Third MEWIS Duct installation in N-KOM

N-KOM CONNECTS

On 18 June 2013, Cap Felix be-

came the first vessel from Greek

company Euronav to dock at N-

KOM.

The ABS-class Suezmax tanker was

in for general drydocking repairs

such as renewal of steel plates,

overhauling of cargo pumps, moor-

ing winch repairs, renewal of rudder

carrier bearings, atmospheric con-

denser re-tubing, overhauling of

main engine turbochargers and

units, propeller treatment and

switchboards inspection.

A key element of the repair was the

installation of a MEWIS duct on the

vessel, making it the third such in-

stallation carried out by N-KOM to

date.

The MEWIS duct installation is in-

creasingly becoming popular with

ship owners due to the better

course stability it offers aside from

the lower fuel consumption and

reduced vibration in vessels, result-

ing in big savings for our clients.

N-KOM is also exploring and devel-

oping other green shipping solutions

such as the main engine gas injec-

tion (ME-GI), Ballast Water Treat-

ment System (BWTS), Scrubber

technology and LNG bunkering solu-

tions to enhance our value offering to

clients and do our part for the environ-

ment.

From the Superintendent’s desk (Euronav) all compelling reasons for us to try out

N-KOM’s services.

In your opinion, what differentiates

N-KOM from other yards you have been

in?

Though faced with some challenges be-

ing a new player in the industry, N-KOM

is able to carry out the job at hand well

and deliver on time. What impressed us

was the level of motivation and commit-

ment from all personnel to providing

How has your experience at N-KOM been

so far?

I am very satisfied with the overall per-

formance so far. The yard’s safety stand-

ard is excellent!

What made you decide to carry out the

repairs in Qatar?

The references received from other com-

panies that have previously docked at N-

KOM, recommendation from N-KOM’s

Agent and tender competitiveness were

quality services.

Would you come back again to N-KOM for

subsequent repair jobs?

We will definitely consider N-KOM as a de-

sirable candidate for our vessels due for

drydocking or requiring repair services in

the Arabian Gulf in the future.

First Ballast Water Treatment System retrofit completed

N-KOM has undertaken its first Ballast Water Treatment Sys-

tem (BWTS) retrofit for RasGas chartered LNG carrier Al

Utouriya. Operated by NYK LNG Shipmanagement, the Q-Flex

vessel was installed with Ocean Saver’s 3000m3 /h capacity

Mark II system (DNV-approved) during its drydocking period

at the shipyard.

Fabrication and installation of all steel supports, major com-

ponents and pipework were carried out concurrently with oth-

er general repairs by the N-KOM project team.

Highlights of the retrofit:

Installation of C2E disinfectant unit and steam heaters

Installation of main filter units and pumps on filter plat-

form

Installation of C2E filters units and C2E pumps on the

C2E platform

Installation of hydraulic power pack unit on sub-platform

Complete modification on ballast piping

Sealing our position as a centre

of excellence for gas carrier re-

pairs, N-KOM has completed 18

such repairs this year, with 7

drydocking and repairs carried

out in the past month alone.

On the recent STASCO LNG carri-

er Bu Samra, repairs com-

menced prior to the vessel’s arri-

val at the shipyard. Our cryogenic

team was mobilized onboard the

vessel at Fujairah anchorage,

during which they removed com-

pander pipes and other equip-

ment to be overhauled whilst en

route to N-KOM for the refit. This

not only shortened the repair

period at the shipyard but was

also a major cost saving option

for STASCo.

Another success for N-KOM’s ‘flying squad’

PEM (Saudi) and Iraq Drilling Company.

With our API certification (Spec Q1,2B,4F, ISO/

TS 29001 and ISO 9001) and extensive fabri-

cation sites, N-KOM has undertaken various

N-KOM GREEN Thrust 2020 As part of our corporate social responsibility programme,

Green Thrust 2020 is an initiative aimed at environmental

protection and preservation.

The first activity organized by the Green Thrust Committee

was a beach clean-up earlier this year. Subsequently, var-

ious other campaigns and activities have been carried out

targeted at reducing food wastage and energy conserva-

tion.

The winner of the logo designing competition held by the

committee, Najeeb Chullian Ahamedkutty, was awarded

with a cash prize and certificate by our CEO at the recently

concluded Management Rally.

We at N-KOM nurture and develop our

young talents by actively identifying high

potential employees and prepare them for

future leadership roles.

Three engineers representing different op-

eration trades were chosen from N-KOM to

embark on a Diploma in Marine and Off-

shore Technology, conducted by Ngee Ann

Polytechnic (Singapore). They joined 21

others from the global Keppel Offshore &

Marine (KOM) network on this programme,

which had been specially tailored to en-

hance their technical knowledge and famil-

iarize them with best work practices and

the working culture at KOM’s HQ.

The intensive programme covered aspects

of naval architecture, marine and offshore

design, oil and gas production and offshore

engineering. In addition to comprehensive

technical knowledge, the participants were

exposed to operations at Keppel Shipyard

through on-the-job training and attended

(cont’d)

Diploma course for N-KOM’s budding leaders

“The course has given me in-depth understand-

ing of offshore and sub-sea equipments on

offshore rigs, which is relevant to my nature of

work. Learning this on top of marine engineer-

ing and naval architecture has not only given

me a better grasp of projects and equipment

dealt with in the offshore and onshore sector,

but also an edge over my peers in the same

field. The programme has honed my leadership

and teamwork skills, which will enable me to

become a better team player and an effectively

guide my team to take N-KOM to the next level

of excellence.”

Project Engineer (Offshore)

Volume 1, Issue 2 Page 11 TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

“The course gave me in-depth understanding be-

yond the basic procedures and methodologies

employed in conversion and new build projects.

Apart from classroom sessions, practical on-the-

ground training at Keppel Shipyard taught me that

active engagement with sub-contractors allowed for

increased efficiency and productivity. I am very

encouraged by the support received from N-KOM

and am even more motivated and committed to my

job (steel work) and aspire to become a leader in

this section in the near future.”

“A deeper understanding of the theoretics behind

the business has definitely given me an upper-hand

when dealing with vessel superintendents. The pro-

gramme has taught me that safety and productivity

can be enhanced through closer supervision and

regular workforce engagement. It was also a great

opportunity to share and learn best practices and

standards from across Keppel’s global business

units. With these newly acquired skills and

knowledge, I look forward to continue my challeng-

ing and fulfilling career at N-KOM and move on to

project management in the near future.”

structured trainings on risk manage-

ment, safety and quality systems.

Despite their hectic schedules, the par-

ticipants made the most of their free

time and managed to explore the city

with their new found friends and formed

lasting bonds with other leaders from

around the world.

“I would like to congratulate the three

of them on the successful completion of

the course and am confident that the

invaluable skills acquired through this

experience would enable them to be

better leaders in the future,” said Mr

Abu Bakar, CEO of N-KOM.
