2 | The New Beetle – Philosophy

The Volkswagen Philosophy.Innovation. Responsibility. Value. At Volkswagen we pride

ourselves on this set of beliefs. So when you make the

Volkswagen choice you can be assured that you have chosen

a car with this creed at the very core of its inception, its

development, and its realisation.

At Volkswagen we have combined the power of innovation

with exceptional design to deliver a superior driving

experience. Superb technologies such as our low emission

petrol and TDI diesel engines not only offer an enhanced

driving experience, but signifi cantly reduce both carbon

emissions and fuel consumption.

Responsible, effi cient environmental considerations such

as this not only save you money, but ultimately the planet’s

precious resources, and is just one example of the many

commitments that Volkswagen has made to reduce its

carbon footprint.

We are proud of the reputation we have earned for value.

A Volkswagen vehicle offers safety, reliability and comfort,

making it outstanding value for money. With trusted and

timeless German engineering our models are the perfect

vehicles for you and your family.

New Beetle. From its cheeky good looks to its feature-fi lled interior,

the New Beetle has been designed with one thing in mind:

fun! And if just looking at it puts a smile on your face,

imagine what a drive can do. The New Beetle is a refreshing

change – a unique design that can only be described

as a modern classic.

Design. The New Beetle is a vehicle with character and extraordinary

styling. Its harmonious curves make the car unique

– from the arched roof and the windscreen drawn forward

over the bonnet, to the sculptural rear sitting down low

to the road. Its silhouette is instantly recognisable – a

harmonious convergence of smooth lines and pleasing

geometric arches. The result is an unconventional visual

statement of optimism, fun and individuality.

The New Beetle’s charm begins with its eye-catching but

brilliantly simple styling. Intelligent functionality and

exciting looks complement each other – right down to

the smallest detail. Every piece is rounded, every surface,

smooth. The oval shapes of the headlights and tail lights are

perfectly integrated into the New Beetle’s fl uid contours,

and they sit fl ush with the body. Nothing breaks the

sculptured fl ow.

8 | The New Beetle – Safety

Safety.Safety is of the highest priority to Volkswagen and is therefore an overriding

theme in the design and engineering of the New Beetle. With a full suite of

active and passive safety systems, you can rest assured that your safety has been

thoroughly considered.

The New Beetle’s safety credentials include its rigid body structure which creates

a solid passenger cell. Its body panels are designed to crumple in the event of

an accident, absorbing the energy of the impact. The New Beetle’s lightweight

construction is reinforced with hardened, high strength steel to give occupants

maximum protection in an accident.

In an accident, depending on the severity of the impact, the New Beetle’s safety

features work together to protect occupants by deploying the belt tensioners

and airbags. The system also activates the hazard warning lights, the doors

are unlocked, interior lights are switched on and the fuel pump is deactivated.

Active Safety – Everything designed to help prevent accidents from happening.Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP)ESP helps ensure that the vehicle goes where you steer it, even in extreme driving

conditions. The ESP system constantly compares the actual movement of the

vehicle with carefully pre-determined values. Should a situation arise in which

the vehicle starts to skid, ESP will apply the brakes to individual wheels and

automatically adjust the engine’s power output to help correct the problem.

It also minimises the likelihood of spinning off on a curve due to understeering

or oversteering.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)When braking, wheel speed sensors measure the road wheel speed and should one

or more wheels start to lock the ABS system reduces brake pressure to that wheel.

This prevents the wheels from locking during heavy or emergency braking, helping

enable the vehicle to remain steerable.

Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution (EBD)Every vehicle’s centre of gravity shifts forwards when the brakes are applied.

This presents a risk of the rear wheels tending to lock up due to the reduction

in traction. Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution uses the solenoid valves in

the ABS unit to regulate the braking power at the rear wheels, thereby ensuring

maximum braking performance at both the front and rear wheels and preventing

the rear end from swerving out due to over-braking in the rear wheels.

Safety – The New Beetle | 9

Passive Safety – Design measures taken to protect the occupants of vehicles from injury, or to reduce the risk of injury.Crumple ZonesFront and rear crumple zones absorb the energy of an impact and divert

the resulting forces away from the secure passenger safety cell.

AirbagsAll New Beetle models feature standard driver and passenger front and front side/

head airbags. Airbags combine with the seat belts to help reduce the risk of severe

head and chest injuries in collisions. When infl ated, airbags cushion the head and

upper body and distribute the resulting loads over as large an area as possible.

Safety Optimised Head RestraintsSafety Optimised Head Restraints on the front seats are optimally positioned and

specially contoured to help reduce whiplash injuries. In the event of an accident,

excellent protection is achieved via the seatback controlling upper body movements,

and this is balanced with head movements being controlled via the head restraints.

