One of the most distinguished siren sounds of summer is that of the ice cream truck trailing through the neighborhood. This year, more than ever, we need to treat ourselves to the largest cone and top it with all our favorites. We can all use a little something that'll make us feel like a kid again.

to help plan a fun filled weekend!
Well, 2020 has been nothing if not interesting! So, for this issue we’re
trying to put a temporary suspension on reality and revisit the first summer of the new millennium to see what was happening in the year 2000. For me personally, I was 10 years old and at camp where my biggest question of the day was who was going to be my buddy at swim. And based on the spelling in the letters I sent home that summer, no one would have ever imagined I’d end up getting to write this letter here and now.
In the following pages we take a trip down memory lane to relive what was being celebrated in pop culture (hint: you’re
about to get a certain Britney Spears song stuck in your head), reimagine an East End itinerary for the kid still within all of us (complete with where to sneak in a second – or third – scoop of your favorite flavor piled high with toppings, of course), and look back on wardrobe choices we thought we’d never live down but have actually come back around (see mom, this is why I never throw anything away!).
A lot can happen in 20 years, but I hope one thing continues to stay the same: let summer always mean good times with good people. That’s something that’ll never go outta style.
Cheers!

This Summer, Be a Kid Again
Summer, like youth, doesn’t last forever.
But if you’ve been grinding away at work (or at home!) and are ready for a seemingly endless summer escape that will make you feel forever young, look no further than the East End. From playdates to drive-ins, finger food to candy shops, we’ve got just the itinerary to have you feeling like yourself again in no time – but much younger (and more fun).
Forget about making par and leave your handicap at home at Hamptons
Mini Golf, an 18-hole putt-putt course anchored by miniature versions of historic Hamptons landmarks. A central waterfall fills the course’s ponds and sets a soothing soundtrack while the Montauk Lighthouse and Conscience Point Rock offer playful obstacles among the neatly manicured holes. You can even stay out late: the course is open until 11 PM daily throughout the end of September. After all, the cool kids don’t just go to the Watermill Museum on summer vacation. They putt through it!

Get BackGet BackBy Leah Blewett
Nothing makes you feel like a kid again quite like getting out on the water at top
speed. For that, there’s East End Jet Ski, offering jet ski rentals by the half hour or the hour. When you arrive, check out their private beach (home to beach volleyball and tug-o-war tournaments, so bring your squad!), then get on the ‘ski and onto the bay. The water you’ll be skimming is no more than five feet deep and you’ll be fitted for a lifejacket before you head out. We might be feeling like kids, but the adults in us know that safety comes first.

What’s more child-like than bingeing on a surfeit of your
favorite sweets? Once we get older, fears of calories (or worse – sugar, gluten, nuts…) tend to keep our hands out of the candy jar. But you’ll have no such fears at Candied Anchor, where favorites like Mary Janes and candy cigarettes are colorfully displayed right alongside sugar-free, gluten-free and nut-free options. Craving something cold? Check out sister shop Frozen Anchor, new this summer, open from 11 AM to 11 PM daily.

Gooey cheeseburgers. Crisp onion rings. Towering
milkshakes crusted with cookie crumbles and topped with whipped cream. This is the stuff that kids’ culinary dreams are made of, and if you ask us, you never really outgrow a great burger. So, Union Burger Bar married our childhood favorites with luxe ingredients like beef from renowned Niman Ranch, plus a thoughtful menu of beer, wine, and cocktails. Pro tip: Shake off the #sundayscaries with their Sunday Shakes Special: half-price classic shakes from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, just in time to grab one for the road on your way back to the city.
(631.377.3323; www.unionburgerbar.com; 40 Bowden Sq., Southampton)
Pizza party! No, really: the pies at Best Pizza & Dive Bar are
way too much to eat by yourself, so bring a crowd. Skip the salad (what kid orders salad, anyway?!) and pile on your favorite toppings. Garlic and raw onion, anyone? After all, we’re kids! We don’t need to worry about kissing anyone with garlic breath – just waiting 30 minutes before we jump back into the pool or the ocean. And hey, if you need a way to pass those minutes, there is a full bar – a benefit that the kid in you couldn’t enjoy, but the adult definitely can.

