FREE FROM RELIGIOUS PERFORMANCE
Fourteen years ago, I finally quit trying to be a “good Christian” when I found out that I could be free from legalistic rules that focused on my performance instead of God’s grace. Like many sincere people, I used to go to a lot of “seminars” and “conferences”. I would load up my car with books and tapes, trying to find “the key” to a “victorious life”, an effective minis-try, a happy marriage, and so on and on. I attended conferences on “the deeper life”, “church growth”, “the Christian home”, “end time prophecy”, “soul-winning evangelism”, “prayer” and “fasting” ( I hated that one! ), finances and family, substance and style, preaching and planning, holiness and healing, sex and stress (I’m not kidding), and more.Christian “experts” in their chosen fields told us all the rules to follow to be a great success as a really great Christian. It was enough to make you either throw up or go crazy, and I think I did both! Then in 1998 I was preparing to go to another one. This one was called “Born Free”, to be held in a huge church somewhere in the Atlanta area. On the way there my wife and I had a big argument in the car. You know, the usual thing about how she thought I was supposed to ask directions, when I KNEW that I could find it if I only drove around long enough! We arrived late, upset and still a little angry. Finding my seat, I began to listen to the speaker, a well-known author and teacher
named Steve Brown.During the first few minutes I heard Mr. Brown say something like this: “If you are trying to get everything right about God and the ministry, you won’t find it here.”That surprised me quite a bit. He went on to say that he didn’t have many answers and didn’t know anybody who did!He said that he himself really messed up a lot, and that we will too, and that it was okay! He said that we didn’t have to always be right or in control. He said that even sin and failure can be our friends!Mr. Brown went on to say that God was doing fine before we came along, and He will be doing fine long after we’re gone. He said that God doesn’t really need us, but He really likes for us to come to Him, messed up as we are-- not so that He can fix us, but just so that He can love us!He even said that when we really “blow it”, God is neither sur-prised nor angry. Finally, he said that there was nothing good that we could do to make Him love us more, and nothing bad that we could do that would make Him love us less!Imagine what was going through my mind as I heard these words! Could it really be true?Yes, instantly I knew that it was!For years I had secretly believed that something like what Mr. Brown said could be true, but nobody had ever told it to me with-out reservations and warnings which served to “keep us in line”. These “reservations and warnings” ruined the whole thing. There
is no such thing as “freedom, but… ”. Either we are actually free, free to do right or wrong, free to obey or to disobey… or we are not free at all. Jesus said that we are “free indeed”. I think He meant it! He went to a lot of trouble to secure this freedom for us.Some well-meaning Christians will tell you that this teaching is dangerous- that it invites sin, and that it can get out of hand and you will go too far. Yeah, maybe so. But since nobody else, ei-ther inside or outside the church, can give you real freedom, you will soon come running back to the only One who can.Becoming free has really made some strange changes in my life since we made that trip to Atlanta so many years ago. Surpris-ingly, there is an increasing desire to cooperate in making my life a more grace-ful life. I find myself WANTING to please the One who has set me free! The “Born Free” seminar taught me “you will never get better until you know that you don’t have to get better.” Mr. Brown was right when he said, “obedience will never ever produce freedom, but freedom will eventually produce obedience”.After that, I stopped going to all those “conferences”!If you have become weary of trying to do it right like a “good Christian”... I invite you to do what I did.Give it up.Quit.Put your burden down and join me in an ancient spiritual song:Free at last, free at last! Thank God Almighty; I’m free at last!

VoiceNo matter what things look like — if we stand up for God’s word and declare that it is true, it will help us, God will help us. He speaks through his word, giving us examples, rules and regulations. It tells us how to be comforted, have hope and faith for He gives us His promises.
He speaks to some one way and another way to someone else. When it is God, it will always line up with His word. If it doesn’t line up with His word, it’s not God. He can speak any way he chooses. He spoke to Joseph through a dream and Mary through an angel. John heard the voice of God through a trumpet. Samuel, when he was a child, heard God calling his name.
You can hear Him speak in your spirit. Yes, He can speak any way He chooses. After all, he spoke to Balaam through a donkey.

