A poodle with a squashed nose

stares down at me from the fluffy

mountain-sized cumulous above.

Whoops, now my poodle

is Snoopy on a tilted doghouse.

Nothing is permanent in the clouds

or anywhere in the universe

of puppies, dandelions, and ants,

of planets, stars, and galaxies,

except change itself, no fixity

in the firmament, no superglue

holding everything static,

birth and death always hand in hand.

Even stars do not live forever,

have their appointed time and fate.

So no worries, no attachment

to our current situation, no fear

about some future change. Just

exaltation at being here and now.

Something not from his suburban world.

When visiting his grandmother, gone was the

Normally, he lived in parental green grass and tree shaded suburbs of his parents.

The grandparents home was hard held by city streets and alleys

As archaic milkman and horse-drawn wagon wiggled down the narrow minded streets

Delivering daily dairy things that were good;

Milk, eggs, and butter for this tiny neighborhood.

The horse throws his head if the human takes too long– he hates to wait.

Both move down the street in a lazy August memory gait.

BY PAT ANTHONY Somehow in this house fullof children, I am sitting aloneon a saggy brown tweed couchcounting seventeen flieson the ceiling, both flies andceiling unusually high in thisold farmhouse with its fetidsmell of fresh manure almostoverpowering the waft fromsizzling sausage patties mygrandmother fries up in twinskillets on the double stovespreparing a breakfast-for-suppermeal complete with biscuits andgravy made from sticky bitsin the bottom of the pans. She nannies here at the lawyer’scountry mansion being in demand,and tonight she has me, too, on myannual visit ferried like some line itemin a court brief for the fifth weekendin mid-summer and a two hour bus ride away.

I won’t be eating as it would seemsome kind of presumptuous she says andit’s already an overload of strangenessin comparison to where I’ve come fromwhere we waste an hour killing a single flyand where I’ve never seen anyoneincluding my fastidious grandmother sounalarmed at the flitting accumulationcontent to navigate the speckled stucco.

My mother would die before we would everhave sausage patties for supper, choosing firstto stave off hunger with our portion of breadtorn into a glass of milk, though we might addsalt and pepper to help us pretendit’s a real meal, and the closest I’ve ever cometo biscuits and gravy would be the twice-yearlycreamed chipped beef over toast drapinga hard cooked egg on the off chancemy father stayed over for a quick biteof breakfast before heading west again. A door slams, and I hear voices rising on windbringing in another layer of pungent aromas,the flies swirling once so that I almost duckuntil they settle again into a new patternwhile I begin to connect them with imaginary lines,create new constellations with names like horse,cow, and pig, ignore how my tummy rumbles.

Note from Raven Howell In the Northeast, during the raspberry growing season, I am

usually inundated with tons of berries to pick and eat and use in

recipes. It’s a good thing our family enjoys raspberries. We always

have extra bowlfuls to share with our neighbors and friends.

Over the years, I’ve baked dozens of raspberry muffins

(sometimes corn/raspberry), made smooth, cool, raspberry

mousse, pulled many warm raspberry bars out of the oven, popped

them in the center of grilled pears and peaches, and simply topped

them with vanilla ice cream. This summer, I decided to try a cookie

recipe using raspberries. They turned out delicious! Here it goes:

Raspberry Chocolate Chip Cookies

RECIPE & PHOTOGRAPH BY RAvEN HOWELL

Ingredients: (for approximately 24 cookies, depending on the size you form the dough)

¾ cup butter, softened or slightly melted 1 extra large egg2 teaspoons vanilla½ cup granulated sugar½ cup packed brown sugar2¼ cups flour of your choice (oat flour works well in this recipe)1 teaspoon baking soda A few dashes of salt1¼ cups chocolate chips (I like using chocolate chunks, and most will enjoy the combination of raspberry with dark chocolate, but I used milk chocolate chunks. Also, try mixing chocolate and vanilla chips for extra flavor.)1 – 2 cups fresh raspberries (firm, if possible)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Grease or use a non-stick cookie sheet

Cream the butter with both sugars. When the combination is

smooth, let it sit for a couple of minutes, then add the egg and

vanilla. (continued on page 9)

Gently beat in the flour, a teaspoon of baking soda, and a few

dashes of salt. Don’t overbeat it, just mix it on medium speed

or even by hand until it’s well combined.

By hand, stir in the chocolate chips, and finally, add a very

gentle fold of your raspberries.

Form dough into balls of about 1½ to 2 inches in size and

place them on the cookie sheet so that they have room to

bake and have some space between them.

Ever so softly, press the tops down a little with a fork so that

the dough balls are a bit flatter. I use a cookie scoop to make

the cookie dough balls, but you can simply use a large spoon

just as well.