Feeling like a kid again is a family affair at John’s Drive-In, the
Montauk staple that’s been welcoming travelers with classic American fare at their indoor and outdoor tables since 1967. Today, the business is in the capable hands of David and Maureen Rutkowski and their kids, Alex and John, making them the perfect place to indulge in a kid-approved throwback meal. If you’re not into dining out, they’ll even deliver to your summer share or hotel. And what kid didn’t dream of burgers and fries on demand during TV Time??

They may not look like the dance parties of yore, but DJ nights are
back and going strong at Southampton Social Club. With a spacious garden and private cabanas, their weekend DJ dance parties bring the lively spirit of a club to the outdoors, helping you avoid crowded dancefloors while still getting down to this… sick… beat. Bottle service is available, and reservations are required, both because space is limited and to be sure that you and your fellow music lovers have room to socially distance while being sociable. Strap on your best “going out” mask and dance til dawn – just like you did when you were young.

“Anything you can do, I can do better. I can do anything better than you.” Well,
then put your money where your mouth is at The Clubhouse…! This multi-purpose entertainment venue is full of reasons to stay out past curfew, from trivia tournaments to mini golf to an all-new-for-2020 menu. Dishes like the Caddy Shack Lobster Roll, with remoulade on a toasted bun with pickles and chips and The Old Italian Flatbread, with Gorgonzola, scallions, figs, prosciutto, arugula, lemon zest and olive oil, will fuel your late-night revelry all summer long.

Adversity is no stranger to Sag Harbor Cinema, which
welcomed moviegoers for 100 years on Main Street before a devastating fire in December 2016. Since then, a devoted team of film lovers have worked to restore the movie house, and COVID-19 is no match for their efforts. Their latest innovation? Sag Harbor Cinema @Home, which features first-run and classic films that you view via “virtual ticket” online. The line-up changes frequently, and is sometimes complemented by live drive-in films, as well. Check out their website for the latest – and don’t forget to stock up on popcorn!

2. At the Summer
Olympics in Sydney, Australia, USA
won two gold medals in basketball with players
like Allan Houston and Jason Kidd leading the men’s team, while basketball royalty such as Chamique Holdsclaw, Lisa Leslie, and Sheryl Swoopes highlighted the women’s team.
Without any GPS
apps on that Motorola flip phone in your pocket, you needed
to get online to Mapquest to print pages upon pages of directions for your summer road trip.
1.Memorial Day Weekend festivities may have included fond memories of Beverly Hills, 90210, which ended its magical run on May 17, but TV audiences sure got over it fast considering 51.7 million people tuned in to watch the first season finale of Survivor.
5. Text you later? More like, hit you up on AIM. Digital communication
was instant, but you needed to be at a
computer to partake. Forget FaceTime; the iPhone didn’t come
out till 2007. Facebook wasn’t even The
Facebook yet.
Baseball is synonymous with summer, and 20 years ago the Mets
and Yankees treated New Yorkers to strong
seasons that culminated with the teams meeting in the World Series, the
first “Subway Series” since 1956.
The big summer blockbuster movies included Scary Movie, X-Men, and Gladiator, but the big breadwinner was Mission: Impossible 2, which earned over $215 million (according to boxoffcemojo.com) after its release on May 24. The theme song is totally playing in your head right now.
In August, Democrats and Republicans held their nominating
conventions in Los Angeles and Philadelphia, respectively, tapping Al Gore and George W. Bush to run for president. The controversy surrounding the election results turned politics into pop culture.
11. Sure, the Olympics are still the Olympics, but the biggest international competition that summer was of course the Triwizard Tournament, which took place at Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. The Goblet of Fire, the fourth book in the Harry Potter series, was released July 8, 2000.
8. On June 8, Britney Spears performed the first concert of her “Oops!...I Did It Again” Tour, which had
a total estimated attendance of about 1.5 million people. Before the month was out, she rocked four shows at the Jones Beach Amphitheatre.
By the time Summer 2000 rolled around people had left their Y2K fears behind and were ready to embrace a few months of fun in the sun. And
though it may not feel as if the year 2000 is that far in the past, it is amazing to realize these relics of our collective attention were fully 20 years ago.