A Note From the EditorWhen I was in third grade, as a class assignment, I en-tered a Christmas poetry contest at our local library. A few weeks later my teacher revealed to the class that my poem had been chosen as first place winner. I can re-member feeling a huge sense of accomplishment and I received a notice from the library that my poem would be read aloud at an awards ceremony.
My mom and I arrived at the library that evening and, at age nine; I found the “ceremony” to be very underwhelm-ing. I had such ideas of grandeur that my award would be something extremely valuable however, when my name was called and my poem was read, I stepped up to receive a hardback copy of Tolkien’s “The Hobbit”.
“The Hobbit” would sit on a shelf in my bedroom for ap-proximately 10 years until I finally picked it up in college and instantly became an avid “Lord of the Rings” fan. My husband and I eagerly awaited the release of all three “Lord of the Rings” movies and quickly made it to the the-ater to view each one. In fact, I remember barely making it through the final “Return of the King”, extremely preg-nant, making numerous restroom trips and dozing off in the last 30 minutes of the very long third installment.
Needless to say, when we caught wind of the release of “The Hobbit” at theaters in December we knew that we would mark our calendars and a trip to The Shire would be in order.
Wishing everyone a wonderful week,Audrey Chambers

¥ Mike Edwards, one of the founding members of the British band Elec-tric Light Orchestra, met with an untimely death decades after he left the group. In 2010, as Edwards was driving in the rural southwest of England, a farmer lost control of a 1,300-pound bale of hay. This wheel-shaped bale rolled down a hill and over a hedge, and just happened to smash into the van that Edwards was driving.

¥ Use self-stick notes to or-ganize your errands. Use a note for each location, with instructions or shopping lists on each. Then put the notes in order: e.g., drop kids off
at Grandma’s, shoe store, hardware store, grocery store, home, etc. You will be less likely to forget a stop, and you can make the best use of your time and gas!
¥ Two tips for sewing on buttons: First, for pants buttons, use unwaxed dental floss. It’s incredibly strong and can take a lot of abuse. Second, slip a pin between the button and the fabric before sewing on. When you’re finished, remove the pin. The button now has some room behind it, and it will last longer.
¥ “This is a tip for us singletons. I love whipped top-ping on my hot chocolate, but it doesn’t always last in
my fridge. I buy a tub of it, and spoon mug-size dollops on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper. When the sheet is full, I freeze them. They can be peeled off easily and slipped in a container or plastic bag. When I make my hot chocolate, I plop in one straight from the freezer. It takes only minutes to soften and melt. And it’s delicious!” -- F.D. in Michigan
¥ “If you cut the entire top and one of the top corners off a cereal box, then tape the bottom closed, it’s almost the same as the magazine holders they sell in stores. I cov-ered mine with fancy paper. I keep it in my kitchen for cooking magazines.” -- R.R. in Indiana
¥ Gifts that school-age kids can make: Bookmarks! Cut strips of cardstock into bookmark lengths. Have your child decorate one side and write a nice message on the other. Laminate if possible. A great gift from your child.
The Baldwin County Heritage Museum created an exhibit of traditional needle arts for the Bald-
win County Cattle & Fair Association‘s 62nd Annual Fair. Many of the pieces in the exhibit are
from the Baldwin County area. If you missed the exhibit at the fair, it will be on display at the
museum during the month of October. BCHM is open free to the public Wed-Sat 10am to 3pm.

OCTOBER 14, 2012
We the people of the United States . . .
WE DID BUILD THIS!
THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IS STRONG
Because we the people . . .
. . . have not forgotten that every one of us has the right to work hard and be successful. Success is not something that should be given to those who refuse to work for it. Success is not free or a government program. Success is for those who are willing to work hard, be dedicated, and overcome obstacles.
The United States of America is successful because hard working Americans are successful.
“Hard work is the price we must pay for success. I think you can accomplish anything if you’re willing to pay the price.” — Vince Lombardi