Bake at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes. Take a peek at

them and, if they are browning slightly on the outsides, they

are ready. Take them out and let them cool a bit. Then using

a spatula, transfer the cookies to a wire rack for a final cool

down and a firmer consistency.

I was around six when I first went to the farm. Our

family would stay with Aunty Mae and Uncle Les for a whole

week. On our first day, my uncle put me on his lap on the

tractor. I was terrified.

I played with the cat whose name was Step-and-

a-half and who had fallen into the combine, but lived. In

the mornings, I ate the peaches from the trees out back,

covered with thick cream from the cows that I learned

to milk, reluctantly. I fell into the hog pen one afternoon,

climbed out screaming, covered in mud and their dinner.

In the evening, I gathered the eggs from the chicken

coop, trying to protect my tiny hands while they pecked at

them. Before going to bed, I listened to crickets and caught

fireflies and saw more stars than I ever knew existed.

This was heaven on earth for an inner-city kid who hoped

desperately to be invited back again next summer.

Some say you are inanimate,devoid of soul– misread your role.The morning lawn, you rally then,soak up my perspiration.Protect me from the burning sun,defence against the magpie,marauding lord of its possessive nest.

I’d hoped you would maintain your shape;your brim distorts, convulses out of line.Perhaps you are an anarchist, subversive,a little bent at least.

The years go by, now creases, holes,and stains from our exertions.You’ve earned your rest,you near the end,a useful life well-lived.

Among his many claims to fame, the 17th century French mathematician, physicist, and religious philosopher Blaise Pascal is perhaps best known for what is commonly termed “Pascal’s wager.” That is the philosophical position that it is in one’s own best interest to behave as if God exists, since the possibility of eternal punishment in hell outweighs any advantage of believing otherwise. In other words, it doesn’t pay to ignore something that we can’t actually prove to be true if ignoring it puts us in peril. Kind of like swimming in the ocean while ignoring the possibility that there may be sharks nearby. In that case, it can’t hurt to use a shark repellent, but it can hurt not to use one. So it is with the issue of global climate change. Let’s just say for the sake of argument that the 97% of all climate scientists who are raising alarms about global climate change are just plain wrong, and that the Earth isn’t really rapidly and dangerously warming due to the release into our air of greenhouse gases resulting from the burning of fossil fuels, and so, we do nothing to change things. What do we gain? Take coal for example. Mining coal is a dangerous undertaking. Coal miners risk ruining their health, not to mention shortening their lives, just by doing their jobs. The incidence of pneumoconiosis– what is commonly called black lung– is still rampant among miners despite industry claims. Then there’s the slag that coal mining generates which endangers water quality, not to mention that burning coal produces lethally toxic gases and ash. Remember the acid rain caused by coal burning electric generation plants in the mid-West that was killing Northeast forests? Then there’s the simple fact that coal is no longer a cost-effective fuel and is losing market share. Employment in the coal industry is declining. Companies are going bankrupt. Do we gain anything at all by prolonging our reliance on the “rock that burns” or are we better off by recognizing that using coal as fuel is, like the use of whale oil to light our lamps, rapidly becoming a thing of the past? Then there is the petroleum industry. Think ‘Exxon Valdez,’ or the fire on the offshore oil drilling platform and deep-sea well blow-out in the Gulf of Mexico a few years ago that spewed millions of gallons of petroleum into the Gulf, devastating thousands of square miles of Gulf waters and hundreds of miles of US shoreline. And in both of those cases, the catastrophic environmental results are still with us years after the accidents and likely will extend far into the future. And that doesn’t even take into account the negative effects of the fumes from the burning of that oil had it been put into use. Of course, burning just about anything produces fumes, none of which are either safe to inhale or clean. Which strongly suggests that we ought to be meeting our energy needs in ways that don’t involve burning anything, neither coal nor oil nor gas nor biomass, and instead look to solar and wind and tidal force and technologies still to be invented. Even if all those climate scientists are wrong and global warming is just a natural phenomenon and we humans aren’t the cause, isn’t it better to satisfy our energy needs with fuels that don’t cost anything? Oh sure, the infrastructure for renewable energy generating plants will still cost something to create and to maintain, but that’s true about coal, gas, and oil burning infrastructure, too. But clearly, wind, sun, and water as fuels have to cost less than coal, gas, and oil. On the other hand, if climate scientists are right, that we are careening toward an unlivable environment while we choose to believe otherwise, we are, in effect, opting to ignore the possibility of what amounts to environmental damnation. Better to believe that human-driven global climate change exists and try to do something about it than to bet against ourselves. That’s a bet we cannot win.

This painting, an oil on linen canvas, depicts a cafe scene in Paris, France. Les Deux Magots is one of the most famous cafes located in the Saint Germain des Près Quarter. It once had a reputation as the rendezvous of the literary and intellectual élite of the city. It is now a popular tourist destination. A waiter is standing by a client awaiting her order. A lady is reading the newspaper while eating a piece of cake. The painting tells a story of all the people at the cafe. My paintings tend to grow on viewers. The style is very soft. I used many layers of glaze.