2000
REMEMBERWHEN?A Lot Can Change in Two DecadesBy Joshua Sipkin
SoShuckedUp Where to Shell Out for
the Freshest Oysters
Full contentedness on the half shell: oysters, plus cocktails, plus sunshine
and water views is arguably summer’s most indulgent combination. For fans of this most unique shellfish, here are five spots for the sultriest slurps.By Julie Jones
Oysters at Sel Rrose
BELL &ANCHORHardly a single seat at the Bell
& Anchor in Sag Harbor doesn’t afford a magnificent view over the waters of Mill Creek Marina. The same duo behind Sag Harbor’s Beacon and East Hampton’s Fresno, David Loewenberg and Sam McCleland, runs a tight ship here, where the service has been impeccable since its opening in 2012, and the diverse menu has continued to creatively fashion the freshest seafood into a range of textures and tastes, such as a saffron-rich Bouillabaisse, Thai-style mussels, and cheesy shrimp and grits made even more indulgent with crispy pork belly.
With minimal furnishings between the walls – three of which are windows – the atmosphere is buzzing but romantic, urged on by an exceptional cocktail menu and wine list that has been awarded by Wine Spectator every year since the restaurant’s inauguration. A local tap rotating three wines from local wineries is the perfect accompaniment to a starting platter of oysters, which come from the East and West coasts based on the best availability. A bacon oyster shooter ups the ante by dousing a local oyster in bacon vodka and Bloody Mary.
(3253 Noyac Rd., Sag Harbor)
MORTY’S OYSTER STAND For a sun-drenched oyster lunch, the back deck at on-trend Morty’s Oyster
Stand, one of the top restaurants that opened last year, is diffcult to beat. Umbrellas shading modern white patio furnishings surrounded by greenery make the design as casual-chic as the oysters are fresh, brought in from East Coast waters and served with lemons, cocktail sauce, and lime-mint mignonette, or broiled – a rare preparation to find in these parts – with parsley and garlic.
Star chef Sam Talbot has fleshed out the lunch menu with an oyster po’boy and steak and chicken sandwiches, while dinner offers deeper options like black bass ceviche and a chili squid with jackfruit, togarashi, and radish. But for the brighter parts of the day, it’s the cocktail menu that should take the most attention: among the considerations are chilled reds by the glass, whites specially selected for summer, local craft beers on draft, specialty cocktails, and frozen drinks including a BBC – the famed Bailey’s Banana Colada from Cyril’s Fish house, the legendary former occupant of Morty’s digs.
(2167 Montauk Hwy, Montauk)
GREY LADYTried-and-true for friends and groups, Grey
Lady in Montauk consistently serves up good food and drinks with a great time. Nautical
themes of driftwood, blue-and-white stripes, and vintage photographs as art set the backdrop for a lively scene around the mosaic-tiled bar, which on weekends moves outside for “sun sets” featuring live music and DJs throughout the season. But for chiller lunches or weekday dinners, there’s all the comfort food that comes from being by the sea: creamy crab on toast, grilled fish tacos, fried seafood platters, steaming bowls of seafood linguine, and – of course – big platters of oysters, available by the half-dozen, dozen, and piecemeal.
Other raw-bar options include clams, shrimp cocktail, Maine lobster, and a daily crudo, which can be combined in different ways into larger “Plateaus” to best serve groups, with bottles of Prosecco addable for $35. Or, go for any one of the tropical cocktails, available by the glass or carafe.
(440 West Lake Dr., Montauk)
SEL RROSETo experience the art of the oyster, turn an eye to Sel Rrose, one of the
most eccentric openings in the Hamptons last year. A twist on the original in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, the East End Sel Rrose was inspired by the trips that best friends Salvador Dalí and Marcel Duchamp used to take together to the southern Spanish coast, nourishing their creative spirits with the sunny sea air and wine-filled nights. The design is undeniably stunning with black-and-white illustrated murals, enormous banquettes, a centerpiece bar, and all manner of cool light fixtures, accompanied by a pan-European menu featuring a fennel-tinged poached calamari, truffle risotto croquettes, and braised short ribs.
But the focus here is the raw bar, serving oysters from both coasts individually or in grand plateaux with lobster, mussels, and shrimp, washed down with any one of 14 gorgeously crafted cocktails, poured with things like herbes
des Provence syrup, rosemary-infused concord grapes, lavender ice, and hopped grapefruit bitters. From the historical concept to the last drop of a passionfruit spritz, every detail here is as much an aphrodisiac as the beloved mollusks.

