CHRISTMAS CARDS The first Christmas cards were issued to raise awareness of people in need. In 1843, Sir Henry Cole, in England, wanted to help those living in desolate conditions. • Sir Henry was a writer of children’s books, handbooks for art and design and many more ventures. He was involved in public service for more than 50 years, including assisting with the postal service. • Being a man with many personal and business friends and acquaintances, and considering that people would hand write their Christmas greetings, he felt that he didn’t have time to write them. In 1843, he commissioned artist John Calcott Horsley to design a card that would depict the poor living conditions under which many lived. His idea was to raise awareness and encourage help for the poor. • Ironically, the card that Horsley made for Sir Henry Cole caused quite a stir of criticism. The happy family on the front of the card included a child sipping wine! As in today’s society, this was not acceptable behavior. In spite of the inappropriateness, the Christmas card was a hit. • Neither Cole nor Horsley had any idea of the impact their Christmas cards would have on Britain, later America and even the world over. By 1880 the design and development of cards would become big business and open up opportunities for writers, artists, printers and engravers. • The first Christmas cards were not religious in nature. They usually were quite plain with depictions of animals, winter scenes, girls, dolls and more. A few had drawings of angels. • The first appearance of Christmas cards in the United States was in 1874. Bavarian-born lithographer, Louis Prang, is often referred to as the “Father of the American Christmas card.” • Prang ran a successful printing company in Boston during the late nineteenth century, producing high quality reproductions of famous art work and greeting cards, using a technique called chromolithography. Prior to his cards, Christmas cards were rarely exchanged in America. His cards were among the first to depict religious scenes. • U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first official Christmas card from the White House in 1953. Now, a common practice, the official White House cards are usually designed by prominent American artists and depict White House scenes. In 1961 there were just 2000 recipients of the official cards; by 2005 there were 1.4 million! • One of the largest greeting card companies in the world, Hallmark, has done remarkably well with Christmas cards, wrapping paper, ornaments and more. All kinds of cards are made by the company started by two brothers in 1910 in Norfolk, Nebraska. They moved to Kansas City, Missouri shortly after to be near a bigger market of customers. The slogan, “when you care enough to give the very best,” was adopted in 1944. • The international headquarters for Hallmark are located at Crown Center in Kansas City. The Mayor’s Christmas Tree, one of the tallest in the nation, is erected at Crown Center Square every year. The Hallmark Visitor Center is fun any time of year, with free admission. There are many great exhibits, including one where you can press a button to create a bow that you can keep as a souvenir. • Another free Christmas goody happened a few years ago in Germany. In 2004, the German post office gave away 20 million scented stickers for Christmas cards with smells like fir trees, cinnamon, gingerbread, and more. What a “scent-sational” idea! CHRISTMAS CARDSThe first Christmas cards were issued to raise awareness of people in need. In 1843, Sir Henry Cole, in England, wanted to help those living in desolate conditions. • Sir Henry was a writer of children’s books, handbooks for art and design

and many more ventures. He was involved in public service for more than 50 years, including assisting with the postal service.

The Toros returned to school Monday to a hero’s welcome. This will be the Toros ninth state championship plaque featured in the schools entrance and their second in the past three years. Better still the school and the team is only 9 years old!Spanish Fort scored 31 straight points in the second half to break open a close game and rolled to a 45-14 win over previously unbeaten McAdory.

The Toros went 14-1 for the year and marked the first championship win in Mark Freeman’s tenure as head coach. Both teams fought a tough defensive battle in the first half as Spanish Fort pulled into intermission with a slim 14-7 lead. Super 6 MVP Joel Poe connected with Devonte Patrick for an 18-yard touchdown pass to give Spanish Fort a quick 7-0 lead.

Edward Autrey’s 20-yard run midway through the second period made it 14-0, but McAdory struck back with a 1-yard Kyran Moore scoring run.

Coach Freeman’s Toros scored 17 points in the third period – first on Alexander Theodore’s 20-yard field goal, then on Samuel Tolbert’s 29-yard run. Poe, who was 17-of-24 passing for 177 yards and three scores, fired a 25-yard TD strike to Jonathan Cook and later a 21-yard scoring pass to Patrick early in the fourth quarter. He finished Spanish Fort’s scoring with a 10-yard TD run with 8:30 remaining.

Coach David Powell’s Yellow Jackets scored on a 47-yard pass from Kyran Moore to Jonathan Witherspoon to round out the scoring.