SeatbeltsFront seat passenger seatbelts are equipped with belt pre-tensioners and belt force

limiters. Belt tensioners tighten the seatbelt on impact, pulling it closer to the

occupant’s body, ideally positioning them for airbag infl ation. Belt force limiters

reduce seat belt forces on front seat occupants and, in conjunction with belt

tensioners and airbags, lessen the risk of upper body injuries. Three-point seatbelts

are fi tted to all seats, and child seat anchor points are fi tted in the rear.

Active Roll Over Protection System (New Beetle Cabriolet)Sensors recognise a roll-over situation and activate the advanced roll over

protection system in just 0.25 seconds. When activated, the rear head restraints

pop up in a fraction of a second and when combined with the heavily strengthened

windscreen frame, provide a sophisticated safety package.

Leather appointed seating shown is an optional extra.

10 | The New Beetle – Interior

Interior. The New Beetle’s refreshing design and sense of style

fl ows through to its ergonomic interior. Quality materials

and fi nishes defi ne the interior space. The driver’s view

is focused on a single, circular instrument cluster which

utilises distinctive blue illumination. The high quality

controls are clearly labelled and placed in the most logical

positions, for easy and intuitive access.

Getting comfortable is easy with the height adjustable

driver’s seat and a height and reach adjustable steering

wheel. The standard air conditioning incorporates a

dust and pollen fi lter to trap airborne particles so they

don’t enter the cabin. In-car entertainment is delivered

by a premium six speaker CD sound system with

MP3 compatibility. The small vase in the dash complete

with a fl ower defi nes the spirit of the New Beetle.

Glossary.Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)When braking, wheel speed sensors measure the road wheel

speed and should one or more wheels start to lock the ABS

system reduces brake pressure to that wheel. This prevents

the wheels from locking during heavy or emergency braking,

enabling the vehicle to remain steerable.

Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR)ASR is a switchable traction control system that prevents the

driven wheels from spinning under acceleration by reducing

engine torque. It is active at speeds above 40km/h.

Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution (EBD)Electronic, more sophisticated means of regulating the ratio

of front/rear brake pressure. Settings are varied according to

driving and load conditions to ensure each wheel is braked to

the optimum extent.

Electronic Diff erential Lock (EDL)EDL improves driving and steering characteristics when

accelerating on road surfaces where each wheel has a different

degree of traction. The system operates automatically and

is combined with the ABS system. Using the ABS wheel

sensors, EDL monitors the speed of the individual driving

wheels. When a difference in driving wheel speed is detected

(i.e. when one wheel starts to spin due to differences in road

surfaces, e.g. due to water or dirt) the system brakes the

spinning wheel, transferring engine power to the wheel with

the best traction. EDL is active in forward and reverse and

operates up to 40km/h.

Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP)ABS, EDL and ASR traction control systems are integrated into

the Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP). In short, ESP helps

ensure that the vehicle goes where you steer it even in extreme

driving conditions. The ESP system constantly compares

the actual movement of the vehicle with pre-determined

values and should a situation arise where the vehicle starts

to skid, ESP will apply the brakes to individual wheels and

automatically adjust the engine’s power output to correct the

problem. ESP prevents the vehicle from losing control when

trying to avoid an accident, for example. It also prevents

spinning off on a curve due to either understeer or oversteer.

Australian Environmental Strategy.

Steps Towards SustainabilityTo Volkswagen Group Australia, sustainability means

taking responsibility for the environment, as well as actively

participating in the development of society. We believe

sustainability offers opportunities for long-term innovations,

new approaches, effi cient technologies and ground-breaking

products. Our organisation has established an Environment

Committee to manage our business activities and reduce our

environmental impact.

Carbon Management StrategyWe have developed a Carbon Management Strategy to

identify and manage carbon emissions from our business

activities. Our fuel usage from company cars and energy

usage were calculated to measure our Carbon Footprint,

and comprehensive carbon reduction targets have been

set. Volkswagen Group Australia aims to downsize its

environmental footprint in the future.

Carbon Management ProgramOur range of vehicles has earned a reputation for fuel

effi ciency. We’re working to extend that effi ciency throughout

our entire operational structure. We’ve initiated a Carbon

Management Program, to recommend changes to achieve

emissions reductions. We’re making real changes in reducing

our carbon footprint.

Environmentally Friendly EnginesOur TSI twin or single-charged petrol engines achieve

impressive fuel effi ciency with reduced CO2 emissions.

Our TDI diesel engines use less fuel and have lower emissions,

with the benefi ts of high torque and performance. Our diesel

particulate fi lter extracts soot from vehicle exhaust emissions.

Numerous engines already fulfi ll the stringent forthcoming

Euro 5 emissions standard.