CHEF SPOTLIGHT INTERVIEW
Say Bonjour to
DANIEL BOULUDKITCHENQ&A: Chef Daniel Boulud
Memorial Day weekend marked the unoffcial start to summer, as well
as the offcial launch of a new concept from Chef Daniel Boulud: Daniel Boulud Kitchen. Boulud already has a host of New York eateries, including DANIEL, Café Boulud, Bar Boulud, Boulud Sud, and db Bistro Moderne. But now the culinary flavor of his French classics can be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home, from Manhattan to the Hamptons, with plans to expand to Westchester and Greenwich.
The weekly-changing three-course menu starts at $75 per person along with à la carte options and features dishes such as White & Green Asparagus with Poached Egg Dressing, Lobster Salad Provençale, Grilled Halibut with Morels & Spring Peas, Daniel’s Classic Beef Duo, and Opera Cake with Crème Anglaise, or a Fraisier. Add-ons include bottles of wine and cocktail mixes for two like the Classic Negroni.
Hamptons Monthly had a chance to catch up with the Chef to learn a little more about this new avenue of business for him, his favorite summer produce, and how you should take him up on adding on that Negroni as he closes out with a toast. So, raise your glass and read on.
By Robin Singer
Congrats on the new venture! It’s said that the mother of invention is necessity, and with the timing it seems this new part of your business was a response to COVID-19 and its impact on the restaurant industry. What inspired you to move forward with this delivery concept, and what are you most looking forward to in tackling this new challenge?
I already have a catering company in New York City, and we have done takeout before, but never focused on creating a brand. We were simply giving service to our own customers. With the increased demand, we decided to create Daniel Boulud Kitchen. I am looking forward to continuing to grow the brand, diversifying it, and offering a variety of menus.
The menu will be rotating. What are some of the considerations you take when deciding what to prepare, and how will meals be delivered to ensure the highest level of quality associated with the Daniel Boulud name?
The menu will be changing periodically. We have five brands representing my name, and it is an opportunity to bring each of them to our customers from fine dining to bistro and grab & go. In New York City we have a few different delivery options, like Postmates and Tock-to-Go. Also, we use our Lexus car to make private deliveries. With proper care of the taste and packaging, we do our best to maintain our standards of excellence.
In the summer there is no shortage of incredible produce, especially with all of the locally grown offerings in the Hamptons. What are three of your favorite seasonal fruits/vegetables and favorite dish to make with each?
Corn for a chilled corn soup with local seafood.
Tomatoes, to create a beautiful ratatouille along with eggplant and zucchini.
Of course, peaches, to make wonderful Peach Melba with ice cream or whipped cream and a raspberry coulis.
A favorite summer food for the Hamptons set is lobster – prepared in all fashions ranging from classic broiled or boiled, to the traditional roll, and even in some cases sitting atop a burger. Can we expect to see any of your own takes on the tails and claws?
I would definitely like to feature lobster on my menu over the summer. I love it grilled with a delicious seven-herb butter, lemon, and cracked pepper.
Five percent of sales from Daniel Boulud Kitchen will go directly to benefit Hand in Hand, a foundation you started back in March at the
beginning of the temporary shutdown to restaurants for guests. Can you tell us a little more about the organization?
Started in March 2020 in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis and the temporary closing of our restaurants to guests. The Foundation supports those employees who have not been able to work and are experiencing extraordinary financial hardship. We are grateful for those individuals who have generously donated to the organization to date and are hopeful to bring back all of our furloughed employees as restaurants slowly start to re-open, but it’s a long road ahead to be sure.
I imagine these past four months have been some of the most challenging you’ve faced in your career. You’re not only a chef, but a restauranteur with 12 locations worldwide and a responsibility for many jobs.
We have learned it is the people and the community who come first. What people can do right now is continue to support restaurants, charities and foundations, both locally and nationwide. New coalitions have been formed because of the pandemic to protect staff, suppliers, farmers, purveyors, and many other small restaurant businesses. If people continue to support these new organizations, the hospitality business will continue to improve and have a stronger voice.
Food is a way of bringing people together, and that’s something we need more now than maybe ever before, and it’s what you’re offering through your beautiful meals. So, let’s for a moment look at this as the ultimate Daniel Boulud dinner party, and as the host you’re asked to make a toast. What would you like to say?
“To my family, friends, and team, all those who have given support during this diffcult time, I raise my glass to better days ahead. Santé!”
For more information or to place an order now for delivery, visit www.DanielBouludKitchen.com. Pick-up from Restaurant Daniel is also available.
What people can do right now is continue to support restaurants, charities and foundations, both locally and nationwide.

getting spritzyEVERYONE IN THE CLUB
In the cyclical nature of all things, the spritz has come back
around to experience a new heyday. The classic European cocktail of a bitter liquour, such as Campari or Aperol, mixed with something sparkling, such as champagne or Prosecco, is being revived in a plethora of creative ways. Here’s what’s bubbling up.

