Anguilla = Paradise

If there is ever a place which could be listed in the dictionary to de-scribe the word paradise it should be Anguilla. The beaches in An-guilla are some of the most beauti-ful and impressive, anywhere. The unsuspecting visitor is speechless on first glimpse. Thus, more and more Europeans, Americans and Canadians are being lured to the lovely shores of this special little Caribbean isle. Anguilla offers the discerning visitor an incredible jour-ney to a world of sensuous delights. Their world –acclaimed beaches of azure-blue crystalline waters,

ringed by miles and miles of daz-zling pristine-white sands, and vast seascape where scuba divers can discover the multiplicity of tropical marine life - among some of the fin-est coral reefs and dive sites in the world. Add to all this the culture

and folklore of the island’s people, their world class cuisine, friendly and hospitable residents, visitors can un-wind and succumb to the beauty and tranquility of Anguilla. Anguilla’s National Culinary Team was the Toast of the Town at the 1997 “A Taste of the Caribbean” Culinary and Bartender Competition held in Puerto Rico. Anguilla won a total of

22 awards in both individual and team competitions.

As guest of the Anguilla Tourist Board Caribbean Connection brought its production crew and cameras to Anguilla’s paradise. Which became the best location shoot ever. We have been on many wonderful location shoots including Jamaica and I found that each

Island has its own unique features, including ecological sites, sports, food, and entertainment such as carnival. Each island host their own customized version of carnival and the Anguilla style Carnival is cer-tainly energetic and exciting.

ing years there was an add-mixture with the further arrival in Trinidad of Madeiran Por-tuguese, some more Spanish, Chinese from south China, and Indians- mainly from the eastern part of India. These combined cul-tural elements and the urbanization of the Carnival, plus a small increase in general wealth became the recognizable foundation of the modern Carnival. After the Second World War, and with an infusion of American money from military

spending, there was an euphoria in celebration of an even greater free-dom in the Allied vic-tory over facism.

Springfield Massachusetts will join a growing list of major Metropolitan Cities across the country and around the world which host their own an-nual carnival event. Cities like New York, Miami, Houston, Hartford, Bos-ton, Baltimore, and Countries like Toronto Canada, Brazil, Barbados, Jamaica, Germany and many others.

Springfield is the latest in New England to celebrate Carnival as an annual summer event joining with New York, Boston and Hartford Connecti-cut. The New England Carni-vals is based on the Carnival of Trinidad and Tobago, which has its origins almost one hun-dred and fifty years ago. It was then a pre- lenten celebration on plantation estates where French and African cultures, mythologies, and escapism intertwined to create a baccha-nalia of freedom. In the ensu-

This dynamism of these post war celebra-tions continues unabated in the Caribbean, so much so that today the Carnival in Trini-dad is referred to as "the Mother of All Carnivals". The most recognizable manifes-tation of Carnival is the creation of some of the most stunning costumes to be seen any-where in the world. These costumes have strong historical and mythological origins, and seek to convey a message to the audi-ence. Carnival is now seen as street theatre on a grand scale. It has been copied around the world, and there are now 41 Trinidad style Carnivals in major cities on the globe.

Springfield Carnival is held annually on August 18th and is presented by The Springfield Carnival Association which was founded in 1999 and is a member of the International Carnival Association. Since its creation the organization has been involved with numerous community events while planning their carnival.
