¥ Save the rubber bands from broccoli. You can put them around the body of a drinking glass so it will be less slippery as water condenses on it.

¥ “I save the wrappers from my unsalted butter sticks in a baggie in my refrigerator. I use them to grease a pan when baking.” -- M.M. in Wisconsin

¥ Corn is best cooked within a day or two of being picked, so farm-stand corn is the best. Add a little bit of milk to the cook-ing water, and it will bring out the natural sweetness.

¥ Cherries are in season! Much like strawberries, they need to be kept refrigerated but taste best at room temperature. Before eating your cherries, let them sit out for about a half-hour. Mmmmm.

¥ Dried lentils don’t need to be soaked prior to cooking like other dried beans. And they’re packed with protein.

¥ “If you lose a contact lens and can’t find it right off, try turn-ing out the lights and shining a flashlight across the ground. The lens might reflect the light and cause a flash. That will make it easier to find.” -- T.L. in Texas

Grandparent ScamThere’s a new twist on an old scam on se-niors. The “grandparents scam” has taken a very creative turn. In the typical grandparents scam, a

“grandchild” will call his grandparent and claim that there’s an emergen-cy and that money must be wired to solve the problem. Different versions have the grandchild either in jail, stuck in a foreign country, in an accident ... it doesn’t matter, but money needs to be sent immediately.Generally a “Hi, grandma” is enough to convince a senior that it is indeed his or her grandchild on the phone. Too many times the grandparent doesn’t ask enough questions. And too often, thousands of times a year, the grandparent will send the money ... to scammers. It’s not the grand-child on the line -- it’s thieves.

Now there’s a new version of this scam. Not only do the thieves know the grandchild’s name and school, they have his or her voice asking you for money for the emergency. You can thank the Internet for that. If a grandchild has posted anything online that includes their voice, scammers can use that recording to create an emergency message, all in your grandchild’s voice. All of these scams have some things in common. It’s an emergency. Money must be wired right away. If it’s not the grandchild, the scammer could claim to be an attorney or another relative. And there is a need for secrecy (“Don’t tell mom!”) You do need to consult others, though. If you get a call like this, contact the grandchild’s parents and ask what’s going on. If they’re not home, call the police.Do not send money. These thieves work out of foreign countries, and you will never get your money back.

Pimiento-Studded Deviled EggsThese appetizers are festive and colorful, and can easily be made the day ahead. Simply spoon the yolk mixture into the whites for a more casual look, or use a decorating bag with a large star tube for a more formal look.

Stir in pimientos, mayonnaise dressing, mustard, ground red pepper and salt until well mixed.2. • French chemist and biologist Louis Pasteur is best known for creating the method of pasteurization to keep milk and wine from spoiling in addition to creating vaccines for a number of diseases including rabies. Oddly enough, when Pasteur was in school, his teachers considered him to only be mediocre at chemistry.

• All coffee fanatics have Melitta Bentz to thank. Bentz was a typical German housewife that went on to invent the coffee filter, 300 years after coffee had been discovered. She revolutionized the idea of using paper to filter out the unwanted residues.

• Before he made his contributions to our knowledge about space (as well as creating his many inventions), Italian born Galileo Galilei wanted to be a musician. His father insisted that he go to medical school, yet Galilei never received his degree from the University of Pisa. He did, however, go on to publish “The Starry Messenger,” presenting among many other findings that Earth was not the center of the universe.

• Although he might have found proof for the Earth not being the center of the universe, Galilei was not the first to introduce this concept. Mathematician and astronomer Nicholas Copernicus first claimed that the sun was the stationary object that Earth revolved around. His idea was disregarded by most, but he is credited as the initiator of the Scientific Revolution.

• German chemist Robert Bunsen is famous for the Bunsen burner, although he never actually invented the iconic scientific tool; he merely improved it.

• Although most scientists get their start in universities, it is only appropriate that Laszlo Jozsef Biro, inventor of the ball point pen, began as a journalist and editor. His brilliant idea stemmed from his annoyance at writing with a fountain pen.

• Changing forever the music industry, German immigrant Emile Berliner revolutionized sound recording by being the first person to start recording on flat disks or records. He went on to invent the gramophone and records. Did you know that the first records were made of glass long before they switched to plastic?

• Marie Curie, one of the most famous female scientists, is celebrated for her discovery of the mysterious element radium. She completely altered the way scientists thought about matter and energy and paved the way

for the treatment of many diseases.• Glorified for his work with atomic theory, England

native John Dalton achieved his findings due to his high interest in meteorology. He kept weather records until his death and published a book titled “Meteorological Observations.” He later went on to explain his conclusions about atoms in “New System of Chemical Philosophy.”

• Scottish scientist James Watt was considered a “delicate” child and spent a great deal of his childhood homeschooled by his mother and was considered slow in many academic areas — except for math. Watt eventually invented the steam engine, and after Parliament granted him a patent that prevented anyone else from making a similar machine, Watt went on to control a steam engine dynasty.

