VOLKSWAGEN
Many garages are experiencing more and more issues with the premature failure of auxiliary drive belts. In this bulletin, we are focusing on the VW 1.9 Tdi engine and SKF will show the ease of replacing all of the components in the system. This also includes the alternator pulley (FAP), which has been shown to be one of the major causes of auxiliary belt tensioner failure. In order to reduce the danger of premature breakdowns, SKF recommends replacing all of the auxiliary components at the same time eliminating any future warranty issues.

2. Carefully slacken the tension on the tensioner and the belt using a 19 mm spanner. If carrying out a FAP replacement on a workbench, then remove the engine cover.
3. Remove the belt and the old tensioner.
4. Replace the auxiliary tensioner (VKM 31013), ensuring that all torque specifications, as set out in the vehicle manufacturers instructions, are followed.
5. Replace the AC tensioner (VKM 31059), following all torque specifications as set out in the vehicle manufacturers’ instructions.
1. Disconnect the battery and remove the fan from the viscous coupling. Slacken the AC tensioner, then remove the multi-V belt and the AC tensioner.
Refer to SKF Pole Position Bulletin #6 (VKMA 31020) for more detailed hints and tips!
At this stage the technician can either remove the alternator and replace the FAP pulley on a workbench, or depending on clearance, remove and refit the pulley on the vehicle.
Replacement on the vehicle
Using SKF tool VKN 350:
Remove the old pulley:
Replace with VKM 03107 and torque to 80 Nm. Replace the cap and fit a new VKMV 5PK1432 multi-V belt.
Rotate the auxiliary system twice, whilst checking for belt alignment. Refit the crankshaft cap and the VKMV 4PK855 AC belt, and adjust to the manufacturers’ instructions.
Replacement on a workbench
• Remove the alternator following vehicle manufacturers’ instructions and secure in a ‘soft jawed’/aluminium vice.
• Care should be taken when securing, to prevent damaging the alternator casing!
Using SKF tool VKN 350.
Remove the old pulley and replace with VKM 03107. Torque to 80 Nm.
Fit the new cap, refit the alternator to the engine, in the reverse order to its removal. Then fit a new VKMV 5PK1432 multi-V belt.
Rotate the auxiliary system twice, whilst checking for belt alignment. Refit the crankshaft cap and the VKMV 4PK855 AC belt, and adjust to the manufacturers’ instructions.
