Past Keeping Scoreby Toni Babcock

None of us like to feel like we have dropped the ball.

At home, at school, or on the job, if you’re like me

you want to live up to other people’s expectations.

But nobody is perfect and sometimes we fail to live

up to what people expect, or even up to our own ex-

pectations. We don’t always keep the ball sometimes

we drop it.

Christians are painfully aware when they drop the

ball. In spite of our best intentions, we recognize our

old nature can still trip us up. When we feel judged

because of this, we oft en get involved in a misera-

ble game that protects us from the shame we feel for

ever having dropped the ball. I call it “Folly Ball”.

Most everyone can relate to it. It goes like this:

Someone points out an area in your life where you

have dropped the ball. You feel targeted. You feel

like this person has become your opponent, your

self-righteous critic because in your mind they ap-

pear to take satisfaction in pointing out your faults.

“How hypocritical of them” you immediately protest

to yourself. So you pick up the ball (I call it the shame/

blame ball) and spike it back at your opponent. Now

you are the critic, and the game is on.

As the critic, you proceed to point out where your

opponent has dropped the ball.

Let them feel what it is like to be judged, you say to

yourself. Let them feel shame for having dropped the

ball. Th ey have no right to criticize. You then proceed

to spike the ball back into their court. Notice how Je-

sus is obscured in the game of Folly Ball.

Th e truth is, we can’t win and infl uence people for

any good by tossing the shame/blame ball back and

forth. Nobody wins at this game. Not us, not our op-

ponents, not God. When we play Folly Ball, we have

forgotten who took the ball in our place and com-

manded us to love one another.

Jesus is the one who is actually holding the ball. He

took our shame and our blame upon himself when

He died for our sins, so we wouldn’t have to play

this destructive game anymore. He proved through

his death and resurrection that it is time to get past

keeping score. He wants us to believe for all time He

won the game, and live accordingly.

WinnerOh! How God loved you and me. Thank you, Father. Through Jesus Christ, God redeemed man. Now authority has been restored to us through Jesus and when we ask God, he can and will move. Satan just knew he had won when Jesus was crucifi ed on the cross but he was never so clever as God. He didn’t know that by having Jesus die on the cross, he was going right along with God’s plan. No, he didn’t know that Jesus would rise again and live in us. He didn’t know that we, the branches of Jesus, the vine would bear much fruit for the kingdom. Now all he can do is try and deceive as many people as he can to follow him. He deceived one-third of the angels making them believe he was greater than God. Is he deceiving you? Don’t be fooled any longer by his wicked devices. His way leads to despair and destruction-no peace, no joy, and no happiness. Let God take control of your life and let his peace fl ow like a river carrying away all the poison of painful memories and bring to you a fresh clear stream of pure life and restoring thoughts. You may have tried everything else and it doesn’t work and never will. Now, try God. If you want to know for sure who wins, read the end of the book. We win and when you dedicate your life to him, you win too.

A Note From the EditorMy daughter-in-law (of 90 days) sent a Facebook message this past week asking for my secret to the best sweet tea. Before I could reply it dawned on me that I was fi nally in the position my mother has been in for almost twenty years - the lady with the closely guarded family recipes. Over the years I have looked to my own mother and moth-er-in-law for family favorites like chili, mustard potato salad, hot dog topping, corn casserole, squash dressing and chicken pot pie. Now, it was my turn to give Katie the secret to making perfectly balanced southern sweet tea.

The secret to the recipe is fairly simple. I’m no chemistry expert but the water to tea to sugar ratio is the deciding factor in a great gallon of sweet tea. In 1997 this family recipe was passed along to me by my husband’s aunt and I’ve never strayed from her measurements. A good tea bag is also of great importance and there’s no tea better than Red Diamond, produced right here in our neck of the woods. The tea container defi nitely plays a factor, as well, so I suggest investing in a gallon-sized glass jar or pitcher, however if your kids serve themselves plastic pitchers are in order with an occasional bleach water rinse.

Without giving away the farm, I’ve outlined the most important com-ponents in preparing the fi nest sweet tea. There are plenty of recipes and formulas out there to suit individual taste but I pride myself in preparing a documented family favorite on a daily basis. Besides, one husband, one mother-in-law, two sons and countless nieces, nephews and friends can’t be wrong, right?

Be blessed,Audrey Chambers

Annual Report by Ralph Veller, Chairman of the BoardDonor & Volunteer Recognition by June Taylor, Vice ChairElection of Board of Directors and any other business that may be proper and necessary

A new Board of Directors Meeting shall follow the Membership Meeting in order to elect officers, committeesand attend to any other appropriate business.

This Annual Membership Meeting is especially important to the operation of the museum. All members are asked to sup-port the museum’s Board of Directors, our volunteers and do-nors by attending.

BCHM is a non-profit organization requiring the same business expertise and experiences required by any for-profit estab-

lishment. The museum is operated and guided by a working board, with unfilled positions currently available to those who believe in our mission, which is to preserve the early family and farming culture of Baldwin County. A “Working Board” does not mean limitless personal hours spent in the physical museum, but one which lends their expertise, individually or as a whole, in specific areas to create a solid decision making body to surmount challenges and move the museum forward toward excellence.. We are open to suggestions from our public and membership with expertise in fund raising, recruiting, adver-tising, financial planning, office management, accounting, re-tail sales and property management.

Nominees selected by the Executive Committee, serving as the Nominating Committee of the Board will be presented at the Annual Meeting. Suggestions may be phoned, emailed or posted to the museum on or before March 6, 2013 for their re-view.

BCHM revised by-laws require a member of the Board of Direc-tors to be a dues paying member of the museum. One-third of the board members rotate off yearly. They can be re-elected to succeed themselves.

This year’s rotation includes: Ralph Veller and Theresa Harden. Nominees selected at this time by the Executive Committee include, Ralph Veller, Theresa Harden and Coletta Bailey. If elected, these nominees will serve a three year term to begin immediately following the Annual Meeting.

Please remit your 2013 membership dues these to the muse-um on or before the date set for the Annual Meeting.
