BARNUM • Phineas Taylor Barnum is remembered today for the circus that still carries his name: Barnum & Bailey. Barnum got rich because, as he stated, “There’s a sucker born every minute.” • Barnum got his start in show biz after meeting a man who owned an old black slave named Joice Heth. Joice claimed to have been George Washington’s nanny. She said she was 167 years old and had the papers to prove it. She really looked the part: blind, half paralyzed, wrinkled and toothless. Yet her mind was sharp and clear. Joice’s owner had been exhibiting her and had turned a tidy profit. Yet he was tired of the road, so he sold the act to Barnum for $1,000. Barnum and Joice went on tour, and Barnum learned the principles that guided his career from then on: that advertising and publicity are all-important, and that controversy brings the skeptics flocking in. When attendance fell off, Barnum wrote an anonymous letter to the editor claiming that Joice Heth was not a human at all, but merely a clever robot. The debate brought crowds to Barnum’s door. When Joice finally died, an autopsy concluded she was probably not more than 80 years old. • Barnum’s success started not with the circus but with the Barnum Museum in New York City. He bought an old, dusty run-down museum and set out to transform it into a flashy attention-getting show that would keep people coming back for more. One of his tactics was to give away plenty of free picture postcards to tourists, who would show them to all their friends back home. Those friends, when they visited New York, would then be sure to stop in at the Museum. • Barnum discovered that the world loves to ogle human freaks. He made a tradition out of exhibiting the bearded lady, the fat boy, giants, midgets, Siamese twins, albinos, and the Wild Men of Borneo (who were really Hiram and Barney Davis from Long Island). • It was an elephant that led to his teaming up with Bailey. Bailey owned a circus, and one of the elephants became the mother of the first baby elephant ever born in captivity. Barnum couldn’t stand to see someone else get more publicity than himself, so he offered to buy the two elephants. Bailey used Barnum’s offer to get more publicity for himself. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, thought Barnum, and the two teamed up to form the Barnum & Bailey Circus. When their first combined show was scheduled to open in Madison Square Gardens, Barnum paid all expenses for 100 top newspaper reporters from all over the country to come and review the circus. The free publicity he got all over the country ensured success. • By the mid 1880s, the Barnum and Bailey Circus was earning a million dollars a year. Barnum invented the concept of the three ring circus, and coined the phrase, “The Greatest Show On Earth.” Shopkeepers in towns they visited complained about the circus because for weeks after they were gone, the townfolk were too broke to buy anything in their stores. • P. T. Barnum died in 1891 at the age of 82. Several years later, the Ringling Brothers bought the Barnum & Bailey circus. Hello I am a wife of a local Law Enforcement Officer; I

would like to take this time to ask everyone to join me in

Project Blue Light.

“Project Blue Light”

In 1988, Concerns Of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) received

a letter from Mrs. Dolly Craig of Philadelphia, PA, stating

she'd be putting blue lights in her window that holiday

season to remember her son-in-law, Danny Gleason, who

was killed in the line of duty in 1986, and her daughter

Pam, Danny's widow, who was killed in an auto accident

earlier that year. She thought others might like to share

her idea. Dolly's idea is now her legacy.

To participate in Project Blue Light, place an electric

candle with a blue light bulb in your front window(s)

decorate your tree in blue, trim the outside of your home

in blue lights. The color blue is symbolic of peace.

By displaying your blue light, it will send the message you

support America’s peacekeepers, and that you hope the

coming year will be a year of peace. This is a way to let

other people know you respect and honor the badge and

say ‘thank you’ to police officers for protecting you and

your community daily.

Thank you for your time may you and your families have a

wonderful & safe Holiday Season.

Sincerely,

Heather Whorton

Keeping it Real By Toni Babcock

At times we may have a hard time distinguish-ing between the disciplining voice of the Holy Spirit, and the condemning voice of the devil. Here is what I have discovered to be helpful:

The Spirit of God will always expose any self-confidence in the flesh, and turn us toward the power of the cross and Christ’s resurrection. He will convince us we have died with Christ and have been raised with Christ and we are in Christ, therefore the work of Christ is complete. That those who have believed the gospel are sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise (Ephe-sians 1:13).

The devil on the other hand, will always attempt to depose our confidence in Christ, point us back

to our failures, and convince us we need to trust in something else, or something more than the gospel of Christ. Jesus said, “The thief cometh not but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly,” (John 10:10 KJV).

Think of a poor man walking through a desert, thirsting for a drink of water. An old man holding a sturdy shovel appears before him. “Take this shovel and begin to dig,” the old man says. “If you dig long and hard, eventually you will find all the water you need. But beware if anyone tells you about a river of living water in the desert. Such a river is only a mirage, and a dangerous one at that. Listen to me, and trust what I tell you to do, and it will go well with you. Keep work-ing your shovel and one day you will be reward-ed.” So the poor man digs deeper and deeper. He keeps on digging until he eventually dies of

thirst. Soon after, the old man returns, finds the man dead and still clutching his shovel, so he buries him in the hole that he dug, after retriev-ing the cruel tool out of the dead man’s hands.