Long Island’s 32-year-old Wölffer Estate is one of the most established wineries
on the East End, with a range of respected wines, a gorgeous vineyard for tours and tastings, and now two restaurants, both named Wölffer Kitchen, in Sag Harbor and Amagansett. They differ slightly in feel, the former a bit more airy and modern, and the latter more cozily coastal. The menus are nearly identical, with upscale American food like grilled fishes, homemade pastas, salads, and made-to-share appetizers, and – of course – an extensive menu of wines, from both the Estate as well as top vineyards around the world. A select few cocktails come at the start of the wine list, not least of which is the High Five, a sparkling drink of gin, grapefruit, lime, and Aperol.

Hotel bars in the Hamptons can be quite scene-y, often set by a pool for
a bikini-clad clientele or studded with DJs and party nights throughout the season. But Gurney’s Montauk brings something unique to the table with its Regent Cocktail Club, a city-slick cocktail lounge that would feel as much at home in Manhattan as it does here on the oceanfront. Mixing leather banquets with Aztec-inspired textiles and opening up onto a wooden terrace with fairy lights and firepits aplenty, Regent has a cast of mixologists who concoct some of the most sophisticated drinks around. Among the offerings, find a leveled-up rendition of the Aperol spritz: the Herbal Spritz, with Belvedere vodka rather than gin, Aperol, and tonic water.

Some of the best Italian pizzas in the Hamptons come at Sag Pizza, a wood-
fired oven joint that luxuriously tops its pies with the likes of truffles, fine meats, infused oils, and fresh cheeses, served alongside assorted other delicacies ranging from burrata to fresh local tuna crudo. But anyone who’s been to Italy knows that equally important as pizza is what’s sipped with it, and in the summer, this means something cold and bubbly. Like the rest of the menu, Sag Pizza’s take on a summer sparkling cocktail is decidedly gourmet, a Grapefruit Spritz that mixes its namesake ingredients with vodka, St. Germaine, and Contratto, a classic Italian aperitif. Sip it at the end of meal along with some of the homemade gelato in flavors like cassis and black cherry amaretto, and you’ll be transported straight into Amalfi dreams.

What drink is more apt for Baron’s Cove than something
boozy, chic, and sweet? This resort that’s been here since the 1940s when famous writers and artists such as Truman Capote and Jackson Pollock frequented its grounds still lends itself well to long, hazy American summer days – and even longer nights – with its manicured lawns, cerulean salt-water pool, flawless tennis courts, and glorious bar where in-the-know New Yorkers still flock for drinks and conversations that last long into starry nights. Recalling a mix of the jet-setting flair and American taste that its artistic clientele once embodied, the Aperol Spritz is the kind of drink that you think will start the night but ends up ending it too. But don’t worry – a spa awaits for detoxing in the morning.

Getting yourself ready for sum-mer goes beyond your clothes, skin, and hair. Your smile is a
pivotal part of your overall look. Guys, this requires more than just brushing twice a day and visits to the dentist (though those are an absolute must). Even if you’ve gotten compli-ments on your chompers, it’s crucial that you use the right products to keep those teeth looking healthy and bright.

styleStyle icons can come from anywhere. Ultimately, it’s
all about who and what appeals to you and your own sensibilities. Some might think the worlds of fashion and athletics wouldn’t mix, but actually there is a long history of collaborations and endorsements, with athletes stepping their cleats onto runways, as well as editorials and social media shout-outs. Michael Jordan was the spokesman for Hanes. LeBron James launched his own clothing line called UNKNWN. The list is long. Provocative, inspiring, and bold, we’ve compiled four sports juggernauts with an aesthetic that’s undeniably their own. Yes, these guys wear uniforms, but don’t let that fool you. In their down time, their off-the-field styles are absolutely baller.