Surreptitiously, I snap two pretzel sticks

into rough quarters that fall silently

beside orange number two pencils aligned

in the curved steel tray of my desk,

stealthily pull down the woodgrain lid

onto a single finger that allows me

to feel the nubbly bits waiting

to stick to my licked finger

ferrying them to my mouth open

behind my upright geography book

(the tallest book I own) and then to be

cadged in my right cheek as I tongue salt.

I must rely on the generosity of friends

(though mother insists they are merely

acquaintances) but who nonetheless now

and then share an entire box of Bachman’s

from the school’s candy store with those of us

privileged to be included in the morning recess

game of Build-a-Castle, thin rods of crispy brown

deliciousness behind a perfect window of cellophane.

I horde mine in a sweaty palm since I don’t jump

as high as the taller girls, slide them up my long sleeve

as we march past the nuns when the bell rings

that ends our momentary freedom, so glad

not to have to smile and say thank you

for Necco wafers tasting of chalk and licorice,

the black ones always overpowering pastels

and so hard to resist crunching loudly

in a too quiet classroom. Concentrate now

on my index finger rolling first pencils

then pretzels in the half-round tray, desk lid

cracked open just enough, I distinguish them

by feel (pencils angled, pretzels bumpy),

roll them from the tray into right hand and,

oh, so slowly move them from hand to mouth.

I love geography.

BUILDING, LOSING, AND REBUILDING TRUST

BUILDING TRUST WITH INNOCENCE When I first started raising foals, I discovered that they all loved to be scratched. If I would walk away, they would leave their moms and follow me. Without any “training,” the foals indicated that I offered safety, comfort, and pleasure, and they were willing to follow my lead. As they grew more rambunctious, I would need to establish boundaries about not running into me or kicking me. A startled shout with upflung arms when they were out of range and had plenty of time to avoid me was all that was needed. If I was consistent, then their behavior was consistent. I never pushed them beyond what they wanted to give me, and so, they always were happy to be with me. It is easy to build trust and attraction with foals because they will trust you until you breach their trust. Thinking about people, I realized we aren’t much different from horses. Children tend to trust others unless and until the day that trust is breached. It doesn’t take much to be trusted by a child. Offer a child unconditional love, consistency, understandable boundaries, safety, and comfort, and you become a magnet for that child. Encourage the child’s strengths, bolster the weaknesses with understanding, establish acceptable boundaries, explained and consistently enforced, and you will raise a well mannered child, confident to take on the challenges of the world– so simple in concept, but difficult sometimes for us humans to accomplish.LOSING TRUST How do we lose trust? So many ways. We breach trust the first time we prove ourselves to be untrustworthy by lying, making and then breaking a commitment, establishing one rule then changing it without notice, responding with irritation, anger, or frustration to normal behavior, not because the child is wrong, but because we can’t or don’t know how to respond in a positive way. None of that is unusual, any more than it is unusual for an overtired child to have a melt down. Why wouldn’t overtired, overstressed adults have their own version of a melt down, bringing out behavior that they would not be proud of if they were well rested and unstressed?REBUILDING TRUST AFTER IT IS LOST While perfectly normal, there is a huge price to pay when you lose someone’s trust, whether a horse’s or a human’s. You can sometimes rebuild trust, but only if you become trustworthy. Even if you change or are different from the one who breached that trust in the past, it will be a more difficult journey to rebuild trust, because

innocent trust has been lost and patterns of reaction, fear, confusion, and self-protection have been put in the place of trust and may flare up in reaction to behavior that you innocently offered. Consider Maverick, a mustang taken off the range as a mature stallion and owned by his fourth owner in less than a year since each of the previous owners had been bucked off if they got on him. Watching him stand in a field, he looked completely relaxed, cocked hip, floppy ears, but when approached, his muscles were tight, not soft and, for the life of me, I could not find an itchy spot on that horse. It occurred to me that living in the wild, a prey animal would not want to show vulnerability to predators. It wasn’t safe. Maverick viewed us as predators whose reasonable requests had to be obeyed, but who were not to be trusted. Over the next couple of weeks, we played with Maverick on the ground on a loose line, inviting him to touch and step on things. He was a very smart horse, self-contained and reserved until, one day, he walked under the scary car wash while at liberty to reach Anne where he put his head into her arms and leaned into her scratch. Once we earned his trust on the ground, we had to convince him that people could be above him and on him without threatening or hurting him. Anne sat on the pipe fence of the round pen and I led Maverick along the fence, stopping next to her. At first, he swung his hind end away from the fence and into the round pen, but over time, he lined up parallel to the fence to give her better access to his itchy back. She then slipped onto him and scratched his back some more. Far from wanting to buck her off, he thought she needed to scratch him some more. We decided to try putting a saddle on Maverick. He stood quietly at liberty while we saddled him, but when he took his first step, he bolted 200 feet bucking the entire way with his hind hooves way up in the air. OK… I spent the next week carrying that saddle with Anne as Maverick walked at liberty behind me, periodically coming up and touching it with his nose. Eventually, I swung it up onto his back, went around and took it off the other side, and scratched him some more. We thought his fear of the saddle was gone, but we weren’t sure. Anne rode Maverick bareback and on a loose rein, asking for a walk, then a trot, then sighed him to a halt. Finally, she asked him to pick up a lope, and he still stopped to her sigh. It was time to see if that would work with the saddle. She climbed a fence and called him. He parked for her at liberty, and she slid on. No problem.

