Hawaii Kai Dog Park News Thanks to the anonymous Good Samaritans who put up temporary fencing around
“the swamp” when the sprinkler system was leaking in late May/early June. It was
a big help and all park users appreciate that you were able and willing to pitch in.
The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) was out to replace two broken
valves in late June. Since DPR has 293 parks to maintain on Oahu, comprising
over 6,000 acres of park property, and there are numerous parks with mainte-
nance issues at any given time, the dog park can’t always get priority response
time. Thus, the temporary fencing was a good stop-gap.
All park users can help to improve the dog park by (1) speaking up when you see
something that’s damaged or not working right. The phone number to call is post-
ed on the dog park bulletin board, “What to do if . . .” and (2) pitching in when we
have volunteer work parties at the park.
MAHALO to the volunteers who showed up for our work party on June 26th.
DPR had dropped off a truckload of dirt for us to use to fill holes in the park and
under the fence line. We also collected large rocks to help fill in gaps under the
fence that were big enough for dogs to escape. We moved all those rocks and dirt
with the help of 15 volunteers. When the work was done, we enjoyed a tailgate
pizza party in the parking lot. (Dog park news continued on page 3)
Hawai'i Kai Dog Walk The 9th annual Hawaii Kai Dog Walk,
held on June 2nd, was blessed with rain-
bows from beginning to end. As always,
people and their pooches enjoyed activi-
ties in the dog park before and after the
walk, including our doggie pools, souve-
nir photo booth, and booths provided by
our sponsors and nonprofit exhibitors. If
you had your picture taken by Mark Anderson at the photo booth and forgot to
download your portrait, please visit www.hui-ilio.org and look for the Photo Booth
link on our home page. The photos are still available! (Be sure to make note of
the password for downloading.)
A big mahalo to all the volunteers who worked so hard to ensure that dog walk
participants had a great time. We are especially grateful to the Hawaii Kai Jay-
cees and the Cherry Blossom Festival
Court, who have come out to help us
year after year. And let’s not forget the
generous sponsors who provide supplies,
bottled water, goodie bag gifts and door
prizes. Thanks to our sponsors, every-
one goes home a winner!
This year’s dog food/supplies drive was
another success, thanks to dog walk par-
ticipants as well as sponsors who donat-
ed food, bedding, towels and other items
for less-fortunate dogs. (Continued on
page 3.)

D The aging irrigation system will be an ongoing concern. We recently observed a complete rotation of all the sprinklers in action, and have reported to DPR the location of several sprinklers that are still not functioning properly.
D You may have noticed we now have a storage locker behind the first bench in the big dog park. We use it to store landscaping supplies for the gardeners we hired to pull weeds and re-seed the grass. The gardening sup-plies are also used for volunteer work days. The other storage bins in the small and big dog park remain for volunteer use. They contain supplies such as poop bags to refill the dispensers, trash bags, water bowls (which are washed and put away at night), first aid kits (for people and dogs) and cleaning supplies.

DID YOU KNOW?.........
D Pet ownership on Oahu has grown steadily over the years with 58% of Oahu households reportedly owning pets (45% of households own one or more dogs). Among Oahu pet owners in 2012, according to the latest Ward Research study,
The rate of dog ownership continues to grow, while the rate of cat ownership continues to shrink.
The incidence of pet ownership is higher in urban areas (such as East Honolulu at 63%), as compared to those living in Urban Honolulu (38%).
D Despite the City’s failure to respond to the need for more dog parks
on Oahu over the past four years, we now have a new city
administration and new hope. The Dog Park Advocates Coalition
(or Dog PAC for short) recently met with new Parks & Recreation
Director Toni Robinson, who has pledged to look into all dog park
requests, past and current. A case in point: the district manager for
the Makiki parks district is now actively in talks with the Makiki dog
park advocates about a proposed new dog park location.
D Various property developers and community associations recognize
the need for dog parks and are helping to alleviate the situation. For
example, Ewa Gentry now has its own dog park alongside a
playground and an adult exercise area. They are also helping to
prove to the Parks Department (which opposes “mixed use” parks)
that mixed use parks work great for the community!
D There are several nationwide dog organizations working to repair
the sullied reputation of pit bulls. For example, Angel City Pit Bulls
in Los Angeles holds meet-and-greet events in schools and nursing
homes to show the public that pit bulls can be just as sweet and
gentle as any other
breed. They also hold
free training sessions
and invite the public
to interact with their
pit bull ambassadors.
They say it’s because
of irresponsible
breeders and those
who promote dog-
fighting that the pit
bull’s reputation has
been damaged. In fact, there is no statistical evidence that the
incidence of dog bites by pit bulls is higher than any other dog
breed. But the incidence of bad publicity is higher for the pit bull. A
dog’s lineage does not matter as much as its conditioning, the
experts say. If you buy a dog with the intention of having only a
watch dog and not a family pet, leave him unneutered, chain him in
the yard, and allow him limited interaction with people and other
dogs, then you have an aggressive dog in the making.
Making new friends at the Hawaii Kai Dog Park.

Hui 'Ilio Hawai'i - Who Are We?
Hui 'Ilio Hawai'i is a 501(c)(3) non-
profit corporation that was estab-
lished to promote public dog parks
and to promote responsible dog
ownership.
Its officers and directors receive no
compensation. Activities of the or-
ganization are carried out with the
help of volunteers and sponsors.
Our first objective was to make the
Hawai'i Kai Dog Park a reality. Now
that the park is open, we help to
support it through the City’s Adopt-a
-Park program. We also reach out
to help other dog groups who are
trying to establish dog parks in their
respective communities.
We support organizations, publica-
tions, and activities that promote
responsible dog ownership by en-
couraging licensing, vaccination,
exercise, socialization, and the good
behavior training of dogs using hu-
mane training methods.