NBA force of nature Russell Westbrook has an eye for statement pieces. Whether he’s
strutting in a burgundy/navy striped suit or pairing casual sweats with a vividly printed turtleneck, everything he wears is a signal saying “all eyes over here, folks!” The look we’ve chosen is a more casual one, something that’s ideal for a day hanging with friends.
Barney Cools’ Ripple Tee starts your day off with a burst of brightness. This super-soft crew neck features red, blue, and yellow tie-
dye and a comfortable regular fit. Match this with Spitfire’s Chemistry Sunglasses, whose tinted round specs showcase an amalgamation of the ultra-modern with a hint of vintage cool. Westbrook isn’t afraid of a little bling, so you shouldn’t be either. Title of Work is a purveyor of some pretty sick baubles, and we love the micro mesh curb chain. It gives a subtle flash to offset the overall look in a way that sidesteps what people might expect.
It wouldn’t be the summer out East without a few rounds
of tennis, and who from that world is a better style icon than Roger Federer? A man with refined taste, his approach is a celebration of his athleticism.
Start things off with Uniqlo’s Dry-Ex Crew Neck Tee, which you can find in a ton of different colors. Swiss native Federer has a penchant for pairing basics with a track jacket. Fred Perry’s chest panel version, which you can find in bright blue, green, or burgundy, flashes a white block stripe across the front. Finish this look off with a pair of bright white Cloud running sneakers from On. Federer is actually in partnership with this exciting company, which boasts inventive construction and striking design.

Linebacker Von Miller has been kicking major ass as a defensive player for the
NFL’s Denver Broncos at the same time as storming his way through stylists’ wish lists. The Texas native has integrated his Buddy Holly glasses into many of the looks that have made him a fashion icon (so if you’ve got specs, pay extra close attention!).
Designed to be a wardrobe mainstay, The Anytimer short-sleeve button down from Kenny Flowers is a patterned masterpiece
with bright pops of blue lines, flamingos, and sunglasses. Goodlife offers a stock of essential pieces, but their logo hat is a simple and to-the-point encapsulation of their ethos: your Goodlife is whatever you want it to be. As for a key accessory for a weekend away, a Herschel Supply Company backpack is dependable and majorly on trend. The company has become this generation’s offcial knapsack, with a nod to the old fashioned, these packs feature the company’s signature magnetic fasteners.

Cristiano Ronaldo
Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo has amassed a following of
fashion devotees as avid as the ones who flock to see him hit the pitch. His approach blends casual with high style. UNTUCKit’s button downs are a dapper point of entry to achieve this look. They’re comfortable around the middle, with a clean and preppy upper, you can easily find the pattern or solid that works for you.
On bottom, pick up a pair of AG's Griffn Shortss . These tailored chinos are available in seven subdued colors, allowing the focus to be completely on you. Breathable and built to last, these are the kinds of shorts that will serve you for many summers to come. The finishing touch to this casual ensemble are a pair of espadrilles from Soludos. They’ve got quirky options ranging from the Negroni smoking slip-ons to their fresh grey camo

You ReallyAught To Return of
Early '00s
It’s time for a mash up. While the decades preceding the early 2000’s each had very distinctive shapes, colors, and patterns,
the first 10 years of the new millennium was about blending diverse themes and styles. Globalization majorly influenced the direction of fashion at the turn of the century, so tinges of Middle Eastern, Asian, and Australian textiles were front and center. Another big shift came with the early incorporation of eco-friendly clothes into the mainstream.
As trends change on the daily, it’s kind of crazy that only 10 years ago there were some things in vogue that are already on their way to vintage territory. The good news is that some of those odds and ends are back in a big way, and we want to celebrate them. While some of these pieces might aesthetically have retained some semblance of a foothold in pop culture, they’ve been given a 2020 reboot.

