Institute of Internal Auditors — Philadelphia Chapter
October 2011 Volume 1 Issue 1
Audit Scope
Dear Chapter Members,
Well, here we are in another October baseball season full of hope and promise, and…..oh well, better luck next year. I
hope your fall seasons are faring better than that of our Phillies and Eagles. Our Chapter has taken the field for this year,
and has already posted some winning events, thanks to Jonathan Marks and his Programs team.
On September 14, Alec Arons from Experis (formerly Jefferson Wells) hosted a one-hour webinar entitled “Evolving
Competencies for Internal Auditors”; nearly 150 attendees participated. Our thanks to Experis for sponsoring this event.
Rich Sheaffer and his team at the Federal Reserve Bank hosted a CAE networking breakfast for 25 CAEs on September 16.
Luke Tilley, Regional Economic Advisor with the FRB, presented an “Outlook for the US and Regional Economy.” Thanks
to Todd Havens and Marie Hendrixson for coordinating the event.
Looking ahead, on Friday, October 21, Crowe Horwath and Cozen O’Connor will host a half-day seminar at the Marriott
in Conshohocken with the theme “White Collar Crime.” Speakers from both the accounting and legal community will
discuss related topics such as the Dodd-Frank Act, FCPA, and the UK Bribery Act.
One of our Chapter marquis events is the annual fall conference which is scheduled this year for Monday, November 21 at
the Marriott Downtown. Our conference committee led by Jonathan Marks and Amy Gagliardi has put together a great
program! Sandra Cartie, CAE from Bristol-Myers Squibb, will kick off the conference. Former governor, the Honorable
Edward G. Rendell, will speak about good governance practices, drawing from both his public and private careers. Also,
one of the most active sports personalities in Philadelphia and host of Comcast SportsNet, Michael Barkann, will provide a
lighter touch, chronicling his experiences with the Philadelphia sports community. Complementing these exciting speakers
will be a full day of breakout sessions covering an array of topics which are interesting and relevant to our profession.
Come join us for 8 CPE credits, continental breakfast, sit-down lunch and a cocktail hour after the event.
Our annual joint event with ISACA is scheduled for December 6 and will be hosted by KPMG at its Philadelphia office on
16th and Market streets. Check out this 6-hour event to learn about challenges and solutions in the areas of data
security and privacy, particularly in a “cloud computing” environment.
I encourage you to access the Chapter website at http://www.theiia.org/chapters/index.cfm/view.events/cid/5 to stay
connected. I will also periodically send informational e-mails outlining Chapter events and news to keep you informed.
Please keep your IIA contact information current so we can be sure you receive Chapter and event information.
I look forward to your continued interest and support, and hope to see you at a future Chapter event.
Best Regards,
Jerry

CIA Review Course
Time Is On Your Side
"I don't have the time." "My family takes up all my time in the evenings." "I get too tired
at night to study." Does this sound familiar? If you are a CIA candidate, chances are you
have previously uttered some variation of one or more of these statements.
Unfortunately, there isn't a "one size fits all" solution to these problems. You have to
start by being honest with yourself. What sacrifices are you willing to make to better your
professional life? What times of the day are you the most productive? Does a quiet or busy
study space work better for you?
On average, candidates should dedicate 10-20 hours per week studying for the CIA exam.
Therefore, you will need to determine what time-consuming activities can temporarily be
given up or deferred until after you have completed the CIA exam. These sacrifices can be
anything, like giving up your favorite morning talk show for a couple of months or not going
out to dinner with friends as often.
Once time has been carved out, you must determine when is the best time to study. Many
people are most productive early in the morning, when they are fresh and usually not
disturbed. This time of day might be good for working parents. They can get up before the
children start their day and get a solid hour or two of undisturbed study time. An added
benefit is that you complete your CIA review first each day, not later as a last priority.
Others might prefer to study at night. Late hours after friends, family, or roommates are no
longer around to distract you for whatever reason. Again, you must be the one to determine
when the best and most productive time to study is for you.
When you study might even be determined by where you study. Do you need a nice quiet space?
Will you need to go to the library to avoid regular distractions? If so, you will need to
schedule your study sessions based on when the library is open. You might find that you can
fit in an hour or two of study time during your commute or while at the gym. No matter where
you study, you want to make sure that the time is well spent and productive. You don't want
to have to go back and review things you just studied because you couldn't concentrate due
to distractions or because you were too sleepy.
Ultimately, if you are honest with yourself and set up a regular schedule with clear
objectives, you will get into a routine and see how you can manage your time effectively.
May I hear from you? Do you have feedback on what you have read or suggestions on future
topics? Maybe you are studying for the exam or have recently passed and want to share
tactics you used. Email Melissa Leonard, your Chapter Coordinator, at [email protected]
<mailto:[email protected]> with your questions and feedback.
Remember, as a Greater Philadelphia Chapter member, you will receive a discount on Gleim
material. Gleim has been helping CIA candidates pass the CIA exam since 1980. Contact
Melissa at 800.874.5346, ext. 131, or [email protected] to take advantage of your
chapter discount or if you have any questions.

Upcoming Event
The term “white-collar crime” was first introduced by Edwin Sutherland in 1939 during a
speech to the American Sociological Society. According to his definition, white-collar crime entails “a crime committed by a person of respectability and high social status in
the course of his occupation.” Loosely speaking, a white-collar crime is any illegal commercial activity. Depending on the severity, white-collar crime can violate civil and/or
criminal statute and be punished by fines or, imprisonment.
Learn about the latest white-collar crime issues affecting today’s organizations from the experts at Cozen & O’Connor. Topics may include the Public Corruption (i.e. Foreign
Corrupt Practices Act), Corporate Embezzlement and Accounting Fraud, Healthcare Fraud, Securities Fraud, and Mortgage and Bank Fraud.
Cost: Members $75.00
Non-members $90.00
