  • FOREWORD

    We the students of Christ Academy Junior College proudly present the 6th edition of the “Feathers

    of Hope” a magazine expressing our creativity, opinions and views on current issues.

    The incredible talent of the students makes this publication really special.

    This magazine consists of various sections like Poetry, Articles, Photography, Short story writing,

    Art, Music, Dance, News and Views, Sports and the Hindi section through which the outstanding

    creativity of the students is portrayed.

    The design and the compilation of the magazine is done by CBSE Class 11 Mass Media students with

    true dedication and hard work. Great efforts went into collecting the news and articles of latest

    updates.

    The editing of the magazine is done by the Editorial Board with meticulous reading and rereading of

    the stories, articles and poems published. All correspondents worked hard to get this dream come

    true with determination and team work.

    Thus, the magazine is the true reflection of the 21th century learning skills- Communication,

    Collaboration, Creativity and Critical Thinking. It highlights the importance of positive

    communication in the campus.

    Sincere thanks to Jochan sir for the constant support and guidance, for staying as the backbone of

    this magazine in each and every step. Heartfelt thanks to the management of Christ Academy and

    the Principal, Rev. Fr. Dr. Joice without whose encouragement this wouldn’t have been possible and

    obviously a bunch of thanks to the students who are actively participating and providing exemplary

  • 2020 In 20- The Year passed by! 1. January: The Australian Bushfires continue from December 2019. The fires burned a record

    47 million acres of land, displacing thousands of residents and killing over 30 people.

    2. January 2nd: ISRO chief K Sivan declares Thoothukudi to be India’s second satellite launch

    port. The port will have a total area of over 2,300 acres and will be the second satellite launch port,

    the first being Sriharikota.

    3. January 8th: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle step back from their public duties as senior

    royals, becoming the first couple to do so. They took this step to become more financially

    independent.

    4. January 31st: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland officially exits the

    European Union and effectively entered an 11-month transition period set to end on 31st December

    2020. During this period, UK remains in the Customs Union and Single Market of the EU but it is

    not involved in the political institutions of the EU.

    5. February 5th: Impeachment proceedings against US President Donald Trump come to a

    conclusion. The President of the United States is not impeached. The trial was started due to his

    attempts to force Ukraine to investigate Hunter Biden, Joe Biden’s son.

    6. February 9th: Parasite sweeps the Oscar awards. It becomes the first Non English movie to

    win the best picture award. The movie is a Korean movie directed by Bong Joon-ho.

    7. March 11th: The COVID-19 is declared as a global pandemic by the WHO. A pandemic is

    defined as a disease that is prevalent all over a country or all over the world.

    8. March 25th: The Government of India declares a lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

    The lockdown halts all economic activity and many stranded workers are seen walking back to their

    hometowns.

    9. May 5th: India China skirmishes on the Ladakh border start. The skirmishes involve major

    check posts and geographical features on the border. The skirmishes intensified and reached the

    most serious point on June 12th.

    10. May 25th: George Floyd, a Black citizen of Minneapolis is killed when he was being arrested

    by the police. These racial attacks lead to widespread protests in the US and internationally under

    the Black Lives Matter movement. The main aim of the movement was to protest against racial

    discrimination all over the world.

    11. June 21st: The Arctic records its highest temperature in over 12,000 years at an alarming

    38°C.

    12. July 29th: The National Education Policy 2020 was approved by the Union Government

    replacing the previous National Education Policy of 1986. The new policy makes education

    compulsory from the age of 3 to the age of 18. This is a change from the previous 5 years to 14 years.

    The HECI to govern all forms of higher education. The selection of subjects after 10th will no more

    be based on streams but subjects that the student chooses.

  • 13. August 4th: A large amount of ammonium nitrate stored at the Beirut Port in Lebanon

    exploded, leaving over 200 people dead, 6,500 people injured and over 300,000 were left homeless.

    A total property damage of USD 15 Billion was recorded. The blast was felt in Turkey, Syria, Israel

    and parts of Europe The US Geological Survey detected it as a seismic event with 3.3 magnitude. It

    is considered to be the largest non-nuclear explosion in history.

    14. September 17th: Astronomers discover phosphine in Venus atmosphere. They consider these

    trace s as potential signs of life on the planet.

    15. September 27th: The Parliament of India passes three bills: Farmers Produce Trade and

    Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act,

    2020; Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services

    Act, 2020. The three acts have been collectively called the Farm Reform Bills 2020. Protests erupt

    as farmers from all over Northern India head to Delhi to demand the repeal of these acts.

    16. November 7th: Joe Biden becomes the President elect of the United States of America after

    defeating the incumbent President Donald Trump in the elections. His running mate Kamala Harris

    becomes the vice president elect, becoming the first Black and Asian woman vice president of the

    United States of America.

    17. November 10th: Bihar Legislative assembly elections end on November 7th. Results declared

    on November 10th. The NDA declared as the winner of the elections with 125 seats and the

    Mahagathbandhan forming the opposition with 110 votes.

    18. November 14th: India enters a technical recession as the economy contracted by 7.5% in the

    Q2 of the current fiscal year. The Government announced a stimulus package of 2.65 Lakh Crore

    rupees, accounting to about 15% of national GDP to revive the economy.