Slip dresses have been around for ages, the flirty
and billowy effect working beautifully for daytime and evening. They’re a simple affair; easy on and out the door. These little numbers were a case of the inside coming out, as the concept originated from actual slips that began showing up on runways as full-fledged pieces in their own right.
The Demeter Slip Dress from Anthropologie is an example of how design can draw upon the aesthetic of an undergarment and blossom into an elegant piece of evening wear. As delicate and enchanting as its namesake, the iridescence is a carryover from the slips and nightgowns of yesteryear. Ditto, too, Zara’s black and brown version, which takes a more sculptural approach at the bust, but is still strongly tied to the same flirty origin. It is with Aritzia’s Wilfred Canto Dress that we get a mild bit of departure, with the top half fully embracing the sexy intimacy of a slip.
The Slip Dress
Ah, flared jeans. As a staple of the sixties and seventies, and
then making a big comeback in the 90’s, they managed to be a major part of the early ’00’s before the stage was set for their skinny siblings. One of the best parts of flares is their capacity for balancing out the silhouette of the leg. Curves are accentuated and then complemented.
Mother’s Denim Tomcat Roller Fray Jeans are a jubilant homage to the late 60’s, from the hippie chic softness, frayed edges, and wide leg. We’d be remiss if we discussed flares and didn’t mention Levi’s. The undeniable leader in all things denim, their Ribcage Wide Leg Women’s Jeans in Icy Ecru are waist high and do wonders for wider hips, accentuating your waist and flowing away down to the floor. Often with flares, your shoes can get hidden away, which brings us to Paige Atley's Starstruck Destructed Ankle Flares. They’re a more contemporary take, with bits of texture and a high-water hemline that lets your ankles breath.
Flared Jeans
The new millennium provided us with a countless number of hair accessories.
From jewels and rhinestones, to the reincorporation of textiles, and the return of hats as statement pieces, there was a lot to choose from. Britney and Christina rocked butterfly hair clips in the early 2000’s, and now they’ve had a sparkling comeback. Brands like Urban Outfitters that have welcomed these kinds of vintage trends have these adorable bijous on offer.
Hair rings were a bit more obscure, but no less eye catching. Free People has revitalized them with its engraved renditions, letting that cascade of hardware add a steampunk edge to your look. And what about bucket hats? Perfect for summer, these sometimes overlooked lids, like ASOS’s Turn Back, will sweep you back to the days of Dawson’s Creek.
As with any era, eyewear can set a vital tone, changing
up your ensemble entirely. If eyes are the portals to the soul, then specs are the window dressing. Y2K trends for your peepers included everything from wraparound frames to the return of bookish Buddy Holly glasses from the 60’s.
While it’s been a while since we’ve heard Paris Hilton’s catch phrase, Le Specs has unveiled its translucent, frame-free “That’s Hot” sunglasses just in time for summer. Urban Outfitters, meanwhile, schools us with their “As If” rimless rectangle shades. These actually channel both Alicia Silverstone’s mid-90’s glamor, while adding a nod to the new millennium with a bedazzled lens. Rectangle frames were also huge in the early 00’s, with celebs like Pink and Gwen Stefani donning them on red carpets. Oliver Peoples’ Indio frames(emailed) are a throwback to these bad boys, adopting the wide, angular shape for a 2020 return.