To convince Maverick that people could be above him and on him without threatening or hurting him, Anne sat on the pipe fence of the round pen.

Well, while Maverick had given his heart and soul to Anne, he still had a hair trigger for bucking if he encountered something he did not understand. Anne discovered that the day we were rounding up the herd to bring them in from their pasture turnout. She pulled out her string to encourage a grazing horse to move. Maverick, who had undoubtedly had some unpleasant encounters with swinging ropes, promptly bucked her off, ran fifty feet away, stopped, and stared

as she picked herself up, then returned and put his head into her arms. Our fault. The next morning, we went for a walk to bring in the herd, with Maverick trailing behind Anne as she spun the string at the horses she was bringing in. You could almost hear Maverick say, “Why didn’t you tell me you were aiming that thing at them, not me?” Thinking about Maverick’s distrust of people doing things to him, I realized that this kind of fear, distrust, and unexpected adverse reaction pops up in people all the time and requires the same kind of slow step by step trust building. The saying, “Once burned, twice shy,” captures it well. When we get hurt or badly frightened (mentally, emotionally, or physically), we try to protect ourselves from having that experience repeated. Having been burned, our reactions often seem to have little or nothing to do with the present circumstances or intentions, much to the confusion and frustration of those who love us. We can replace self-destructive patterns of reaction to the past with a willing response to the present, but only if we can identify what the triggers are and slowly work through each one. The steps are similar to those we used with Maverick. Start by building a trusting relationship by being trustworthy and extending your trust. Identify triggers and work on building confidence slowly, pausing and waiting any time tension replaces relaxation, backing off and doing something easier before returning to the trigger. If you find yourself in the process of rebuilding trust that has been lost, there is no point in complaining how unfair it is. Just accept how hard a journey building trust has become because someone, perhaps you, lost trust in a moment of carelessness. By accepting reality, committing to do better this time, and proving that you are trustworthy, slowly, oh so slowly, trust will grow.

caught us in its fall.

So it was that Miss Holland sent us out

into the world that day

at the wonder of all we saw.

BLUE GASCON HOUNDSOLD FASHIONED LARGE BREED HOUNDS

Are you looking for a hunting dog? If so, the American Blue Gascon Hound, one of the largest of the scent hound breeds, could be the perfect choice. They are a multi-purpose game hound, skilled at tracking, chasing, and hunting raccoons, snowshoe hare, coyotes, and all sorts of game. They are friendly, loyal dogs, hard workers when on the hunt, and easy to train as a pet or a hunting dog, responding well to gentle training methods. They are good tempered dogs, typically very energetic and particularly loyal and affectionate to the human and canine members of the family. The breed was developed in the United States from the Grand Bleu de Gascon breed whose origin is in France. American Blue Gascon Hounds are two feet or taller at the shoulder, males weigh from 100 to 135 lbs. and females weigh from 90-100 lbs, have short thick hair, a long neck, a deep chest, and muscular broad hips. The large, moderately oval shape head has a long, heavy muzzle with thick heavy lips, and large open nostrils allowing for a superior ability to pick up scents to follow. They have dark, round eyes and extremely good eyesight, which allows them to work well at night. They have long, thin ears which hang down past their cheeks, and usually curl somewhat. Their medium-length tail is carried high when they are excited or at attention, with a saber-like curve to it. Their compact feet are well-padded with oval-shaped toes. The dogs are typically born

with a great deal of white in the coat, but as they mature, the coat darkens and develops black, blue, and tan markings. They tend to have the loud characteristic vocalizations of baying hounds. The sound does not have a normal sounding bark, but rather a loud bay cry that almost sounds like a short howl. American Blue Gascons make for excellent companions for people who enjoy spending lots of time outdoors. Owners need to be firm, confident, and a consistent “pack leader” in order to bring out the best in the dogs. As with many hunting breeds, they need plenty of exercise and frequent walks. They do better in homes with room to run outside. The breed does not do well cooped up in the house.