    19. November 18th: Pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and BioNTech announce their COVID-19

    vaccine to be 90% effective in a first glance at their results after finishing Phase 3 of the vaccine trials

    involving around 44,000 volunteers.

    20. December 2nd: The government of UK clears the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer Inc.

    and BioNTech SE for first public availability. This follows months of rigorous trials and data given

    by statisticians and medical experts. This makes UK the first country in the world to roll out the

    vaccine

    If we join hands, it cannot defeat us at any rate

    If we don't, then we have sealed our fate.

    So, how do we go green?

    Asks every inquisitive teen

    Do not be nature mean

    This yields great results, I have seen.

    Why don't we carpool?

    This can help us keep our environment cool

    From this we can deduce

    That by doing this global warming can reduce.

    By going green, we can do ourselves a big favour

    The effects of which we can later savor.

    Going green is the only way to fight

    This is how nature and we, can see a brighter light.

    There's an obvious reason you chose this road

    There's a sad, sad truth you come back here.

    The truth, you were taught that nobody cares.

    You choose to believe it without asking questions

    You're feeding the feelings with selfish confessions.

    It's guilt that keeps you on this long lonely road.

    Can you write the wrong stories that nobody chose?

    Can you dare to believe that there's better to come?

    That someone will be home soon and you are that one?

    Hold on, Pain ends

    Briefly visible above the vapor,

    Gathering the last of the light;

    Smoke mingled with mist,

    She walked down the deserted path.

    Swirling through the misty scene her thoughts,

    Seeking the broken remnants of her yester droughts;

    With nonchalance colouring the scenario grey;

    She stood still as the world echoed black.

    Pulling her deeper into the eerie dark,

    Her sorrow reflecting back in shattered bits;

    Orphan and abandoned, she walked the

    alley,

    Solitude enveloping the tiny Evangeline.

    Her life, a desperate note,

    Where one could scribble up a pile;

    Her life a twig,

    To bend and then break.

    She cannot but hide, skin, hair,

    And all with no words her lip can claim;

    In the wilderness with her bare feet,

    She glanced up to see and sea of stars;

    In the midst of silver studs, a silver ball.

  • An Act of True Love

    In a kingdom called Monaco, there lived a rich man who had

    lost his wife twelve years ago. He Had a son, Roy, who was

    working as an army man in his kingdom.

    Roy had a childhood friend named Simon. One day when they

    were walking near the borders of their kingdom, soldiers from

    their enemy kingdom attacked them.

    The soldiers of the other kingdom caught hold of Simon. Roy

    being his friend, tried to save him from the enemies. While

    doing so, he injured himself badly. As a result, he died within a

    few hours. But Simon was safe. Roy gave his life for his friend.

    As a memory, Simon painted a portrait of Roy and presented it

    to Roy’s father. As years passed, Roy’s father decided to sell the

    paintings that he had in his collection. He organised a show of

    his collections. He sold many of them but everyone rejected the

    painting given to him by his late son’s friend. Finally, there was

    a poor man who wished to buy that painting. Roy’s Father gave it to him and said, “I will give you all

    my land and belongings to you”.

    He had promised himself that whoever buys the painting, they would get all his property. The poor

    man becomes rich overnight. Roy’s father decides to live in an old age home till his death.

  • JOY OF MOMENTS!

    The Journey as a Dancer

    “The Job of feet is walking, but their hobby is dancing.”

    I dance because I find immense joy in doing so. Dancing is something that I always enjoy and I can

    indulge into it for long hours. It is something that

    takes me to the height of ecstasy. I would like to

    believe that being a dancer is the whole point of

    my life. I am able to dance wherever life takes me

    to. It all started with my entry into Infosys. I was

    part of their dance team called Parichay. Dancing

    with this team moulded me into a flawless dancer

    and that was where my talent was recognized

    first. We have a YouTube channel now called

    “FlyingFootz”. It was this teams’ shared work

    that we won the all the prizes in a single

    competition called “CDS-Limelight Inter-

    corporate Dance Competition” that was an

    achievement.

    Another great privilege was when we danced at the

    opening ceremony of the IPL 2017 with Benny Dayal

    and Kriti Sanon in association with the Don Bosco

    Dance company Mumbai. My dancing journey

    continues till date.

    Recently I, along with my sisters started a YouTube

    channel called “NYKA367”. Hoping for the best

    because I believe that I am a chiseled and shaped

    dancer by destiny. With each step I put, I would like

    to continue this fabulous journey till my last breath.

    My Qualification in Art

    I am happy to see my shelf in my living room replete with prizes, rolls of honour, trophies and certificates but the urge to do well and compete with the best in the field lingers on in my memory. This competitive spirit is all that keeps me going and aiming higher. An artist is never satisfied as there are newer avenues to be reached. I have completed a bachelor’s degree in Art. I wish to pursue

    my masters, but I am underage and must wait till I am 16 to do the same and realize my dream! I have been putting up stalls in Chitra Santhe from the past six years and was even interviewed as the youngest Canvas Artist.

    I have sold many of my paintings. I also take drawing classes online as well as offline and have students of different age levels, the highest being 65 years and the lowest four years.