COMEDIAN SPOTLIGHT INTERVIEW
JIM GAFFIGANServing Up Social Absurdities
These days comedian Jim Gaffgan is running a 24/7 diner, which he
and his wife Jeannie jokingly describe as "mediocre food for ungrateful recipients" for their five children. When he's not cleaning up fruit snacks and juice boxes strewn all over his house, Gaffgan is on TV every week with his Quarantine Updates airing on CBS Sunday Morning, which offer glimpses into the famous comedian/actor/writer's home, which are not too different from many other people’s lives at the moment: working from home, arguing over devices, non-stop meals and news, but also a lot of much-needed family time.
Jim Gaffigan is most certainly a purveyor of absurdities, whether taking jabs at distance learning and increased screen time, explaining how the meaning of alcohol changes in each decade of life, acknowledging how weddings and fashion shows are weird and uncomfortable, and observing the sheer laziness of food delivery. Most of these topics have been covered in Gaffgan's Grammy-nominated comedy specials Mr. Universe, Obsessed, Cinco
and Quality Time, confirming he'd be one heck of a guy to hang with at a bar or as a travel companion.
He continues his string of comedy specials with Jim Gaffgann: The Pale Tourist, his second Amazon Prime Video stint premiering July 24, the same day his new crime-thriller film Most Wanted comes to streaming platforms. Known for his many voices from his soft whisper to his high-pitched screech, his drunk voice to women's voices, his tough-guy New Yorker and his Southern accent, he's one of the most relatable comics on the scene. He's uploading a new YouTube video daily, sharing nostalgic foods with his two youngest boys Mike and Pat, and just trying to make us laugh and reflect during this crazy time. Gaffgan spoke with Hamptons Monthly about some of his favorite travels before the borders closed, how comedians need to access real life to find the funny, and how quarantining in his previous two-bedroom in New York City with his wife and five kids would have been nearly impossible.
Well I think the answer depends on which one I -- whether I was with my family or not -- and some of it is, I enjoy going to new places so much, I would say, you know, Asia. I also toured Asia. It's unfair to compare all of Asia, which is so many countries to Canada. And I love Spain; I went to three cities there and there is so much to see and to know. Gosh, I think I would go immediately back, and I was interrupted in the middle of being in Bogotá. Argentina closed their borders back in March, and once they closed I could go on to Brazil, but I decided to come back immediately; I didn't want to be separated from my family. I think I would have to finish the Latin American cities. I feel bad 'cause I had a big tour of Mexico.
Jim, we know you filmed your new The Pale Tourist special in Toronto and Barcelona. Of all the countries and cities you toured, which one would you magically visit right now if you could and we were not in quarantine?
by Michael Menachem
You had a leading role in the thriller American Dreamer recently. What is your opinion on comedians and funny people being able to tackle drama?
I think that obviously it depends on the comedian if they care about acting. In some ways, it makes perfect sense because comedy is making light of a truth and sometimes those truths are frustration. A lot of people think that comedy is just pain plus time, tragedy plus time, so there is something. Comedians have access to some of that seriousness.
You famously lived in a two-bedroom apartment in New York City with your wife and five kids until 2015. Can you even start to imagine what quarantining in that space would have been like?
Oh yeah. Well it also depends on the size of the children. I think quarantining or doing a quarantine with children in general in a New York City apartment is pretty impossible. It's interesting, you know, 'cause the appeal of New York City is that you compromise size for convenience and so having five kids at the time, two of them were essentially babies, so you can put a crib just about anywhere and they're not going to be emotionally scarred. We had a crib in the bedroom which was also my offce which was also the TV room. And then we had three kids in the other room. We had two beds.
By the way, we lived downtown, and a lot of these are old tenement buildings 60, 80 years ago were holding twice as many people, right? A teenager needs a certain amount of space, whereas little kids want to be in close proximity. Like during this whole COVID thing the kids have regressed a little bit, not dramatically but some of the independence has slipped away from them a bit. They hear things on the news. We are trying to help frontline workers. The conversation has always been that we are living through a pandemic.
Your YouTube channel seems to be pretty active lately. Are you writing and creating more material now that you're not touring than you normally would?
It's a different type of writing and creating. Obviously if I was acting in a movie or touring on stand-up, I wouldn't have the opportunity. We have five kids so there are no babysitters; it's literally us. I love YouTube. And I am posting a daily video, clips from my shows, sometimes it's me preparing dinner, also the "Mike and Pat Show" trying things I ate while I was in my childhood. They never had bologna, they never had SpaghettiOs. In two weeks where are we going to be? We don't know. But there is this belief that we should social distance, people are not back to normal, so there is a desire for easily accessible entertainment. I do a new YouTube video every day.
You are one of only 10 comedians to sell out Madison Square Garden, and this month you were slated to play four shows at Radio City Music Hall. Is there anything different in your approach to a show when it's a big stadium vs. a smaller venue?
Well, there is something about Radio City and Madison Square Garden where it's such an event, whether you're going there to see The Rockettes or you're seeing The Knicks or you're seeing a concert. The experience in the venue is unique. Madison Square Garden is obviously famous, but it's
an enormous venue. Radio City is also a theater but also enormous. It's a completely different task. I've never driven an 18-wheeler, but it's a different skill set to do a show that size.
You are going to get feedback from the audience; it is a conversation. Not the same thing as doing Town Hall or Skirball Center or even The Beacon. As a performer you have to be conscious of an intimacy, so even if people are at Radio City you want people to forget where they are. You don't want them thinking about the setting. Maybe there is excitement about the setting initially, but 6,000 people laughing is really
powerful. It really is a one-on-one conversation.
You are starring in a new crime drama called Most Wanted alongside Josh Hartnett and Antoine Olivier Pilon coming July 24 to streaming platforms. What is on Jim Gaffgan's most wanted list right now in terms of what you wish you could do?
Gosh, you know, I miss stand-up. I miss traveling and I miss the creative energy and the endorphins of a stand-up show. I'm sure like everyone we get these calendar notifications for things we wanted to do. Like, hey you're going here, no I'm not! I just miss the nomadic lifestyle, the spontaneity. I think it's really hard for New Yorkers that - people in New York, the lifestyle is kind of tied to a certain level of spontaneity. Where you are going to dinner, are you going to meet friends, are you going to run into people on the subway? That social spontaneity, it's very sad it's not there.
There is a desire for easily accessible
entertainment. I do a new
YouTube video every day.
Human beings are just weird and we just do our own things.