Poe also rushed for 33 yards on eight carries and Tolbert added 100 yards on 12 runs. Patrick finished with six catches for 53 yards and Blain Crain nabbed five for 48 yards. The Toros finished with 377 total yards.

McAdory, which had 91 yards rushing and 96 passing, all on Moore’s 6-of-15 passing. He was sacked for 53 yards in losses on 11 runs and finished with minus-13 yards net. Witherspoon had three catches for 69 yards and a TD.

Tyler Johnston had six tackles, recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass for the Toros’ defense. Ronald Smith also had eight tackles. Brian Sledge and Taylor Reynolds each had seven stops for McAdory while Robert Cooks also had an interception.

Waiting By Jeff Munroe

Read: Ezekiel 21:24-27 Until he comes whose right it is; to him I will give it. (v. 27 NRSV) When my son was ten years old his grandparents bought him a giant Swiss Army Knife with 75 func-tions. (What boy doesn’t need a pharmaceutical spat-ula among all the other blades and gizmos?) He was beside himself with joy about this wonderful gift. As it was being purchased, the clerk asked if he wanted his name engraved on it. Of course he did. When the engraving was finished the clerk handed the knife to him and said, “Now, you must not touch it for the next two hours.” Those two hours crawled by agonizingly slowly for my son. Because he had a special way of irritatingly

sharing his impatience with everyone around him, they went by almost as slowly for us. We all longed for the time to pass. It can be very, very difficult to wait. Waiting is one of the key themes of Advent. Once a year we reset the church calendar and go into wait-ing mode again. We wait for the day Ezekiel spoke of—the day when the false leaders will be cleared out and God will make everything right. The crown will be stripped off of the imposter and given to the one whose right it is. Like my son incessantly watching the clock until the wonderful present was fully his, we long and hope and wait for the Advent (the “Com-ing”) of our Lord. Prayer: Come thou long expected Jesus, born a child and yet a king.

ActivateActivate your love for God and for others by telling them that God loves them and is for them, not against them. Be sure to say,” I love you too.” There are some people who think God doesn’t love them and many who think no one cares. You can make a difference. Words that align with God’s words are powerful. A smile is not a smile until given away. A bell is not a bell until you ring it. A song is not a song until you sing it. Love in your heart is not put there to stay for love is not until you give it away. There are many hurting people and you can help by showing kindness and giving them the words of life, God’s word. There are people who worry about every little thing when if Jesus is in you, every care can be cast upon him for he tells us that he cares for us. Worry can do much harm. It can depress us and drag us down. Most of us do tend to worry at times, but let us be quick to cast those cares upon the Lord and let him take them for he tells us in his word that he works everything out for good to all who love him and are called according to his purpose. May we make a difference in someone’s life by giving of the blessings that God has given us.

A Note From the Editor“So, did I ever tell you about the time I was a big Christmas gift in my el-ementary school holiday program?” I asked my family a few nights ago. The snickers, facial expressions and “no”s made me realize that I had never shared this story and Christmastime was the perfect time to re-veal that, yes, I too had some really embarrassing childhood moments. In 4th grade I was assigned the part of “Christmas Gift” in our annual Christmas program. I was one of four others playing the role and I was very excited because, a. this was a non-speaking part and, b. my cos-tume would consist of a box, decorated with gift wrap, with holes cut in for my head and arms. At the time, my mother was an employee at Alabama Power and she came home with a great, tall appliance box we would later fashion into a costume. Our play rehearsals went on for about a week and finally the day came for dress rehearsal. When all of the “Christmas Gifts” arrived at rehearsal, I was tickled pink to find that my costume was, in fact, the most grand - just as I had expected. I (and the three other gifts) donned my costume and waited patiently for my moment to arrive during rehearsal. We were to walk down the center aisle and step up on stage. As I reached the steps to the stage I cleared the first few but on the very last step I snagged the edge of my shoe. Because my gift box was so tall and left me no leg and very little arm mobility, I was unable to regain my bal-ance and began to slowly tip over sideways. The fall seemed to take an eternity and I lay there wishing my gift box had been much smaller just like all the other gift boxes. Eventually, a teacher came to my rescue and I found myself very thankful that I had taken my spill during dress rehearsal and not the program. Needless to say, my parents shortened the box before the play. My husband and kids enjoyed a good laugh, at my expense, over dinner as I shared one of my most embarrassing childhood memories. Look-ing back, I now realize that the lesson I learned was all about vanity and pride. It was so important that I wear the most spectacular gift cos-tume, however it was the size of the costume that became my down-fall......literally! Merry Christmas,Audrey Chambers