    Art relaxes my mind and has helped me increase my memory power and concentration. I am always thankful to my parents and teachers who helped me grow in this field and would like to thank the CAJC who gave me this opportunity to pen my experiences. Thanks, CAJC for considering me to be a

    budding artist and a young achiever!

    My Experiences and Views on the Year 2020

    The year 2020 was a difficult year for all of us, and

    we saw many ups and downs throughout this

    year. We are in midst of a deadly global pandemic

    caused by COVID-19 because of which we are

    locked in our homes. All our daily activities like

    work, exercise, recreation and the society around

    which our lives revolved seem temporary. This

    pandemic has taught us that our home and

    valuable relationships are with us in all situations

    and will always help and support us. We all have learned something either in a good or a bad way

    this year. I would like to share lessons that I learned throughout this roller coaster of a year. The very

    first thing was valuing relationships. In this pandemic situation, we realised our lives and the lives

    of our loved ones are the only treasure we have. Though we were very far from our near and dear

    ones, we could contact them through various apps. And a very important and an interesting thing to

    be mentioned about is online education. None of us ever imagined that one day, we would attend

    school virtually. This pandemic taught us that no amount of success or fame defines one's happiness.

    We should never take life for granted, life is the most precious asset that anyone can have and will

    slip away, even before you know it. This pandemic made us realise everything is temporary whether

    it's our daily routine, jobs, shopping or hanging out. In short, you cannot control what happens, but

    you can control how you react to the situation. These bad days will end soon and we will live our

    normal life very soon. Many people even discovered their hidden talents, which they did not know

    they had. If you think people judge you because you try new things and don't succeed in it, then the

    best solution is don't tell anyone until you succeed in it and keep following your heart. Lastly, I would

    like to say that never ever run with life, just walk through it while living. Life is very simple, do not

    complicate it with your desires. Living your life simply has its own beauty in it, and this pandemic is

    a sign to see that beauty of life.

  • Save Girl Child

    Discrimination against girls in India has been going on since a long time. Even today there are several sections of the Indian society where the girl child is treated as a burden. While several privileges are given to the boys; girls are often restricted to the confines of houses and given very little or no opportunities to learn and grow in life. It is a matter of great shame that cases of female infanticide are still reported. As per the figures of 2011 census, India has 924 females per 1000 males. In such a scenario, the role of the government and NGO’s becomes all the more important in order to ensure that girls are allowed to be born and flourish in life.

    In order to achieve true empowerment. It is important that we begin with the children. This is because girls of today are the women of tomorrow. The role of social welfare organizations is critical here as it is not possible for the government to reach every corner of the country. As responsible citizens we can support organizations which work for the eradication of female infanticide and women empowerment.

    Discrimination in 2020

    The year 2020 has been a roller coaster for all of us. We not only experienced a global disease

    pandemic, the COVID-19, we also experienced the negative effects of various forms of

    discrimination. The belief that the virus originated in China, saw

    a rise in racist attacks against members of the East and South

    East Asian community. In most nations, a large number of

    doctors are of Asian origin. In many developed nations, there

    have been reported cases where these frontline healthcare

    workers have been attacked and have experienced discrimination

    at the hands of the majority. In some cases, patients have not

    agreed upon being treated by doctors who looked Asian, because

    they wanted to avoid contracting the disease. This racism was not

    only fuelled by news of the origin of the virus, but also by

    comments made by some important leaders who called the virus

    the “Chinese Virus”.

    Such discrimination was not faced only by certain racial groups.

    Added to such discrimination, social media and certain news websites propagated fake news against

    certain groups of people all over the world. In some countries, asylum seekers and immigrants were

    seen as carriers of the virus and were avoided and marginalised. As such discrimination started to

    reduce, there arose many new cases of systemic racism and discrimination by the administration

    against certain groups of people. The horrendous killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis in the

    United States America, was condemned all over the world and led to the now famous “Black Lives

    Matter” movement. This movement was opposing systemic racism all over the world. The movement

    spread out of the United States and spread internationally. Although we are in the year 2020,

    discrimination exists and many people do not accept that it is a major problem we face.

  • Ignorance is a greater mistake than making the mistake without knowing it is wrong. If we treat

    discrimination as an everyday problem, it will continue to survive and will constantly plague our

    lives. As we have seen, discrimination not only destroys society and communities, it can lead to loss

    of life and loss of near and dear ones. Discrimination of any form is not acceptable and thus should

    not be tolerated. Equality is one of the pillars that supports the society. If this pillar crumbles, the

    society will be thrown out of balance and will fall into total despair. The world in which we live is

    being held together peacefully due to the practice of equality and mutual respect amongst all the

    countries. But in recent times, this equality is weakening and mutual respect is fading away.

    The reduction of mutual respect has, over time, increased the distrust between various groups. This

    has led to violence and skirmishes amongst the groups. In the last one year, there have been many

    recorded cases of hate crimes against various

    groups. Most social scientists attribute this to

    the rising belief of superiority of one group

    over another. Governments, NGOs and

    educational institutions should work towards

    creating awareness about equality of all the

    people, irrespective of race, religion, ethnicity,

    nation of origin or gender. The only way to

    combat discrimination is spreading awareness and making conscious decisions regarding what we

    do, choose or say so that we do not hurt other people. Treating discrimination as a real-life problem

    that has to be uprooted from society and working together to bring about the change should be our

    main aim. Making conscious decisions regarding what we do, speak or choose will prevent us from

    hurting people. The best option would be to come forward to support and help victims of

    discrimination. We must work together and stand up against people who discriminate against people

    on any grounds. Equality is essential in a world where every nation is heterogeneous and where every

    group can be found in every country around the world. The nations of the world should work together

    in promoting equality and protecting the basic human rights of all their residents.

