UNDERSTANDING THE SPORTHOW IT ALL BEGANVolleyball was created in 1895, in the American state of Massachusetts, as an alternative to the intense physical contact of basketball – a sport invented in the same state a few years before. It made its debut in the Olympic programme at Tokyo 1964, and its name derives from the movement “to volley”.
ABOUT THE COMPETITIONEach player is responsible for attacking or defending, according to their position on court. The exception is the libero, who, wearing a different uniform, can replace any player at any time, but cannot attack. Matches are decided in best of five sets. In order to win a set, the team need to reach 25 points, with an advantage of at least 2 – or any score above 25, as soon as the 2-point advantage is reached. The exception is the fifth set, also known as tie-break, that goes up to 15 points or any score above as soon as the 2-point advantage is reached. The team can touch the ball up to three times in a row before playing it to the other side. Every time the team scores after receiving the opponent’s service, the players change position on court, moving clockwise.
DID YOU KNOW?• In the 1980s, Brazil revolutionised the
sport with two new types of service. Attacker Bernard Rajzman, silver medal at Los Angeles 1984, created the “Star Trek” service, in which the ball almost reaches the gymnasium’s ceiling before starting to descend over the opponent’s court. His teammates, William da Silva, Renan Dal Zotto and José Montanaro Jr, developed the technique of jumping when serving, known as jump serve and used to this day
• In Rio 2016, the Brazilian women’s team can equal Cuba’s if they win the Olympic gold for the third time in a row
