting at the back of a lot. It was complete with a disassembled engine, and the price was right. As we began work we uncovered more and more issues until it wasn’t worth the money to restore, but it still made a great parts car for El Camino #2. Brandon has grown up around the club and always had a fondness for Lee’s original El Camino with the red paint and flames. He has the wheels and tires for the look and his goal is to eventually fix it up. Right now he has a cool car for a high school kid.

Full circle. While recycling some scrap metal, I spotted this old "track" car on a rollback across the yard. I asked the yard manager where it came from and he told me of an older gentleman that passed away in Cresent City, Calif. and he was hired to clean up the yard of scrap metal. This old 66 Chevelle was under some trees in the side yard. He loaded it on the truck and brought it back to Grants Pass. I asked if he was going to bale it and his reply was he couldn't bring himself to crush history. The man already had my vote. I took these pictures of the car and on Monday, went by Paradice Road hotrod shop to show the pictures to Mickey Cox as I knew he'd lived in Cresent City in the 70's. At first he didn't recognizes the car, I'm assuming because of it's sad state of deterioration, but further examination revealed the pinstriped dragon on the quarter panel. Then he saw the picture with "Art's Towing" on the side and the light came on. Mick had built this very car for a guy named Anthony Nunes in 1976 in exchange for lessons on how to drive a log truck. Mick went on to marry Art’s daughter, but that was three, maybe four wives back (you know how those car guys are). Mick went out to see the car in person and as of this writing is making a deal to buy the car. Talk about full circle...