  • NEWS AND VIEWS

    Fifth Edition of Magazine Launch

    I am extremely honoured to be writing the report for this

    edition of the magazine. The event was a very enlightening one

    and extremely special. This time we had Professor Krishne

    Gowda as our chief guest.

    Professor M. Krishne Gowda is the former Principal of St.

    Philomena’s Autonomous College, Mysore. He is now a fame in

    the new media, being a stand-up comedian. He also has acted

    in a few kannada films. He interacted with all the students

    present. The session gave everyone a lotof knowledge about the

    history of our state, Karnatakaand gave us deeper insight into the generation gap.

    Another Highlight of the event was when, the November edition of the Feathers of Hope

    magazine was launched, followed by the Editors speaking and sharing their experiences.

    Overall, the event was a huge success and it was great attending it!

    Model United Nations Virtual Conference

    Ganga Pramod of grade 11 ISC B took part for Vibrant Model United Nations, a virtual

    conference that took place on 5th and 6th December 2020. She was part of the United Nations

    Children's Fund Committee (UNICEF) which discussed ways to eliminate violence against

    children with special emphasis on international child abduction. She was awarded a High

    Commendation Award along with certificate and cash prize. She said that the conference

    included high quality debate with delegates from all over India - specially delegates from the

    Mumbai, Bangalore and Gurgaon Circuits. It had a well experienced Executive Board who

    made the flow of committee easy, smooth and understandable. The conference commenced

    with Mudit Pathak, a 2021 Padma Sree Award nominee addressing the gathering with his much

    inspirational words.

  • AUTHORS BORN IN INDIA QUIZ

    1. The BagheeraKiplingi is a species of jumping spider that was discovered in Central America. It is named as a tribute to a legendary British poet and novelist born in Bombay. He

    wrote a very famous story which drew inspiration from the present day Pench Tiger Reserve.

    The main character was created based on a true story about a boy raised by the wolves. He won

    the Nobel Prize for Literature in the year 1907. He is also famously known for his poem “If”

    which can be found inscribed at the Wimbledon. Identify this great poet, novelist and journalist.

    2. This Kannada writer was born in Hungenahalli. He became the 4th Kannada writer to be conferred the Jnanpith Award. He was given the title Rajasevasakta by Maharaja of Mysore

    NalvadiKrishnarajaWodeyar. He served in the Mysore Civil Services for 26 years. He wrote over

    123 books in Kannada and 17 books in English. In the year 1983, he won the Jnanapith award

    for his novel ChikaviraRajendra, a story about the last ruler of Kodagu. Identify this asset of

    Karnataka.

    3. This author from India became the first Indian citizen to have won the prestigious Man Booker Prize for her book “The God of Small Things”. She won the Man Booker Prize in the year

    1997, becoming the first Indian resident to achieve this feat. She is a prominent Human Rights

    and Environmental Activist who has been a strong critic of various decisions taken by

    governments all over the world with regard to environment and weapons of Mass Destruction.

    Identify this author and political activist from India.

    4. This Indian author was born in Hadali in present day Pakistan. He was a prominent author, journalist, diplomat, lawyer and politician. He served as an Indian Foreign Services

    officer from 1947 to 1951, when he entered journalism. He chronicled his experiences during the

    partition in his book, “Train to Pakistan”. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, which he

    returned to protest the infiltration of the Golden Temple. Later, in the year 2007 the Government

    of India conferred upon him, the Padma Vibhushan. Identify this great author.

    5. The train 12859/60 connects Mumbai’s ChhatrapatiShivajiMaharaj Terminus and the Howrah Junction in West Bengal. It is named after a certain literary collection, which won the

    author a Nobel Prize. Originally written in Bengali, this literary collection’s name translates to

    “Song Offering” in English. Identify the literary collection and the author.

    6. Born as Dhanpat Rai Srivastava, this great Indian author was a prominent contributor to Hindustani literature. He originally wrote in Urdu but later started writing in Hindustani, a

    language that is a mixture of Urdu and Hindi. He has written many books like “Godan”,

    “Mansarovar”, “Idgah” and “Karambhoomi”. He was given the title “UpanyaasSamrat” for his

    literary works and is considered one of the greatest authors from the subcontinent. Identify the

    author.