• Known as the Father of Geometry, ancient Greek Mathematician Euclid published his ideas in “The Elements,” and his teachings influenced Western mathematics for more than 2,000 years. Since it is estimated that he lived from 325 BC-265 BC, little is known about his life.

• Born into a prominent family of wealth, Italian scientist Amedeo Avogadro followed in his family’s footsteps to practice law but couldn’t shake his interest in the natural sciences. He studied physics and math in private for years before he published his hypothesis about molecules that was eventually labeled Avogadro’s Law.

• Immensely famous for his printing press, Johannes Gutenberg began as a goldsmith and businessman before making his contributions as a scientist and inventor. Gutenberg forever altered the method and speed by which books were distributed to the public.

• German physicist Wilhelm Rontgen is known for discovering X-rays and received great recognition for his findings, including streets named in his honor, countless awards and the Nobel Prize in Physics.

• German physician and bacteriologist Robert Koch made a discovery that changed medicine forever: All diseases were not caused by bad air but instead by bacteria. He was able to find the causes of such deadly diseases of tuberculosis, cholera and the cycle of anthrax. Koch won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1905.

• Although he was expected to enter the medical field, Frederick Sanger’s interest in nature and science was too strong. Because of his work with proteins and DNA, Sanger won two Nobel Prizes in Chemistry, one in 1958 and one in 1980. He was the first person to find a protein sequence.

A veteran was buried in a cardboard box.

I read those words on the Internet news, and my stomach did a flip-flop.This didn’t happen in an emergency in an out-of-the way place, or as a temporary measure, or as part of a crime. It happened in a National Cemetery. It never should have happened at all. It only came to light when maintenance workers were realigning the veteran’s headstone and discovered the cardboard box just below the surface. The World War II veteran was a man who had no family left to make any arrangements. Cemetery officials did part of their job when they gave him an engraved headstone. The cemetery held a small service. The veteran’s name was read in a ceremony that’s held a few times a year. But the medical examiner had sent his remains in a cardboard box ... and that’s how the veteran was buried, in a shallow grave, in a National Cemetery. How many others are there like this? Where I live, if there are unclaimed remains of deceased veterans, they go all out. Two veterans without family were recently buried with full honors, with color guard, “Taps” and folded flags, arranged by a group of funeral directors. The cremated remains in small wood caskets arrived by Hearse. A hundred people attended the ceremony to honor two men who had no one else. A bill now in Congress, “The Dignified Burial of Veterans Act of 2012,” will require the Department of Veterans Affairs to furnish a casket or urn to a deceased veteran when there is no next-of-kin or when there isn’t enough money available in the veteran’s estate. If ever there was a time to get on the phone to call your senators about supporting a bill, this is it.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Be prepared to face some challenges stirred up by an envious colleague. Your best defense is the Arian’s innate hon-esty. Stick with the truth, and you’ll come out ahead.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your sensitivity to the needs of others is admirable. But be careful to avoid those who would take unfair advantage of your good nature, especially where money is involved.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Having an optimistic attitude is fine, as far as it goes. But don’t be lulled into a false sense of confidence. There are still problems to deal with before you can totally relax.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might feel somewhat “crabby,” as you fuss over plans that don’t seem to work out. Maybe you’re trying too hard. Ease up and let things happen without forcing them.LEO (July 23 to August 22) Heed that keen Leonine instinct. It’s trying to tell you to delay making a decision until you’re sure there are no hidden problems that could cause trouble later on.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to reach out to those who might be nursing hurt feelings over recent events. Best advice: Ignore any pettiness that could delay the healing process.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your understanding helps a col-league get through a difficult period. Although you didn’t do it for a re-ward, be assured that your actions will be repaid down the line.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You score some high marks in the workplace, which will count in your favor when you face the possibility of changing direction on your current career path.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your goal lies straight ahead. Stay focused on it and avoid distractions that could throw off your aim and cause potentially detrimental delays.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Keep that burst of exuberance in check and resist pushing through your new project before it’s ready. In your personal life, a family member again needs help.AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Paying attention to your work is important this week. But so are your relationships with those special people in your life. Make time for them as well.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Good news. Someone is about to re-pay a long-standing debt. But be warned. That same someone could try to charm you into lending it back unless you say no and mean it.BORN THIS WEEK: You are sensitive to matters that involve your home and family. You would make a fine family-court judge or social worker.

Plum Buckle Is Easy, Fresh Summer RecipeBubbling sweet plums in a butter cake, often referred to as a buckle, is a tasty dessert treat to serve this holiday weekend and all summer long. It’s my go-to summer recipe not only because it uses one of my favorite seasonal fruits, the lus-

cious and beautiful plum, but it’s also a piece of cake to make!Look for ripe plums with your family at a roadside stand or at your local grocery store. While choosing the fruit, show your kids how to gently squeeze each one to find ripe choices. The fruit should give slightly when lightly pressed between your fingers. Young kids will have fun counting up at least five for this recipe, or let them weigh 1 1/2 pounds’ worth. If there are several varieties to choose from, ask if you can taste samples. When you return home, wash the fruit and gather all the ingredients. While you wait for the butter to come to room temperature, your school-age child may grate the lemon peel, and another may grease and flour the pan while you slice the plums. Now everything will be ready to go together in a snap.

