Volar plate injury Information for patients This leaflet explains more about volar plate injury and how to prevent over stretching your joint. If you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to ask your therapist. Wearing your splint You have injured a ligament called the volar plate. This takes 4 - 6 weeks to heal, during this time you must wear a splint which allows the injured finger/s to bend but prevents full straightening of the injured joint. Volar plate injury

Information for patients

This leaflet explains more about volar plate injury and how to prevent over stretching your joint. If you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to ask your therapist.

Wearing your splint You have injured a ligament called the volar plate. This takes 4 - 6 weeks to heal, during this time you must wear a splint which allows the injured finger/s to bend but prevents full straightening of the injured joint. The splint must be worn continuously for 4 - 6 weeks, depending on the severity of the injury.

Exercises All exercises to be done _____ reps, every _____ hour/s.

1. Ensure full movement of unaffected fingers, thumb and wrist. 2. Undo the Velcro strap at the end of the splint (as instructed by your therapist) 3. Once all the exercises are done, replace the Velcro strap around the end of

the finger.

Using your unaffected hand, bend your finger into a hook position. Then actively straighten your finger back to your splint.

Actively bend the middle joint of the finger. Hold for 10 seconds. Then actively straighten your finger back to your splint.

Actively bend the top joint of the finger. Hold for 10 seconds. Then actively straighten your finger back to your splint.

Actively bend finger to bring tip towards palm. Hold for 10 seconds (Your therapist may ask you to assist by using your other hand). Then actively straighten your finger back to your splint.