    7. This great Sanskrit dramatist famously wrote 3 Sanskrit dramas, the “Abhijnanasakuntalam”, Malavikagnimitram and Vikramorvasiyam. These three dramas are

    based on the lives of characters from Hindu mythology. The first play is based on the story of

    Shakuntala, the second on the story of King Agnimitra and the last drama is based on the celestial

    आज की इस बिलती हुई पररस्थथदत ने या य ों कहें दक असामदयक बिलाव ने क्या हर व्यस्ि क यह स चने पर मजबूर

    नही ों कर दिया है ,दक हम साोंसाररक सुख- सुदवधाओों में इतने ख गए की हमें हमारे आसपास के बिलते हुए वातावरण

    के बारे में स चने का मौका ही नही ों दमला ? बिलते पररवेश ने हमें ये दसखा दिया की आप प्रकृदत के साथ चाहे दजतना

    स्खलवाड़ कर ल ,वह अपना बिला ले ही लेती है | कहते हैं न.....”प्रकृदत सववशस्िमान है” , दजतनी आप इसकी िेखभाल

    करें गे व भी आपकी उतनी ही रक्षा करेगी, भरपूर सुख िेगी | हम मनुष्य अपनी िररयादिली दिखाते हुए चोंि किम त

    उठाते हैं ,पर दिर वही ढाक के तीन पात | कुछ दिन ों की िेखािेखी और क दशश ,और दिर वही पुराने ढरे पर चल

    मीठे ब ल भरे, हवा में शुद्धता के साथ साथ नमी भी थी, पेड़ पौध ों में दिर एक

    बार जान सी आ गयी |

    और ऐसा नही ों था की दसिव वातावरण में ही बिलाव था ,मनुष्य की स च में

    भी बड़ा बिलाव आया, कम साधन ों में दकस तरह दजया जाये , जरूरत ों क

    कैसे सीदमत दकया जाये ,कैसे चीज ों में प्राथदमकता िी जाये ,ये सब स च ने

    भी प्रभादवत दकया |पढ़ने -दलखने का ढोंग बिला, तकनीकीजरूरत ों के द्वारा

    बिलती हुई पररस्थथदत क सोंभाला गया | एक दृढ़ स च ने जन्म दलया है दक

    क ई भी जरूरत इतनी सशि नही ों ह सकती, दजतना की हम मनुष्य उसे बना न लें | मनुष्य हर पररस्थथदत में जी सकता

    है ,हर पररस्थथदत का सामना सिलता पूववक कर सकता है | उसके सामने कैसी भी दवकट और दवषम पररस्थथदतयाों आयें,

    वह हर मुस्िल का सामना कर सकता है |

    मानव का आचरण उसके दवचार ों का, उसकी मानदसकता का आईना है। मनुष्य का आचरण जाोंच कर ही ल ग उसके

    प्रदत अपनी राय कायम करते हैं। दकसी मनुष्य क अच्छा या बुरा सादबत

    करने वाला उसका व्यवहार ही है। दकनु्त प्रश्न ये उठता है दक इस आचरण

    का आधार कहाों है? िरअसल यह आधार उसके बालपन में ही दनदहत

    है। पररवार, माता- दपता का आचरण, उनकी सीख और साथ ही यह

    िादयत्व आ बैठता है उस समाज के कों ध ों पर भी जहाों वह रहता है।

    अपने चार ों ओर जब हम िेखते हैं त पाते हैं, झठू, बेईमानी, ध खा, दहोंसा,

    और ऐसा ही बहुत कुछ। क्या ये सब हमें स चने क मजबूर नही ों करता

    दक इन घृदणत कायों में दलप्त प्रादणय ों की मानदसकता क्या है? दकन

    कारण ों से वह भटक गए, वे सही- गलत, उदचत- अनुदचत की सीमा रेखा

    लाोंघ कर समाज क कलुदषत करने पर उतारू हैं? कही ों ऐसा त नही ों दक

    शायि उनकी दशक्षा में ही कमी रह गई। महात्मा बुद्ध, महावीर, रामायण,

    गीता और गाोंधी उन तक पहुोंच ही नही ों पाए। नैदतक मूल् ों की सीख से

    परे, वे स्वाथव से अदभभूत ह समस्त मानवीयता क कलोंदकत दकए जा रहे

    हैं।

    ऐसे में एक दवद्याथी और िेश के दजमे्मिार नागररक ह ने के नाते हमे अपने िादयत्व का आभास ह ना आवश्यक है। आइए

    दमलकर जहाों तक सोंभव ह , मानवता व सिाचार का पाठ पढ़ें और पढ़ाएों , उदचत आचरण का महत्व समझें, नव समाज

    दिसमस ईसाई समुिाय का सबसे बड़ा त्य हार है । यह त्य हार

    हर वषव 25 दिसोंबर के दिन मनाया जाता है । यह वही दिन था जब

    लगभग 2000 वषव पहले ईसा मसीह नामक एक महान सोंत का

    जन्म हुआ था । उन्हें ईसाई धमव का जन्मिाता माना जाता है ।

    उन्ह ोंने मानव समुिाय क पे्रम और भाईचारे का सोंिेश दिया था ।

    दिसमस का पवव पूरी िुदनया में मनाया जाता है । दवश्व के दजन

    िेश ों में ईसाई धमावनुयायी रहते हैं, वे इस त्य हार क बहुत उत्साह

    से मनाते हैं । वे इस दिन चचव में जाते हैं और दवशेष प्राथवना करते

    हैं । वे अपने प्यारे यीशु क याि करते हैं दजन्हें दकसी समय सूली

    पर लटका दिया गया था । पर यीशु दिर से जी उठे थे । यह

    सचमुच एक बड़ा चमत्कार था ।

    इस चमत्कार के पीछे जन-कल्ाण की भावना थी । यह भावना

    थी दक िुुःखी मानव क शाोंदत और सुख पहुाँचाया जाय । दजन ल ग ों ने उन्हें सूली पर चढ़ाया था, उनके दलए उन्ह ोंने प्रभु से