Like the poor man in the desert, how many spiri-tually thirsty people rely on their own goodness, or the “commandments and doctrines of men” (Colossians 2:22) while refusing the fountain of living water?

To those who trust in the Lord the prophet promises “Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the Lord is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit,” (Jeremiah 17:7-8.)

FaithfulI have failed God many times as most of us have and will probably fail him in some way every day. He’s still working and I feel that he has a lot more to do in me. As we grow in the Lord we learn from our mistakes, through trials and valleys. Many times we may wonder, God, where are you? But he is always there for he is omnipotent and omnipresent. That means he is everywhere at all times. WOW!---How awesome! Not only has he shown me that he answers prayers. He’s shown me that he wants to give good gifts to his children, however he wants our hearts to be right and he wants our motive to be right. He wants to know that we can and will trust him to work things out no matter what. Also, he wants us to love him. God is teaching me to spend more time with him. This is very important and I have to say, I fall short of that. Sometimes things get so hectic we feel there aren’t enough hours in a day for our time with God, which you all can probably relate to. The more time we spend with someone, the better we know him. This is also true with our Lord.

A Note From the EditorWe all have one. It’s that one article of clothing that, even though it may be torn and tattered or no loner fits, we just can’t seem to eliminate from a drawer or closet. My husband and I share a zippered hoodie that we’ve owner for at least fifteen years. The gray and navy hoodie is frayed along most of the seams and is scattered with fuzz balls but it’s the item we both turn to for comfort and warmth in the fall.

As I pulled the hoodie from our closet for the first time this year I remembered it had survived both the clothing store from which I purchased it and the kind gentleman, who was a family friend, that sold it to me. It has been packed in a bag numerous times and weathered travels through Los Angeles, Dallas, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Memphis and Tallahassee, just to name a few. We’ve worn the jacket during family births, deaths and an ar-ray of life changing events. I’m fairly certain our favorite old hoodie could recall things our own memories have forgotten.

As our neighbors to the north sift through the remains of their homes and objects super storm Sandy did not claim, I know unexpected treasures will be found. Even the smallest items that could’ve been disregarded weeks ago will now hold a special meaning and tell an incred-ible story. It’s through such tragedy that we value life first and foremost and cling to our loved ones. The other souvenirs we uncover along the way simply become the starting point for the next chapter of life.

Wishing everyone a wonderful week,Audrey Chambers

¥ In this season of bitter partisan ri-valries, it would be well to remember the following sage observation: “Do not trust to the cheering, for those persons would cheer just as much

if you and I were going to be hanged.” The man who first made that observation was Lord Protector of England Oliver Cromwell, considered by some to be a hero of liberty, by others to be a regicidal dictator. He died in 1658, probably from septicemia. He was so reviled that, three years later, he body was exhumed so that he could be posthumously executed, his body thrown into a pit and his head displayed on a pole outside Westminster Hall.

¥ Those who study such things say that if all the gold in the world were combined in one lump, it would result in a cube that measures 20 yards on each side.

¥ If you’re planning a trip to Lima, Peru, you might want to add Puente de Piedra to your sightseeing list. Though the Spanish name means “Bridge of Stone,” the span is popularly known as the Bridge of Eggs. Legend has it that in 1608, the builders the used the whites of 10,000 seabird eggs in the mortar that holds the stones together.

¥ Pumpkins are native to the Americas, not Europe. This is why the origi-nal jack-o’-lantern was a turnip.

¥ What do the words “obscene,” “tranquil,” “mediate,” “catastrophe,” “dire,” “critical,” “vast” and “apostrophe” have in common? All of them appeared in print for the first time in the works of William Shakespeare.

¥ If you’re contemplating a move to Corpus Christi, Texas, be sure to keep in mind that in that town, it’s illegal to raise alligators in your home.***Thought for the Day: “One fool can ask more questions in a minute than 12 wise men can answer in an hour.” -- Vladimir Lenin

¥ Have a stiff straw or corn broom? To keep the ends in shape, cut a band that’s about 4 inches wide from an old pantyhose leg. Slip it over the bris-tles to keep them together.

¥ If you buy a pair of shoes that you LOVE so much you find you’re wearing them almost every day, go back to the store and get a second pair. The lifespan of a pair of shoes is dramatically reduced by over-wearing them. Make a mark inside to distinguish the pairs, and alternate them.

¥ “An old pill bottle can make a handy dispenser for rolls of stamps. Remove the top and cut a slit into the side of the bottle using a handsaw. Set the roll of stamps into the bottle, guiding the end out of the slit. Replace lid.” -- A.F. in Connecticut

¥ “This is a senior tip, but it’s useful for everyone! If you get a new pair of shoes that are slick on the bottoms, get a piece of sandpaper and scuff up the soles to get some traction.” -- L.L. in Alabama

¥ “I start now collecting cheap but pretty dishes in all sizes from yard sales and secondhand stores. I use them at the holidays for cookie gifts, when bringing a dish to a friend, etc. They can be reused, and I let everyone know it’s not necessary to re-turn them. Plus, they are sturdier than plastic ware, which usually gets tossed after the holidays.” -- J.D. in Florida