FRESH & EASY PLUM BUCKLECake:1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour1 teaspoon baking powder1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg1/4 teaspoon salt1 cup (1/2 pound) butter, at room temperature1 cup sugar2 large eggs1 1/2 teaspoons grated lemon peel1/3 cup milk4 cups (about 1 1/2 pounds) unpeeled ripe plums, pitted and sliced 1/4 inch thick

Topping:2 tablespoons sugar1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon1. Preheat oven to 325 F. 2. Mix together the flour, baking powder, nutmeg and salt in a bowl. Set aside.3. Beat the butter and 1 cup sugar on high speed until smooth and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in grated lemon peel.4. Stir half the flour mixture into the butter mixture. Add milk, and gently stir in re-maining flour mixture just until the dry ingredients are moistened and the batter is smooth. Spoon into a buttered and floured 8-inch-square baking pan. Let kids arrange plum slices, slightly overlapping them in rows or concentric circles over the batter. Sprinkle topping over slices.5. Bake 45 minutes or until a toothpick or skewer inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool in pan. Slice and serve warm or at room temperature. Top with a flag on each piece for the Fourth of July, or with a candle or trinket for a summer birthday. Serves 10.NOTE: Firm, ripe apricots can be substituted for plums.

¥ It’s well-known that the United States is a melting pot of nationalities. At the end of the 1800s, New York City was so diverse that it had more Irish than any city except Dublin, and a larger Russian population than was to be found at that time in the city of Kiev. The only two cities in the world that had more German speakers were Vienna and Berlin, and Milan and Naples had fewer Italians than New York.

A Mature Woman’s Answer to Resuming Her Golf Game

by Audrey ChambersAt age 10 I began to learn the game of golf. My dad had recently graduated from law school and, while building his small private practice, there was time for golf when he found himself in the position to wrap his day up early in the afternoon. We began where every beginning golfer should – at the driving range.

The only true way to master a good golf swing is repetition. Whether you’re working out kinks in your drive, trying out a hybrid for the first time or just attempting to maintain control of a pitching wedge, the driving range is the place to be. As a kid, my dad and I would hit bucket after bucket at the range and he would give me pointers that improved my game all the way around.

As I matured into a young woman in my teens I found myself truly enjoying the game of golf with friends. Most of my girlfriends thought it was too refined, boring and not big fans of gnats and dirt while boys who were interested in the game were often impressed at my knowledge, skill and equipment (I managed to carry a fairly nice full set of clubs and bag while most of my friends scraped up their sets at yard sales and from relatives’ basements). It made for fun summer afternoons when we were all able to meet up at the course and compare our swings, or lack of a fundamental swing in most cases.

I became absent from the game in my early 20’s when college, a husband and two children came into the picture. Although I continue to lead a busy lifestyle, I find myself 18 years later longing to pick up the game once again.

The rules are the same but the equipment has definitely changed over the years. I picked up a new set of clubs that include a hybrid and I had no idea what kind of distance I could expect from that particular club. The driver felt the same in my hands, but when you factor in age and additional pounds I came to realize that my swing would require some modification. Taking all of these factors into consideration, where would I find myself? Yes, that’s right, at the driving range. I found myself doing all of the wrong things again; lifting my head, shifting my stance and over or under swinging clubs. I know that the driving range is the place to be and until I regain full confidence in club control and my game you will find me on the driving range, just like I was 10 years old again, hitting bucket after bucket of balls.

A Few More Tidbits on Formosan Termites

Most termite species need moisture to survive. Formosan termites are especially dan-gerous to boats, buildings and trees since they need less moisture than other termites. These resourceful buggers have the ability to survive above ground in large numbers (think millions). They love structures of all types, can move from wooden docks into boats, and even eat live trees. They can cause significant damage in as little as three months with their vast numbers and eager workers.

A general rule of thumb to discourage termites is:

Keep the structure dry

Make sure sprinklers face away from home

Make sure A/C drains at least 2’ away from foundation

Splashbacks from rain should be redirected

Repair leaks immediately

Clear gutters (termites love leaf debris)

Plant all shrubs approximately 2 feet away from structure (you should be able to see the foundation wall all around home)

Trees should not have branches touching the roof

Store firewood (all wood) off the ground

Verify your structure does not have wood in contact with ground (siding, frame, porches attached to home, etc)

Call Household Termite & Pest Control (or your termite company) at first sight of swarmers or possible termite activity and have your home inspected and bonded annu-ally by a trained professional at Household Termite & Pest Control.

If we help you control the moisture, we can control the termites.