    प्राथवना की थी दक हे भगवान! इन्हें क्षमा कर िेना ये नही ों जानते दक ये क्या कर रहे हैं ।

    ईसा मसीह क यीशु, जीसस िाइस्ट आदि नाम से भी जाना जाता है । इनके चमत्कार एवों उपिेश ों की कथाएाँ बाइदबल

    में वदणवत हैं । इन्ह ोंने ल ग ों क आपस में पे्रम सदहत, दमल-जुलकर रहने की दशक्षा िी । इन्ह ोंने कहा था दक सभी मनुष्य

    एक ही ईश्वर की सोंतान हैं, अतुः दकसी क पीड़ा न ि । इन्ह ोंने अोंध ों क आोंखें िी ों, बहर ों क कान दिए, लोंगड़ ों क भला-

    चोंगा कर दिया । सोंसार के सभी पाप अपने ऊपर ले दलए और उनकेपुण्य बााँट दिए । दजन ल ग ों क इनकी बातें पसोंि

    आई वे उनके दशष्य बन गए । कुछ ल ग ज अहोंकारी और अज्ञानी थे, वे उनसे दचढ़ गए और उन्हें िााँसी पर लटका दिया

    । आज सारा सोंसार उन्हें आिर की दृदि से िेखता है ।

    दिसमस का त्य हार खुदशयााँ मनाने का त्य हार है । ईसाई कई दिन से इसकी तैयारी करते हैं । घर की साि-सिाई ह ती

    है तथा घर सुसस्ित दकए जाते हैं । घर में नए िनीचर खरीिे जाते हैं । दिसमस के दिन पहनने के दलए नए वस्त्र तैयार

    दकए जाते हैं । िुकान ों में केक और दमठाइय ों के ऑडवर दिए जाते हैं । घर में अदतदथय ों के आवागमन का दसलदसला आरोंभ

    ह जाता है । बाजार सज जाते हैं । दिसोंबर में कड़ाके की ठों ड पड़ती है परों तु ल ग ों का उत्साह िेखते ही बनता है ।

    आस्खर दिसमस का पावन दिन आ ही गया । घर में सुबह से ही चहल-पहल शुरू ह गई । नहा- ध कर चचव जाने की

    तैयारी ह ने लगी । चचव भी सजा हुआ था । वहााँ म मबदियााँ जल रही थी ों; ल ग यीशु के सामने प्राथवना कर रहे थे । पािरी

    दवदधवत् पूजा-अनुष्ठान कर रहे थे । कही ों धादमवक प्रवचन ह रहा था त कही ों सामूदहक प्राथवना ह रही थी ।

    वेदटकन के प प जनसमूह क धमव और आथथा की बातें बता रहे थे । चचव की घोंदटयााँ आज अदधक कणवदप्रय लग रही थी ों ।

    घर में केक और पकवान बने । एक से बढ् कर एक स्वादिि केक । दकसी में गुलाब की खुशबू थी त दकसी में िल ों की

    सुगोंध । सब मजे लेकर खा रहे थे और दमत् ों क स्खला रहे थे । पड़ सी चाहे दकसी भी धमव क माने, उनकी खुशी में शरीक

    हुए दबना न रह सके । सभी

  • दिसमस टर ी के चार ों ओर जमा हुआ । सजा हुआ दिसमस टर ी आकषवक लग रहा

    था । यहााँ दबजली के झालर लटके थे और म मबदतयााँ जल रही थी ों । बचे्च उत्साह

    से नाच-गा रहे थे । ल ग एक-िूसरे क दिसमस की शुभकामनाएों िे रहे थे ।

    बचे्च दिसमस पर अपने प्यारे साोंताक्ााँज क बहुत याि करते हैं । लोंबे बाल,

    सिेि िाढ़ी और रोंगदबरों गे वस्त्र पहने साोंताक्ॉज दिसमस पर जरूर आता है

    और बच्च ों क टॉदियाों, गुब्बारे, दमठाइयााँ, कपडे़, जूते आदि भााँदत-भााँदत के पिाथव

    िेता है । कई ल ग इस दिन साोंताक्ॉज बन जाते हैं और बच्च ों में कुछ-न-कुछ

    बााँटते हैं । बचे्च खुश ह कर इनका पीछा करते हैं । बहुत ही मन रोंजक दृश्य

    उपस्थथत ह जाता है ।

    इस तरह दिसमस का त्य हार ल ग ों क सबके साथ दमल-जुलकर रहने का सोंिेश िेता है । ईसा मसीह कहते थे-िीन-

    िुस्खय ों की सेवा सोंसार का सबसे बड़ा धमव है । इसदलए दजतना ह सके, िूसर ों की मिि कर ।

    िेखा जाए त यही सोंसार के अन्य सभी धमों का सार है । दिसमस के अवसर पर ल ग ों क ईसा मसीह के उपिेश ों पर

    चलने का सोंकल्प लेना चादहए ।

    Division of future India

    After extensive pondering and contemplation since the year 2014, the union cabinet has finally

    approved and passed a revolutionary policy in the name of “National Education Policy 2020”. NEP

    2020 aims to bring about far-reaching and insurgent goals into the picture. This caused many raised

    eyebrows but also clearly indicated the degree of blind eye we have towards a subject as important

    as education. It is safe to say that education plays one of the most crucial roles in shaping an

    individual. According to a survey, only 34 million people out of the 1,381.59 million make up India's

    organized sector. This is a clear indication of India's literacy rate and goes to say a lot about how the

    system is functioning as a whole. National Education Policy 2020 is the first holistic reform since

    the independence era that aims to completely change education across all levels of India.

    The fundamental reconstruction of the system begins from the pedagogical and curricular structure

    of the current system. This is performed to meet the development needs and interests of the 21st-

    century students. For this to successfully take place, children from all over India, regardless of their

    financial, caste and gender differences will undergo a 3-month long orientation. This helps to

    provide a direct path in which they will have basic literacy as their peers. Here the spotlight is thrown

    to help those in disadvantaged backgrounds to get a fair start at their education journey. In addition

    to all this, there will also be a lot more focus on the teaching faculty while also placing community

    volunteers who will eventually mentor and be figurative role models that these students can relate

    and learn from.

    One of the many reforms brought into viewpoint by the National Education Policy 2020 is a push on

    early childhood education and care. This refers to the breakdown of the existing 10+2 system and

    introduction of the 5+3+3+4 structure. The entire amount of schooling years will continue to remain

    12 years while three of these years will be dedicated to the Anganwadi or pre-school. It will replace

    the 10+2 structure of school curricula by a 5+3+3+4 structure will include a foundational stage from

    3 to 8, three years of pre-primary education from 8 to 11, a preparatory stage from 11 to 14, while the

    secondary stage would comprise of 14 to 18 years.

    As claimed by NEP 2020, instead of exams being held every year, school students will sit only to take

    exams for classes 3, 5, and 8. Assessment in other years will shift to a "regular and formative" style

    that will be more "competency-based". Board exams will continue to take place for classes 10 and 12

    but will be substantially reformed and re-designed with "holistic development” as the aim. These

    standards will be established by a new national assessment centre known as PARAKH (Performance

    Assessment, Review, and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development). For this, the NCERT will

    be the central body to shape a National Curricular and Pedagogical Framework for Early Childhood

    Care and Education NCPFECCE). NEP 2020 emphasizes universal access to schools for all children

    in the next decade. It stresses on increasing the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) and putting a stop to

    the spiralling drop-out rate in India.

    Great focus has been laid on equipping the child with “21st-century skills”. The student will now have

    greater flexibility in choosing her subjects as a rigid demarcation between Arts and Sciences,

    curricular and extracurricular subjects, or vocational and academic streams will cease to exist. It

    envisages a new curricular and pedagogical structure for school education. It aims to transform the

    curriculum & pedagogy by 2022 to encourage holistic development with minimal rote learning.

  • It aims to shape an education system that benefits all of India’s children. It emphasizes the criticality

    of early childhood education and the persistence of its advantages throughout an individual’s life.

    As always, some certain disadvantages and drawbacks come along with every revolutionary change.

    One of the main cons of this policy is the lack of clarity regarding the curricular and teaching faculty

    related issues. Here, the policy advises that mostly oral and reading activities are conducted for the

    pre-primary grades that are from grades 1-3. From grade 4 and the extra hour of writing will be

    introduced. This immensely contradicts research conducted for decades stating that children must

    be taught writing, reading, listening and speaking skills simultaneously and from a very young age.

    Another major disadvantage is in relation to finance and expenditure of free and compulsory

    education. During the 1993 Unnikrishnan case, the supreme court stated that every child below the

    age of 14 had complete right to free education. On the contrary, the RTE act states that only children

    from the ages 6-14 can avail this privilege as the country couldn't afford the cost of preschool. When

    taken into account compulsory education for both preschool and secondary the government will

    have to pay attention to the humongous financial funding required for this to take place.

    Nevertheless, the emphasis placed on preschool education and foundational learning is key and

    timely especially when we look at the alarming rates of literacy provided by the government own

    National Achievement Surveys (NAS) and Pratham’s yearly Annual Status of Education Reports

    (ASER). With regard to numerous research, it is overall proved that basic writing, reading and

    numerical skills need to be built before class 2. This then helps the child keep up with the increasing

    complexity of subjects with ease. One of the most crucial parts of the NEP is its aim to level the

    the development of mental faculties, under school curriculum". Therefore, the suggestion to

    to be implemented successfully, short training programmes are required to be conducted for

    Anganwadi workers and volunteers. This is to ensure that the foundational learning happens

    effortlessly and proactively.

  • Why semiconductor chips matter: A primer Part 2

    In my previous article, I have laid out why the semiconductor industry in this century is like the oil industry in the 20th. So, where does India fit into this whole story? Where do we go from here? Unfortunately for India, the industry is settled with significant players having cemented their dominance across quite a few countries – U.S.A, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, etc. In this article, I'll talk about a few things: The main obstacles to growing the industry in India, what we can do and what we are currently doing. WHAT ARE THE MAIN OBSTACLES? Firstly, several structural bottlenecks in India - India's infrastructure and public works are not at par with other developing countries like Vietnam or Brazil to pursue future initiatives in semiconductor chip manufacturing. Running a chip fabrication plant requires an uninterrupted power supply and litres of pure water – something that our state cannot guarantee to its citizens, let alone industries. Other bottlenecks include our labour laws, lack of access to capital, procedural and bureaucratic delays, unfavourable business environment – to name a few. Secondly, India is quite late to the game. Overall, the industry has settled among a few countries - Taiwan, U.S.A., China, South Korea, and Japan. Many players have cemented their standing in the industry – TSMC, SMIC, Apple, Qualcomm, ARM, AMD, Intel, SK Hynix, Texas Instruments. This is a problem for many reasons. Chipmakers and programmers are used to this specific set of products that it would take a long time for Indian makers to integrate themselves in this ecosystem – considering that Indian chips are not up to global standards. Thirdly, Processor making is a costly procedure in terms of money, time and skills. Even a simple processor would require a team of around 100 people with different skill sets such as VLSI, Compilers, Operating Systems, Fabrication Specialists over 4-5 years to make a processor. Intel's each processor Projects cost more than 100M$ each to give you an idea of the money involved. It takes years for a company to achieve a break-even point. Finally, you require a fabrication Plant where the chips are manufactured. India does have the scientific capabilities to manufacture chips. At one point, the Government considered a 2,500 crore outlay on a study based on the Gallium Nitride semiconductor fabrication unit at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). Gallium Nitride based chips skip the matured silicon-based technology. Defence companies such as BHEL which, along with Wipro, designed and developed indigenous chips had to rely on having the fabrication done abroad and not in India—as India does not have the required facilities. Chinese and Taiwanese companies receive extensive government support to create a large ecosystem for manufacturing chips on a large scale. This kind of ecosystem does not exist in India. A few years ago, the Government of India tried one initiative called the HSMC – Hindustan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, similar to TSMC(Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company). It failed to take off. WHAT MUST BE DONE? India has two fabrication units — SITAR, a unit of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in Bengaluru and a semiconductor laboratory in Chandigarh, which build silicon chips for strategic purposes like defence. (not for commercial purposes) Fabrication facilities cost around $8 billion, and the number slowly start to climb afterwards. There are heavy operational costs involved, and the technology keeps changing every 4-5 years. The uncertainty and the scale involved means that for the semiconductor industry to take off in India, the Government needs to provide extensive and consistent monetary support to nurture and develop the industry.

  • In the short term, India can set up speciality fabs like Gallium Nitride and Silicon Carbide, which may have enough demand locally and cost much less to set up. We can also focus on developing a fabless semiconductor ecosystem in India. A fabless company designs and sells the hardware and semiconductor chips but does not manufacture the silicon wafers, or chips, used in its products. Instead, it outsources the fabrication to a manufacturing plant or foundry. This would be an excellent first step to creating an ecosystem of suppliers that can unleash potential India has. Another thing we need to do is to invest in Rare – Earth metals. Currently, most of the rare-earth metals are exclusively produced in China and Australia, where the former is the most significant producer in the world, accounting for 85% of total worldwide production. Some of these materials include Cerium, Neodymium, Dysprosium, Terbium and countless others that used for manufacturing critical components that go into almost everything we use today. Finally, we must remember: all policy is intersectional. We can throw all the money we have on the chip-making. Still, it isn't enough unless we solve the structural issues in our country – the byzantine bureaucracy, procedural delays, poor law and order – the broken law enforcement and judiciary, flawed education system, obsolete labour and land laws, all of which combine to form an unfavourable environment for businesses. WHAT ARE WE CURRENTLY DOING? The Government recently announced three schemes which are aimed at expanding the growing industrial electronics manufacturing sector rapidly by 2025 and create additional 1.5-2 million new jobs in the short term. They are:

    1. Production – Linked Incentive This scheme aims to remove the constraint of large capital investments in India. The incentive will be 4-6 per cent of the incremental sales in 2019-20 (base year) for certain goods manufactured in India. The minimum investment a company needs to make to be eligible for the scheme is Rs 1,000 crore in four years (until 2024-25) for foreign mobile phone manufacturers, Rs 200 crore for domestic mobile phone companies and Rs 100 crore for components manufacturers (foreign or domestic)

    2. Scheme for promotion of manufacturing of electronic components and Semiconductors or SPECS (total value: Rs 3,285 crore) To alleviate the issue of high capital cost of capital, the Government has launched this scheme under which it will provide a financial incentive of 25 per cent of capital expenditure that companies spend on setting up a manufacturing base in India for specific electronic components.

    3. Modified Electronics Manufacturing Clusters or EMC 2.0 It will provide a financial incentive to companies for setting up electronics manufacturing clusters where infrastructure is built so that production can be done locally and at scale, thereby helping supply chains. Companies will need to put an investment of at least Rs 300 crore in an EM cluster. One or more companies can decide to take the cluster together and develop common facility centres in existing clusters or industrial parks as well. The Government will finance half of the cost of the project.
